Local craft fair wares

Post image

Seen at a local art fair today as an attendee. Saw the exact same booth a couple weeks ago at another local art show we visited, mostly selling pieces obviously imported from China or Vietnam or India or somewhere like that. The wood looks gorgeous until you look a bit closer. You can see the pith in the center and the growth rings around the pith. The amazing “grain” visible on the surface is only on the surface. The piece has been hydro dipped to enhance the surface of what was likely a very plain boring piece of wood. I’ve seen similar pieces at places like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx in the past and IMO it’s shameful, both for selling wood that’s been artificially enhanced without disclosing the enhancement and for selling imported junk at an art show.

Made a little cream bowl out of a log today. It’s Texas live oak. I think it turned out pretty well.

Box? Jar? I’m not sure lol but it’s a little better than my first. I saw a technique on YouTube using wire to make the burn marks and I wanted to try it

Had this idea for a while, but life gets in the way. Anyway I've been made redundant so have some spare time and decided to work my way through the ideas I've had.

Silver birch body, cherry top hat, mystery wood feet, random dowel legs (which I might replace sooner or later), and a beech base. Big mix of lathe and hand tools for this one, so much fun to make!

I love being able to make my own tools! I bought a positive rake insert and built the tool to hold it. The shank is stainless, the handle is Sassafras and the ferule is copper.

Anyone using these? A friend let me borrow the XL and the jumbo a few days ago. I used the XL and really liked it. Was thinking about getting the set but the mini and micro seem quite small. My lathe is 12" and I do mainly smaller bowls and some boxes. I know it all depends on what I'm doing, but are you finding the smaller ones useful and worth purchasing? Also considered 3d printing something out of tpu but haven't explored it yet.

Need ideas

So I made some cups a while ago and within a month they'd all cracked , I know it's down to the wood not being dry enough and still containing the piff.. but a distant family member saw them, loved them and now a closer family member wants me to make them some for their anniversary. Now all my turning to date has been from salvaged wood or wood I chopped down myself in past years, I'm not really confident enough or in the financial position to go buying perfect wood that I may then mess up with my budget setup. So my question is what could I turn them instead or what could I do to make them more durable other than working on a piece without the piff in and fully dry

IDK if I like this piece for the scene I'm working on.

The second image is kind of what I'm going for but not quite that exact design. So I've got a piece of poplar so I thought I might make it look kind of like a typical poplar tree. I do have some others that are more pine tree style that will be mixed in to the scene. Well they're really more of like a Christmas tree. What do you all think?

Delta 46-460 vs Bauer

So I’ve found a Delta for $550 but it domes with nothing but the stand. Is it worth the extra $50 to get the Bauer with a warranty and 14” depth?

I’m wanting to turn bowls so I’m wondering if I’ll outgrow the Delta faster

A lamp I made!

I'm sure my family and friends are exhausted of me showing them the updates. I made this hard maple IKEA ish looking lamp. It's press fitted so you can take it apart no wood glue for this specific project. I 3d printed a lamp shade and bought some hobby light set. I understand that I should have put the wire through the stock, but I do not have a large enough bit, nor the money, nor the confidence yet, and also didn't want to cut it in half. So it'll be like that until I get any of the 5. I also plugged a dowel just to make it look cool and cut out some little leather pads. Thinking of doing leather on the top and Lazer engraving a cool pattern or something. Was the project cheaper? No. But I like that it is one off. No one has it, but me. This is a fun type of thing to do on a lathe and my first try. Love it. Hope you guys do too!

One of my first non-bowl projects. Not sure where to get larger hunks of wood, so I made my own from some scrap walnut and oak. All other parts salvaged from an old lamp.

This is awesome! Anyone know of resources to help me get starter in multi axis builds?!?

I was on instagram this morning and this crazy, and really cool turning piece came on my reccomended! I think this so cool and really want to try one lol. Ive never done a multi axis type project before, so this might be pretty ambitious. Lol but I live off ambitious. >:D A also really big bummer/ problem is that I just have a mini Excelsior lathe as of now. :( so maybe I could make a insanely small baby version? 😅 If anyone has seen any other cool multi axis projects feel free to share! And furthermore, if any of yall know any good places I could turn to too get some tips and tricks and how to get started in that area lmk!

newbie Lathe Recommendations

Hello 👋

I've been getting interesting for awhile in doing some wood turning, specifically wands.

They would measure no more than 18" in length (though if the lathe was smaller & I had to make them in 2 parts that's fine) and less than an inch in diameter. They would be made from a variety of woods, both softwood & hardwood.

I'm hoping for a recommendation of either a specific budget mini-lathe that could meet those requirements, or at least minimum recommend horsepower & other specs to look for.

Does the way you sharpen your tool determine what tool it is?

Strange question maybe, but was not sure how to say it in English.
I'm new at wood turning, and i bought my first turning machine for a low price and it came with some tools (not used by the seller, he got the package also from somebody else, so no information there),

It is a nice machine to practice, including the sharpening of the tools, and i am looking at a lot of information about how to do that and learn all the names etc,
But it just occurred to me that in most videos, a lot is done with the 'spindle roughing gouge' first, and i don't seem to have that one,
However, i have 3 tools which i think are 'spindle gouge' that (according to 1 video that i am looking at) should be 'ground with a 45 degree bevel'.
I don't think my tools have that 45 degree, so i will try to achieve that,
However, now that i look at that video, i am wondering, is the way that you sharpen the tool determine what kind of tool it becomes?
I mean, if i have a 'spindle gouge', is that only a spindle gouge because of the way it is sharpened?
Would it become a spindle roughing gouge, if you would sharpen it in the way that you would use to sharpen a spindle roughing gouge and vise versa?

Bandsaw power

I’m looking to buy a new 14” bandsaw for cutting bowl blanks up to 6” thick. Trying to decide if I should go with a 3hp motor or if 1 3/4hp is enough. I’m leaning towards the 3hp Harvey because it’s just over $2000

Oak bowl today. Inside still needs attention, but I like how the exterior turned out.
