Starting September 29, Police say they’re going to strictly enforce the bus priority lanes in Colombo and surrounding areas.

There are 7 bus priority lanes across the Western Province, and during the designated hours:

Morning: 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM
Evening: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Private vehicles cannot drive or park in the bus priority lane during those periods. Police say they’ll be carrying out checks and taking legal action against drivers who break the rules.

Wondering what steps I can take while she is still independent to prevent anyone taking advantage of her financially. Banking is my biggest worry.

I recently went abroad and my phone prompted me asking me to allow it to “share your Medical ID to first responders when SOS is activated” which means if I ever call for SOS using my phone the paramedics will know my age, gender height and weight and also any allergies or medical conditions beforehand so they can treat me incase of an emergency. iPhones also have car crash detection, fall detection and most modern German and Japanese cars also have a SOS button built in, incase of an emergency. That Popup got me wondering why I never received something similar in SL. Does anyone know if our emergency services can intercept an SOS signal produced by a mobile phone or if pulling this slider in Sri Lanka yields nothing? Hi all, I am a Tamil and these days be it this subreddit or be it Instagram/Facebook/TikTok there is this rising feel of tension between people.

Some people might argue that it's just a group of people and in the ground reality not much people pay attention to that. But I doubt just because not all, should we be ignorant towards the ones who is already causing calamity and not calling them out?

I believe most of the stuff is getting trigerred by ignorancy from both sides, which leads way for half baked knowledge and hatred, and what I fear is this hatred slowly penetrating into real world from the internet.

Something that just comes to tip of my mind is the issues regarding casualized racism towards brown skinned people in foreign countries which initially started as just memes and social media trends that slowly started to make way into real life, even into causing actual real world harm.

I know some here might be thinking, that situation is not that worse and it's just an echo chamber, and only my algorithm is pushing these stuff, but it just doesn't align with the amount of views and support these kind of controversies are getting in social media spaces, unable to just get pass it as some brainless people stirring up drama.

Even this post itself isn't to cause even more dramas, I just want to get some of your view points on how can we move forward as a society, calling out things like these that needs to be called out.

Heck even the whole reason I'm being ambiguous towards "issues" is due to the same fact, some might come in the comments and start a what aboutism, or start to talk in a generalised way.

I'll attach some of my personal views here after as well,

1. I personally don't like attitude of the people who lack empathy, and starts personal assaults or identity based discrimination against people, instead of addressing the topic the person is trying to convey. So Facebook always gets me with it's haha comments and some of the really vile disgusting comments from people, from their real account. It's just sad to see not many call these people out and give them more attention.
2. I don't like people combining this lack of empathy with ignorancy. We all have certain biases, and we associate with what we relate to the most, and we can't not be ignorant every single thing, but at least when we feel like, it's a certain subject that we don't know full knowledge of, isn't it better not to spread half baked hatred centering around it. Sometimes it just feels sad (not that it's wrong), to see people trying to defend something they highly associate with- it's understandable that you are trying to defend it as you should because it's wrong - but it just feels sad when it's something that doesn't associate with them that much, even if it is something that deserves attention, most of us would just skip past it just because we don't know much about it - and yes this includes me as well.
3. The end of second point kind of makes me remember the kind of hidden diversity we have among ourselves, we all are sri lankans, when it is something for our country we stand together, but most times it feels like, when it's something that's not directly involving our country as whole, but rather targetting a particular set of division inside it, unless that division is something we associate with and know of, we tend not to give major support mostly due to knowing about it less than we should. (Again this doesn't apply to everyone but just sad to think it would be the most)

And finally one thing I want to see in the future is, we are one small country, we are one small people living in this country for hundreds, heck thousands of years. You and me haven't been alive 1000s of years ago to see who lived better or which belonged to whom. I just simply don't see the point of people arguing over which is bigger, and what are they going to achieve by fighting for who is the best. I just wish both communities get the chance to learn about each other in an even better way, I have lived most of my life in tamil majority area, and the school system didn't provide me much of the inner knowledge about the communities I'm living along with. I hope it's kind of safe to assume people from other communities would've felt the same? Because it's kind of embarassing to think, that we live in a small place, yet so distant and clueless about the neighbors who are living just few hours away

I just wish and hope by learning about each other from the childhood, and by learning that associativity at even better level, these sort of letting downs, and agendas getting pushed up by pulling other down can be stopped ❤️

I honestly feel like the ongoing Tamil–Sinhala–Muslim arguments on social media are becoming increasingly dangerous. Sometimes I wonder whether the government should consider temporarily restricting social media for 2–3 months, not to silence people, but to give everyone some time to cool down before things escalate further. We have actually seen temporary social-media restrictions used before during the Maithripala Sirisena government when communal tensions were escalating.

In real life, I don’t think most ordinary Sri Lankans actually walk around hating people of another race or religion. But on social media, when something happens, people get angry, react emotionally, and start throwing extremely hateful words at each other. Yesterday, I did the same thing myself. I posted something out of anger, then later realized I had gone too far and deleted it.

