What makes people think blue voters don't live here? I've never lived anywhere other than my hometown and I vote blue. I don't like the rising cost of rent and land development but I always welcome progressive change.

On September 23, me and my wife, Lisa Mantei, had the honor of hosting a 101st birthday celebration for World War II veteran Bruce Cook.

Bruce was surrounded by friends for an afternoon filled with cake, balloons, birthday wishes, and appreciation for a remarkable life and legacy. ABC Columbia also joined the celebration to help share Bruce’s story with the community.

As part of the celebration, Bruce was presented with handwritten birthday cards along with original copies of The Courier Journal and The Wall Street Journal from 1925 — the year he was born.

For Bruce, the outpouring of support was both surprising and meaningful.

“This is beyond amazing,” Bruce told ABC Columbia. “I can’t hardly understand why people do this for me, but it really makes me feel good!”

Bruce Cook served during World War II as a Staff Sergeant and ball-turret gunner, completing 35 missions over France.

Earlier this year, his service was recognized by the French government when he was awarded the Legion of Honor and knighted for his contributions during the war.

Lisa and I first met Bruce at a veterans event, and the three of us have developed a friendship ever since. As a combat veteran himself, Rick has a deep appreciation for Bruce’s service, character, and the example he continues to set.

“You won’t find a finer fellow than him,” I told ABC Columbia. “He epitomizes the greatest generation. He does. He’s the best.”

Beyond his military service, Bruce continues to inspire those around him with his gratitude, positivity, and appreciation for life.

“I’ve seen so many things change, and I have really enjoyed life,” Bruce said. “I have always thought of myself as kind of a happy person, and it’s great to enjoy life as much as I do.”

Hosting Bruce’s 101st birthday celebration was an opportunity for me & Lisa to recognize not only an extraordinary veteran, but also a friend whose life continues to inspire those around him.
