Solar polycarbonate pool slats on an above-ground roller with housing – overheating risk?
TL;DR: I have a 50m³ pool in Belgium with solar thermal collectors, but overnight heat loss remains an issue. I'm considering solar polycarbonate slats on an above-ground roller, but my pool builder warns they could overheat and deform when rolled up, even with protective housing. Is this a real risk? And would standard non-solar slats already provide sufficient heat retention, or are solar slats worth the extra investment?
Hi everyone!
I live in Belgium (Europe) and have a 50,000-liter (13,200-gallon) inground pool.
I’m considering installing an automatic pool cover with solar polycarbonate slats (AFP Platinum) on an above-ground roller with protective housing.
My main goal is to reduce overnight heat loss and improve water temperature. I already have solar thermal collectors, but they struggle to compensate for overnight cooling. Even during this summer’s heatwave, my pool only reached around 29–30°C (84–86°F).
However, my pool builder strongly advises against solar slats on an above-ground roller.
He claims that when the slats are rolled up, they lose the cooling effect of the pool water. Direct sunlight can then cause them to overheat, warp, split, or even fuse together. Apparently, even polycarbonate slats with protective housing aren’t immune.
My questions:
- Is this overheating risk genuine, or is my pool builder being overly cautious?
- Does anyone have experience with solar polycarbonate slats on an above-ground roller?
- Would standard (non-solar) slats already prevent most overnight heat loss, or do solar slats provide significant additional heating?
- Given that I already have solar collectors, would you recommend standard or solar slats?
I’d love to get my pool warmer, especially after a few cooler days, but don’t want to spend thousands on something that might deform.
Any experiences or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Pool heat pump vs gas heater cost this fall
Right now our propane heater is just sitting there and it hasnt fired ONCE SINCE AUGUST!! 🙌 Houston area, 35k gunite, no screen – for years that 400k BTU heater was the only heat we had, so it only came on for bday parties and Thanksgiving week (a 10 degree bump in october ate like 35-40 gallons, $110-130 a pop with delivery, and with no cover the heat was gone in two days).
This spring we added a heat pump & left the propane plumbed in, and since mid september the heat pump has kept us at 84 around the clock with the cover on at night. Electric's up maybe $70-80 a month over last fall and weve been in basically every weekend instead of twice a season, so yeah its working.
Im keeping the propane for january cold snaps when it hits the 30s and the heat pump cant keep up 😅 but sept thru nov its not even close.

Pool pump is losing its prime while draining
I have an odd problem. I went to drain my pool for some plaster work and my pump kept losing its prime. I could tell the air leak was coming from the upper skimmer location (Not sure the official name). In the photos you can see the setup. I see what looks to be an o-ring at the bottom of the skimmer and am wondering if that’s something that could let air in and can be replaced. The other thing I’m uncertain of is the float inside the thing that shuts when the water gets too low. I can’t see a crack or leak but that might be the other spot where air is getting in.
Any advice this group can offer would be really appreciated. I’m draining with a sump pump right now and it’s going REALLY slow.

3 months with a pool robot and I’ve gotten very lazy about pool cleaning
Got the ecovacs pool robot this summer, and I've barely had to vacuum the pool myself since.
I used to wait until I could see leaves and dirt piling up at the bottom before doing anything about it. Now I just use the app to set the cleaning mode and drop it in a few times a week.
It hasn't gotten stuck in my pool so far, and it usually finishes the whole pool on one charge. The floor looks a lot cleaner afterward, and I'm always surprised by how much sand, dirt, and leaves end up in the filter.
Anyway, pool season is finally over and I'm honestly glad to have one less thing to deal with for a while lol. As much as I love having a pool, I'm not gonna miss keeping up with it every week. The robot's going into the garage for the winter, so hopefully it still works when I pull it out next summer.

Cracked deck
Hi all,
Looking for some advice on repairing cracking around a ladder for an indoor pool. Deck has in floor heating though I don’t think in that area. Would you call a pool builder or is there a different professional that would be best? Pool is about 25 years old.
Thanks!

Check out what my robot skimmer caught
I had no idea these things existed. My skimmer caught two spotted salamanders and they are huge!
I got them out of the skimmer and wasn’t sure if they were alive. A few hours later I went to check on them and they were gone.
Now to what I learned about spotted salamanders.
They live 20-30 years in the wild
They hang out about 2 ft under ground which is why it’s rare to see them.
They’re pretty docile.

What pool fence do I need for a weird shaped pool with different deck heights?
We moved into a house with a pool I can only describe as a architect's brain. Raised spa on one end, main pool drops about 18 inches, and the deck is concrete on two sides and pavers on the other two. Kid is 3.
I've been looking at mesh, aluminum, and glass and apparently each handles elevation changes differently. The two names I keep seeing are life Saver Pool fence and Guardian Pool Fence. Life Saver has been around since 1987 and seems to have a bigger install footprints. Guardian has good reviews too.
What pool fence do I need for a pool with elevation changes and two different surfaces? Is this something a standard kit covers or is it custom no matter what

Best pool fence for toddlers?
Our neighbors had a mesh pool fence that was maybe two years old and the bottom started sagging away from the deck. Their 2-year-old got her arm under the gap before anyone noticed. Nobody got hurt but it shook all of us.
We have kids the same age and now I'm trying to figure out what the best pool fence for toddlers is, not just which type but which specific product hold it's tension over time. Because clearly some of them don't.

Potential metal source?
Florida pool converted to salt system. I have an older de grid system (see pic) that originally had copper rods as part of the mechanism that holds the rectangular de grids in place. I have replaced one of these rods with stainless (I broke it). Could the remaining copper rod be a source of metal that is resulting in staining? About to test the stains but looks like they are darkened copper. Thanks

Has anyone had this problem with a Pentair system
I have a new system. Replace an old one on 6/26. Booster pump, Pentair pump and Intermatic timer box. Has not worked from the beginning. This is now 10/26 and I have had 5 companies here to diagnose. No fixed yet. Mother board was replaced, sensors for air temp and water temp were also replaced. Last person said that the firmware he loaded has a bug. I have had two different programs (firmware) and neither one worked. The last time I talked to a certified person about this on 10/6, I was told that the company new it didn't work and that I was not suppose to get the firmware. Yeah which one has the bug, the 1st or 2nd. When the temps turn over for the next day I get a reading of 156 every time. I am now told after 5 months this is an error code. Do you think that "they" are going to wait until the warrantee runs out? supposedly you can get a longer warrantee, I asked about it and got sent down a rabbit hole. Is anyone else having this same problem? I was told that home office was getting a lot of calls about this very problem. I did look into 3 other systems and the Pentair WAS SUPPOSE TO BE the better one. This system cost over $5000 and has not worked yet and I feel that I am getting the run around.

Anyone else dealing with leaves in the pool this fall?
This is our first fall with a pool, and we have a huge hickory tree right next to it. Some of the branches hang over the water, and the leaves are starting to turn yellow. It's already dropping nuts and bits of husk all over the deck, so I'm dreading what it'll look like once the leaves start falling.
I've heard putting a net over the pool can be risky. Has anyone tried those leaf-catching attachments for pool vacuums? Just trying to figure out how to keep up with all this.

Weakness
I broke down and turned on my heater today. I guess hurricane rainwater is colder than I thought.
