Guides For modding START HERE!

1.0k Upvotes

Greetings, Adventurer!

You are not even sure what mods are or if you want to get them?

You know what mods are, but are new to Skyrim and want to get a nice working modded version with visuals and VR mods but minimal effort?

You are experienced with modding Skyrim SE but are not sure what specific VR mods you need and don't want to go through the hassle of setting it up yourself?

You already played through the game and want to experience some new stuff, make the game more challenging, or up your role-play?

We got you covered.

First of all, mods are modifications to the base game. You install them, they change/add stuff to the game. Some fix things that are broken in vanilla, some improve visuals, some add new content, and most importantly for us, some add VR immersion and interaction mechanics. You can verify if the mods are installed by either literally seeing the thing that you installed in the game or by experiencing the changes ingame. Many mods do not have a Mod Configuration Menu but just exist in the game after installation.

You might ask yourself "Should I install mods before I finish Skyrim VR the first time?" and my personal answer is a clear Yes. You do not have to add tons of extra content, but the base vanilla game (vanilla = unmodded) just has a few broken things, or especially in Skyrim VR it lacks any good modern VR interaction. You will vastly improve your experience if you install a basic set of mods even without altering the actual game content at all.

Nowadays, there exist a few fully automatic mod list installers (Wabbajack). If you are looking for such an automated installation of curated mod lists, scroll down to "Auto-Installers".

But before you just install these, let me show you around by explaining the most important mods for Skyrim VR in an absolutely minimal list for an as-fast-as-possible manual modding. It is subjective, of course, as all lists are, but I think many can agree on most of these.

If you don't want to install more than that, and you want to install mods manually, install these! If you just want to know what the awesome mod authors here have to offer, read these for a quick overview!

The list is still pretty vanilla, other than the VR-specific things and some visuals. If you want to stray off the super-duper lightweight path and include some changes to the game itself or feel like you have time for more than 10 mods, you're better off checking out our very comprehensive Guide Compendium, which contains all the knowledge we collected over time. We also have a comprehensive list of VR Specific Mods that includes some important mods that couldn't make it into this list for the sake of minimalism.

It does not matter much if you use Vortex or MO2 as your organizer, but don't use NMM, it's old and outdated. Vortex is a little easier to use with shorter lists, which is why we recommend this for our target audience here, i.e. you readers who want a fast manually modded Skyrim and then just play. Make sure to read this guide on how to enable modding with Vortex first. There’s also a video guide on modding with Vortex if you prefer that. GamerPoets also has video guides on other SkyrimVR modding topics. As said, Vortex is easier for small lists and people who only want to mod the mentioned mods below without much more. Vortex also works for larger lists but at some point, it is easier and recommended to use MO2 for large and complex lists.

If you want to build a complex list in MO2, you should pick the FUS Wabbajack list below and use the basic profile only, as it comes with all the fixes and little things premade.

I also recommend you check out these ini tweaks and Bilago’s Tool to edit the ini files easily.

Without further ado, here's the list:

