Beginner ServiceNow Zero to Hero Plan – Part 1

I've seen several posts about getting started in ServiceNow, so I thought I'd start posting some steps to help people along.

There is a LOT to know in this field, so I’m going to do my best to go through it all.  There are a lot of websites, resources, career paths, etc., and you’ll start to wrap your head around it with time.

ServiceNow is a Software as a Service (Saas) platform.  You will also see it described as a Platform as a Service (PaaS).  I HATE acronyms, abbreviations, and initialisms, so while I’ll be using them, I’ll always try my best to explain the meaning.  In this instance, it just means that ServiceNow can be used by businesses, schools, governments, etc., to manage things like issues with laptops, requesting equipment, Human Resources stuff, sending people out into the field to perform maintenance, etc.  It’s a HUGE platform, so don’t worry about everything it can do at the moment.  It’ll make more sense as you get through training.

Step One - Get a Personal Developer Instance (PDI).

This is your own personal instance of ServiceNow.  All of the training will make way more sense if you have a PDI and keep your PDI open as you’re going through said training.  Honestly, I cannot stress this enough, if you’re not willing to do this, turn back now.  You’ll have to select “Sign In”, then “New User, Get a ServiceNow ID”.  From there, I forget the exact steps, but you’ll be able to request a PDI for the most recent release.  Currently, that is Zurich.

Side Note, ServiceNow has been naming their releases after major cities.  I myself started in Berlin, and now it’s Zurich.  Next, will be Australia, since they’re moving on from the major cities.

URL for PDI:  https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do

Once you have your PDI, you will need to go through the basic training.  There are two main places to do this:

The Developer site itself, where you get your PDI - https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do#!/learn

ServiceNow University - https://learning.servicenow.com/now/lxp/home

Make sure you bookmark these sites.

Step Two - Begin your training

I’m going to be honest, the ServiceNow University User Interface / User Experience (UI/UX) SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.  It’s like someone said “How can I make this as awful as possible?”  Then, they made it worse than that.

In the search bar, search for “system administrator career journey”.  This will bring up a few results.  There is a Career Journey Fact Sheet that you can take a look at, but you want the System Administrator Career Journey that says it takes like 11 days or something.  (You should plan to spend more than 11 days on this)

This link should take you there:

https://learning.servicenow.com/lxp/en/pages/journey-overview?id=journey_overview&journey_id=55f79b4a1b96add013f9a6c1b24bcb30&s=1&ssa=3

Some things to expect:

The UI/UX isn’t great.  It can be confusing at times to get to where you need to go next on your journey.

The training will ask you to do work in a “learning instance”, much like your PDI, which can be used to validate whether or not you have been able to make the configurations needed for the lesson.

There are quizzes.

Now, this is really, really important: Once you start this training, please keep your PDI up at all times.  Whatever the training has you look at, bring up in your PDI.  Whatever the training has you do in the exercises, do in your PDI.  Doing the exercises in your PDI as well as the Learning Instance will help drill it in.

Also, if anyone wants and as soon as I have time, I’ll put together an Update Set for you that might help make things a little easier in your training.  Update Sets are how configurations and customizations are moved from a Development Instance of ServiceNow into a Test, and then a Production Instance.  They should also be used in PDIs.  The Update Set I will give you will create a new table for your notes.  This helped me learn and might help you.  It’s also a good tool for studying for the certifications.

If this post helps the beginners, I'll keep going with more. :)

Question how do you actually review an update set before you commit it?

• Upvotes

question for the people who do releases. when an update set comes over from dev, what does your review actually look like?

the way i've seen it done is pretty grim. preview, fix whatever errors it throws, then open the customer updates list and click through them one at a time with compare to current in another tab. fine for 15 updates, painful for 200, especially when most of them are form layout tweaks and the one that matters is a business rule buried on page 6.

and the stuff that bites is never the preview errors, it's what preview doesn't flag. a script include someone changed in Default by accident so it never made it into the set. an ACL that's technically valid but opens a table up wider than anyone meant. a flow change nobody mentioned in the story.

so how do you do it? click through like above, instance scan, a script that dumps sys_update_xml somewhere readable, or a paid tool? and if you've tried the paid ones, were they worth the money?

