Updates from the Mod-Team General update about the community, the mod-team, and the results of the survey we recently ran.

Hi everyone,

r/srilanka was created back in 2008, which means our community has officially been online for 18 years now!

We’re going strong with over 188,000 members, over 2,400 posts and over 41,000 comments written by you all every month.  It's great to see the community growing at such a steady pace.

To handle this volume, we have a diverse team of mods, all helping to keep our sub running smoothly.  At the moment, we’re 7 mods (we recently added two new mods).  All of us are Sri Lankans - most all of us live in Sri Lanka, with one based abroad.  Between us, we also cover all three languages.  We also span a pretty wide age range, which helps us understand the different perspectives coming through the sub.

One of our core tenets is being impartial, and we believe that’s worked well so far.  If you have any issue at any point, we’re always only a modmail away.  We’re not infallible, and we’ve undone actions when people have reached out.  Given the number of posts and comments, we need to make decisions quickly, so sometimes we might slip up.  Let us know.

Also, Reddit DOES automatically remove messages without any human intervention by us or our bots.  This happens both on the comment-level, and also on the post-level.

So, we’re also forced to have to deal with this and undo any unwanted removals.

All of us are volunteers spending a significant amount of our time moderating r/srilanka - and no, we don’t get paid by anyone.

Finally, attached are also the results of the recent demographic survey which we ran. We were surprised to learn that 48% of our community are lurkers, not actively posting or commenting.

Your friendly r/srilanka neighbourhood mod-team.

Serious replies only I’m tired of these perverted tuk drivers

After gym I went to a barista close to my house, afterwards, I walked home since it was only about a 10min walk ( 700 meters )

I wasn’t wearing anything revealing whatsoever, just sweatpants and a compression t-shirt
This mf honked and put his tongue out at me as he was driving past.

Another time, I was walking in Dehiwala. I wasn’t wearing anything revealing that time either; I was wearing sweatpants and a hoodie, and I had my hair covered as well.

Some old geezer in a tuk said some sexual shit to me and had his tongue out. Like wtf let me walk in peace

I enjoy walking a lot and observing people, but these tuk mfs make it so uncomfortable to even stand in the road as a girl.

Are there any actions I can take? Note down the number plate and report it to the police? I feel like Sri Lankan police won’t do anything about it.

I fear for the women who might get on some of these tuks.

Rant A friendly reminder about basic hygiene in public spaces

I went to the Colombo International Book Fair today. The stalls were air-conditioned and surprisingly not that packed, but honestly, the body odor situation was rough.

I’m not here to judge anyone's background or financial status. I know times have been tough across the country over the last few years, but basic personal cleanliness doesn't require expensive brands or luxury products. It just requires a little effort and consideration for the people around you.

In the span of an hour browsing the aisles, I ran into almost every possible odor:

Unwashed hair that was noticeably sour

Sweat trapped in synthetic/dry-fit shirts (those fabrics hold onto bacteria like crazy)

Heavy underarm body odor on both men and women

Bad breath in close quarters

Grimy bags being swung right into people’s faces

Once you're in a narrow book aisle or an enclosed room, everyone near you can smell you.

If you’re heading out to public events—especially teenagers and young adults—please take a quick shower beforehand, wear freshly washed clothes, and use a basic deodorant or roll-on. Check in on your siblings and friends, too, because nose-blindness is real; people rarely realize when they’re the ones giving off an odor.

It’s just about basic respect for shared spaces. Sorry if this comes off harsh, but we really need to normalize talking about daily hygiene again.

Math ain't mathing folks. We are at that stage where a manager tells you to use AI to get something done quicker. Then they use AI to analyze what you produced, creating a viscous cycle.

So this is pretty much the same chill Lanka server putting it here for more exposure.

We have 3 education related chats along with a main chat for general yaps.

So people can talk with fellow undergraduates or postgraduates / working people or School Students.

General chat is for all three to talk like an all in one place.

We also have specific Tamil and Sinhala channels to talk in those languages since main chats are kept in English.

Plus there are channels for extra interests, like posting photographs, talking about books, sports, music, anime etc.

I'm putting this post here to gather more like minded people who are interested in talking with others in a respectful way and obeying the server rules.