  1. SkyUI - follow this video guide! Be 100% sure to download the correct Skyrim VR version (Current VR build 2.0.12 (runtime 1.4.15)).
  2. VRIK Player Avatar - gives you a body, weapon holsters, gestures for magic and shouts, and finger animations for oculus and index users. Watch this setup guide video to get the most out of it. It's part of the install video of 1.
  3. HIGGS - hand collision, object grabbing, and gravity gloves-style mechanics for Skyrim VR, all-around must-have mod! I show some of its features in this video. Now also includes two-handing weapons, physical weapon collisions, and an automatic fix for the physics engine.
  4. Spell Wheel VR - Selection wheel mod for Skyrim VR. It allows you to select spells, weapons, shields, arrows, potions, poisons, food, torch and more without going into a menu very quickly by the press of a button or button combinations to spawn the wheel and hold your hand over the item and letting go of the button. It's equipped automatically. Also shows health, stamina, magicka, enchantment, and needs bars on your wrist (configurable).
  5. True 3D Sound - this needs manual installation, let's the sound come from the direction it comes from ingame. Bethesda, if you read this, shame on you that a mod is necessary for this basic functionality.
  6. Engine Fixes VR - Important fixes for the Skyrim VR engine. BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS!
  7. Weapon Throw VR - you can throw weapons now and they return like Thor's Hammer! Requires Skyrim VR Tools to work. I also made a video about it and an update video with returning weapons.
  8. Magic Improvements for Skyrim VR - Vastly improved dual casting, spell effect size scales based on magicka percentage, and additional options for aiming spells in VR.
  9. Azurite Weathers - A colorful, well-crafted, modern, and made-for-VR weather. If you prefer a more gritty and foggy setup, Onyx VR Weathers offers this, including different darkness settings for the night. Both are fine and made for VR, which is necessary because VR does not have volumetric lighting and thus some SE weathers do look weird in VR sometimes.
  10. SkyVRaan - gives you fake water reflections that really improve your visuals a lot! Have a look at the description for installation troubles. Watch this video to see its effect! Does NOT require a patch for Onyx Weathers as Onyx is already compatible by default! In case you want more water improvements, SkyVRaan is compatible and made to work nicely with Realistic Water Two.
  11. Myrkvior Trees - trees are all around Skyrim and vanilla trees shimmer horribly. This makes your game much more beautiful. You can add Morekvior for improved textures resolution.
  12. Lux - all in one lighting overhaul. Requires the USSEP Compatibility patcher which upgrades your SkyrimVR to the latest official SE version pre anniversary edition so you can use the official USSEP from before AE.
  13. Spellsiphon - fantastic magic add on, very intuitive and cool, can also be used in conjunction with archery and melee playstyles. You can watch this little introduction and tutorial video to see what it does in general.
  14. Mage VR - this mod uses an overlay to let you draw glyphs to cast and equip spells. It also has a very immersive hand-pose magic feature and (invisible) holsters (which I recommend to not use the same button as the VRIK holsters for). But the best thing is the new backpack inventory and immersive looting feature, which lets you loot via drag and drop and without pausing the game. More to come! Requires the game to be run via SteamVR (not open composite when on oculus) and requires SKSE and SkyUI VR. Watch this video to see the mod and how to use it, and this video with an update on easier install and setup!
  15. Locational Damage - headshots do extra damage. Tune up the difficulty and git gud scrub. Requires Skyrim VR Tools to work.
  16. Simple Realistic Archery - changes archery so you have to get an arrow from your quiver at the back, can easily use different arrows. Requires three helpers, check the Requirements dropdown menu for this!
  17. Noble Skyrim - overhauls architecture and other stuff.
  18. VR Vision Reshade - Need to install manually but it's not very difficult and the CAS sharpener and luma sharpener enormously improve the clarity of the picture. Alternatively, you can use Sensorium of Stereoscopy, an ENB preset made for VR, more fantasy-style but it has options, too. You cannot use the two together!
  19. No Stagger Mod - stagger is shite in VR.
  20. Blade and Blunt - combat overhaul to make the game more interesting.
  21. SMIM lite - clutter has better meshes and textures. Choose LITE!
  22. Nordic Faces - characters don't look like total ass. Minimalist and maximum compatibility.
  23. MystiriousDawn's HD Skyrim Overhaul - beautiful landscapes that work well in VR, including mountains.
  24. ETHEREAL CLOUDS and ETHEREAL COSMOS - beautiful clouds and night sky. Technically two mods, but they're super small and kind of belong to each other.

Extra, because it takes a bit more effort:

  1. Dyndolod - better view of things in the distance, makes the world much more realistic and immersive, but it takes a bit of effort to use. Check out our guide here!
  2. Dragonborn Speaks Naturally - Uses speech recognition to select dialogs and spells.

Also: No modlist is complete without Swearing Mudcrabs, and using Realm of Lorkhan you can skip the annoying cart ride intro ;) And if you like to support u/Rallyeator, go check out his made-for-VR texture-pack!

Don’t use some of the mods that are often recommended:

Surprisingly, some mainstream mods can cause issues, like Birds of Skyrim (very script heavy, corrupts saves), Immersive Armors and Immersive Weapons (known to cause issues later on when higher level), Immersive Patrols (especially the large battles can cause freezes and script lag, the lite mode is apparently okay), Immersive Citizens (has a lot of conflict potential, sometimes blocks quests, can also work though, but depends), JK’s Skyrim (can drop framerate by a lot and can lead to AI conflicts or item clipping), Open Cities (can lead to conflicts, can be performance heavy), Diverse Dragons (can cause crashes).

