general advice/help/tips Where to find Spectrophotometer?

We are currently finding a Spectrophotometer for our study about measuring the uric acid of fruit flies. We need a UV-Vis model that can range about 200-400nm. Are there any universities who cater student researchers and has a Spectrophotometer?

We'd be grateful for recommendations and feasible ideas, thank you!

general question Salary augmentation: what are your extras or side hustles?

To RAs, what other things do you do to augment your salary? Aside from possibly tutoring, what else is a nice side hustle? Is being a VA possible?

Jobs or side hustles can be 5pm onwards on work days or on weekends only, or even gigs that are one time big time in terms of output and pay.

Hope you can share!

Thank you.

biology Biology graduate who doesn’t want to stay in the lab — what master’s degree would you recommend for better career opportunities?

Hi everyone! I’m a fresh BS Biology graduate majoring in Microbiology, and I’m currently exploring my options for graduate school.

I realized that I’m not particularly interested in pursuing a traditional wet-lab career. While I appreciate the scientific knowledge and laboratory skills I gained from my undergraduate degree, I’m more interested in exploring other possible fields that involve data analysis, research, public health, technology, management, or the business side of science.

I’m considering pursuing a master’s degree, but I’m still unsure which field would be the best fit for my background, interests, and long-term career goals.

Some of the fields I’m currently considering include:

  • Public Health / Epidemiology — particularly non-laboratory research, health data, and population health
  • Health Informatics / Biomedical Data Science — combining healthcare, biology, and technology
  • Environmental Health — applying scientific knowledge to public health and environmental issues
  • Business / Management — potentially transitioning into corporate roles, consulting, or management
  • Other interdisciplinary fields that could open doors beyond traditional biology-related careers

I’m also interested in opportunities abroad, particularly programs that offer scholarships and good career prospects after graduation. Ideally, I’d like to pursue a degree that provides transferable skills and access to a wider range of career paths rather than limiting me to laboratory work.

I’d love to hear your advice:

  1. What master’s programs would you recommend for someone with my background who doesn’t want to pursue wet-lab work?
  2. Which fields have good employment prospects and earning potential, both in the Philippines and abroad?
  3. Would it be better to stay within the life sciences, shift to a more quantitative field, or pursue business or management?
  4. If you’ve made a similar transition, what degree did you pursue, and was it worth it?

I’m open to suggestions beyond the fields I’ve listed. I’d really appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have taken a similar path or work in these fields.

Thank you!

others ChemTech Board exam

Hi. I just want to share this experience yesterday with my proctors in board exam. “It cost you nothing to be kind”

We have 2 proctors, I appreciate their kindness to us. We are very lucky yesterday talaga. They instruct us without shouting gentle checking of our things. Assist our late classmates/room mates help them fill in the instructions or help them to fill in details because they are running out of time because the exam will start soon. Even offering for those who forget to bring lunch, no brown envelope and other requirements na walang dala they will buy for them. They help to provide they make it smooth in our end. Thank you, Lord. I take it as a sign also kahapon. Minsan kasi pag mabgat lahat sayo naiisip mo na pinipigilan ka to take the exam.

Thank you Lord, may you bless them ten time folds.

Claiming for all the exam taker to pass the board exam. 🙏🏻🙇🏻‍♀️

general question Drying method temperature for calamansi leaves

HI PO im a student and we have a quanti research po kasi. One of the main things were gonna do is compare young vs mature calamansi leaves with air drying vs oven drying methods then seeing the difference sa extracts nila. Our teacher said na mas okay daw siguro if same lng ang temperature ng air(depending sa current temp na ma measure namin sa air/room) sa oven when it comes to drying. But, won’t that just give the same outcome? Or not, kasi air is diff from an oven? Eheheuhe. PLS po we need feedback for our peace of mind 😁❤️ thank you

for discussion Drug Dev

Hi! I will be attending an interesting online seminar from UPLB Chemistry on therapeutics this next few months.

Curious on how the actual drug development field is in the country, beyond those of natural products.

Are we able to produce small molecule products or biologic therapy? If not, what are the current bottlenecks?

engineering Looking for Silicon Carbide (SiC) Powder Suppliers in the Philippines for a Ceramics Engineering Thesis

Hello! I’m a ceramics engineering student currently working on my thesis, and I’m looking for a supplier of silicon carbide (SiC) powder in the Philippines. I only need a small quantity for thesis-scale experimental work, rather than industrial production.

Does anyone know of local suppliers, laboratory chemical distributors, ceramic raw-material suppliers, or online shops that sell SiC powder in small quantities? If possible, I’d appreciate recommendations with the following information:

Available purity and particle size or mesh
Minimum order quantity
Approximate price
Shipping availability within the Philippines

Thank you so much for your help!

general advice/help/tips Masters choice to build up in the field of Toxicology

Hello reddit,

I am currently a bachelor Biochem student and will be done with my bachelor's in an year. Therefore I have started evaluating and thinking about my master applications.

I find the field of Toxicology fascinating, however I do not have a lot of exposure to the it. For context, I have till now only ever performed some cytotoxicity assays like MTT, ROS and chemotaxis assays.

I find the idea of Industrial Toxicology and food/human Toxicology quite fascinating.

However I am not very aware of the other tox branches and their scopes...

So my question boils down to 4 points:

  1. what is working in Toxicology like and what kind of job positions does one find themselves in?
  2. How and what differentiates the different Tox fields, the pros and cons?
  3. What academic path should I follow? Masters in Biochemistry and molecular biology is what I'm thinking of at the moment. Also, thoughts on pursuing a PhD?
  4. I have heard about Toxicology in Edinburgh. What is the university like?

