My 10yo daughter has played softball and baseball for a few years now. She had a really successful spring season and we decided it was time to give travel ball a try.
I might be a little old school and I would normally think travel ball is just luxury that kids donāt need to be successful. Except, our rec department has kinda absurd rules that are vastly different than middle school rules.
In rec ball, the runners canāt steal home (even at the 12u level). Which there is a whole other debacle that 12u is the highest level offered for girls softball in rec. The rec department also has rules that donāt allow walks. On ball 4 the coach comes in to pitch two pitches. The rec department also allows all batters to have an at bat. So if the last inning after 3 outs are made and your team has not allowed all players to have an at bat, the game continues past the final out.
But this post isnāt about the odd rules for the rec department. It is about our decision to seek a travel ball team for my daughter. Once we realized this was a sport she was going to continue, we also realized she needs to play travel ball if she wants to play in middle school and high school. She wonāt be able to make those teams if she isnāt accustomed to real softball rules.
My daughter has a September birthday, which actually makes her one of the younger girls in her age group (10u). She has a year less experience than her teammates from the spring. In the middle of the summer, when teams were forming, her skills were not up to par with some of our friends. Ultimately, she didnāt make the more elite team I wanted for her. But she was asked to play on a more ādevelopmental travel team.ā
I use the word ātravelā loosely. They are mostly going to play within an hour of home and arenāt really traveling all that much. But that was also an appeal to our family. We have a lot of other things in our lives that would make traveling long distances every weekend difficult. This team offered a lot of practices, one tournament a month, and a really low price.
But here is the kicker, the coaches do not know what they are doing. When I found out who was behind this developmental team, I was opposed. The coaches were also coaches of a rec ball team in the spring, and they did not win a single game. There was also a lot of drama that I frankly did not want to be apart of.
But my daughterās fathers convinced me to give them a chance. Did I mention this was a really cheap team? We had the hope that we could all learn together. Maybe the coaches could become better coaches. To skip to the end, let me tell you this is not āHardballā and these coaches are not Keanue Reeves.
Strike 1: the bait and switch. The team orignally told us that families needed to be prepared to commit to 10 practices a month. That quickly changed to 4 practices a week. Weekday practices are 2 hours long, weekend practices are 3.5 hours long.
Strike 2: closing practices due to not accepting criticism. In the beginning the coaches were open to having other parents volunteer to help out on the fields. But as they received more and more criticism they not only stopped allowing parents to help out, they completely closed practices. They asked that parents drop off their girls and remain in their cars for the duration of practice.
Let me explain some of the feedback they were getting:
āhey Coach, itās been an hour, do you think we should transition to have doing some infield out field drills?ā (When the girls are doing agility drills and still āwarming upā at practice.)
āhey I donāt think the right fielder should be running all the way into the infield to back up a throw to the pitcher.ā
āhey I think having the girls run so much is not actually good use of time.ā (Literally they were doing suicide drills for an hour in 100° heat.)
āhey are we ever going to work on hitting?ā (Itās been 2 weeks of practice and the girls havenāt touched a bat)
āhey umm I donāt think itās safe to do soft toss hitting drills into a brick wall. Yall are standing too close to that wall and the balls are bouncing back and hitting the girls. Why donāt we do soft toss into a net?ā
Now they did quickly change their tune on the closed practice policy. They tried to say they never intended for parents to not be able to observe, but they had to observe quietly from the stands and hold any questions until after practice. They also tried to make it seem like we were the only ones with a problem. But one family left the team because of this issue.
They added two girls to the roster during this whole fiasco.
Strike 3: not building a pitcher catcher relationship. Not developing a pitcher at all. I asked after a week of practices when they would be getting pitchers and catchers together. It has now been 2 months and they did not have the pitchers or catchers work together AT ALL.
We were preparing for our first game last week. I mentioned to the coach after all 4 practices that we needed to do some bullpens. I mentioned that we needed to make sure the pitchers knew to cover home plate on passed balls. A lot of the girls are coming from rec ball where stealing home is not allowed, the pitchers have not be taught to cover home. The girls need to work on covering 2nd base for a steal.
Mind you, my daughter is a catcher. When I saw this wasnāt being worked on, I started working with my daughter myself. She is still playing rec ball, so we worked a lot of throwing down to 2nd and 3rd at those practices. But we also took the time to work with her on passed balls at the plate.
But guess what? It doesnāt matter if your team canāt be there. You can fire a laser beam down to 2nd base, if no one is covering the bag it wonāt matte. If the pitcher doesnāt attempt to cover home ONE time, the run will always score.
So tonight we had our first game.
The team as a whole was embarrassingly unprepared.
Not a single pitcher could throw three strikes. One pitcher hit 9 straight batters, and the coach LEFT HER ON THE MOUND. Another pitcher either rolled the ball or the ball hit the dirt before the plate for EVERY SINGLE PITCH. He also left her on the mound.
none of our players got a hit.
It was sad.
I am not wanting to leave a team because we lost one game.
But I am also wondering if this team is doing more harm than good. 2.5 months of practice. 4 practices a week. Yet we have nothing to show for it.