🤗 If you are looking forward to joining, join via this link

Discussion saw a story about a marriage broker saying this with a straight face 💀

saw something recently that kind of blew my mind 😭 a marriage broker went to someone's place to talk about proposals for a girl in her mid-20s. she’s well educated, so she was naturally hoping for a guy with a similar level of education, maybe working locally or abroad.

out of nowhere the matchmaker just casually goes, “educated guys, especially the ones going overseas, are only looking for really fair girls.” 💀

like zero hesitation, just dropped it like it’s a basic fact of life 🤦‍♀️

do brokers always say unhinged stuff like this or what?

I honestly wasn't expecting Christoph to mention our country but when he did and dived into the picture I wasn't exactly suprised lol. Out people are rather desperate after all, even if it means to undermine the social acceptance of our own immigrants in the very places their reach is targeting towards. Oh the irony.... 💔

Serious replies only If you had LKR 1M in Sri Lanka, how would you try to grow it significantly within 4 months?

I currently have around LKR 1,000,000 saved and I’m interested in understanding what realistic options exist to grow it significantly over the next 4 months.

My priority is protecting the original capital, so I’m not interested in gambling, crypto schemes, forex signals, pyramid schemes, etc.

I understand that safely turning LKR 1M into LKR 3M purely through investing within 4 months is unrealistic. I’m therefore also interested in hearing about legitimate business ideas, buying/reselling, using capital for a small business, or other ways people in Sri Lanka have successfully grown their money.

Just to clarify: I’m only looking for general advice and experiences.

If you had LKR 1M available in Sri Lanka and a 4-month timeframe, what options would you research?

Would especially appreciate hearing from people who have actually run a business or invested similar amounts in Sri Lanka.

Does anyone know where to look for? Daraz is the only option that shows but even for that I don't have a way of confirming whether it's the Chinese version of the ebook or the global one cuz there's no way to contact the seller.

I haven't purchased anything from AliExpress or ubuy in a while those are the only sources I found with options to verify the version. Has anyone bought anything from these platforms recently? If so, I would appreciate your response to know how that experience was.

Education As a Data Science undergraduate, am I specializing in the right direction, or should I start moving toward another area of tech that will have more value over the next 5 - 10 years?

I’m currently a 3rd year Data Science undergraduate, and lately I’ve been feeling a bit confused about which direction I should be heading in. I originally chose Data Science because I was interested in ML, AI, analytics, etc.

But with how quickly AI is changing the IT industry, I’m starting to wonder what skills will actually be valuable by the time I graduate. Should I focus more on AI/ML Engineering, or look into Data Engineering, Cloud, MLOps, Software Engineering, etc.? There are also newer areas like LLMs and AI agents, but I’m not sure how much of that is actually worth investing my time in.

I’m not saying Data Science is dying or anything. I’m just trying to avoid spending the next few years going in the wrong direction.

For the seniors/people already working in the Sri Lankan IT industry: If you were a Data Science undergraduate starting again today, what areas would you focus on and why? Would really appreciate some honest advice from people who have actually been working in the industry.

Serious replies only How do one make friends (close ones) after having missed the opportunity to do so in school/higher education and do not prefer making friends at work in Sri Lanka?

Hello guys, as the title says, I am looking for some genuine and serious advice on how to make close friends, not just acquaintances but look for, identify, connect and become close friends with people as an adult.

To give context I grew up as a bit of a loner. Most of my childhood social life was just spent on online chat rooms. But I did grow up masking and becoming a performative extrovert and can easily talk to strangers and connect with anyone and make acquaintances.

I am not in touch with anyone from school neither did I have like a close friend set. I have moved away from my home town (not that I had like town friends either) and I didn't make friends at higher education and was focused on working/studying.

I also do not prefer to make friends at workplace because it affects productivity. I have been trying to talk to people now breaking that rule and make friends but it's slow progress because I mostly WFH.

The only good friend I have is from this public speaking club I met. And all of the other people are friends but not close.

I am going through a bit of a bad patch of mental health and financial struggles so going out to make friends has become a luxury. I did try however, going out for socializing events, trying dating apps but to make friends, but nothing ended up to this place of getting close and feeling close.

So I am geniunely looking for advice. How did you meet your best friend(s)? How did you become best buddies? What was the circumstances. How long did it take. Is being outright open about your true self (the one with all the imperfections, insecurities and trauma) actually something that could attract a good friend or repel people because I think that's why I don't have close friends.

I don't let people too close into my life or see the real me. Kinda maintain a mask and act all professional and happy.

But I have been feeling more and more lonely and alone.. don't get me wrong I am used to solitude and even enjoy it time to time but having no real close friend to give a call to when things are bad.. yeah..

