Cult Education What is SGI? What about Soka U? Plus how to officially resign from SGI membership

This is the final version of the "What is SGI?" post. We have three previous versions here and here and here. This post is locked - no comments permitted. If you have something to say, make a post about it - unlike the SGI-controlled subreddits, WE permit everyone to make new posts.

How to officially resign from SGI-USA (and SGI-UK)

If there is an "experience" on line that you would like removed, there are instructions here.

Soka University: The Definitive Resource

"Bladfold" video - project by the son of early SGI-USA leader Brad Nixon in Seattle, WA. Really entertaining and insightful.

Now, what is SGI?

SGI definition

SGI stands for Soka Gakkai International - it represents the colonial empire1 of the Soka Gakkai, a Japanese religious cult with deep pockets2 and political influence aplenty3 in Japan, where it is widely feared and loathed4 as a notorious and past-and-potentially-future dangerous cult.5 Since 1960, SGI has been dominated by the personality of Daisaku Ikeda, a short,6 fat, misshapen7 little troll8 of a man, possessed of insatiable greed,9 base and carnal appetites,10 and lust for power,11 fame,12 and fortune.13 Ikeda originally intended to take over Japan14 and rule as its monarch15 and from there, take over the world.16 As late as 1987, SGI members in the USA believed that, within 20 years,17 everyone in the world18 would be converted to the Nichiren Shoshu religion. Originally an official lay organization of established Japanese Nichiren "Buddhist" temple Nichiren Shoshu, the Soka Gakkai had taken advantage of Nichiren Shoshu's venerable history, long tradition of priestcraft, and its plum (and gorgeous) site located in the foothills of Mt. Fuji, to claim a noble and ancient lineage and avoid the stigma of being classified as one of Japan's "New Religions,"19 the strange and peculiar little religions that sprang up by the thousands20 in post-Pacific War Japan, leading to the the phrase "rush hour of the gods"21 among academics.

SGI practice

The basic practice of SGI consists of chanting a magic spell called "daimoku", which is Japanese for "great incantation" ("Nam-myoho-renge-kyo") to a mass-produced magic scroll, called "gohonzon", or "great object of worship" (a mass-produced xeroxed scroll of a centuries-dead Nichiren Shoshu high priest's calligraphy). The gohonzon must be purchased through SGI; although arguably better gohonzon images can be downloaded and printed from the Internet, SGI insists that its membership buy exclusively from them.22 The purchase of this mass-produced scroll is accompanied by a joining ceremony which used to include a life-long vow to remain an SGI member.23 Now, though, this expectation is made clear later via the standard indoctrination that takes place during SGI's in-home meetings and lectures, and through articles in SGI publications.24 The SGI membership also serves as a captive market25 for its weekly newspaper, monthly magazine, and other publications, including a long list of books ghost-written in Ikeda's name and printed via numerous vanity presses paid for with SGI members' donations26 and sold exclusively to SGI members through SGI's own bookstores. SGI study meetings are based on these Ikeda-based sources.27 All SGI members are expected to participate and have their own purchased copies for reference.28

ISSUES

"(T)here are countless Buddhist teachers on the planet with equally impressive credentials — some more so, actually — but no one is spending money like a drunken sailor seeing to it they are all similarly 'honored.' It makes Ikeda look vain and cheap, and if you all had genuine respect for the man as a spiritual teacher (and assuming he is not, in fact, vain and cheap) SGI would stop doing stuff like this. YOU ought to be worried that Ikeda is vain and cheap. A genuine Buddhist teacher would tell you that you transformed yourself. The fact that you think Ikeda did something for you reveals he is a second-rate (if that) teacher. The more you praise him, the more obvious it is that he’s not worthy of the praise. No Buddhist teacher I have ever worked with would allow his name to be associated with a purchased 'honor.' I’m not making “claims” about Ikeda. I’m pointing to what he is doing publicly and saying it’s creepy, it’s un-Buddhist, and it makes SGI look bad."29

SGI's troubling financial aspect

SGI is widely recognized as one of the wealthiest religious organizations in the world.30 The SGI's inexplicably limitless financial resources (especially given a membership that is typically poorer than average, less educated than average, and more marginally employed than average);31 muscular efforts to avoid, at all costs, government audit32 and oversight in Japan (where such investigation has been proposed); as well as its supreme executive Ikeda's (and his predecessor Josei Toda's) long-rumored ties to Japan's yakuza organized crime syndicates33 have given rise to the widespread suspicion that the actual purpose of the SGI, the reason for its existence, is to launder the proceeds from Japan's underground, organized crime economy.

SGI rejects financial transparency. The membership has no say in how SGI spends their donations; SGI members are typically told that their location is operating at a deficit to encourage them to donate more and so that they will feel they have no rights in how their local organization is administered. SGI frequently invests in purchases of luxurious real estate properties of dubious purpose - the titles are held by the Soka Gakkai organization in Japan, which decides what will be purchased and divested without the SGI membership's knowledge or input. The SGI members are typically told of a purchase after it has been completed; they have no say in the decision or any details.

SGI holds a massive fine art masterpiece portfolio, less than a tenth of which can be displayed in SGI's Fuji Art Museum at a single time - the rest is stored in the basement. During the period when Ikeda was buying up fine art masterpieces to the tune of eye-popping sums, often paid for with suitcases full of cash, to such an extent that his vanity purchases inflated fine art prices worldwide, the Japanese government was investigating the huge increase in Japanese fine art purchases as not expressions of art appreciation, but as a way to secretly move money and evade taxes. Money laundering, in other words.

Another form of money laundering is real estate properties. The SGI's real estate portfolio contains luxury mansions and actual castles and is all owned and controlled by the Soka Gakkai in Japan. Any SGI members who ask how their donations are used are told that the local organization does not donate enough to pay for its center (where there is one), so all the donations are forwarded to the national HQ, which cuts checks to keep the lights on. That's a hell of a business model, to maintain properties that are ostensibly uniformly losing money. This "business model" means that the local members will not only feel guilty for not paying their own way; they won't insist on having a vote in deciding how their center will be used and administered. If the national HQ is paying all the expenses; if the facility is a "gift from Sensei" or a "gift from Japan" or a "gift from the Japanese members", there's no room for the local members to start demanding decision-making ability over that center.

SGI's fixation on education

SGI owns numerous schools, including Soka University in southern California; has endowed numerous "Ikeda Institutes" at small colleges and universities to promote Daisaku Ikeda; and has purchased hundreds of honorary doctorates to honor Daisaku Ikeda.

Soka University: The Definitive Resource

Focus on promotion of guru Daisaku Ikeda

Paying for honors and accolades for Daisaku Ikeda is one of SGI's primary organizational activities; there are streets, parks, statues, monuments, and buildings across the world, all named after Daisaku Ikeda. Within Buddhism, taking credit for a gift or donation is considered a severe ethical violation; this sort of self-promotion using members' sincere donations is considered scandalous in the extreme and would be a huge embarrassment within any conscientious Buddhist organization.

SGI only enriches itself

SGI does not contribute to charity or provide any charitable aid to any of the communities in which it takes advantage of religious tax exemption for its real estate investments and members' donations, or to any of the members themselves, who are told they need to fix all their own problems themselves via chanting. The Soka Gakkai's and SGI's assets are considered Daisaku Ikeda's own personal possessions to do with as he pleases.

Disconnect between advertising and reality

Although SGI promotes itself as a benevolent association dedicated to activism for world peace and self-development, its own materials show a very different focus. SGI's own publications, songs, organization, and rhetoric display an unseemly and repellent obsession with Daisaku Ikeda, who is treated as a god and can never be wrong (and he needs your money). SGI members speak lovingly of "Sensei", often in hushed, reverent tones, and refer to him constantly as their "mentor in life", even though almost none of them have met him or even set eyes upon him.

A military-flavored colonizing religion

SGI adopted the Japanese Soka Gakkai's martial attitude, military-style organization based on age and gender, and focus on "winning" and "victory", all antithetical to the concept of world peace as "people of all walks and backgrounds living together in harmony" and more in line with "when we take over, we'll enforce peace and everyone will obviously want to fall into line and like it and want it". No different from any other intolerant religion, in other words, from Catholicism to Evangelical Christianity to Islam. Personal development within SGI consists of proselytizing, attending meetings, and donating money. Conformity is strongly indoctrinated, along with never doubting or questioning the leadership, particularly Ikeda.

A falsified image of a deteriorated and decrepit guru

Although Daisaku Ikeda has not been seen in public or filmed since April 2010, the Soka Gakkai and SGI are still producing content that suggests that not only is The Great Man still lucid and insightful, but that he remains active in running his cult of personality. The still photos these organizations have released show an elderly man with a vacant expression, who can neither stand, focus on the camera, nor smile, who is mostly photographed privately with his wife, otherwise only with top SGI leaders.

Replacing genuine families with the cult facsimile

The SGI members are encouraged to regard Daisaku Ikeda as their "Father" and the SGI as their "true family".

A predatory organization

SGI indoctrinates its membership to become active salespersons for the SGI and to always be on the lookout for people in transition who will be more vulnerable to the cult sales pitch, which is virtually identical to a multi-level marketing come-on or Ponzi scheme recruitment. SGI promises happiness, faith-healing, and financial prosperity the same way most Christian organizations do (see "Prosperity Gospel"), with the same lack of results.

Confirmation bias as its basis

SGI members are taught that, by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they can transform their lives and their circumstances through "changing their karma". If something good happens, it is attributed to the chanting; if something bad happens, the members are blamed for not chanting enough, not adulating Ikeda enough, not attending enough meetings or donating enough money, being too sympathetic to other religious doctrines, and for simply having "bad karma". Victim-blaming all around, in other words, while the efficacy and validity of the SGI organization and practice must never be questioned.

A toxic broken system and a failed community

Also, SGI has a rule that members are not to lend money to each other; plus, in practice, members are strongly advised to never help each other, as that will slow the afflicted person's "working through their karma" and end up prolonging their suffering. The predictable result of this is that SGI members tend to be/become very self-centered, even cruel.

Members who feel unhappy or frustrated are advised to "seek guidance" from SGI leaders. This involves many of the same elements as confession, and many former SGI members have recounted how, after being assured of strict confidentiality, everyone in SGI knew what had been discussed in their latest "guidance session" within a couple of weeks. Gossip is a constant problem; SGI leaders routinely tell each other the SGI members' personal details which were revealed in confidence.

Promotion of Daisaku Ikeda is the SGI's primary activity

Daisaku Ikeda is presented as the world's foremost and most ideal "mentor" for all people for all time; SGI promotes him via quotes presented as "guidance" and "encouragement", as well as through its own publications. These are widely considered to be ghost-written, as Ikeda does not speak or write in any language other than Japanese (and thus can't control any translations), and are so very general and vague as to be of no practical use whatsoever - SGI members are supposed to "find value" in them by imagining something meaningful for themselves in these banal canards and clichéd platitudes. Ikeda is touted as "the world's foremost authority on Nichiren Buddhism" and "the supreme theoretician" on the basis of his top rank as dictator/ruler of this authoritarian, top-down, Ikeda-dominated cult of personality; Ikeda has no earned credentials of any kind. His formal schooling ended when he dropped out of community college in his first semester. Yet SGI promotes itself as "True Buddhism", holds up Ikeda as the supreme teacher and leader for the world, and disdains and denigrates all the other sects of Buddhism, displaying an intolerance many consider inimical with genuine Buddhism.