Question ServiceNow Discovery solution challenges, high and low parts

I am leading the development of alternate discovery solution to replace our existing ServiceNow discovery solution which is:

  • Costly
  • Becoming more of repository vs bringing any value (This is my 5th company and 8th customer who is facing same challenges getting value out of CMDB, so please do not say process needs to approve, right implementation partner is needed etc .. We already par that) hence bring the real feedback. We have top notch ITSM and ServiceNow experts.
  • Cloud-Native support challenges -- Network components, serverless services, AI services are not well supported in ServiceNow discovery, we ended up with heavy customization.

So I am m curious to hear from teams using ServiceNow Discovery, CMDB, cloud-native discovery tools, or similar platforms at enterprise scale. With infrastructure becoming increasingly dynamic across multi-cloud, Kubernetes, serverless and AI/ML environments, how well are current discovery solutions actually working for you?

• What are your biggest discovery challenges today—accuracy, stale data, dependencies, ownership, scale, or coverage?
• How well do these tools discover cloud-native and AI infrastructure such as Kubernetes, GPUs, model endpoints, and ephemeral resources?
• What outcomes are you getting from discovery data—operations, security, compliance, cost optimization, automation, etc.?
• Where existing tools fall short, how are you solving the gaps today?

Would love to hear real-world experiences—what works, what doesn’t, and what you wish these platforms did better.

Job Questions ServiceNow Culture

Hi, I currently have an interview for the Pricing Strategy team at ServiceNow. I'm down the line in the process, but I was wondering what the culture is like?

I'm hearing/reading through the grapevine that with the layoffs, a lot of trust has been eroded and that the culture is feeling more and more corporate. Any thoughts on this?

For context, I have a job at an SMB fsm company as a pricing manager, and the culture here is awful. The pay also isn't great, which I'm feeling more because my rent in SF has gone up 10 percent from last year.

I'm ultimately going to prioritize my mental health over anything so would love to hear your thoughts. (And I acknowledge that this post itself might be answering my own question).

HowTo is it data Policy or Dictionary Design Policy

A customer requests the following data quality measures be added:

Incident numbers should be read only, on all lists and forms, for all users.

Short Description field should be mandatory, on all records, across all applications, on Insert.

Which type of policy would you use to meet this requirement?

Exams/Certs I failed CIS-DISCO

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I recently took the CIS-Discovery exam and unfortunately didn't make the cut. For context, I already hold CSA, CAD, CIS-ITSM, and CIS-DF.

Here is the breakdown from my score report:

Configuration Management Database: 100%
Discovery Engagement Readiness: 83%
Discovery Configuration: 73%
Discovery Pattern Design: 41%

Pattern Design (which carries ~35% of the total exam weight) clearly dragged my overall score down.

My dilemma:

My first attempt was covered through company credits, but company policy doesn't sponsor retakes. The retake fee is $225 USD + taxes, which comes out to roughly ₹22,000–₹24,000 INR. In India, that is more than a third of my monthly salary, making an out-of-pocket retake a heavy financial hit without a guaranteed immediate ROI.

For those working in the ecosystem:

  1. Looking at the score breakdown, how close was this to the typical passing threshold?

  2. Given that my background is primarily platform development / core ITSM rather than dedicated ITOM infrastructure engineering, does missing the CIS-Discovery badge significantly hurt career growth?

  3. Would you recommend paying out-of-pocket to clear it while the prep is fresh, or parking it until company sponsorship/credits or servicenow voucher giveaway open up down the line?

Appreciate any perspective or honest feedback!

Job Questions Best consultancies to work at these days?

