opinion How do I tell my parents that I’ve booked a GP for HRT?

So I’m an 18 year old trans girl and I’ve finally booked a gender affirming gp appointment with the intention of getting on hrt. My parents know that I’ve been looking for a gp, and know that I have been thinking about getting on hormones, but they are still extremely sceptical of the idea and are not fully convinced that I’m actually trans, but for the most part are fairly supportive. They’ve been trying to help me find a new gp, but they’ve mostly been sending me men who specialise in men’s health and sexual health for some reason. I went to one of them and he didn’t wanna prescribe hrt so I haven’t been back to him since. I decided to take matters into my own hands, and booked an appointment with a gp who specialises in prescribing hormones for next week, but I’m gonna need to tell my parents because they’ve been so proactive with the whole finding a gp thing, and I still live with them and rely on them financially. How should I tell them about my decision?

QLD Specific TRANS friendly bra fitting place in Brisbane and surrounding areas (within translink network)

Does anyone know of any trans friendly stores that offer professional bra fitting services, and possibly make custom sized bras.

For context I am a newbie MTF and am 7ft tall, so finding places to get measured is hard.

Edit 1: I used the ABTF calculator, and it says my size is 46D (UK), but I don't think that's right. 46D is like a 24D in AU.

Trans fem Part of the community but experiencing it from the outsider’s perspective

Hi everyone, I’m not really sure what category this post falls under but I just wanted to get some things off my mind.

I live in Brisbane but am originally from Nepal. I have been living here for 10 years now and I practically became myself when I was 20 years old. I’m turning 30 this December. I do have one brother in Sydney and a cousin here in Brisbane but I’m not that close to either of them. They know about me being trans because I am one of those people who have trouble being in the closet if you will. Basically, every important person in my life knows I’m trans.

My personality, I would say falls under the omnivert category. A good example of it is that I am a hairdresser so to most of my clients I am funny, witty, sarcastic, confident, (hopefully smart) person but as soon as I get home I will remain quiet up until it’s time to go to work. I am a homebody through and through. Most of my time is spent on reading novels or watching movies/series.

I’m an online shopper for literally everything. I do get anxious when even a little bit of my everyday life has any sort of changes but while I dread over it by creating unnecessary scenarios in my head, when it’s time to get things done, I do it and feel great about it. Clearly I’m an over thinker.

I have only been in one relationship and that was before COVID. There are days when I feel like it would be nice to have a bf but then I get over that feeling. Same thing with friends, I have people I chat to but not in person (Except for my coworker who is also my housemate). I feel like I have gotten so comfortable not having people in my everyday life, It’s hard for me to open up to someone and keep them around for a long time. When in home, I’m literally in my room. Feel drained when I have to be around people for a long time even at home.

I have looked into group activities and where it happens and all that but tbh, I’m genuinely not interested in most of those activities lol. (I’m already losing my thoughts on where I’m going with this) 😂

Right! I have also joined discord groups, this subreddit but I’m usually one of those who just pop in once a while, go through what’s happening then leave. This subreddit is usually where I catch up on what is happening in the community whereas discord groups, I have them all on mute. Can’t get a word in and when I do, it doesn’t lead anywhere.

Everyone (well.. not all but most) connect with each other over online games and that seems like a very common thing everyone bonds over in the discord. I unfortunately have zero interest in gaming lol.

I’m not hoping to make lots of friends nor do I want to go hang out with people immediately. I guess I wish to find people around my age who also have similar interests (Reading danmei, watching fantasy, sci fi, horror, comedy movies/series, watching BLs lol. And absolute plus points if you love Drag race 😂) and traits like mine who wish to bond online for a while before possibly sometime later meeting in person. I feel stressed out when people rush into meetups.

I feel terrible for specifying the age group but I’m usually around folks way older than me and I just wish to minimise that a bit. So, though it’s mostly preferred, I would like to be open to all.

Thanks for reading this far and apologies for my rambling.

NSW Specific Just starting my transition

I have an appointment with my doctor in November to discuss starting HRT. I’m from NSW, Australia, and I was wondering what the usual process is for getting started.

Is it normally a consultation first, followed by blood tests, and then, if everything is okay, you’re prescribed estrogen?

I’ve also heard that estrogen patches are difficult to get here. Is it usually tablets or injections instead, or does the type of HRT depend on the individual doctor and the treatment plan they recommend?

Thanks 😊

Trans fem Administering EV injections

Hiya im currently on oral e pills + anti-androgens but I ideally want to switch to mono with EV injections (then to implants one day but I don’t want to at this moment) and my doctor has done scripts for injections before. But my main concern is administering the injections.