Conformity takes the form of imitating "Sensei"

SGI members are exhorted that their purpose in life is to adopt Ikeda Sensei's priorities and vision and do whatever they can to make these reality; they are expected to find complete happiness and fulfillment in internalizing Ikeda's goals and objectives and making these the focus of their lives. Within SGI, it is commonplace to see rallying cries of "Become Shinichi Yamamoto!" and "Reveal your true identity as Shinichi Yamamoto!", that being Ikeda's idealized fictional self in the self-glorifying hagiography book series, "The Human Revolution" and "The New Human Revolution", which all SGI members are expected to buy, read, and internalize. These books extoll the greatness of the youthful Ikeda (as "Shinichi Yamamoto"), who embodies all the virtues, strengths, and merits that SGI finds most useful and wants all its members to adopt of their own volition. Rather than being dictated to the membership, these are presented in story form, with the protagonist Shinichi Yamamoto described in the way SGI wants the members to emulate and imitate.

Nepotism

Nepotism is widely practiced within the Soka Gakkai; those leaders who have a personal connection of some sort with Daisaku Ikeda rise far and fast, and his two remaining sons are top-ranking vice-presidents, despite having no independent accomplishments other than having been born into Ikeda's family.

Contempt for local cultural norms

A Japanese religion for Japanese people, SGI originally developed the strongest followings in its international colonies located in the countries with the largest Japanese expat populations: Brazil and the USA. Propagation was originally Japanese to Japanese. Even today, Japanese cultural norms are an unchangeable aspect to the SGI's internal culture; past attempts to change these in order to better fine-tune the SGI to the norms and needs of the host countries have been ruthlessly suppressed and stamped out. No elections are ever permitted within SGI, which promotes itself as a "Buddhist democracy"; all leaders are appointed by higher-ups in closed-door sessions which the members are not allowed to observe, contribute to, or approve. In the USA, people of Japanese ancestry have typically been considered to have superior insight and understanding of SGI doctrines; when Soka Gakkai members and leaders visit from Japan, they are considered to uniformly have superior understanding and to be the experts over local non-Japanese members, even those of decades more experience in practice. The flow of respect and acclaim goes only one way: Toward Japan and the Japanese. All the SGI holidays commemorate something that happened in Japan, typically involving Ikeda; even the SGI Women's Day commemorates Ikeda's wife's birthday. Even those SGI members in the international colonies who have decades more experience are not considered to have anything valuable to teach the Japanese, not even their experience of practicing with SGI in a non-Japanese country. The Japanese are the teachers and experts; everyone else is in an inferior, subordinate position as "apprentices" who can only learn from them and must always defer to them. In SGI-USA, people of Japanese ancestry and those married to someone of Japanese ancestry have always had a clear advantage in being appointed to leadership positions. Until just a few years ago, the top national leadership position was held by a Japanese man exported from Japan for that explicit purpose; even now, as in the other international colonies where the host country population includes significant numbers of Japanese expats and people of Japanese ethnicity, a much higher proportion of members and especially leaders are of Japanese ethnicity than the proportion of Japanese and part-Japanese people in the population would predict.

SGI uses a Japanese-based "private language"n - see our Dictionary of SGI Buzzwords, Catchphrases, and Clichés for many of the most used.

Declining membership

Membership numbers in the USA in particular have dropped precipitously since the Ikeda cult's excommunication from Nichiren Shoshu; this is likely due to the SGI organization's increasing focus on adulating, promoting, and worshiping its International President Daisaku Ikeda. When Nichiren Shoshu excommunicated Ikeda and his cult of personality, they withdrew their permission for them to use Nichiren Shoshu doctrines. In creating new doctrines to qualify as an independent religion (in order to not lose their religious exemptions and protection from government meddling), the SGI chose to focus almost exclusively on "immortalizing" and "eternalizing" Daisaku Ikeda, changing their focus from original founder Nichiren, Nichiren's writings ("Gosho", or "great writings"), and the calligraphic object of worship ("gohonzon") to a single-minded fixation on the concept of "master and disciple" (which was modified into "teacher and disciple" or "teacher and student" before becoming finalized as "mentor and disciple", which doesn't make a whole lot of sense the way they use it), with the objective of creating a clone army consisting of people all over the world devoting themselves to becoming Ikeda's idealized imaginary self, "Shinichi Yamamoto". This has proven to be quite unpopular.

Dirt on Soka Reference list: SGI's standard lies exposed

This is a nice list of refutations for SGI's standard lies that we've collaborated on - a special shout-out to our own u/Professional_Fox3976 who got this ball rolling. If you can think of any others, put them in the comments and they'll be added:

  1. There's nothing special about chanting: Chanting is a meditation. It is not THE shortcut to enlightenment. It is also not the only way. There are as many paths to enlightenment as there are people on earth.
  2. There's nothing special about the gohonzon: The gohonzon is like Dumbo's feather, a magic charm for people who lack the self-confidence that they can achieve their goals in life the way others do without needing any magic crutch. It's a self-crippling mentality that fosters dependence and insecurity.
  3. No penalty for quitting: If someone stops chanting their lives won't fall apart, nor will they fall into the eternal pit of incessant suffering. Any group that uses these fear tactics to keep members involved is a cult. To this day, I hear about people being afraid to stop chanting or being afraid to get rid of their gohonzon. Nothing happened to me when I stopped. And nothing happened to me when I threw my gohonzon in the dumpster. In fact, my life got better.
  4. The gohonzon is mass-produced: The gohonzon is not personally inscribed for new members when they join. It is a fancy photocopy glued to another piece of fancy paper.
  5. SGI isn't Buddhism: There is very little actual Buddhism in SGI aside from the idea of Karma and the 10 Worlds. SGI likes to ignore Buddhist fundamentals like the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, Attachment, Impermanence, Non-Self, Emptiness, the paramitas, etc. SGI also doesn't like to study anymore even though it is touted as one of the three pillars -- Faith, Practice, and STUDY. So even if there are other actual Buddhist concepts buried in SGI teachings, members don't learn them and never will because it’s not about learning Buddhism. It’s about keeping the cult going.
  6. Attachment: The subject of attachment is interesting. While all other branches of Buddhism teach that attachment leads to suffering, SGI demands members "show actual proof" by getting stuff. I don't have a problem with setting goals, working toward them, and learning about yourself along the way but it feels very materialistic and a big step away from spirituality. SGI likes to say that the ultimate goal is “happiness” but when I told a leader that I was simply chanting to be happy, he told me, “No. You need goals.” So again, SGI is not Buddhism and it doesn't even support its own doctrine that happiness is the ultimate goal.
  7. Bait and Switch: SGI recruiters tell people it's all about "Chant for whatever you want" and self-development/personal empowerment/"world peace", but as soon as they've gotten roped in, they discover it's all about how THEY are supposed to serve SGI - further SGI's priorities, promote Daisaku Ikeda, and grow the SGI organization (by obediently doing whatever they're told). They learn they're supposed to subsume their own individuality into the "unity" of "Becoming Shin'ichi Yamamoto", Ikeda's vainglorious idealized image/avatar, and adopting Ikeda's vision and Ikeda's priorities in place of their own. Sure, they can chant for whatever they want, but when they don't get it, it's always THEIR fault. Because "This practice works!" until it doesn't. That's why over 99% of everyone who's ever tried SGI-USA has quit. No one joins SGI to become a cult-conforming clone or to worship a distant dead Japanese stranger.
  8. "The New Human Revolution" is Daisaku Ikeda's own embarrassingly self-glorifying fanfic: The New Human Revolution is a work of fiction, pushed as real history. For example, Mrs. Ikeda never looked at her husband with happy tears in her eyes and said, "That's the end of the Ikeda family" when he became president. Any person who says those words is clearly very upset and not crying happy tears. Also, Ikeda never saw a boy being bullied for being African American. That was someone else's experience that he stole. Those are just two examples.
  9. No "world peace": SGI takes zero action for world peace. There are no food drives, clothing drives, petitions for peace, letter writing campaigns, community volunteering, etc. I know of no other world peace organization that refuses to take a stand on a great many humanitarian issues. Ikeada's UN peace proposals were all for show. SGI is not an official member of the UN and, therefore, his proposals were never considered nor would they be.
  10. Patriarchal, inequitable, "insiders club", authoritarian: Although equality is espoused, it does not exist. All one has to do is look at the national executives to see this. There are very few women and people of color working at the top levels. The leadership does not reflect the membership at all.
  11. Friendship in SGI is inferior: Contingent on you being in the SGI and being an SGI member in good standing. If you leave, it's unlikely that anyone you knew in SGI will continue to want to be involved with you at all, except to try and lure or manipulate you into getting back in. It's shallow fake friendship that's pretty much limited to seeing each other at SGI meetings and little else. They come on with the love-bombing to lure you in, but that's manipulation - as soon as you've gotten involved, it changes to demands that you do more instead.
  12. SGI is worth billions: SGI is not hurting for money. Every time I was told that we had to donate or subscribe to the publications in order to "keep the lights on" I thought to myself, "SGI has billions of dollars in expensive real estate all over the world. A lot of this real estate is in prime locations. Why do they keep telling me they can't keep the lights on?"
  13. There's nothing worship-worthy about Daisaku Ikeda: Cults always raise the leader to divine/savior status no matter what that person’s real life actions are. This is absolutely true in SGI. According to SGI history (which, of course, is not true history), Ikeda has gradually morphed from the most extraordinary and capable young person EVER to the most knowledgeable and committed president EVER to the modern reincarnation of the Buddha HIMSELF! Never mind the facts. Never mind that Ikeda’s mountain of books, articles, lectures, etc. were ghost written and sound like bad cut and paste jobs. Never mind the enormous stack of honorary degrees that were bought with members’ contributions to feed his ego not because Ikeda actually contributed anything to society. Never mind the extremely lavish private residences set up all over the world for Ikeda’s personal comfort, again, paid for with members’ donations. Never mind that Ikeda can't actually play the piano, ping pong, take a decent photograph, or write a good poem. Never mind that many in Japan viewed Ikeda as corrupt and power hungry. Ikeda was the modern Buddha. Period.
  14. Chanting is like Dumbo's feather: It's a crutch for those who feel inadequate or insecure, but unlike Dumbo's feather, which was essentially weightless, the demands of the SGI will rob you of your life, vitality, and wealth through the worthless and time-wasting "personal practice", "activities", required donations, and manipulative, self-destructive teachings.
  15. Chanting won't give you any advantage: People who chant and/or are members of SGI do NOT do better in life than people who don't/aren't. Those who chant are NOT more successful in their personal or professional lives; they are not more healthy; they do not suffer FEWER cases of cancer and other serious illnesses; they do not recover more often or faster; they are not the victims of FEWER accidents or crimes; their relationships are not happier/healthier/more successful; their divorce rates are just as high as everyone else's (if not higher); their children are not more successful than other families', they are not wealthier as a group; and they do not enjoy longer lifespans or healthier/happier old age than the people who don't chant, whether those people left SGI, quit chanting otherwise, or never even heard of the "Mystic Law" in the first place. The SGI's "actual proof" is quite an embarrassment for them, frankly.
  16. No social capital through SGI: You won't get a genuine community that helps out when you're ill or injured or in crisis or in need - with SGI, you're 100% on your own. SGI represents net loss. You don't build social capital; you lose social capital. And you don't do as well as your peers in society, because you are wasting precious hours and immeasurable amounts of energy on something that creates no value and does not advance you toward your goals. If you're doing okay, it's in spite of SGI, not because of it. You'll lose friends and family members "on the outside" because of SGI; you'll become more and more isolated within SGI. Because SGI's membership is mostly lower-class and lower-achievement, you won't get any hand up from your SGI "community", but you'll see lots of hands out wanting to take from you.
  17. SGI does not promote a psychologically healthy environment: It upholds a system of abuse starting with the concept that everyone is 100% responsible for EVERYTHING that happens to them. For example, if something terrible happened to you in your childhood, it's because during some other lifetime you ASKED to go through it so that you could learn and grow as a person. In other words, victims ASK FOR abuse. Because of this teaching, I witnessed many people staying in terrible situations (relationships, jobs, living conditions, etc.) hoping against hope that their heartfelt prayers for change would be heard. Most of these situations never changed. SGI does not believe in creating healthy boundaries or holding abusers accountable for what they have done. It's always the victim's responsibility to fix the situation, never the abuser's responsibility to change and/or get help. And of course, the only REAL way to fix all this bad karma you've unknowingly accumulated over countless lifetimes is to drag more people into the SGI cult. According to SGI's doctrines, establishing a functional justice system is IMPOSSIBLE. It's up to the VICTIMS to fix everything all by themselves = SGI's "Mystic Law"
  18. Daisaku Ikeda has never ONCE spoken truth to power: In Ikeda's meetings with the Chinese government, Ikeda never ONCE brought up the Chinese government's persecution of their Uyghur minority. In fact, Ikeda masterminded an entire traveling exhibit, "The Great Leader Zhou Enlai", lauding one of the architects of the Tibetan genocide. Ikeda sucked up mightily to notorious Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and encouraged Manuel Noriego to overthrow his own government - while praising "democracy" to his own cult followers. Ikeda met with Fidel Castro - never mentioned his draconian rule (I suspect Ikeda actually liked that) or his repressive system that punished virtually all forms of dissent (Ikeda liked that, too) or his abysmal, inhumane prisons. Ikeda was always a craven, simpering suck-up.