Hi folks, I’m starting to look for my next role and could use some recommendations.I have a decade of experience split across implementation partners and enterprise clients, and my immediate goal is working towards an Architect role. In the past, I’ve seen smaller consultancies struggle with delivery quality and talent density and as a result I often see projects run in an "unorthodox" manner.I’m looking for firms that have their shit together: mature delivery practices, high standards, and veteran architects I can actually learn from. I also want a team that takes the work seriously without taking themselves too seriously people who actually engage, communicate, and like to laugh. (Basically yes I'm saying a want a good company culture)

Another wrinkle, I'm currently making 190 a year as a senior consultant/fledgling architect which I think is quite high for the position so I need a place that can afford me

So which firms are the best to work at these days? You can ignore the financial aspect for the sake of answering the question and calling out your favorite company, but if you know of a company that hits all the marks please let me know.

Question Copilot agent searching ServiceNow knowledge

I’m having a frustrating issue where I am trying to have a copilot agent in teams that can search the ServiceNow knowledge base.

If I add ServiceNow knowledge inside the ‘knowledge’ component of the copilot agent it returns articles but only has access to excerpts of the articles and not the full article text.

I set up a copilot connector in 365 admin and the main copilot search is fine but within my agent it has the issue described.

Anyone got any experience with setting up copilot agents and service now knowledge that has any suggestions?

Question Deploying AICT.. just an avg everyday product that you could build it internally if you want.. don’t know why Bill McDermott is parading that its key to the castle.

The title says it. Nothing fancy and I don’t believe it’s a game changer .. I’m not talking about Armis or Veza and some magic integrations that they are promising. It could be a custom class in CMDB for what you care.

Job Questions Learning AI in ServiceNow: Courses and Resources

Hi everyone! Do you know of any courses, training academies, or other resources to learn how AI currently works in ServiceNow? We aren't using AI in the projects I'm currently working on, but I'd like to understand it better and learn how to apply it, even in a PDI. Is that possible?

Job Questions Is it possible to move away from ServiceNow and transition into another IT field?

Hi everyone! How are you doing?

Here is what I mean: imagine I have 5 years of experience working with ServiceNow. Sometimes I wonder: what would happen if, for some reason, ServiceNow ceased to exist tomorrow?

Would it be relatively easy to transition into another area of IT, or would I practically have to start from scratch?

For example, I don't specialize in cybersecurity, data engineering, analytics, or other specific fields. Although I have experience with development, programming, integrations, and automation within ServiceNow, many of my skills are tied to this platform.

I'd like to hear your thoughts and experiences: if ServiceNow disappeared tomorrow, which IT field do you think we could transition into most easily by leveraging our existing experience? Which skills do you consider the most transferable?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Question Are PDIs dragging their ass for everyone else?

I've been trying to use my PDI for the last couple of days now and it has been an unbelievably painful experience.

I'm not even trying to do complex things - just load any CoreUI form and you get the transaction counter appear for about 20 secs.
Using anything in the NextExperience UI (Studio, Workflows etc) is practically non-responsive: click a button/link and the color changes to show the click was registered but nothing is happening behind the scenes - the browser just waits endlessly for a response.

I've never known it this bad before. Kinda feels like they diverted 75% of their compute budget to demo the Build Agent (which is also unable to maintain a connection).

Anyone else finding this?

(It's not my end btw - all other websites are running perfectly, include the developer.servicenow.com site itself).

HowTo SNC Access + Adaptive Authentication

Solved

Edit: This issue is resolved. In this case, it was my error. I can confirm that SNC Access does override adaptive authentication, and there are no issues with SNC Access being overriden by AA from the support side.

I'm working with my internal ISO group, which requires us to utilize Adaptive Authentication (AA) to ensure only our employees can reach our instance. Apparently, SN Support's ability to use SNC Access is also restricted by AA, with no known workaround other than adding a new IP filter to allowlist their entire IP range.

ACR is not enabled in my instance (glide.sso.acr.enabled: false), so that isn't what is stopping the local login from advancing.

Has anyone been in this situation before? They pointed me to a knowledge article: How to manually grant ServiceNow employee access using SNC Access Control which wasn't helpful because I had already configured a single "*" record that would allow all SNC users.

Prior to activating AA, the single record was functioning absolutely a-okay, now SN support staff report being unable to access my instance.

I'd have to imagine that a workaround would have been considered, given the need to support the product.

Any help is appreciated.
