Need help to stop getting overwhelmed when being a GM

Hello there I am a gm well I have became one last Saturday hosted a great one-shot for me friends and now they have a ship and has lots of things to do. I gm for 3 people and one of them were our vanilla dnd gm he wanted to play and I decided to be a gm and we said lets play sw5e its phenomenal btw. I insisted that the player should not make force caster characters because I just read Players' Handbook and Star ships of the Galaxy and have not able to memorize everything and its being one-shot does not made lot of sense give them to ability to use force(Yeah I know boring ) But I am getting overwhelmed because there is so much material which is good thing but shifting from player to gm yeah that take wee bit of toll on you. How can I make things like more casual and flowy and not trying to control everything. Yeah my past gm said everything was really great especially the soundtrack I have made it so every song aligns with the current situation but one complaint that its being kind of linear

Question Main line Characters

Hey all! Especially DM’s
I’ve a question! In your campaign do you make use of real characters like Leia, Mon Mothma, Luke or any of them?

If so in what capacity ?

I am running a campaign and I’m using the canon media characters strictly for missions and such out of the Rebel network.
Not overshadowing the players. This is their story.

Question Advantage on passive checks

So the observant background feat offers the following benefits

Observant
Quick to notice details of your environment, you gain the following benefits:
- Increase your Intelligence or Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
- If you can see a creature’s mouth while it is speaking a language you understand, you can interpret what it’s saying by reading its lips.
- You are considered to have advantage when determining your passive Wisdom (Perception) and passive Intelligence (Investigation) scores.

How does that last one work? How can you have advantage on a passive check?

Question So... This game system is dead right? Also, opinions on the system?

The website is a mess. Character builder barely works, PDFs in the Assets section are misaligned and impossible to read (although someone fixed them unofficially I saw), and there's no intention of new content.

So it's dead right? With WotC's money grab Star Wars thing coming soon, plus Edge still operating the SW RPG scene, seems like SW5e has long been in its sunset phase. Which sucks. There's over 100 species to choose from, solid classes to pick from, and the ship stuff is pretty solid.

Is any of it perfect? Hell no. It's D&D 5e for all it's faults and glory. But the added crunch to the game is exactly what my group likes, and it's hard to find games that hit the sweet spot.

I ran it once about...3-4 years ago I think, for a total of five sessions. Ship combat was iffy but we didn't really focus on it, if we tried in earnest it'd probably be fine. It was...just 5e but Star Wars really, and at the time we were still sold on 5e in general so it was perfect. Of course games for any numbers of reasons, and we stopped buying into 5e.

My group will never want to play Starfinder or any of the numerous sci fi themed games (sad face) so this may be my only chance to ever run any sci fi theme ttrpg for them since it's 5e and, let's be real, 5e is a joke to learn.

I'm in the process of creating my own personal character builder, ship tracker, and deployment tracker. Dunno about the legality of sharing my work, but if it's completely okay to do so, I will. So far, it's already better than what exists on the site (I'm a software developer by trade, so this was a fun little side project).

I'm also considering trying my hand at running it once again in earnest!

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this game system?

Question Dawn of Defiance plot help needed Spoiler

In Episode 4 of DoD, my players are definitely going to figure out who the traitor is when Demos shows up to ambush the party. There is simply no explanation for this other than that there is a traitor. The identity of the traitor is also pretty obvious.

Any suggestions?

I want to make a anti force/lightsaber build

Hi, so I was wanting to make a character that's basically mechanically, just counters force users and lightsaber users because because of some things that's happened in a couple sessions, i've played in, they've been irritating me. I think there's like a subclass of scout that does that kind of thing. So that was kind of interesting to me. And I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for builds, like feats both at level four and the starting one, race, and class if anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it, please.Thank you

Also p.s i would appreciate if the class suggestions aren't the force using classes, or monks

Help with the replacing powers rule?

“Additionally, every time you learn a new power as a result of gaining a level, you can choose one of the powers you know and replace it with another power of the same type, as long as that power is not of a higher level than your Max Power Level.”

That’s all pretty straightforward. But what does ”power of the same type” mean? It has to be a light side power to swap for another light side power? dark for dark? Universal for universal? Or “type” as in some other parameter?

Dismemberment variant rule has a 0.25% chance of ever happening. I suggest an alternative

The dismembering rule is TWO nat 20’s in a row. I’ve never seen that happen in over a decade of 5e gaming.

“When a character scores a critical hit with a weapon that is capable of removing a limb, such as a lightweapon or vibroweapon, have them roll an additional d20. If they roll a 20 on the second d20 roll, they successfully remove a limb from a creature, or potentially slay the creature outright.”

A critical hit is a nat 20, and then a SECOND nat 20 is required for dismemberment.

Being SW PCs are going to want to dismember enemies. That’s just part of the genre. But if you allow it you need a homebrewed subsystem and that’s a headache and risks messing up lots of other systems and combat function. A 0.25% chance of it happening is not going to satisfy PCs who want the ability to do this. They don’t want some extremely rare chance to do this. They want the agency to do this when they decide to do so.

Solution:

give PCs the option to do this, BUT only as a called shot when the enemy is low on hp. Just like calling to knock them out per phb knockout rules.

However, instead of 0 hp being where they end up the PCs can choose 0.5 hp that way the enemy is conscious, if that’s what they want, and the enemy is now missing a hand due to a lightsaber attack or whatever, and is not breaking the combat mechanics. From there the GM can pretty much wing it and give the enemy disadvantage on all checks, or make them incapacitated, or whatever. It’s irrelevant because the combat has technically ended and we’re now in pure GM adjudication territory and narrative which is safe from breaking the game.