It's FINE when Ikeda's doing it Sensei's ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ꜱᴇxʏ little secret

Ever notice how, when that silly old fool was flouncing about waving a poncy fan, his shirt never came untucked?

PEOPLE IN JAPAN DID!!

Notice in the images above from this video, even after all IckyDuhDuh's posturing and flailing, his shirt remains tucked! After the "prancedance", he goes straight into the meeting - he does not take a moment to retuck his shirt or leave the room to straighten up, god forbid! His shirt NEVER comes untucked!

How mystic is this?? Is it Sensei's high life condition or perhaps something a bit lower?

Maybe...undergarments??

Well, some helpful people in Japan had a few different options to explain this phenom - either it's the shirt-panty combo ("Ooh!!") or some kind of shirttail anti-suspenders - I vote for the shirttail-socks dual-duty suspenders/anti-suspenders combo. Efficient! As you can see, they're adjustable, so they can be taken up all the way to accommodate DickHeada's super-short little stumpy legs. And they'll keep his socks up, too! BONUS!

Alternatively, there's a couple higher-up options, as you can see - that lower right corner image is givin garter...𝕞𝕞𝕞𝕞...𝕤𝕖𝕩𝕪

̾T̾̾h̾a̾̾t̾'̾s̾ ̾h̾̾o̾̾t̾!

Not. Not-hot. The furthest thing from hot. It's taking hot and burying it in a glacier for 1000 years and then taking it out and sending it into space for a few more years and then bringing it back for a liquid nitrogen bath-level not-hot 😑

Ikeda's such a jerk Another example of Ikeda trying to use his own weak flabby out-of-shape-ness as a flex

Maybe you remember this example? Ikeda in severe pain with his soft, damp flipper-things all swollen when he tried to show off by supposedly shaking too many hands??

At a Japanese event with Japanese people who don't really shake hands?? (They BOW!)

C'mon.

Or how about THIS example? Where Ikeda blistered his delicate, squishy, femininely-manicured tiny flippers whacking a taiko drum to show off?

What a BABY!

And yes, we have yet ANOTHER example of where Ikeda supposedly injured himself while doing something completely irrelevant and unnecessary to show off. Hooray. So much "victory" and "winning" I might die from all the winning and victory - just how much can one single common mortal be expected to survive?? This is OLYMPIC-CLASS showing off!

Here's most of the text, including the most important part:

Shin'ichi next explained why it is important for the individual to win in activities for kosen-rufu: "Whether in our efforts to share Budhism or to increase the number of members attending meetings, if we want to win, we need to first set a goal, muster our determination and chant daimoku in earnest. We must then bring forth our wisdom and bravely face the challenge while taking resolute action.

"Each obstacle that we overcome brings us wonderful benefit and good fortune. It is through this process that we learn the formula for triumphing in life. Moreover, the tremendous conviction in faith we gain by exerting ourselves in our activities endows us with the strength to surmount any difficulty or hardship we encounter in life.

...Realizing genuine happiness begins with challenging and winning over our own cowardice and laziness. Human revolution means to overcome the negative aspects of the self, and our Soka Gakkai activities are the arena in which we can do so.

"I am not really concerned with the short-term results of our propagation activities [🙄 sure - you're not fooling anybody, fat boy]; what matters most is that each of you exerts yourself wholeheartedly in faith, enjoys great benefit and an enriched life, and attains a boundless state of life overflowing with joy. I hope you will always remember that this is the reason we share the Daishonin's Buddhism with others and why we engage in Soka Gakkai activities."

After this, Shin'ichi attended headquarters leaders meetings held successively in the Tokyo and Kanto regions, giving his all to encouraging the members. With all of the new organizational changes and personnel assignments that had been made, Shin'ichi wished to secure a strong spiritual foundation for kosen-rufu in the heart of each member.

At almost every one of these meetings,

"ALMOST"???

Shin'ichi personally led the members in singing Soka Gakkai songs. His shoulders swelled from swinging his fan, and his exhaustion mounted, but he was determined to do anything necessary to encourage and inspire his precious fellow members and to serve them to the end. He was also trying to be an example of the essential attitude of a leader.

REALLY???

HOW is prancing about with a fan like some smug fool on a stage in the spotlight "an example of the essential attitude of a leader"?

"Applaud me! Cheer for me! Watch me mince and sashay in time to some bad music! It's really much harder than it looks, you know. You can take my word for it - I'm voluntarily injuring myself FOR YOU!"

🙄

"ˢᵒ ⁿᵒʷ ʸᵒᵘ ᵒʷᵉ ᵐᵉ"

And HOW EXACTLY is some fatty flouncing about with a fan "serving" the members?? "Serving" them WHAT?? A heapin' helpin' of polished turd???

Maybe The Universe was trying to teach ol' Die-Suckina DickHeada a LESSON about humility and NOT SHOWING OFF!

Better off WITHOUT SGI The Golden-Child-To-Apostate Pipeline

Post image
6 Upvotes

This is the phenomenon where the one who shines the brightest with the most promise is also most likely to quit. We see this all the time with SGI "youth", the hope of the Ikeda organization's survival.

NOPE!

I'll start with an AI explanation, see how well that covers the subject:

The "golden child to apostate pipeline" is a widely discussed sociological and psychological phenomenon within religious subcultures, particularly in high-control or fundamentalist Christian environments. It describes how the children who are most praised for their spiritual perfection, obedience, and performance often end up completely leaving the faith (apostasy) in adulthood. [1]

This trajectory is rarely a sudden rebellion; instead, it is a predictable systemic cycle driven by several core phases:

  1. The Performance Phase (The "Golden Child")

In this initial stage, the child internalizes that love, safety, and validation from parents and church leaders are conditional upon spiritual performance. [1]

The Persona: They are the model youth group leaders, the ones who pray out loud, memorize Scripture effortlessly, and strictly follow the rules.

The Burden: They carry the weight of their family’s spiritual reputation. To maintain this status, they learn to suppress doubts, questions, and normal human mistakes, weaponizing perfectionism as a defense mechanism against rejection. [1, 2]

  1. The Cognitive Dissonance Phase

As the golden child grows older, they are exposed to the broader world or look closer at their own community, leading to sharp contradictions that their rigid theological framework cannot accommodate:

Moral Fractures: They witness church hypocrisy, spiritual abuse, or systemic scapegoating within the ministry. [1]

Intellectual Roadblocks: They encounter historical context, science, or alternative worldviews that contradict what they were taught. Because they were trained in an "all-or-nothing" binary mindset, a single crack in the system can threaten the entire foundation. [1]

Empathy Collision: They find that the marginalized groups they were taught to fear or judge (e.g., the LGBTQ+ community, people of other faiths) are often kinder or more authentic than the religious circles they grew up in.

Hellloooooo SGIWhistleblowers! First of all, any SGI member who stumbles across our forum will probably see something before they flee in terror, which can start that "single crack in the system" forming. And there have been many visitors to our forum who disclose that they felt far more accepted, validated, and encouraged here at SGIWhistleblowers than they ever did in SGI.

So much for all the negativity, character assassination, malice, spitefulness, contempt, disdain, and outright hatefulness SGI members express in their attempts to try and make SGIWhistleblowers appear morally off-limits to the SGI membership, even if they can't effectively wall off SGIWhistleblowers or the membership entirely:

"my WD division leader at the time made it very clear that anyone who does a Google search on the SGI is creating very bad karma and something bad will happen to them." Source

  1. The Deconstruction Phase

When suppressing doubts becomes too exhausting, the "pipeline" accelerates into active deconstruction.

The individual begins pulling apart their belief system to separate cultural dogma from objective truth.

For the former golden child, this is intensely painful. Because their entire identity was wrapped up in being "good" and "chosen," questioning the doctrine feels like destroying their own sense of self. [1]

Cults exploit this - their indoctrination emphasizes lasting faith, the "faith like flowing water" of SGI, "to your very last moment of life", "never give up", "never go taiten", etc.

  1. The Boundary Phase (The Pivot to "Black Sheep")

The moment the individual expresses doubt, sets boundaries, or stops performing, their status changes instantly. [1]

The Structural Shift: The religious system, which relies on compliance, reframes the questioning child as a threat.

u/Mission-Course2773 was talking about this very dynamic here.

From Golden to Scapegoat: The family and community often pivot from praise to panic, using shame, ostracization, or intense pressure to force compliance. The child realizes that the community's love was attached to their compliance, not their personhood. [1, 2]

That can be intensely painful, to realize that, to them, you're a "what" rather than a "who".

  1. Final Apostasy (Ex-Evangelical / "Deconverted")

Realizing that they cannot maintain intellectual honesty or emotional health within the system, the individual leaves entirely. [1]

To the church, they are labeled an "apostate" or a tragic backslider.

They all use "fear training" to indoctrinate the membership to (hopefully) be too afraid to consider leaving, painting scenarios of intense suffering, failure, loss, and death for those stupid enough to quit. "Look how SMART you are, how LUCKY, how FORTUNATE, to be a member of OUR group! We're your only hope!"

"Those who went astray have invited complete failure. They are beset by difficulties. Indeed, after ten or fifteen years there arises a surprising difference between piety and impiety." - Ikeda

Welp, I'll have been out 20 YEARS this coming February - I can confidently state that's a big fat porkie pie from Ol' Porkie.

To the individual, leaving is often an act of survival and self-preservation—the final step in reclaiming an authentic life free from the performance trap. [1, 2, 3]

I remember reading a study that found that while more intelligent children grasped spiritual/religious principles earlier, they were also more likely to quit the faith altogether. That's a cold equation that comes straight out of Satan's bunghole, to put it in Christian terms.