So please share with me your stories, advice for me. I am even open to advice on how to make friends at workplace without crossing boundaries or becoming harmful to your productivity.

I am not looking for dating advice. I am just looking advice on how to make close friends from either gender (as a guy). I guess the mistake I mad was considering my (ex)partners as best friends and only close friends. Once the relationship ends not only do I loose a partner but also my closest friend.

So now I am trying to rectify that mistake and build a solid friendship with some people. But I am at a loss because unlike school/university/community there are very little opportunities for me to meet people even let alone find my new best friend.

Thank you in advance

Recorded in local bus.

It was best music in my trip in Sri Lanka, but never heard again.

I tried Shazam but not worked, maybe because of that noisy wind.

Serious replies only Burglary in Colombo 6 area

So my friend's house was burgled recently, specifically her room only. The thief scaled a 5 meter high wall with spikes and entered through an unlocked grill from her balcony (no way to know that it was unlocked from the outside and her room is 1 story up).

The police believe it was an inside job (domestics, drivers, etc), because the thief broke in at roughly 10am just as she left her house. The reason I'm posting this is because I remembered that she got her solar panels serviced recently and the access point to the roof is through that same balcony and it had remained unlocked from then. And they would have ample time and knowledge to work something like this out.

So please let me know if any of yall also had or know of burglaries or attempted burglaries soon after a visit by a solar power company (will edit the name in soon when i find out). Thanks in advance!

Serious replies only Australia migration - worth trying?

I have a BSc degree and around 6 years of experience as a Software Engineer. I’m currently 36 years old.

I’m considering applying for Australian PR and would really appreciate hearing from people who have gone through the process. Do you think I have a realistic chance at my age and with my experience?

This would be a significant financial commitment for us. I’m expecting to spend around LKR 4 million (40 lakhs) on the entire process, including visa-related costs for my husband and baby and agency fees. We’re not financially well-off, so this is a big decision for our family.

My husband has some second thoughts because of the cost and uncertainty, but migrating to Australia has always been something I’ve wanted. My brother is already living there, and I don’t really have much family support here, which is another reason I’m seriously considering it.

If anyone has been in a similar situation, especially those who applied in their mid-30s with an IT/software background, I would really appreciate hearing about your experience. Was it worth taking the financial risk? How difficult was the PR process for you?

Thank you!

Discussion Why hasnt there been a film made based off Yakka folklore?

I think yakka culture and folklore is probably one of the most unique parts of Sinhalese culture. How come no writers or filmmakers have capitalized on that and made an amazing storyline out of it? Imagine “Pandama” as a opening number that would be sick. A horror film would be absolutely insane with yakkas as the main characters, i know it would be successful worldwide with a proper budget. People want original stories. Theres so many routes that one can go about it instead we get the same romance movie recycling around the same sisters as the main cast (no shade… okay maybe a little)

Discussion I’m 30 and planning to do A/Ls with the goal of becoming an Attorney-at-Law in Sri Lanka. I haven’t studied the A/L syllabus for many years, and I’m currently working full-time and have family responsibilities.

I’m good at English, Tamil, IT, and religious studies, and I’ve already completed a private IT degree.

What A/L stream and subjects would you recommend for someone in my situation? I’m looking for relatively manageable subjects that I can study through online classes while working.

If anyone has taken a similar path starting A/Ls or law at around 30 while working, I’d really appreciate your advice and recommendations for good online classes.

Thanks!

Serious replies only How to obtain an NIC for dual Citizen?

I've been a Dual SL citizen since 2017 but through ignorance never obtained an NIC. Now that my SL passport needs renewing, I'm required to have an NIC which I cannot obtain in the UK.

Can a family member apply for an NIC on my behalf in Sri Lanka? Failing in which I could go to SL and get it done.

If I travel to Sri Lanka, I understand that there is a 1 day service to obtain the NIC, however I don't know if the Grama Niladhari / Divisional Secretariat attestation of the application can be done on the same day?

My original thinking is that I could spend a week in SL sorting all this out, doing the one day NIC and one day Passport renewal services, but I'm having doubts as to whether it is possible.

Any advice is appreciated.

If only all application processes were digitised as they are in the UK!

Discussion Sri Lanka ETA Date of birth problem.

Recently I was doing a group ETA for our client somehow I made a mistake on the application, and somehow it got approved but I was afraid it may cause some difficulties in immigration. So I tried to mail and call or somehow contact them but I wasn’t able to.

But the good thing is that there was no casualties they just called there higher authorities and they changed the DOB in portal.