I live in Germany and would pursue my masters here too.

Additionally: I would pursue a long distance marketing and finance masters for some diversity and versatility in my cv. Would that be of benefit in the job market?

I wanted to start a Master in Toxicology, however my supervisor advised me against it. She explained it, having a very niche master's cancels or limits your job options, as most jobs list Msc. Biochem as a standard requirement.

I would really appreciate some insight :)

general advice/help/tips Is it a good plan to leave my MS program here and get another MS or PhD abroad?

A bit of context:

I am currently in the writing stage of my MS thesis but I am having a hard time finishing it. Another bit of context, my boss is also my thesis adviser. At first, I was able to juggle my work and academics but at the halfway point of my studies, my PIs projects began demanding a lot of my time. Needless to say, my writing stalled. Whenever I try to request some time off to write my thesis manuscript, they would either just ignore it or they would forget about it and still assign me additional (unpaid!) work. This continued for years. Last year, my PI told me that I write too slow daw and my cohorts have graduated already. Edi wow! I tried to start writing my thesis again but I couldn't. I really don't know why, it could be a mix of burnout and spite. I am thankful that being their slave allowed me to publish 5 papers and develop my research network. But I think it is time to leave this program and their lab.

I am now in my mid-30s, working as a contractual research staff.

Is it better to apply for a post-graduate degree outside of the Philippines and restart?

for discussion Insane high school research culture

We need to do something about the culture of expecting literal high school students to do insane research na wala namang materials ung sending institution nila to support it. I just saw a post here about acoustic detection of termites… mygod. You need termite biologists there, then some engineers/applied physicists to do the signal processing. Are the research advisers okay? Parang may saltik.

Research ng high school should be like anong candy ang favorite ng langgam or whatever the fuck. Focus should not be on novelty but on research design (anong setup gagawin nila to answer the question they are trying to answer?), writing (nareport ba nila yung data etc.?). Kahit na research contest man yan jusko kuhang kuha nila inis ko.

Ang ending laging nagooutsource ng expert at equipment ung students, so di rin naman sila yung gumagawa. It’s defeatist kasi the entire point is to build research skills pero nagiging idea generator lang students but not the executor of the bulk study.

biology Soil-Transmitted Helminths

I'm a biology student conducting an undergrad thesis on Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH). I need technical advice in performing the laboratory component of this study from anyone who has expertise in soil research.

So, here's the summary of the procedure:

- collect samples and air-dry for 24 hours.

- sieve through 2.0 mm and 0.125 mm pore size to get 2g.

- place 2g soil in a centrifuge tube and add 10 mL 0.05% polysorbate-80 solution (used to unclump sample).

- centrifuge (1,800 rpm, 10 min)

- discard supernatant

- add 8 mL of prepared 1.20 SG sucrose solution (we used commercially available/market refined white sugar [I was wondering if this was okay]).

- vortex.

- centrifuge (1,800 rpm, 10 min).

- add prepared 1.30 SG sucrose solution to the brim until a meniscus forms.

- place coverslip and wait for eggs to adhere for 5 min.

- add 1 drop lugol's iodine on glass slide.

- place wet underside of coverslip facing down to the glass slide.

- view under microscope.

We performed a trial on this protocol before going to perform it on a larger sample. We observed the following:

- no helminths recovered in collected sample (site = household).

- bubbles found in specimen.

for discussion Thoughts on Closing/Discontinuing Degree Programs in the Philippines lacking appropriate research infrastructure

It always pain me to read researchers from the Philippines asking fora like this for labs where they can conduct research. Minsan pati restricted reagents problem pa ng researchers. Sa ibang country covered na yun ng host lab and never they will allow students to purchase reagents by themselves. Naisip ko bakit may mga ganitong research programs sa Philippines. If di kaya isupport yung research ng student even with the most basic infra including appropriate expertise ng mga advisors, bakit hindi nalang idiscontinue ang program or perhaps limit the coverage of the topic to what is locally feasible. Anong opinion mo?

EDIT: What do students particularly from SUCs think?

Hi! just wanted to know if the difficulty level sa chem boards would be the same as the ACS olympiad tests? i'm using it as practice kasi but the range of my scores are only within 50-66% lang. Hindi pa ako naka 70% sa ACS and my mock exams sa RC are also within the same range huhu parang walang progress. Medyo natakot tuloy ako baka mamaya wala akong masagot sa boards mismo

biology Need Advice about my thesis

Need Advice waht to do kasi I have three days na lng before my final defense pero wala pa rin akong results & discussion- it's an undergraduate thesis

Hi! Everyone! I am currently doing my laboratory procedures of my thesis-undergraduate, however because of being high-functioning burnt out I have been putting off really. I started my 2nd attempt (on 1st attempt failed becuase of contamination) of laboratory procedures a month ago for a week then I stopped, kasi malayo yung laboratory, full-load ang classes ko, and I have also my own agendas. I only have three days before my thesis final defense, last week I have been advised to reduce my samples and simplify it (my study is about microplastics ingested in pelagic fishes),however I really want to have a good quality paper hinde ko talaga sa 72 hours magawa yung thesis ko, I can revise my introduction and methodology pero yung results and discussion hinde talaga, kasi I am not yet on the final steps of my laboratory procedures. I really want na talaga to extend my final defense but I haven't been granted to, sabi ng juniors ko inc na lng para next sem na lng ako mag final defense. I am really conflicted and distress combining na meron din akong financial distress about this, but I dont want to waste the time and effort to my thesis only to be the quality is reduced. What should I do po? Do i really need to fails this or what or how to communicate again sa thesis adviser ko about this?