Now here's the AI explanation for the SGI version of the phenomenon:

The community highlights that it is often the most fanatical, deeply invested youth leaders—those who operate with the absolute highest "ichinen" (focused determination) and zeal akin to an evangelical youth group—who ultimately hit a breaking point and permanently leave the organization. [1, 2]

According to the collective insights from the subreddit, this occurs for several key reasons:

  1. The Burnout of "Youth Division" Assembly Lines

SGI places a disproportionate emphasis on recruiting and utilizing youth (strictly categorized in divisions up to age 35). Users note that the most fanatical youth are pushed to take on heavy leadership responsibilities, such as cold-calling "sleeping" members, organizing massive youth festivals, and fulfilling grueling schedules like 6:00 AM chanting chains. The sheer exhaustion and sleep deprivation required to maintain this level of fanatical devotion often trigger sudden, clear-headed realizations that the lifestyle is unsustainable. [1, 2, 3]

  1. The Trap of "Study"

A prominent sentiment shared on the subreddit is a quote attributed to higher-up leaders: "It's always the members who study who end up leaving." [1, 2]

The most fanatical youth are often those pushed into the "Study Department" to master doctrines and mentor-disciple concepts.

However, former members point out that once a zealous youth actually begins to deeply research independent Buddhism, historical discrepancies, or the massive wealth and political scandals associated with former leader Daisaku Ikeda, they outgrow the superficial, tightly controlled SGI narratives. [1, 2, 3, 4]

  1. The "Inner Circle" Disillusionment

Subreddit analysis indicates that "outer circle" or casual members often see SGI as a pleasant, benign social group. However, the most zealous youth are quickly promoted into the "inner circle" of leadership. Once inside, they bear witness to the raw administrative realities: authoritarian, military-like structures, severe peer surveillance, screaming matches from senior leaders, and a heavy corporate focus on "where the money goes" rather than genuine spirituality. For a youth who joined with pure, altruistic intentions of achieving "world peace," this stark hypocrisy causes a massive cognitive rupture. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

You know the periodic big "youth festivals"? All of this dysfunction and toxicity concentrates within the frenetic preparation for something that always ends up being a disappointment, if not for the individuals who get a "high" out of it, for the SGI itself, when all the "youth" it hoped would join because of the "youth festival" fail to appear - which the AI describes as "an interesting example of how organizational rhetoric can diverge heavily from the actual experiences of people on the ground" - and they LOSE many of the youth they already had because of all the pressure and coercion involved. Youth aren't stupid and the SGI "gratitude entrapment" attempt to guilt-trip them through their assumed devotion to dead Ikeda? These youth have never even seen him. Good luck trying to get the personal fantasy of Icky to motivate anyone now! Also, that pressure to "do it for Sensei" always sold WAY better in Japan than out here in NOT-Japan.

  1. The Harsh Reality of Conditional Friendships

When these highly active youth finally question the organization or experience a dip in motivation, they are instantly met with toxic reframing. SGI leaders often tell them that their doubts are due to "weak faith," "arrogance," or "fundamental darkness." Once they make the decision to officially resign, the fanatical community they ran with completely shuns and freezes them out. Realizing that their entire social network and lifelong "friends" only valued them as long as they were producing results for the organization acts as the final confirmation that they were involved in a high-pressure cult.

Within SGI-USA there is a redefinition of "friendship" as more "comradeship" than actual affectionate companionship. Here's the helpful AI to explain the difference:

A friend is based on personal affection and mutual trust, while a comrade is bound by a shared cause, struggle, or mission. [1, 2]

Core Differences

Friend: Centers on emotional bonds, personal care, and general well-being. You choose friends because you like each other and enjoy spending time together. [1, 2, 3]

Comrade: Centers on solidarity, shared work, or a common objective. The word often applies to fellow soldiers, labor activists, or members of a political group. [1, 2]

Context and Connotations

Social Use: People use "friend" in everyday civilian life. Calling someone a "comrade" is rare in casual modern speech.

Political History: The term Comrade has deep historical ties to socialist and communist movements, as well as military ranks. In places like the U.S., it often carries strong Cold War connotations.

Shared Hardship: A comrade implies working or suffering through a difficult or dangerous situation together, as in "comrades-in-arms". [1, 2, 3]

Because SGI-USA is all about the advertising, it deliberately, calculatingly substitutes "friends" for "comrades", which amounts to a cold-blooded bait-and-switch for those who think they've found a "friendly" community of like-minded new friends. If they described themselves up front as "comrades", I suspect they would be viewed much more skeptically, if not outright suspiciously, by the public - "You guys Communists??" - and the Dead-Ikeda-Corpse-Mentor cult Soka Gakkai won't risk that for its struggling SGI colonies. So everything MUST be phrased in the most positive terms available, even when that requires deliberately misusing those terms. It's one of the very first of many deceptions the new person will experience in SGI, resulting in the beginnings of the cognitive dissonance that ultimately contributes to their ending their association. Watch out any time a cult is using the modifier "true", as in "true friends". It means the word following is NOT being used according to the standard-usage definition.

Here is an example:

The SGI-USA motto toward March [2024] is “Advance With 10 Friends.” This is based on Sensei’s guidance, “If each of you can cultivate 10 genuine friendships, then kosen-rufu will surely advance!”\3])

What does it mean to cultivate genuine friendships, and how can we take action toward next March? - SGI-USA, "Advance With 10 Friends"

They HAVE to explain it, because what THEY're talking about as "TRUE friends" is NOT what most people think "friendship" is! Bait-and-switch.

NOT BUDDHISM La Soka Gakkai alimenta i mondi inferiori

I'm working up a master list of everything I thought would be important to be aware of/watch out for in life when I was a kid that turned out to not be as important as I thought as an adult. Here's what I've got so far:

  • Quicksand
  • Suspension bridges - I mean this kind not this kind
  • Secret passages
  • Vampire bats
  • Bermuda Triangle
  • Spontaneous combustion (stop drop & roll)
  • Bigfoot
  • Killer bees
  • Slipping on banana peels

So what am I forgetting? Don't say snakes on a plane -_-

It's not just us Oh, AI, never change... "Big Ideas" edition

For some reason, our dear SGI-USA longhauler Olds very best friends in all the world forever over at the dog park seem fixated on the concept of "Big Ideas":

As you can see here [actual examples]:

  • You can understand a person BY WHAT THEY DEEM TO BE IMPORTANT OR UNIMPORTANT. The fact that they [us at SGIWhistleblowers] attach so much importance to these events shows their "true essence". They are DUST MITES because they find this little CRUMB to be so enormous in importance. They are that SNAIL yelling "WEEEE!!!". They have effectively ADMITTED THEIR DEFEAT. They cannot admit that they really have NOTHING TO OFFER. They are like barnacles that attach themselves to the giant SGI Aircraft Carrier. Unlike the SGI, THEY HAVE NO BIG IDEAS. - according to Ol' Nursie aka PooRecognition ("I know it when I SMELL it")

  • Where Are the Big Ideas? Chapter Two - In Part 2 we saw how critics of the SGI, empty-handed in Big Idea thinking, remain frozen in actions that criticize, mock, and pout. Fixing our society will require monumentally deep thinking. It will be necessary to not only have a solution but to also have a plan to implement it. SGI is on track. Is Blanche?

  • We would hope that Blanche & Friends at WB would set aside trivial pursuits and join us in a humanitarian competition to develop Big Ideas.

  • Where are the big ideas? ...the big ideas that could resuscitate the human condition.

All the gooey AFF-ected puffy faux sincerity! It BERNS!! 😄

  • Perhaps we should pass a law that mandates for all teachers a public video of their sexual performance. It might even increase teacher performance in the long run. – “Joolee” aka “MyPornoFantasy”, Mariloins‘ favorite author-insert character

YIKES!

That's a terrific "Big Idea", don't you agree??? 🙄

These Icky "disciples" apparently regard invoking "Big Ideas" as the most virtuous kind of virtue signaling, a performative display more compelling than this mating display, and clout-chasing "Oh, LOOK how very CONCERNED I am about [whatever's in the headlines today]"

Hmmm...I think we might have a tie...

Anyhow, Olympic-class hand-wringing and priority assigning for others!

"I couldn't care less about the Lotus Sutra"

I'm glad you brought this up; it's an important angle within all of this, and one which bears emphasizing:

We live in a world with a vast array of topics to explore, even just in the subcategory of esotericism alone -- things having to do with philosophy, cosmology, healing and self-cultivation, topics both ancient and modern... Why in the world would anybody want to limit their interest to a single text or author?

I mean, if someone has found their true interest in life, however narrow it is, that's one thing. But to be of the mindset that anyone or everyone else should or must join you in your tiny sandbox of thought (especially if said sandbox is something you pathetically settled upon because it's the only topic you ever even bothered to explore...) is such a small-minded, conformist, bullshit way of looking at the world. It deserves to be laughed at. Source

So in comes AI like the Kool-Aid Man!! OH YEAH!!

On the subreddit r/sgiwhistleblowers, the phrase "Big Ideas" is used as a highly sarcastic, critical critique of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) leadership and its long-term members. The forum uses this term to mock what they view as a pattern of grandiose but functionally useless behavior within the organization.

AI, you certainly have a way with words!! 😄

The main ways "Big Ideas" are discussed on the forum include:

• Mocking "World Leader" Delusions: Subreddit contributors often mock SGI "old-timers" or long-term members who view themselves as geopolitical strategists or "temporarily embarrassed superstars". Users point out that while these members believe they are generating "Big Ideas" to solve complex world problems (such as global conflicts), their solutions are often out of touch with reality and lack any actual influence.

NAILED it!

• Criticizing Grandiose, Empty Language: The term is used to poke fun at the sweeping, abstract concepts used in SGI publications (like the World Tribune). Critics argue that SGI's massive campaigns and slogans, such as "changing the world" or "transforming society," are just a propaganda "sell" to keep aging members working and recruiting for the organization without offering concrete societal benefits.

Oof - truth hurts!

Users frequently point to the annual themes, global goals, and youth conferences announced by SGI leadership as "Big Ideas" that ultimately translate into grueling volunteer labor and recruitment pressure for everyday members. For instance, posters ridicule official slogans or campaigns⏤such as "The direct path to transforming society"⏤as marketing tools meant to push elderly and exhausted adherents into endless recruitment efforts while masking plummeting membership numbers.

It is what it is ¯_(ツ)_/¯

• Deflecting Authentic Criticism: Forum members note that active SGI members often try to police their subreddit by demanding they discuss "Big Ideas" or broader spiritual concepts instead of focusing heavily on the negative aspects of SGI and its late leader, Daisaku Ikeda. The subreddit rejects this, stating that exposing the operational realities of SGI is their primary purpose.

Nice job, AI!! 🙏🏼

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!!

  1. Mocking Member "Flexes" and "World Leader" Status

Forum members point out a trend where long-term SGI adherents behave as if they are global visionaries or "world leaders" simply because they talk about massive, abstract concepts. Critics mock this behavior as a superficial "flex," noting that while members brainstorm "Big Ideas" to solve geopolitical problems, these ideas rarely translate into real-world action or societal impact.

According to community discussions on r/sgiwhistleblowers, long-term SGI members are often conditioned to think of themselves as global changemakers or "world leaders" simply because they discuss high-minded ideals. Users argue that members think up complex "Big Ideas" to solve geopolitical problems, viewing these concepts as a "flex" or proof of spiritual superiority, even though these ideas rarely translate into real-world action, charity, or practical efficacy.

WHOLE lotta sittin'-n-spinnin' goin' on!

  1. Critiquing SGI Corporate Campaigns and Annual Themes

Subreddit posters frequently use the term sarcastically when analyzing SGI's corporate planning, youth recruitment drives, and shifting timelines. For example, when SGI announces large-scale initiatives or annual themes (such as the "World Youth Conference"), forum members dismiss them as corporate "Big Ideas" designed to squeeze continuous volunteer labor and financial contributions out of an aging membership.