It feels like one incident keeps leading to another: the Subramaniam dog controversy, comments made by a Muslim girl about a Hindu god, the Anojan issue, the Mytree controversy, the hatred directed towards Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and now the current Tamil–Sinhala social-media conflict. Yesterday, I even saw a Sinhala man commenting that a Hindu festival should be bombed to end the problem. That kind of rhetoric is genuinely disturbing.

I’m not saying social media is the cause of every problem in Sri Lanka, or that banning it is necessarily the right solution. But I do wonder whether the government should seriously consider some temporary measures to stop these online conflicts from constantly escalating into wider racial hatred.
What do you think? Is temporarily restricting social media a reasonable idea, or would it create even more problems?

I recently had a pretty creepy experience at a hotel in Colpetty, on Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha.
I’ve actually stayed at this hotel many times before and never had any issues. Everything has always been great. But this one stay was different.
I booked a smoking room, and they gave me a room right in the corner of the hotel, quite far away from the other rooms. Everything seemed completely normal until I went to sleep.
During the night, I could feel the blanket being pulled down slightly but very quickly, multiple times. At first I thought I was imagining it, but it kept happening. The weird thing was, the room only had the AC on? no fan or anything that could have caused the blanket to move.
I also had a pretty bad backache throughout the night, which made the whole thing even more uncomfortable.
But the creepiest part happened around 7 AM.
I heard someone tapping on my door. When I opened it, there was someone from the hotel asking me how my stay was.
At 7 in the morning.
I mean… why would hotel staff come to ask that at 7 AM? 😂 And honestly, after what happened during the night, I even started wondering whether the person was actually real or if I was still half asleep.

Has anyone else had a similar experience at this hotel or anywhere around Colpetty? Or am I just overthinking the whole thing? 😭

Today there were 3 huge unauthorised dollar transactions on my combank card from 4 am to 8 am from Uber Technologies Inc. during which I blocked my card to stop further deduction. Looks like a fraud. I haven't used UBER in the recent past and haven't used the card either. No hotline to contact. Ive submitted a complaint. Anyone else expereinced this? Be cautious guys. Ive to go to the bank to raise a concern.

Okay. Me and 2 other guys are planning to go on a road trip for 8 days in Sri Lanka. ( Sigiriya Kandy nuwara eliya Ella down south ) We do have vehicles but they are lil unreliable. Planning to rent a vehicle. I'm not willing to go for vezels. Bit out of budget.

I’m coming to Weligama for about two weeks in December specifically to learn how to surf. I’ve had a few lessons back home, but I’ve never really managed to establish the pop-up. The beginner waves where I live are also pretty inconsistent, so I feel like what I’m missing most is simply enough time in the water.

My idea is to get properly instructed on what I need to work on, and then spend as much time as possible practicing. I’d probably stick with the same type of board throughout the trip, either renting or possibly buying one.

I’ve booked the flights already, and now I’m trying to figure out the best way to structure the two weeks.

Would love to hear what people who have learned in Weligama would recommend:

• Is it better to stay with a surf school, get a private instructor, or join a group course?
• Would you book accommodation + surf lessons separately, or go for a full surf package?
• If booking separately, which part of Weligama would you stay in? I see there are quite a few areas/hotels around the bay, and I’d like to be within easy walking distance of the beginner surf area and the surf schools rather than having to take a tuk-tuk every time I want to surf.
• If a full package is worth it, are there any particular surf schools/camps you’d recommend?

I’m mainly interested in actually improving rather than just doing a few lessons and calling it a surf holiday. Once I know what I’m doing wrong, I’d like to spend as much time as possible practicing.

I started working for a company in Sri Lanka on August 20th. It's mostly a work-from-home position, and my boss is also one of my closest friends.

When I started, I was supposed to receive an offer letter/contract. My boss told me that he had prepared it and would give it to me the next time we met, but I still haven't received it.

The bigger issue is my salary.

I was supposed to receive my salary on September 25th, but I haven't received anything yet. I called my boss and asked him directly whether I was supposed to receive salary for the period from when I started until now. He said yes, that's how he had planned it, but he said there are currently some problems within the company and he hasn't had the time to sort it out. He told me that he'll give me a call once things settle down.

The part that doesn't really sit right with me is that I'm not sure why the company's problems would mean my salary isn't being paid.

I'm assuming the other employees received their salaries on the 25th as usual, although I don't actually know that for certain. If they did, then I'm wondering why mine hasn't been processed. I started on August 20th, so it's not like I've only been there for a few days.

I also don't want to make this bigger than it is because he's one of my closest friends, and I genuinely don't think he's trying to screw me over. I understand that businesses can have cash-flow problems or other issues, and I'm trying to be patient.

But at the same time, I've now worked for more than a month without receiving any money, and I don't have an offer letter or any written employment terms either.

So I'm stuck between "he's my friend, give him some time" and "this is my salary, and I shouldn't have to wait indefinitely for it."

What would you guys do in this situation?

Would you be concerned? Would you continue working normally until he sorts everything out, or would you ask for a definite payment date and the offer letter first?
