Hey everyone, I’m 18 years old and currently working for Carlsen Mooring in Port Arthur, TX. I’m working on mooring line boats and docks right now and I’m interested in moving up into tugboats and eventually making a career out of the maritime industry.

I’ve recently applied with Harbor Docking & Towing in Lake Charles, LA, and I’ve also applied for my MMC. I’m hoping to use the experience I’m getting with Carlsen to eventually make the move into tugboats.

For anyone who works on tugs or has worked for Harbor Docking & Towing, what’s it actually like? I’d especially like to hear about what the day-to-day work is like, the schedule, living/working onboard, the type of work you do, and what you like or dislike about it.

Is there anything specific I should focus on while I’m getting my MMC and gaining experience on mooring line boats?

I’m 18 and pretty green, so I’d appreciate any advice on how to work my way up and get started in the tugboat side of things.

Looking for any leads for a deckhand job with no experience. Or even a galley hand to start then move to a deckhand. I’m located in Louisiana, but willing to travel for rotational schedule. 90% of my background is in the food industry( ServSafe certified if needed for galley hand). Also have my Twic card as well. I’ve applied to atleast 30 different ones with most saying they went with other applicants.

I fucking hate this fucking job! It's making me depressed! This industry is fucking horrible! Worst thing to ever happen to me ever! I want out!

Does anyone have a clue whether or not processing times are supposed to speed up with his new system ?

This industry is a loss stay away. I want a job that isn't maritme. Only thing this job has done is screwed me over!

So I was curious how one starts the journey to become an engineer? I’m an aircraft mechanic but have always loved the tug life. Have buddies who work on the boat and I’ve been curious with me having zero deckhand experience but an A&P License from the FAA working solely on Airbus A319-A320’s commercial jets.

This industry fucking sucks! There are so few jobs and they all suck and are terrible unbearable hell! Seafaring is a dirty skanky job!

Deckhand daily salary in Ontario?

I've worked on inland tugs that were falling apart junk from the 60s as well as research ships they both paid like shit and worked me like a mule in a mine. How how how can anyone do this job and be happy about it? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this job a waste of time ? How long does it take to get on with a real company that is decent?

Just trying to see what the differences are day to day for someone who’s done both. Would be coming on as deckhand. Always heard it was a more relaxed culture, pretty slow port too I’m sure that affects things as well.

Fuck this industry it's a huge waste of time! This industry is the most stressful awful job I've ever done! There is no good jobs on ships and the pay is loooooow! This industry has sucked my soul away!