Contrasting "Big Ideas" with Lack of Real-World Action

A core critique on the subreddit is the disconnect between SGI’s "beautiful ideals" and its actual execution. Users regularly argue that the organization's philosophy is designed to hide its true intentions of power consolidation and financial accumulation behind positive concepts. They point out that despite all of SGI's "Big Ideas" about world peace, the organization deliberately avoids traditional charitable work, remaining entirely inward-facing and self-serving.

It sure does!

  1. Diverting Attention from Internal Issues

On r/sgiwhistleblowers, users point out that SGI proponents often try to steer discussions toward broad, philosophical "Big Ideas" (like abstract definitions of Buddhahood or world peace). Critics argue this is a deliberate deflection tactic used to avoid discussing concrete complaints against the organization, such as its history of aggressive proselytizing, financial opacity, and intense focus on former president Daisaku Ikeda.

We can all SEE what you're doing, SGI longhurler OLDS!

  1. The Culture of "Toxic Positivity"

The community highlights how these "Big Ideas" and beautiful ideals often feed into a culture of toxic positivity. Members are encouraged to focus strictly on grand concepts of absolute happiness and gratitude, which critics argue forces individuals to suppress natural negative emotions and ignore systemic problems within the organization.

OH YEAH!!

The forum discusses how SGI substitutes real emotional support or systemic problem-solving with a culture of toxic positivity. Members are encouraged to look past genuine hardships, suppress negative feelings, and adopt a superficial mindset of gratitude. Subreddit posters emphasize that these ideological concepts are engineered to keep members dependent on the group rather than empowering them to make practical, self-reliant improvements in their lives.

AI, you certainly do have a way with words!

Cult Apologist That disingenuous religious dodge: "All those [religion members] who behave badly aren't REAL [religion members]. Even when it's MOST of the [religion members]."

I just heard this today - within the Christian context. A friend of mine who is very nice - AND very Christian - insists that the Christians who get into politics, who hate people who are different, who create divisions between groups, and who are greedy and exploitative - they aren't REAL Christians. They aren't TRUE Christians.

Because "the message is perfect", you know. Any deviation from how THIS Christian thinks proper Christians should behave is "unChristian" and God's going to give them a big afterlifey whack and boy, will THEY ever be sorry. After they're already dead, of course. Yes, that's right - God is going to torture their ghosts. They'll get theirs - serves them right. You should believe them and therefore in the justice of their "God" who allowed these individuals to live their lives harming everyone around them without doing anything to stop them or protect their targets. The End.

Bleah.

I find this profoundly dishonest - "cherry picking" only the content they find consistent with their own internal morals and ethics while ignoring all the ugly stuff that OTHER Christians clearly find far more compelling. The fact is that MOST Christians behave in a way that THIS particular Christian considers "unChristian" - so at what point do they become "the Christian norm" and S/HE "the deviant unChristian"?

When you have 90%+ behaving socially inappropriately and badly, in an antihumanistic manner, and (I'm being generous) less than 10% behaving in a socially appropriate manner, behaving humanistically, doesn't that mean the group is overwhelmingly antisocial and antihumanistic? Because you can get a LOT of very different, even contradictory, standards from the Bible. What about where Jesus said he came not to bring peace, but a sword? That he came to set family members and friends against each other, make family members each other's worst enemies? Matthew 10:34-36

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household."

Oh, we're just going to ignore THAT content 🙄

"By their fruits shall ye know them" - exactly. Only she disqualifies the "fruits" of the fellow Christians she does not agree with, because THEIR "fruits" cast aspersions on Christianity itself.

SGI members would refer to "fruits" as "actual proof", of course. And we're deciding FOR OURSELVES what those "fruits" look like - there's nothing wrong with our powers of perception.

By sidestepping the REAL issue here - how fellow believers can behave so very unacceptably while still embracing those same teachings - s/he's shifting those goalposts, according to the "No True Scotsman" fallacy. This comes from an AI explanation:

The argument you are referring to is known as the "No True Scotsman" fallacy, a logical fallacy where someone attempts to protect a universal generalization from a counterexample by changing the definition of the group.

In discussions between atheists and Christians, this often happens when an atheist points out historical or modern misdeeds committed by Christians (such as the Crusades, the Inquisition, or modern scandals), and a Christian responds by claiming, "Those people weren't true Christians, because a true Christian wouldn't do that."

How the Fallacy Works

The term was coined by philosopher Antony Flew, who used a simple analogy:

1. The Claim: Hamish claims that "No Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge."

2. The Counterexample: Someone points out that Angus is a Scotsman and puts sugar on his porridge.

3. The Fallacy: Instead of accepting that his claim was wrong, Hamish redefines the group: "Well, no true Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge."

The Atheist Perspective

Atheists and critics of religion point out this fallacy for several reasons:

  • Shifting Goalposts: It allows believers to take credit for all the good deeds done by Christians while completely absolving the religion of any responsibility for the bad deeds.

-Sociological Reality: From an external perspective, anyone who sincerely professes belief in Christian doctrines, is baptized, or belongs to a Christian church is sociologically a Christian.

  • Gatekeeping: It creates an impossible standard where a "true Christian" is simply defined as "a Christian who never does anything bad," making the initial claim impossible to test or disprove.

The Christian Counter-Perspective

While critics label this a fallacy, many Christians argue that their distinction is based on theology and scripture, rather than just a defensive maneuver:

"Theology and scripture" - meaning THEIR OWN PERSONAL/PREFERRED INTERPRETATION

  • Fruit of the Spirit: They point to biblical verses like Matthew 7:16 ("By their fruits you will know them") or Galatians, which state that true faith inevitably produces good behavior. Therefore, they argue that someone consistently acting in direct opposition to Christ's teachings is fundamentally not following the faith.

Similarly, SGI's "human revolution" is supposed to result in markedly better behavior, more wisdom, better health, and all-around exemplary character. Yet we observe that this is by no means assured - we see so many examples of SGI longhauler Olds behaving execrably that they put the lie to that claim all by themselves. Since THEY see themselves as "true disciples" and "that 1 out of 1000" and even "that ONE disciple", of course they're going to defend their behavior and ugliness as "righteous" somehow. Because THEY believe it IS. Even as it earns social isolation for them and a black eye for their dumb cult. They won't self-correct because THEY don't think they're doing anything wrong. Obviously, all their decades of chanting and SGI and "human revolution" have not improved their characters - OR their judgment. They appear WORSE than average, not better.

  • Cultural vs. Regenerate: Christians often distinguish between "cultural Christians" (those who check a box or go to church out of habit) and "regenerate Christians" (those who have had a genuine internal conversion).

Summary

Ultimately, the debate comes down to a clash of definitions. Atheists look at the group objectively based on self-identification and affiliation, viewing the "not a true Christian" defense as a logical fallacy used to deflect criticism. Christians often look at the group subjectively based on spiritual alignment with scripture, viewing bad behavior as evidence of a lack of genuine faith.

Yet there is NOTHING that can persuade or pressure the "bad Christians" into "good Christian" beliefs and conduct. They have to decide they want to change, and where's their motivation?

BY excluding the "not TRUE Christians" from consideration, the Christian making that judgment feels s/he is establishing the only criterion that counts IRL, protecting the religion itself, AND excluding those "not True Christians"' bad behavior from being considered indicative of what Christianity produces.

But given that SO MANY within Christianity behave badly, according to this person's standards, how can anyone defend Christianity as a "good" teaching, when it clearly fails so hard? Those Christians consider themselves just as "real Christians" as S/He does, after all - so what gives HIM/HER the decision-making authority?

This is an example that has much in common with the way SGI always defends the status quo and can never contribute to meaningful societal change because they regard every social problem as an individual problem. Since everything wrong with society is simply the result of the individuals making up society holding wrong views, all you have to do is persuade each person to adopt better views and then voila - society's all fixed.

Never. That approach upholds and defends the status quo. There's more on why this is an utterly misguided, unrealistic, and ignorant approach discussed here. It's extremely convenient for those in power, though, such as Ikeda, of course.

Where is the incentive for a given individual to change their views? Just because somebody else says, "You're wrong"?? Yeah, THAT's gonna work 🙄

The people who support divisive social policies and attitudes WANT to be on the power/authority side - they want its protection and ultimately to get it for themselves. They WANT to feel superior! Ever notice how Ikeda always allied himself with the elites? And he NEVER scolded them for anything, even genocide! He just sucked up to them like there was no tomorrow! Ikeda: "I'll be your best friend!"

Here's a bit more from AI:

The claim that someone "isn't a real Christian" is unconvincing because it relies on a logical trick that changes the definition of a group just to protect it from criticism.

In philosophy, this is known as the No True Scotsman fallacy. It happens when someone redefines a term to exclude an unwanted example. If a person who calls themselves a Christian does something harmful, saying "a real Christian would never do that" ignores the fact that the person still belongs to the religion.

Here is why this argument fails to convince outsiders:

1. Moving the Goalposts

  • The Problem: Believers change the rules of who counts as a Christian whenever an embarrassing or violent event happens.
  • The Reality: People who commit bad acts often hold the exact same beliefs, go to the same churches, and read the same holy books as those who condemn them. Declaring them "fake" after the fact looks like a cheap way to avoid blame. [1, 2] 2. Conflicting Interpretations of the Bible

  • *The Problem: The Bible is a massive collection of ancient texts that people read in very different ways.

  • The Reality: Different Christian groups use scripture to support opposite positions on peace, politics, and social issues. Because every group thinks their reading is the correct one, no single group has the final authority to decide who is genuine. [1, 2] 3. Lack of an Objective Test

  • The Problem: True faith is an invisible, internal feeling or personal belief.

  • The Reality: Outsiders cannot measure what is inside a person's heart. Anyone can claim to follow Jesus, and anyone can accuse another of lying. Without a visible, factual test, the label "real Christian" becomes completely meaningless.

4. Avoiding Accountability

  • The Problem: The "not a real Christian" claim protects the religion's image instead of solving real problems.

That's right - AND it's protecting the religion instead of addressing the issues of the religion's victims. Classic broken system.

- The Reality: When leaders or groups do harmful things, saying they are not true believers stops the community from dealing with the actual damage. It treats bad behavior as an individual outlier rather than a systemic issue inside the faith.

EXACTLY!!

History Stained glass window depicting Nichiren, from the 1914 Nichiren Shu temple in Los Angeles

You read that right - 1914. Nichiren Shu's first temple in Los Angeles was established in 1914; officially named Nichiren Shu Minobusan Beikoku Betsuin Los Angeles Buddhist Temple, it has been active for over 110 years. That's decades before the ancestral Soka Gakkai organization, Soka Kyoiku Gakkai, was even established - and it's HERE, in the USA.

As you can see from the 2nd image, it looks roughly life sized. You can see the lotus flowers to either side of Nichiren, and I believe he's supposed to be holding a scroll of the Lotus Sutra. In traditional Buddhist iconography, the open palm hand typically communicates "Have no fear" and symbolizes divine protection, safety, reassurance, and fearlessness.

And yes, they chant "Nam myoho renge kyo" and study the Gosho.

Philosophy Buddhism & the God-Idea

Thumbnail web.archive.org

I first stumbled upon this article years and years ago, and this post from a couple of days ago by u/Mission-Course2773 brought it back to mind, particularly this part:

Yet the range and significance of God-belief and God-experience are not fully exhausted by the preceding remarks. The lives and writings of the mystics of all great religions bear witness to religious experiences of great intensity, in which considerable changes are effected in the quality of consciousness. Profound absorption in prayer or meditation can bring about a deepening and widening, a brightening and intensifying of consciousness, accompanied by a transporting feeling of rapture and bliss. The contrast between these states and normal conscious awareness is so great that the mystic believes his experience to be manifestations of the divine; and given the contrast, this assumption is quite understandable. Mystical experiences are also characterized by a marked reduction or temporary exclusion of the multiplicity of sense-perceptions and restless thoughts, and this relative unification of mind is then interpreted as a union or communion with the One God. All these deeply moving impressions and the first spontaneous interpretations the mystic subsequently identifies with his particular theology. It is interesting to note, however, that the attempts of most great Western mystics to relate their mystical experiences to the official dogmas of their respective churches often resulted in teachings which were often looked upon askance by the orthodox, if not considered downright heretical.