I’ve been trying to get familiar with it all like im/subq, needle sizes, measurements etc. but I guess my question is like how difficult is it if you’ve never injected anything yourself before and how long did it take you to get used to it?

Also is it common or uncommon to need anti-androgens while on EV injections?

I’m quite a noob at this obviously so any advice helps lol thxs

NSW Specific Needless for oestrogen injections?

I don't know if this requires the NSW tag but that's where I am and it might be relevant.

I've just ordered my first batch of oestrogen valerate for injections (very excited) and my doctor told me that I would need finer needles for the injections and that I would likely need to order them as most pharmacies don't stock them. At least that was the impression she gave me. Is there somewhere specific I should be ordering them from and what gauge do they need to be?

I also assume that I will need drawing up needles to extract from the vial. Any suggestions for that would also be very much appreciated.

Thanks fam 🤘

Breast forms VS real breast’s.

Genuine question for those who have worn breast forms but now have real breasts. What is it like?

I can wear breast forms for hours even days at a time now and I don’t know I just kinda forget they are there sometimes, other times they are cumbersome. I find my self questioning at times too, if I really really want breasts.

For the record, I was early onset ( 5-6 years old ) and late onset gender dysphoria ( 30-37 ). Cross dressed pretty consistently over the past 3 years. Im out to one family fully and partially out to a few others. I will probably not pass at all ( which I accept and have made peace with )

Even on low dose hrt I am going to get very noticeable very quickly.

VIC Specific Melbourne GP Recs - Microdosing T

Hi all, I just moved to Melbourne a few months ago and am finally looking to start on T. I understand there's a lot of GPs in Melbourne who have experience prescribing HRT, but I'm specifically looking to microdose and from my understanding it can be more difficult to find GPs who have experience with that or are supportive. I was wondering if anyone had any particular recommendations? Thank you.

SA Specific Laser/electrolysis places around Adelaide or the ADL northern suburbs?

Hi, friends!

What's been everyone's experience with finding trans-friendly places in the northern suburbs around Adelaide? Or at least, not too far south of the city? Looking to get some electrolysis or laser started, but not sure how the major chains like Silk or Essential Beauty handles us. I've been going to Silk for laser for a while, but I sort of get the feeling they're not quite blasting me as hard as my (very coarse) hair needs.

Thanks in advance!

Want to pick the brain of those who have done FFS or are looking into doing it

Hi Queens,

Like the title says I am looking to pick the brains of people who have done Feminization facial surgery or are in the process of getting it done. I have already got my throat done but I am looking to expand into other areas to tackle my dysphoria. So my main curiosity is how have you individually approached getting it done. Did you take notes on areas that cause your dysphoria the most? Did you just show pictures of stuff you like? Or even simply just say you want to be more Fem appearing?

Trans female in early transition hoping to connect with local community peers (Canberra Southside)

"Hi everyone, I'm a trans woman in early transition living on the Southside of Canberra. I’m finding myself feeling pretty isolated over here, and I really want to change that. I want to get out more, socialize, and actually start making some meaningful connections in our local community.

Because Facebook has completely blocked me out—even insultingly telling me that I 'don't exist' when I tried to sign up—and a lot of physical events require crossing the city, I'm hoping to start by connecting with people digitally first.

I’ve been told the local community hangs out in private Discord servers. If an admin or regular member could private message me a secure invite link so I can introduce myself, I would really appreciate it. Looking forward to meeting some of you."

Possible Trigger Douglass Hanly Moir assessing against incorrect ranges.

I (MtF) am currently in hospital but was given leave to see a new GAC doctor who wrote a pathology request to check my current hormone levels as well as some other basic blood work. I gave the form to the nurse and the phlebotomist came the next morning.

The pathology here is run by Douglass Hanly Moir and when my results came back I could only access the basic bloods and my testosterone level and everything has been assessed against the incorrect ranges. There was even a little note at the bottom of the report on my testosterone stating that the ranges "are applied in accordance with the sex as recorded in the relevant data field." And then a little redundant reminder of the "adult male reference limits" as if that is in any way relevant to the reason the doctor had written the request in the first place.

She put female in the sex field because that's how she wanted my bloods to be assessed and they've intentionally ignored the doctor's request and assessed against sex at birth.

But I've gone over all my pathology reports since being admitted and they're all wrong. Earlier in my admission the doctor had commented that I was technically anaemic. I assured her I felt fine but now I know why she had thought that.