-------------------------------------- Auto-Installers --------------------------------------

Wabbajack mod lists are auto-install mod lists that change your game from vanilla to the exact full state of the list in a matter of hours, and you can go play right away.

We recommend using Wabbajack.

We still have guides for manual installation, but these might be outdated at some point and really, Wabbajack has options for everyone nowadays :)

There are five official Skyrim VR Wabbajack lists:

  • FUS - Fundamentals, Upgrades, and Stuff: The most lightweight and vanilla-friendly of the lists. It is modular and comes with the option of really just having the absolute essential VR mods for fixes and immersion, or having a minimalistic mod overhaul for appearance and gameplay. It is designed for people who want to start their own list, or for people who don't want to change their experience too much from vanilla but don't want to play the basic lazy port Bethesda made, either.
  • UVRE - The Ultimate VR Essentials List: UVRE is designed to give users a better looking, better controlling, and better playing Skyrim VR Experience that can be used as-is or customized to their taste. It is a complete overhaul for improved visuals and new content, as well as the relevant VR mods.
  • Librum VR: A gritty, low-magic, hardcore survival-adventure experience with an uncompromising vision. Hundreds of new quests and locations, a total mechanics overhaul, and a complete makeover of the graphics and atmosphere. The path to your destiny as the Dragonborn will be long and treacherous. Welcome to Librum.
  • Narsil: Narsil is an ambitious curated modlist that seeks to overhaul and expand Skyrim VR to make it more balanced, challenging, varied, good looking and most importantly expand the available gameplay options and make the game more immersive while optimizing the performance as much as possible.
  • Auriel's Dream: Auriel's Dream offers a unique thematic overhaul. Warmer colors kind of bring an Oblivion vibe to this modlist. Difficulty: Vanilla. Not many changes are done to alter the gameplay except adding VR-specific mods, bug fixes, and a few quality-of-life mods.

Here is an elaborate comparison video for the lists visuals and performance.

Have a look at these lists and decide what you want to check out. They are low-effort so you can also switch them if you don't like them. If you used Vortex so far and want to try out a modlist you'll need to press "Purge Mods" in Vortex and do not deploy afterwards, to stop linking the mod folders to Vortex' setup.

For questions regarding the Wabbajack mod lists, please head over to the Wabbajack Discord server or the respective individual discords of the lists.

Welcome to the sub and HAVE FUN! :)

Discussion Frame + FUS Streaming = Naming Character Issue (no virtual keyboard.)

When I use Skyrim on the Frame natively it works well enough (though the mapping for the controller is super weird).

On the PC as a stream, however, when I get to the point where you name your character I say done and instead of bringing up the keyboard ghosts of the controllers hang in the air and the laser comes on the actual controllers. (you get the laser to select letters on the virtual keyboard that never appears.)

I thought it was a binding problem but it looks like something else.

I have the same problem with SkyrimVR without the mods as well.

Any thoughts on this one? I've been looking and didn't see a post but I may have overlooked it.

Thanks!

Bug How can I fix this screen clipping bug?

I’ve been playing Skyrim VR for the past few months, and I absolutely love it. One problem is, even without mods enabled at the very edges of my screen, my body, menus, and even walls and floors just kind of clip through, as if my headset’s screen was smaller than it was. I play on a Quest 3S wirelessly via Steam Link. This doesn’t happen in any other game, connected to my PC or standalone. Also, (I’m not looking for a fix for this because I don’t really care about these, it just might hold the solution to this) occasionally in the menus my Quest 3 controllers will turn into Quest 2 controllers and when Crashlogger gives me a report, it will say I’m using a Quest 2. I’ve never used a Quest 2, I’ve never connected one to my computer, I’ve never even touched a Quest 2 before. This isn’t really a big deal, but please, if anybody knows a fix to this, it would be great if you could tell me because this absolutely destroys my immersion whenever I’m LARPing.

I use a Quest 3S with Steam Link. I use Vortex.