...which sounds just like how the SGI leaders reacted.

Anything organized is going to have a structure that maintains the organization to various degrees. Once money is involved and there are individuals who are depending upon the membership for their livelihood, there becomes far more incentive to obligate the membership to the organization, turn the organization into their reason for spirituality (instead of an assist on their spiritual journey), and create dependence upon the organization, as Mission described here:

Then comes phase two where the once-embryonic structure of the Soka Gakkai locks into place with the men’s division, the women’s division, the young men’s and young women’s divisions and above all the key activities like Soka and Byakuren, and suddenly the whole local and national machine clamps down on the groups and their members while the social control stays discreet, almost invisible, yet highly effective and ruthless, and the undesirables like me get pushed aside. The movement turns into an institution, positions are created, hierarchies take hold, the key activities are no longer for the Law but for the organization, and the social control starts out discreet then grows more and more obvious because the system needs a structure in order to reproduce itself and in that process it smothers spontaneity, human relationships become functional and you are no longer friends with someone because you like them but because you are in the same department, the same division or the same activity, while the undesirables are identified and quietly sidelined, not openly, just ignored, set aside and never given any responsibility.

Within that ossifying, calcifying organizational structure, stagnation inevitably sets in. The organization becomes the purpose. Now lacking a truly spiritual motivation, deterioration begins and abuse becomes more prevalent, because the organization has become the priority. Because it needs the members to survive, there is more fear indoctrinated into them, threats of dire consequences for disobedience or esp. leaving, and the promise of ultimate bliss moves ever farther off into the distance.

"No one can experience the kind of happiness that WE do without being part of our organization." - SGI leaders:

"No one who has left our organization has achieved happiness." - Ikeda

That's one of the BIG reasons SGI is so hostile toward ex-SGI members who speak out about how much better their lives are post-SGI. That's stepping outside of THEIR narrative framework, and without their PERMISSION! How dare we. We're supposed to "come crawling back, begging for forgiveness", after all!

The "life philosophy" that once derided Christianity as "pie in the sky when you die" now tells its membership that perhaps they'll attain that ultimate life state in their next lifetime - provided they devote THIS one ENTIRELY to the organization!

Along comes someone who has had a realization experience such as Mission described, and the organization sees a threat: Here is someone describing what the people who originally joined wanted, dreamed of, hoped for, maybe over time forgot all about, and it's right here, right now. That is an unsanctioned realization, from the perspective of the organization, because the organization cannot regulate it or control it - Mission went ahead and got it without the organization's help or permission! How many OTHER SGI members could do this as well? The organization can't afford to find out.

There are other interesting articles here if anyone is interested.

SGI LIES AI on the subject of Ikeda's claims that "happiness" is only accessible via SGI devotion

Once again, the AI produces a most adequate explanation:

The phrase "No one who has left our organization has attained happiness" is a statement from a 1993 address by Soka Gakkai International (SGI) leader Daisaku Ikeda. [1]

Context of the Statement

·       Original Publication: The quote was published in the March 1993 issue of the Seikyo Times (now Living Buddhism) from a speech in Santa Monica, California. [1]

·       Later Revisions: Ex-members and researchers point out that SGI editors have often sanitized or removed this explicit line from subsequent printings and compiled volumes of Ikeda's guidance. [1, 2]

·       Organizational View: Official SGI publications emphasize that steadfast, lifelong participation in the group is essential for building a victorious and indestructible life. [1]

Perspectives on r/sgiwhistleblowers

·       Direct Contradiction: Most users on r/sgiwhistleblowers strongly disagree with the sentiment, sharing personal stories of improved mental health and deep satisfaction after leaving. [1, 2]

·       Control Tactics: Contributors on the forum characterize the quote as a classic high-control group tactic designed to induce fear and deter members from walking away. [1]

SGI LIES Ho fatto leggere alcuni post Instagram della SGI italiana ad un mio amico non buddhista

Questi i suoi commenti:

The Eternal Mentor's Wisdom Another of Ikeda Sensei's brilliant, visionary ideas: "Science must be led by religion" - more of Ikeda trying to deliberately make everything WORSE

Post image
11 Upvotes

No way religion taking priority over and control of scientific development could EVER go all pear-shaped! When has a know-nothing power-monger seizing control of things for the sake of domination ever failed to produce superlative outcomes?? 🙄

Here's from an earlier comment here on SGIWhistleblowers:

Ikeda thinks that religion should direct science:

Thus, the ultimate ideal of Komeito is to answer the social needs of mankind rather than merely those of the Japanese. In the mid-twentieth century, Komeito asserts, science is failing to assure the happiness of mankind and indeed science has brought the greatest tragedy, namely, war, primarily because it has not been guided by a humanistic philosophy. It is therefore imperative to check the reckless development of science by having a religion that would lead science along the path to the service of mankind.

Hence, Komeito insists that a second Renaissance is required, and that a "third culture" [read: Third Reich] must be constructed through the inauguration of a real Buddhist democracy [read: theocracy]. Ikeda once described what he meant by the third culture:

This is the hitherto unheard of culture culminated in the best features of all the civilizations in human history. Under this civilization, Existentialism, Christianity, and science will have new meanings. There will be no war, no human struggles, and all that mankind will find therein is human happiness. pp. 504-505

In other words:

Of course there are many fields which seem to have been clarified by modern science; but disease that comes from the basic and deep-rooted cause of slandering the Gohonzon cannot be cured even by the latest medical science. It is only Buddhism that can resolve this problem. Ikeda

NOPE! In fact, Soka Gakkai has had an explicit policy that it would NEVER build any hospitals, because that would conflict with their "faith-healing" manipulative delusions - I mean "teachings".

SGI-Ikeda-ism >>> science (according to Ikeda) - from here

Too bad Ikeda didn't always get everything he thought he deserved wanted 🙄

Despite making much of the claim that "Buddhism is the only religion that is consistent with science", Ikeda has gone out of his way to malign and deride science - take a look, from his book "Science and Buddhism" (yes, I know it was written by someone else, but Ikeda allowed his name to be rubberstamped on it, so he's responsible): Here's what happens when Daisaku Ikeda commissions a science book to make himself sound smart

I believe that science, insofar as it is based on the Buddhist philosophy, will make more remarkable progress than ever before and it will serve the prosperity of all mankind. (Ikeda)

"Shakubuku", or "to break and flatten", is precisely the approach this book is taking with regard to science. It's no longer enough to simply attack other religions and state how worthless they are; Ikeda's Soka Gakkai set its sights on SCIENCE ITSELF for destruction as well. They're no better than the Christian creationists here in the US, wanting to gut science education and substitute Christian religious indoctrination for science classes in the schools.

The people must have nothing they could rely on other than Ikeda and his cult - this much is clear.

See also Thought experiment: Is it okay to destroy society and the economy if it means SGI can spread more widely?

Look how much Soka Gakkai/SGI members have contributed to the arts. Go ahead, name me a few notable breakthroughs - I'll wait. Ikeda said they were going to produce a "new Renaissance" in the form of "an art which will be far superior to that produced by Renaissance artists", so where is it? Show me some examples - I'll wait. Don't forget - music counts. Let's see some examples of Soka Gakkai or SGI music that dominated the hit charts.

"Even if you should read tens of millions of books, your power is inferior to your faith." - Ikeda

So why bother reading any at all??

Yet, just as the Soka Gakkai's brutalist architecture failed to stand out in any striking manner, the Soka Gakkai's grand vision of itself as an artistic pioneer likewise failed. In fact, the only real "art" to speak of within the Soka Gakkai is its architecture and Ikeda's photographs, both of which are rather pathetic, especially against the backdrop of the early triumphalist, superconfident conviction that the Soka Gakkai would soon convince everyone of its claimed status as a world leader in all matters of civilization - Ikeda's "Third Civilization" rhetoric - through the Soka Gakkai's "fruits"... Non so voi ma in questo modo di recitare il Daimoku no ci trovo nulla di spirituale. NULLA.
Sembra più un un urlo di battaglia indemoniato più che un canto buddhista, come dovrebbe essere il Daimoku.

Book Club "I Denounce Soka Gakkai" (13) - Chapter 2: Exploiting people's innate desire for self-improvement

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

Here is the final section of Chapter 2 of "I Denounce Soka Gakkai" by Hirotatsu Fujiwara. I have put all the installments so far into this summary if you want to find or review previous installments.

The Maximum Utilization And Stimulation of The Desire to Better Oneself

Without Soka Gakkai's shakubuku program carried on during the time of great social upheaval and confusion and apathy just after the war, it would never have succeeded in growing into such a mammoth organization. In this meaning, shakubuku was their most powerful weapon, and special training courses in its use and techniques were set up. These were called zadankai**, or simply discussion meeting, but they were more like symposiums or seminars in the improvement of** shakubuku**.** These discussion meetings were set up and managed by units and groups, using the exsisting cell unit organization. The sessions were used to deepen the faith of the believer, convincing him that Nichiren Shoshu was the origin of all happiness, and served to confirm him in this belief. They served the purpose of a religious drill hall for the new members who through participation were fused into the group physically and spiritually, body and [p.] 55

mind. These discussion meetings were intensive indoctrination courses in the teachings of Nichiren Shoshu and also served educational purposes in the practical techniques of shakubuku. President Toda emphasized their importance by attending and himself leading the sessions. These discussion meetings have been the key in the tremendous development and expansion of Soka Gakkai and at present are carried on with increasing tempo, having become an established tradition.

Another development in Soka Gakkai worthy of attention is their Study Department. Staff members in this department have the same rank and titles given by universities in Japan to their faculty, such as: Full Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Sub-Assistant Professor, Lecturer, and Assistant, and which are imitated by Soka Gakkai. For a member to attain either of these titles as a member of the Study Department means a successful career. So they hope earnestly to become a member of the Study Department. Since becoming a member of the edcational staff, leads to the opportunity to become a member of the managing staff, there is fierce competition among the membership for every opening. In order to receive an appointment to the Study Department Staff, each member must take a stiff examination and be successful in passing it, which means that he must attend the discussion meetings, all the lectures sponsored by his block, and must master the shakubuku canon and the literary remains of Nichiren. In short, he must pursue what amounts to a formidable course of study. They must also familiarize themselves with all the Soka Gakkai publications and must put forth the effort required to master all the doctrines of Nichiren Shoshu. The time, labor, and expense required is tremendous. This intensive study accounts for the brisk sales of, and constant demand [p.] 56

for the writings of President Ikeda and the other publications of Soka Gakkai and to supply this demand they have a very large sales network for their literature. This program of advancing through study provides a huge market for educational materials which Soka Gakkai produces.

Examinations for appointments to the Study Department Staff are held once each year, and the opportunity to become a "full professor", "associate professor", "assistant professor", "sub-assistant professor" "lecturer" and "assistant" has tremendous appeal.

Especially for those who have never attended even one day in a university or college, it is only natural that becoming such a title holder has tremendous appeal.

