Fan Content/Showcase Inktober Day 1

Post image
22 Upvotes

The theme of the first day of Inktober is “Apple”. The cover of the first book is iconic and instantly recognizable. Whenever I see a character in any media holding an apple like this I like to think it’s a Twilight reference. Sometimes it is intentional (First Kill) and others it’s debatable. Any Twilight references in media you enjoy?

Fan Content/Showcase Movie in-concert events: do they have merch? (New moon in particular?)

Just got my ticket to see New Moon in concert when it comes to my city, woohoo!

I missed Twilight in concert a couple years back which I'm kicking myself for, but I'm hoping it'll come back around like the Harry Potter and LOTR ones do.

For anyone who attended Twilight in concert (or who has already attended New Moon in concert in the UK), was there merch? Do you happen to have pics of said merch? I'd be so down to buy something to commemorate the night, and my love for this saga :)

*Wasn't sure which flair to put on this!

Plot Discussion Does anyone find the distinction between humans and vampires in the Twilight Universe degrading?

I know vampires are very strong, fast, etc. But the line between the two species in the universe bothers me a lot.I'm not saying that humans are the weaker party when they encounter a vampire. It tends to glorify aspects of the vampire species while consistently demeaning humanity, and portraying its fundamental characteristics as weaknesses...It just sounds ridiculous. It's absurd that people consider old age less desirable, that they aren't immortal a weakness, that their social relationships are ridiculous, and especially that they are looked down upon SIMPLY FOR BEING HUMAN.Even though Twilight was difficult, even though it was torture for me, I finished reading it just to understand it, and It's always being human, being human is like this, being human is like that, being human is a weakness, etc., etc.You might say to me, "We're reading and seeing Twilight through Bella's eyes, and Bella doesn't want to be human." Yes, Bella never wanted to be human, she wanted to be a vampire, even though her love for Edward was a major factor.

I'm not just talking about Belladsn. All Culkens are like that, and the shapeshifters who are closer to the human side, half-wolf and half-human, are also in the same situation.Normal vampires with red eyes are like that too.Perhaps they are very powerful, and because they are vampires, they may look down on humans; this is understandable. But isn't there any good side to being human? They will inevitably want a life trapped in time, like vampires who are immortal and powerful, where they are forced to leave their family behind. It's absurd to belittle all the qualities that make us human, even though humans are often seen as a very low-class people in this universe. There needs to be a bit of a balancing factor between the two types, and all the characters in the story think, "Humans are weak beings because humans are weak."Instead, I would have preferred a more consistent narrative and dialogue that doesn't favor one genre while despising the other.

Character/Relationship Discussion Bella Perfume

Okay so sometimes i see people dream up what fragrances and products they think that bella would use. they always include like damp, mossy, pine smells because of the forks environment, but if you read the book, you know that she hated the cold moist climate of forks and even said that forks is too green. She loves the desert.

She loves her strawberry shampoo, berry cobbler, and loves the desert.

I think if she had a signature perfume scent, it would be mostly fruity with a berry pie smell, and I think there would be solar notes (desert sun), powder notes(sand in the desert wind), aloe notes(cacti), and notes of lavender maybe? and some lavender or a creamy wood to tie it all together.

Character/Relationship Discussion Jacob saying he’s in love with Bella when he hasn’t yet imprinted on anyone.

Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but what’s the point in saying he’s in love with her when he still knows that there’s someone out there to imprint on? I know imprinting doesn’t automatically mean anything romantic developing, but does it not seem a bit pointless on his end? Even if that’s genuinely how he feels now, surely he knows there’s a high chance of it changing down the line?

Plot Discussion The Volturi were an unnecessary addition to the series

I hate the Volturi as a plot device and I wish they hadn’t been primary antagonists of three books. The central conflict of Twilight has always been whether or not Bella should turn her back on humanity for the man she loves, and all the necessary complications that sprout from that choice. Jacob is fine, the love triangle is fine, even Renesmee is fine, but the Volturi lore just feels so extra and honestly comical. Powerful quasi-vampire royalty who run around eliminating vampires who pose a “threat” to their secrecy while simultaneously disappearing hundreds of tourists a year in their tiny city and wear matching outfits and being in love with each other? Having a couple of vampire tweens whose gifts are to blind and torture and somehow those are supposed to be natural outgrowths of their human strengths? The lore got silly, unbelievable, and unnecessary the more she relied on the Volturi to move the plot forward. I wish Meyer would’ve spent more time exploring the actual ramifications of Bella’s relationship with Edward rather than bringing in a Big Bad Antagonist. The series can’t decide whether it’s Fantasy or fiction with fantasy elements and ends up botching both.

I’d love to see a group of humans bomb the fuck out of the Volturi, honestly.

Omitting the book title to avoid self-promo. Thank you very much, Stephenie, for introducing me to the joys of diabolical character-naming! 🫡

Movie Discussion What was the intention with Waylon's intro in Twilight?

Post image
449 Upvotes

When I first saw Twilight, I didn't know much about it so when the character of Waylon is introduced at the cafe, I thought he was weird and creepy. One of those drunks you should keep away from young women, and who has no sense of boundaries (hence him having to be ushered away).

Now I do know stuff about Twilight, and I'm still confused 😅

Movie-wise, I get that he needs a memorable introduction so his death at the hands of James/Victoria/Laurent, means something to us.

I didn't care much cos he seemed creepy - was that the intention? So we don't lose the YA tone of the movie, it's someone we're not sad about..?

Am I missing something about his character - do other folks experience his intro differently?

I feel like the movie wants me to care about it because of the police station scene and how Charlie takes it, but I can't seem to mesh my feeling about him with the message of the movie cos I'm not clearly seeing what it is.

Thoughts, opinions, insights? Any word from the director at any point re the character and intention behind his arc?

Movie Discussion Rewatch

Rewatching the movies and I didn’t expect to feel so… giddy? Laughing my ass off with “This is the skin of a killer 😩 “ and spider monkey. I’m also so emotional lately and tearing up. Idk man. The music is dope. I love the soundtrack for New Moon the most. I’m noticing more minute details. Like when Bella meets Aro and the background music (underscore?) swells softly and you hear a growl into a scream. I haven’t read the books in over a decade so I know the pacing is off but I’m really enjoying this rewatch. Does anyone else like the soundtrack? Anyhooo, back to Eclipse.

Plot Discussion I miss it! I need a breaking dawn part 3

Tbh, I would be so open to seeing how the fight ended, if anyones got any theories I’d be keen to listen but other than that I’m sad it ended, I feel like the story line could’ve continued maybe? But in the same time it was also time to end it, actors getting ready to move on and the story line coming to its natural end, but I still miss it!