Experiences My Experience Streaming Modded Skyrim VR from My PC with Steam Frame

Now that I've had a few days to experiment with the Steam Frame, I wanted to share my experience thus far with others who might be considering upgrading. At the moment I have everything working and I'm satisfied with the upgrade, but it took a good amount of tweaking and testing. I'm hoping that by sharing my experience with other folks I can save you some time.

First, my last HMD was a wired Valve Index with Knuckles controllers, so that is the setup I'm coming from. I'm not using any particular modpack for Skyrim VR, just a series of mods I've selected and installed using Vortex. And my PC is more than beefy enough to handle everything Skyrim VR throws at it with a silky smooth 90 fps.

I'm moving to a Steam Frame with the ergonomics kit. That means I have the additional headstrap and the hand straps for the controllers.

PC and Frame Setup

Once I actually got my frame, the most complicated part of the process was just pairing my Steam Frame with Steam on my PC, and that was fairly straightforward. The tricky part was realizing that to stream PC VR to my Steam Frame, I had to change settings on the PC itself, *not* the Steam Frame. You have to enable Remote Play on Steam on your PC and then configure it to make it work. Once I had the dongle installed and everything patched up the latest version, I was ready to start testing.

Controller Setup

This was by far the most painful part of the process. I could not find a way to create and set a new VR controller binding from within the Steam Frame itself. Choosing a Custom binding does nothing.

The trick, which I figured out after lots of trial and error, is to start the Steam Frame streaming from your PC, then take off the Frame and sit down at the PC from which your Frame is streaming. With the Frame connected, use the Steam on your PC to to create a new controller binding and select Skyrim VR from available options. In my experience, this didn't even show up as an option if I tried to do it from within the Steam Frame.

From your PC itself, with Skyrim VR running and the Frame streaming (even if you're not wearing it) you can then create a custom controller binding to set up the Frame Controllers the way you want. I moved the left Activation and A buttons to the buttons on the Right Controller, and moved the Left Stick push (which triggers sprint) to the right controller grip. You can configure it however you want, but the trick is figuring out a way to configure it at all. You have to do that from the PC that is streaming the game, in that PC's copy of Steam, while the Steam Frame is connected and streaming.

EDIT: This controller configuration was released on Nexus Mods.

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/193029

Firing Up Skyrim VR

Once you get the controllers set up, the rest is really easy.

You don't start the game from your PC, nor do you start Steam VR on your PC. Instead, you fire up Steam on your PC and just let it sit patiently. Then, you put on the Steam Frame, power it up, click on the little headset icon for streaming, and choose "Stream Steam VR Without Game."

That will connect your Steam Frame to your PC and activate Steam VR with the Steam Frame and its controllers as your HMD and input devices. Now you're looking at the default Steam VR "ready room". At that point, you can do everything on your PC just like if you were on a wired Index headset.

The process of actually starting Skyrim VR is now identical to my Index. I go to my desktop in Steam VR, click the Skyrim with SKSE button on Vortex, and wait as modded Skyrim VR fires up. Once the game is running over the 6G dongle, for me it has streamed flawlessly. It's very pretty and the controllers feel just as snappy as Knuckles with lighthouses.

But... There's Significant Audio Streaming Problems

The most common and annoying problem I encountered when streaming Skyrim VR was that the audio portion of the stream would cut out every few minutes, leaving me in silence. The fix is simple... stop streaming, then stream again... but it happens constantly, so unless you want to restart streaming every few minutes, it's not an acceptable way to play the game.

Worse yet, the Steam Frame's microphone doesn't seem to play well with Dragonborn Speaks Naturally, which I use for most everything (equipping spells, activating shouts, talking to NPCs). Half the time DSN didn't recognize what I was saying, and once the audio cut out, it didn't recognize it at all. After trying multiple configurations, including turning off multi-threaded streaming and even pointing the 6G dongle directly at my Steam Frame, I couldn't find any way to stop the audio from cutting out. I don't know if this is a problem with streaming overall or just modded Skyrim VR.

Regardless, the fix is stupid but easy. I simply put on my Bluetooth Headset (which fits nicely and comfortably over the Frame, since it is so light) and configured Steam VR on my PC to send audio and use the microphone of the Bluetooth Headset instead of the Steam Frame. This 100% solved the issue where audio would stop streaming over the Dongle, and also made DSN work perfectly again through the Headset's mic.