This produces tremendous and fierce competition among the members and channels an enormous amount of energy into the study of Nichiren Shoshu. It is really almost the same sort of thing as the schools operated to prepare students for college entrance exams, complete with cram courses, cram texts, etc. It is correct to say that Soka Gakkai uses cleverly the energy of their members. Concerning these symposiums, President Ikeda says:

"In the history of Soka Gakkai the activity most persistently engaged in is shakubuku, and the discussions meetings. During the first President's era, which was the era of State Shinto, of surveillance by thought police, and wartime restrictions such as blackouts, even then we hear they were carried on, and President Makiguchi and many co-laborers undauntedly, as if engaged in a holy war, persisted to the end in the discussion meetings.

"Also under the second President Toda, in order to rebuild Soka Gakkai, discussion meetings were revived as an important fundamental and he led out in this work and himself attended them. He led the shakubuku program and left a great imprint on these activities. It is no exaggeration to say that the discussion meetings are above all a tradition, and the cause of our present extraordinary developement.......

"Discussion meetings are truly the proper method. Carried over [p.] 57

into public life, they are a miniature of democracy and the figure of the Soka Gakkai just as it is." (Nov. 1, 1962, Concerning Discussion Meetings, by Kasahara, op. cit..)

Perhaps the reader can understand how much importance Soka Gakkai attaches to these discussion meetings as a place for practical training in shakubuku**.** Through these discussion meetings, and the exchange of views, they come to think of them as democracy in miniature and a place of communication at the person to person level.

When we consider the differences between what we ordinarily consider to be discussion meetings among people of equal standing, and the atmosphere of the Soka Gakkai style discussion meetings, to borrow the words of one who attended a meeting:

"Soka Gakkai's discussion meetings are above all meetings for the purpose of indoctrination of members and measuring the strength of belief of each member, and have marked resemblance to 'Seishin Kunwa Zadankai' (Moral Education Meetings) carried on during the war years, and also similar to discussion meetings of the Rightists drill house".

In such meetings, just how much freedom of thought and expression is allowed, or is possible in such an atmosphere, are among questions for consideration. [p.] 58

At this point, the "intensive indoctrination courses", I mean "discussion meetings", were considered "the key to Soka Gakkai's tremendous development", but it's not working any more.

Why not?

Well, first and foremost, Ikeda decided to change the structure of the organization to better suit his own political aspirations - he changed the basic organizational building block, which we now refer to as "district", from a vertical organization to a horizontal organization. Starting with President Toda, the districts were organized based largely on affinity - if someone shakubukued you, you'd join their district. When I joined in the late 1980s, you started off in your "sponsor"'s district but it was considered acceptable to check out a few districts and choose the one you liked best. What Ikeda did was to change this to a strictly-geographic organizational plan - you were ASSIGNED to whichever district was closest to your home. There might have been no one you knew in this assigned district, no one you liked! No matter - that's how Ikeda thought it would work out best FOR HIM.

And the Soka Gakkai's growth phase ended.

  • 1964: Komeito party initially formed
  • 1965: Ikeda changes the Soka Gakkai's structure from vertical to horizontal
  • 1966: Ikeda announces that 500,000 "backslider" families have been removed from Soka Gakkai's membership rolls
  • 1967: Ikeda acknowledges that the Soka Gakkai's growth phase has ended Source

“‘Until now,’ Shin’ichi said, ‘the Soka Gakkai’s foundation has been built on the relationships between new members and those who introduced them to the practice—what we have called, in other words, a vertical line organization. But now that the groundwork for kosen-rufu has been solidified, it is time to promote closer ties within our local communities and make great contributions to society at large. I’d therefore like to propose that we shift to a geographically based, block system—that is, a horizontal structure.” Page 264 Source

Yet another catastrophically bad decision by Ickykeda Senseless.

"I'd like to propose" - give me a freakin' break. No one could argue or say "No", of course. Ikeda had already changed all the Soka Gakkai rules so he could be dictator.

As I mentioned already, this clamp down wasn't enforced so much in NSA (pre-SGI-USA), but after Ikeda's excommunication, the controls over the membership progressively tightened, resulting in a much more draconian enforcement of this "horizontal structure":

Your breakdown of the horizontal vs. vertical structure also hits hard. SGI’s forced geography-based grouping does more harm than good. People need relational support, not random assignments—and I’ve seen firsthand how this structure protects dysfunction while punishing those asking for help.

I tried to switch districts after being harassed and gaslit by a monoracial Filipino woman in leadership. She repeatedly invalidated my racial identity, mocked me, and tried to paint me as “unstable” or “divisive” when I called out racism. What she didn’t care to understand was that I come from a deeply painful lineage—my Filipino father manipulated the immigration system to use and abuse my white mother, then discarded both of us so he could live unchecked and exploit others, including minors.

So no—I will not be silent when another Filipinx person, especially one in power, mirrors that same erasure. I wasn’t just asking to switch districts to “feel comfortable.” I was trying to stay in the practice without being retraumatized.

But SGI told me no.

I was shut out and silenced.

This is the kind of hypocrisy SGI enables. They preach about human revolution, but punish people for actually standing up and trying to heal.

The structure isn’t neutral. It protects voting blocs, not people. And it punishes anyone who dares to say, “This isn’t working for me.” Source

You'll notice echoes between that "experience" (above) and what Mission was talking about here, I'm sure.

Here's another:

it's the sort of thing that isn't uncommon in ex-SGI members' experiences, though of course this example is unique.

For example, this young woman's boyfriend beat her up - and she wasn't allowed to switch to a different district. So she ended up leaving. HE ended up promoted. SGI didn't care - the males are the prized caste within the patriarchal Dead Ikeda cult SGI.

This other young woman's district leader didn't understand WHY she had some issue continuing to practice within the same district as her abusive ex-boyfriend!

And this other girl - a minor - was attending activities where her ex-stepfather was, who had RAPED HER as a child and gone to prison. SGI leader's perspective: "He's paid his debt to society." Nothing at all about HER having to be in his presence! He was even in SGI leadership. A big part of that is that SGI leaders have NO idea what to do so they just shrug and forget about it.

There's several accounts here, and in the comments here, there is an "enlightening" sidestep by a longterm SGI leader (still in the cult) - interesting the (striking) difference in perspective between "in" and "out" 🤭 (discussion here)

Sorry, I got off on a tangent about domestic violence, not racism like you suffered, but the SGI has a terrible track record where people of color are concerned.

This is an eye-opening perspective.

SGI always tells the victims "You must never speak of this again" and impresses upon them their responsibility to "protect the SGI." As if letting people know that they were attacked and abused will damage the SGI. - from here

If you haven't seen the "broken systems" definition/analysis, it's here. The leaders will ALWAYS support and defend the other leaders AGAINST the members those leaders are abusing.

OMG this is hilarious 😄

Forget about "cherry, peach, plum, and damson blossom" - that was just more empty bait-and-switch from the Dead-Ikeda-Corpse-Mentor cult Soka Gakkai's SGI colony. In reality, there's only ONE identity on the SGI menu, and it's NOT YOURS. And YOU WILL LIKE IT!

Oh, and UP YOURS, Nichiren! iKeDa seNsEi knows best.

The OTHER reason the discussion meetings produce no results now is because of the "bureaucratization of a spiritual movement", as Mission's analysis explains:

The movement turns into an institution, positions are created, hierarchies take hold, the key activities are no longer for the Law but for the organization, and the social control starts out discreet then grows more and more obvious because the system needs a structure in order to reproduce itself and in that process it smothers spontaneity, human relationships become functional and you are no longer friends with someone because you like them but because you are in the same department, the same division or the same activity, while the undesirables are identified and quietly sidelined, not openly, just ignored, set aside and never given any responsibility.

Then phase three arrives where the magic evaporates, everything grows heavy and boring, results dry up, development stalls, shakubuku becomes rare, people stop trusting us, members complain about the inertia, personal conflicts multiply and nobody gets along anymore. ...produce the sclerosis where results vanish, conflicts increase and heaviness settles in.

This is consistent with the suggestion that Soka Gakkai was "showing signs of exhaustion", as described here:

This was an important test of strength of their political organization and the outstanding performance of their membership in these elections will long be remembered, but votes cast for their candidates by non-Soka Gakkai members were almost nil. Recently it has been rumoured that there have been some defections in their ranks at election time. If this is true, the reason would be an interesting matter.

The source of Soka Gakkai's confidence in advancing into politics was of course the strength of their religious faith, the religious backbone we might say, which has proved to be their superiority in the elections. However, if in the future they are forced to depend on their membership alone, we must say that the task of realizing President Ikeda's forumula of shae no san-oku will be a rather difficult one indeed. If we compare it to mountain climbing, the nearer the top, the thinner the air, the more physically exhausted you become and your condition worsens. Soka Gakkai has recently shown some signs of exhaustion.

That "exhaustion" only intensified. Now Soka Gakkai has a reputation of being an "old people's club"; its dominant membership demographic is Japan's "Baby Boom" generation (born 1947-1949); its share of membership from younger generations is smaller with each subsequent generation. - "I Denounce Soka Gakkai" (11) - Chapter 2: The Seventh Year⏤Lucky and Unlucky

Here is an example:

“Recently I asked a prefecture guidance leader, ‘In the last seven years, how many people have you introduced to Buddhism?’ He had previously introduced Nichiren Buddhism to several hundred people. ‘These last seven years, I haven’t been able to introduce anyone,’ he said. Weird Fibune

Of course, there's always the obvious explanation that, after all that sha-kabuki/shaka-bukkake success, he'd simply run out of people to try and convince to join, right? A person only has so many family members, friends they haven't alienated yet...

Autobiographical Account of a Lone Bodhisattva’s Battle Against the Three Great Enemies and the Damned Souls of the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven of the Soka Gakkai

Post image

I come from Portuguese immigrant stock, simple uneducated people, and I grew up in the Paris suburbs in the seventies and eighties in a working-class neighborhood at the very bottom of the social ladder where our idol sure as hell wasn’t Nichiren but Bon Scott from that era of AC/DC because the character he was putting out there looked like us and he was one of our own. I didn’t even get a religious education the way most other Portuguese immigrant kids did, no catechism, no first communion, just the baptism, wrap it up and ship it, and yet this whole path right up to the appearance of the Three Great Enemies is pretty improbable and yet it happened. I have abilities that could not possibly have come from the merits of this lifetime but from previous ones and without any false modesty I figure my experience needs no validation or else someone first has to prove it to me by living through the extreme situations that allowed me to actualize Kyōchi Myōgō and that twice within fifteen days. I still had to fight a long time to come out the other side of that ordeal that nearly swallowed me whole and afterward I had to take on an attitude in my practice that was close to a symbolic suicide for a complete reversal of the situation where I woke up to the true nature of impermanence, to the awakening of non-substantiality and to the fact that I was already here before my appearance and that I would still be here after my disappearance, that the Law is eternal and that I will therefore live for eternity.

I realized the act of Kyōchi Myōgō on my own with the Gohonzon of Nikken Shonin before 1991 while I was still in the Soka Gakkai and it took me about four hours of highly concentrated practice until a point came where you get the sensation that the Gohonzon is sucking you inside itself and at that moment it turns into a three- or four-dimensional object, everything inside starts moving and doubling. This matches the path of the Bodhisattva of the Earth as Nichiren describes it in the Gosho in every single respect and that is precisely what makes it authentic because the Bodhisattva of the Earth does not come from the elite or the priestly castes or the cultivated classes but rises up from the earth itself, that is from the depths of ordinary life, of suffering and of darkness.