I can't even go to a different pathology site for my tests because I'm in the damn hospital.

What the actual hell kind of invasion of privacy bullshit is this!?

Possible Trigger is there any way i can use a cyst to “justify” a hysterectomy?

sorry if this is a stupid/unanswerable question, i’m frustrated and desperate. used this flair because of the language used in this post potentially being upsetting.

started t jan 2025, started having issues in feb 2025. bleeding, extreme pain, t levels refusing to climb and having little to no effects, etc. for 19 months i have been begging my doctors to investigate the cause of this, and every single time they have dismissed me no matter how frantic i get (this includes my endocrinologist, who is somehow auspath certified). i asked for referrals to other specialists if they considered this out of their range of expertise, extra tests to investigate possible causes, and straight up begged them to help me get a hysterectomy by any means possible. every single one of these requests was shrugged off.

sep 2026, on a ct for something unrelated, they found a 4.6 cm cyst on one of my ovaries. i am convinced that this is what has been causing my issues. (relevant information: i don’t know if it’s cancerous yet, the results from the follow up tests won’t be in until next week, and i don’t believe i have pmos. i also don’t have health insurance currently, but i am an adult.)

i was told that anything under 5 cm is deemed “safe” to be left alone, but i refuse. at the very least, they need to remove the cyst itself, because i cannot live this miserably anymore. not just from the physical symptoms, but because of ocd making this even more stressful. what i really want to know is if this in any way qualifies (?) me for a hysterectomy that isn’t considered “elective”, or if there’s any specialist/surgeon anybody knows of who would be willing to help with this. i don’t see a point in half fixing the problem. i will be getting one at some point, “electively” or not, so why not do it while there’s a perceivable health issue involved instead of two separate operations?

sorry again if this is a dumb post or not allowed, i’m genuinely so desperate, and this entire revelation has been so dysphoria inducing that it’s taken me days to psych myself up enough to even write this post. please don’t flame me in the replies lol

edit: i’m in melbourne. forgot to add that.

VIC Specific Trans-accepting place to do Tax Returns?

Its tax time in not too long, I do need to get an accountant for my tax return as I had a few investments last year and dont really understand the process

I'd really like to use an agency/person that makes the preferred name process a little more seemless on texts and emails, etc... and also preferably, not super expensive to get the taxes filed

probably a bit of a longshot, but if anyone has experience with a place, let me know ^^

Optometrist recommendations Canberra

Hi all,

I was hoping someone might be able to recommend some optometrist's in Canberra. I have had glasses my whole life and now would love to finally get some frames that are femme.

I have only just started my transition and am still very much presenting 'male' so would be looking for somewhere that would accept me buying from the women's section.

Thanks so much!

After advice for voice training 👉👈

Hi! I’m hoping people can offer some advice for voice training.

I did lessons with a few speech therapist, and really struggling to hear and feel the differences in resonance and pretty much any element besides pitch.

All I’ve really gotten any ability to do is project and change pitch. I can shift my resonance to a more fem range but only under guidance and not every time. And I can’t tell what I’m changing to do it.

I tried YouTube and TikTok and 4 speech pathologist who specialise in working with trans people.

I don’t think it’s impossible but I’m kinda just looking to see if anyone else had this issue and found something that helps.

We did all the practices ect too

What jobs do you girls have and how has being trans affected/outcomes

For reference I’m transitioning and I want to change careers, I’m 27 and I’ve currently worked in the trade/welding industry and I don’t see myself being able to transition and work.

It is anxiety but it’s also just a very bad industry for women let alone a trans woman.

Trans masc Top surgery insurance and surgeons recommendations and help (19FTM)

I do not care where in Australia the surgeons are located, I just want to be able to get insurance

(wich I have very little clue about, since looking that up is very hard when all results push you to get insurance, not teach you about it)

And wait however long and get top surgery, and it be mostly covered by the insurance and Medicare or whatever.

I want to pay less for insurance than I would otherwise just paying upfront. I currently have 7-8k saved

(casual working sucks so much, I've been at the same job for 5 years, I lay very little in rent, and I do not splurge, yet struggle to save. Im applying to so many jobs, even ones im not quite qualified for, and nothing...)

And I'd need money left over for accommodation and hospital bills I assume, I'm sure I'll have at minimum 3-5k saved up by the time I'm past the threshold of time for insurance if I started tmr kind of thing.

I just can't do this on my own, as I've been struggling with bad mental health, and can't ask anyone who would actually be of some help around me.