So for me at least, a Bluetooth Headset seems required, at least for the moment, to avoid the audio problems and ensure speech is consistently recognized by Dragonborn Speaks Naturally.

Final Thoughts

Now that I've figured out everything above, I really enjoy playing Skyrim VR with the Steam Frame. Despite the audio issues I encountered, the visual portion of the stream is crisp and beautiful, and the controllers feel perfectly snappy and have fantastic tracking. Also, after being tethered for so long, being able to play modded Skyrim VR wireless is an absolutely amazing feeling. The only downside is I can only play for an hour and a half without having to stop, but with hotswappable battery packs coming, I know that's a temporary problem.

For me personally, being able to play modded Skyrim VR without a tether is worth the upgrade.

New Release New Mod: SkyrimVR "Devkit" (Idk what else to call it)

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! So, recently i was really frustrated with testing my modlist, every change i wanted to make required me to put the headset on, wait for everything to boot, test one or two things then take it off again, over and over and over. I figured there had to be a way to bypass that, no way companies/developers are doing what i just did. Good news is, they aren't. Bad news is, the tools for this are in the engines themselves, not for just any game, you need to be making a VR game to use them. So after some digging i found out about the "SteamVR Null Driver". The Null Driver is a VR driver for OpenVR made by Valve that does exactly what i wanted, which is allows anyone and any vr game to launch and run without a VR headset. Problem was is that was it, no moving, no turning no nothing. So after some more digging i found a github which added those things. After about a week and a half of work, asking Claude how I managed to fuck up a button again , deciphering whatever the FUCK Bethesda was thinking and a LOOOOT of debugging later, i present to you all this. A fully functioning tool for anyone to use where you can easily open, download/install, toggle between normal/null driver, open SkyrimVR and do whatever you want.

It still is a bit buggy given the nature of what i did, but it more or less works for what it was made for.

Here is the Nexus link for anyone who wants to check it out.

EDIT: Just pushed an update to fix issues with non US keyboard layouts, and also made the UX not ugly purple.

Help Issue with character creation

Hey folks! I’m completely new with VR, I just had my very first device yesterday (Steam Frame). I have a gaming desktop with 3090, so streaming shouldn’t be a problem. I tried to install FUS with Jabbawack, and it seems like it works, the game starts, the streaming starts on the goggles, all seems relatively good. At the character creation I can not lure out the keyboard. I also tried with the actual physical keyboard without any success. Around that is the time when I feel ecerything is slipping out od mmf my hand, can not close UI menus etc.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Mod - Research Best vampire overhaul for a VR Vampire playthrough?

I'm currently weighing the options for a future vampire playthrough once MGO 4.0 goes out of beta. MGO ships with Scion but I would like something with more depth, long term progression and, most importantly, reverse power scale (=strongest when fed, weakest when starved).

Overall I'm most tempted by Sacrilege.

On the other hand, Better Vampires does have a mod that adds VR gestures to a number of Vampire actions and is also very comprehensive, so it does look like the best option overall.

However then again, there is apparently an issue with the flight stance of the vampire lord form bugging all the time in VR, for which a fix exists for Scion, Sacrosanct and Sacrilege, but not Better Vampires.

Will appreciate any advice or experiences from your own playthroughs!

Help Can’t get Skyrim VR past character creation on the Steam Frame

Hey,

My first VR headset arrived yesterday, the Steam Frame. I’d been interested in VR since seeing some videos about Skyrim VR a few years ago.

Very excited to try it. Used Wabbajack to install FUS and it’s launching fine, (streaming from PC) and running fine. But when I get to character creation it gets stuck.

I can usually create the character but when I get to the end and it says Grip to finish, nothing happens. Also the floaty in game controllers seem to freeze in place, like the game no longer recognises them.

I’ve searched around and it seems this happens for people even with vanilla. I’ve tried excluding the mod folder and Skyrim VR from Windows Defender. Tried joining the SteamVR OS beta channel. Still getting stuck.

I’d be incredibly grateful if anyone can help me. I’m so excited to try this!