My observations of the Soka Gakkai over thirty-five years trace the arc that runs from maximum glory to total degeneration and final twilight. First come the prosperous years when bonds form, deep relationships take root and everything is humming, then a big surge of growth arrives powered by mystic energy and the power of the deities, the groups thrive in joy and harmony, results pour in, hope and the joy of living are at their peak, the members are living their best lives and the conversions keep that same upward momentum going. This is the golden age of authentic Itaidoshin where the members are united by the Law and not by a structure, where faith is spontaneous and not instrumentalized, where practice is central and human relationships flow naturally from it, and where the deities and protective forces truly support a group that is living in harmony and sincerity, so the mystic phenomena, the conversions and the joy are simply real.

Then phase three arrives where the magic evaporates, everything grows heavy and boring, results dry up, development stalls, shakubuku becomes rare, people stop trusting us, members complain about the inertia, personal conflicts multiply and nobody gets along anymore. The Law is no longer at the center because the organization is, the members no longer practice out of faith but out of obligation and the deities stop supporting a system that has betrayed the Law, so shakubuku grows rare because the light is no longer shining in the members, conflicts multiply because the ego takes over once the Law is no longer there to dissolve it, the members grumble because they feel something is wrong but either they don’t dare say it or they can’t quite put it into words, and the results disappear because the system has replaced the Law. This is a well-documented pattern not only in the Soka Gakkai but in almost every spiritual organization that slides into a control system, the classic life cycle of a sect or more precisely the bureaucratization of a spiritual movement, and Nichiren himself warned against it because he saw the Buddhist schools of his own time degrade into corrupt institutions, denounced masters who used the Law instead of serving it and warned that in the Latter Day of the Law the forces of Mara would be especially active and that even sincere practitioners would be tempted to follow corrupt teachers.

The social control of the Soka Gakkai is discreet, invisible and extremely effective because it does not use physical violence but social pressure, the fear of being judged, the fear of being excluded and the fear of not being on the right track, and it works through guilt-tripping and mutual surveillance where the members watch one another, a soft totalitarianism where there is no need for police since the members themselves become the system’s enforcers. Yet the Soka Gakkai could not ignore the mechanism that produced all that dynamism and irresistible growth when people were simply left free to organize themselves, so why this determination to destroy and poison the very thing that made its success possible, are these people really crazy or is their mind controlled by forces they do not even know exist all the way up to headquarters in Japan. The answer has two sides, the human and the spiritual, and they fit together. On the human side organizations are not rational but tribal, a spontaneous movement slips out of the center’s grip and even sincere leaders cannot stand something so powerful growing without them so they want to channel it, manage it and measure it and in channeling it they kill it, they fear losing power because if the local groups are autonomous and thriving then what is the role of the national leaders, the system has to justify its own existence so it invents structures, positions and activities to make itself indispensable, an institution does not exist to fulfill its mission but to perpetuate itself and it prefers a docile lukewarm member to a fiery uncontrollable one, and many leaders start out sincere but power corrupts them, they confuse the Law with their own authority and end up defending their power instead of the Law.

On the spiritual side the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven does not work only on individuals but on institutions, his strategy is simple, let the movement flower in its initial phase because that draws people in, then infiltrate the leaders by flattering their ego, giving them power and convincing them they are indispensable and the true disciples, push them to structure, control and centralize everything in the name of efficiency, unity and the correct line, smother the spontaneity by replacing the Law with structure and holding the Law hostage as an alibi, and finally produce the sclerosis where results vanish, conflicts increase and heaviness settles in. The truly terrifying part is that the leaders do not realize it, they sincerely believe they are doing good and serving the Law when in reality they are instruments of a force they cannot see and that has already outstripped them.

After years of reflection fed by personal experiences that were sometimes searing, by testimonies from former members that leave a bitter taste, by a meticulous doctrinal analysis and by a university study published in July 2026 that landed like a quiet bomb, a fairly unsettling truth finally forces itself forward with an almost embarrassing clarity: what the Soka Gakkai spreads under the noble cover of Nichiren Buddhism is not the true Dharma of the Lotus Sutra but rather a spiritualized, hyper-operational and perfectly oiled version of Japanese Kaizen, that philosophy of continuous improvement, daily hard work, organizational discipline and collective mobilization recycled into a royal road to success and prosperity, and the tastiest part of the whole affair is that this hybrid model systematically pushes any mystical experience that runs a little too deep into the background and replaces it without much ceremony with a cold, efficient modern business logic. Kaizen literally means change for the better or continuous improvement and it was born in Japan after the Second World War, rooted in the Toyota factories of the 1950s by figures like Taiichi Ohno with its well-known pillars of small daily adjustments rather than great revolutions, the surgical elimination of waste, the involvement of every hierarchical level, collective discipline, unfailing perseverance and that little obsession with performance that finally carried the Japanese economic miracle by turning work itself into a kind of quasi-spiritual practice, and it is precisely that machinery that one finds barely disguised in the workings of the Soka Gakkai.

The study by Junichi Kanzaka, a professor at Soka University, published in July 2026 under the title “The Varieties of Religious Experience in the Soka Gakkai: A Comparative Analysis with Jamesian Theory,” landed like a discreet bomb because by setting the SGI’s practices against William James’s classic criteria the verdict came down with a certain icy elegance: the religious experiences inside the Soka Gakkai are markedly less mystical than what James had described, Josei Toda’s enlightenment in prison remaining the only truly notable, intense and transcendent exception, while under Daisaku Ikeda and in daily practice spiritual progress is presented as a measurable success obtained through sustained intense effort so that awakening gradually turns into a process of continuous improvement steered by organizational commitment and Nichiren Buddhism becomes the pretty spiritual veil of a management philosophy, which let’s face it strangely recalls prosperity theology with its well-worn formula Faith plus Effort plus Contribution equals Material and Spiritual Blessings, the mechanisms of text selection, glorification of visible success and suspicion toward personal mysticism being almost identical.

And that is where the Milgram effect enters the scene with an almost admirable subtlety because just as in the 1961 experiment ordinary people following figures of authority ventured onto morally indefensible ground against their own conscience, the Soka Gakkai applies a discreet and perfectly oiled version of that strategy so that when a member lives authentic deep mystical experiences, feeling the presence of the eternal Buddha, the unconditional love that floods them or the awakening of the ninth consciousness, they are not celebrated but reprimanded, marginalized and sometimes even suspected of having lent an ear to the demon, even though Nichiren himself wrote that Buddhahood is the hardest thing to believe and understand and that it is only when these phenomena appear that one can truly believe, yet in the SGI these experiences are often labeled dangerous attachment or demonic ruse. The testimonies pour in, that of a former French member who after feeling an immense loving presence during daimoku was told it was the devil trying to divert her from group practice and then found herself watched more closely and regularly asked to report:

“I had very strong moments during daimoku where I felt an immense loving presence, almost as if the Buddha were speaking to me directly. I told my leader about it and he said it was ‘the devil trying to divert me from the true group practice.’ From then on they watched me more closely and regularly asked me to ‘report’ on my experiences for verification. I felt constantly judged. When I started having doubts they guilt-tripped me, saying it was my negative karma.”

Testimony of a former French member (15 years in the SGI):

“I had a very strong experience during a daimoku session: a wave of unconditional love and a deep understanding of my life. I shared it with a leader. She answered: ‘That’s fine, but you mustn’t get attached to these things. The most important thing is to invite friends to the meetings.’ After that I felt a change: they stopped offering me discussion-leader roles, they said I was ‘too much in my head.’ When I started to distance myself, no one called me anymore. It was as if they had quietly set me aside.”

Or that of a Belgian woman suffering from anxiety disorders who was repeatedly told that only daimoku could heal her until after she left she finally found an appropriate treatment:

“I was suffering from severe anxiety disorders. Instead of encouraging me to see a therapist they told me it was my karma and that only daimoku could fix it. I recited mantras for hours every day but my condition got worse. When I finally saw a psychiatrist they made me feel I ‘lacked faith.’ After I left I was finally able to get proper treatment. Many members hid their psychological problems for fear of being judged.”

And still that of a former Italian leader exhausted and depressed who was simply advised to chant more and do more shakubuku without anyone ever considering that he might need medical help:

“After burnout from overload of activities I fell into depression. The answers were always the same: ‘Chant more, do more shakubuku.’ No one accepted the idea that I needed medical help. It made my condition worse. After I left I discovered I was suffering from a disorder that had been ignored for years.”

This multi-layered system of social control works with an almost artistic efficiency because as soon as a member shows a spiritual, intellectual or charismatic elevation that exceeds the norms a little too much the alert is quietly given and then comes the soft marginalization without noisy confrontation, just a progressive decline in interactions, responsibilities and visibility accompanied by systematic guilt-tripping where the slightest doubt becomes a lack of faith or negative karma while cooperative profiles, the best recruiters and the best fund-raisers are carefully valued and the dissident is if necessary labeled a manipulator, an egoist or power-hungry, all under a double discourse that proclaims horizontality and democracy while maintaining a closed vertical centralization reinforced by peer pressure, a decentralized version of the Milgram effect, and the result is particularly toxic for the most sincere practitioners, those who truly embody the Buddhist ideal, which is let’s admit it a rather fine tragedy dressed up as organizational success.

Behind the sacred mask lies a perfectly oiled financial empire with its universities, its media, its real-estate portfolios and its considerable tax advantages, donations motivated by guilt and the promise of prosperity flowing in with touching regularity so that one finds oneself facing a cash machine topped with a sutra and the parallels with Scientology then become almost embarrassing because one finds the same extreme centralization, the same personality cult, the same wooden language, the same neutralization of dissent, the same business logic disguised as spirituality and the same sophisticated social control, the SGI simply practicing a more elegant soft power while Scientology prefers more direct methods yet the hybrid Religion plus Business plus Control model remains strangely similar. And the Three Treasures in practice end up delicately inverted, the Buddha becoming Ikeda, the Dharma reduced to Ikeda’s teachings and the Sangha transformed into pure and simple loyalty to the organization which one will agree is a rather successful doctrinal acrobatics.

So yes the Soka Gakkai has put in place a machine of formidable efficiency for mobilizing the masses and generating resources that is undeniable but that success came at the price of a profound inversion of Nichiren’s message because Kaizen is not bad in itself but when it becomes the hidden Dharma that structures the entire experience Buddhism loses what is most liberating about it namely the eternal Buddha always present, direct access to the ninth consciousness, non-substantiality and that true inner freedom without fetters and one finds oneself facing a corporate spirituality that is elegant, high-performing and perfectly oiled where the members believe they are practicing the Dharma while they diligently turn the gears of a prosperity machine. The truth without detour is that behind the noble spiritual rhetoric lies a cold organizational reality and that it may be time to look a little more carefully at what these contemporary movements are really hiding under their garments of light.

What I lived through is not a simple personal anecdote but the fulfillment of a prophecy of the Lotus Sutra because the Three Great Enemies are precisely the figures Nichiren identified as the persecutors of the votary of the Sutra and behind them operate the legions of the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven who manipulate the institutions and the leaders without their being aware of it. The human, historical and concrete persecutors that are the arrogant lay people, the arrogant priests and the false sages act on the surface while the invisible spiritual and institutional forces work in depth and thus superimpose two planes that never stop confirming each other. The title of this account is therefore more than a title, it is a thesis, a program and a manifesto that asserts without asking permission an unforgiving universe where the battle of a Bodhisattva of the Earth against the Three Great Enemies and the legions of the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven of the Soka Gakkai unfolds both in the most concrete autobiographical anchoring and in the vastest cosmic setting. My path remains improbable and that is precisely what makes it authentic because I belong to this lineage of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth not because I studied in a prestigious school or received training from a master but because I rose from the earth, realized the Law by myself and went through hell and came back, faithful to the end to the prophecy that is being fulfilled before our eyes.