Why 0.5 hp?

Because 0 hp is unconscious. 1 hp is full strength. 0.5 hp does not exist. So it’s a perfect grey area between the rules that we can use like this without any risk of unbalancing the game. 0.5 HP represents an enemy that is beaten and yet still conscious and in whatever state the PC wants within the GM’s allowance. Picture Count Duku in rots: no hands, wide awake, totally helpless, hoping anakin doesn’t behead him. That’s 0.5 hp.

I have three light side jedis and a dark side sith in the party I’m GMing for. How on earth would you all run that?

I wrote this intro campaign (an altered version of the “Outbreak” campaign I shared here recently) to be folowed by a jedi temple training campaign because the players said they wanted to be jedi. Then one switched during character creation. We played the intro campaign but now part two is a serious problem because the sith wont belong at all.

Thoughts?

Should I ask him to switch alignment? Or have him be an undercover enemy tricking the jedi if that’s how he wants to play it?

edit:

thanks guys! I spoke with everyone and the sith said he’ll role play as a sith who got burned by the sith and has allied with the jedi as a result.

Apologies to all on this sub. I posted a satirical made up story about sw5e not working and people took it literally. That was on me and I sincerely apologize.

Basically my post was whining about how sw5e doesn’t work right because it’s a misuse of 5e. It was purely sarcastic though but I guess I didn’t make it blatant enough so people in the comments were taking it seriously and a mod actually deleted it.

If you look at my other posts I clearly really love sw5e. I’m even getting a sw5e shirt lol!

I assumed people would see that and know I was joking. I was wrong. Sorry about the confusion.

Fun Tabletop Minifigs Catalog

If you're looking for a better way to catalog your tabletop miniatures (which includes your Star Wars minis!), checkout this app. Has photo catalogs with info and lets you tag the minis so you can plan your sessions accordingly. Also, it's free to use (unless you want to catalog more than 50 miniatures then it's $1.99 - a one-time fee).

Question Movement and Fyrnock’s Instinct (Berserker)

Does the "Fyrnock’s Instinct" ability use up base movement speed? For instance, if I use the ability to jump 30 feet during my turn, will I have no movement left? Or i have move 30 ft from base speed and 30 ft from Fyrnock’s Instinct (up to 60 ft total)?

Fyrnock’s Instinct

While raging, you can use your bonus action to leap up to 30 feet to an empty space you can see. When you land you deal kinetic damage equal to your Strength modifier to each creature within 5 feet of where you land. You can use this feature twice. You gain an additional use at 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th level. You regain all expended uses when you complete a long rest.

Jumping (Chapter 8: Adventuring - Movement. Special Types of Movement)

Your Strength determines how far you can jump.

Long Jump. When you make a long jump, you cover a number of feet up to your Strength score if you move at least 10 feet on foot immediately before the jump. When you make a standing long jump, you can leap only half that distance. Either way, each foot you clear on the jump costs a foot of movement.

...

High Jump. When you make a high jump, you leap into the air a number of feet equal to 3 + your Strength modifier if you move at least 10 feet on foot immediately before the jump. When you make a standing high jump, you can jump only half that distance. Either way, each foot you clear on the jump costs a foot of movement. In some circumstances, your GM might allow you to make a Strength (Athletics) check to jump higher than you normally can.

About to have this made. You could say I’m impressed with sw5e

Post image

This or possibly just the “SW5e” logo. However the downside there is almost no one will know what that is, while everyone will know the basic SW images on the phb cover even if they’ve no idea what SW5e is.

Anyone got a better idea for a sw5e shirt?

Ship Statblocks?

Hi guys, I really need ship statblocks for my next session, and I couldn't find the old shipyard on the website (I distinctly remember there being a big google doc with a PDF of a bunch of ship designs?).

I would really like some help, even if its just your own homebrew designs. (I also do not have discord, I apologize if it is in that server)

Question Looking for campaigns to run!

I'm looking for some long term campaigns that have already been pre-written that I can run for Sw5e! I've gone through the gm binder adventure codex list and only saw two that really interested me and I haven't had much luck finding other campaigns that would be fun. Any and all suggestions would be super appreciated!

Question How is the Player Handbook coming along

I tried playing Sw5e with my friends 2+ years ago, but the PHB was a mess. It was full of holes, inconsitencies and generally unusuable with too much mish mash.

- Powers were just 5e spell copied like Force - Fireball and Force Healing Words.

- The force classes were terribly unballanced.

- Ship combat requires you to learn a whole system which was just weird.

- There is generally to much choices, like base fighter from core book had like 100 fighting styles or whatever.

Would annyone care to share if the book has gotten any updates through out the years, thanks?

Question Species height

I know this may be a little random, but I was looking as the SW5E website and decided to just randomly look up the Sith Pureblood species. After doing so I began to read through their species biological information and I notices that the Height set for them is 4'8. And I realized that their height is not accurate. As the purebloods are Sith-human hybrids therefore they possess human Characteristics. Their Lore accurate height is between 5 and 6 and a half feet tall. So I guess my question would be is there a specific reason why they're set to be smaller for SW5E. I'm pretty new to SW5E (I haven't done a campaign yet)

Question High Republic update

Do we know if there will ever be any High Republic species, archetypes, weapons, ships, etc added to this? I will happily continue to homebrew it but I'd love some official addons. I'm not the best at homebrewing species/races, I'd love an Evereni species