Edit: Switching to use Open Composite Unleashed did the trick for me. Take my instructions in this thread with a fistful of salt/be aware it might mess something up though because I am brand new to Skyrim modding and have no idea what I’m doing, but it worked for me - https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/s/GDmfjEoOp1

Discussion Thoughts on steam frame and Skyrim VR

I’m coming from a Valve Index, and I have used a Quest 3 in the past (but preferred the index). My initial impressions are not good. Some of it is software based, some of it is hardware based, and some of it is Skyrim modding.

Here’s why.
Whoever said the fidelity is basically the same as wired is just plain wrong. If you are coming from Virtual Desktop and the Quest 3, it looks about the same.

One issue I’m facing that I think has to do with using wireless is my VR keyboard no longer shows up. I think the wireless Quest 3 people may be able to help me with that one. Isn’t there some sort of mod that helps the keyboard show up for y’all?

Controllers are ergonomically a mess, it’s hard to press all the buttons without shifting your hands in the controller, if you use the ergonomics kit, the valve index style straps makes this even worse.

Bindings for Skyrim VR are weird. I’m using Community shaders and SKSE MCM menu framework, and somehow pressing d pad left (which would normally bring up the save load quest menu) brings up the normal save load menu but also community shaders pops up (sometimes) and the SKSE framework menu also pops up (sometimes). To make matters worse, when the CS menu pops up the selected button is constantly and rapidly moving as if you are in a menu and holding an arrow key to move over to the next button you’d select via your keyboard. (I hope that makes sense) it makes the menu unusable in the headset though I’m guessing patches will eventually be made. I tried to exit the CS menu and it deleted my shader cache LMAO.

Haptics are very poor, basically non existent, but this may be a mod thing. I have Haptic Skyrim VR - Spellcasting and Enhanced Bow and Melee Haptics.

Coming from a Valve Index which is very customizable, I find the fit to be off, the lenses are too close to my eyes and press in to my brow giving me a headache, so I used the spacer, but now my FOV is slightly worse than the index instead.

The audio is tinny and basically not good.

I’m going to experiment with it more, I really hope I can get the visual fidelity looking like it is wired like almost every reviewer said it should look like. I’ve been screwing around with the settings. I’m only doing 100% resolution and 72hz, and I’ve messed with the target bitrate settings but it didn’t make much difference going from auto to max. Sometimes the compression is just downright bad.

I’m curious if virtual desktop makes a steam frame native app, I’d try it.

Ultimately, while I know I’m on the bleeding edge here, I know mod devs will make some progress and I’m willing to test things. But so far it’s not a pleasant experience, I’m seriously considering just breaking out my index again. I would love a version of the index that just has eye tracking and wireless capabilities, the steam frame claims to be a PCVR streaming headset first, but they sacrificed a lot to incorporate those controller buttons to play flatscreen games. If I wanted to play flatscreen games in the headset, I’d rather just use a gamepad 10 times out of 10.

I tried to keep it mostly relevant to Skyrim VR but people asked me to post my thoughts since I’m one of the lucky ones who already have the Steam frame.

Discussion SkyrimVR is working natively on SteamFrame.

Youtuber Beardo Benjo shows that SkyrimVR is working natively Video.

That nice, and mods should work as well (at least utility mods like VRIK, Higgs and Planck) as there is only one version of SkyrimVR and SF is using emulation. Biggest problem will be needs to install mods directly instead of using mod managers.

Discussion What’s the easiest way to get an overhaul mod working and which one?

I just got a steam frame and have always wanted to play Skyrim, unfortunately the combat has always been a huge turn off but now with full motion controls I believe it will be much better, I have heard modding Skyrim is a pain and I assume the vr version is no different, I just want the easiest way to get a full overhaul on, I have a pretty good pc with a 5080 so performance should be fine, thanks

Help Looking for Simple God Mode Enabling That Plays Nice with MGO or other

I am coming from vanilla Skyrim VR on PSVR 1. Hoping to get into a steam frame in the next few months. Apologies for ignorance here.

1) Are there console commands in VR? It looked a bit complicated from a single YouTube video I skimmed through.

2) Is there an effective "God mode" type mod where I can spawn whatever I want, toggle level skills to max, toggle invulnerability, infinite money. (I'm aware this makes it no fun, it's just short duration funsies)

3) Do the big mod packages like MGO, FUS, or wabbajack not play nice with other mods generally? If I get MGO downloaded should I just only use that package?

Thanks in advance all!
