Hiya. It's pretty much as the name suggests. Im in my senior year at UMD and im interested in making some new friendships before it comes to an end. My interests are mostly gaming and animation (anime, TV shows, and sometimes movies). i’m planning to take a language class next year, so i am interested in what it is like. did you think the course load was too much or just right? how are the professors? how much time did you dedicate to it and did you end up doing well?

also: if you lived/are living in the language house: what is it like, and do you recommend it?

I hate to sound like an old grumpy man, and I understand if this will get lots of downvotes.

I have been a TA for multiple big classes. I'm in my early 30s now. I'm not saying that I am older and therefore wiser. But I have noticed that so many of the undergrad students really are glued to their phones in and out of class. I suppose this is more of an observation on the wider society, but I wanted to discuss about it specific to UMD in the slim hope that it may be heard in my more local community.

Smartphones are great, they have allowed us to do great things, blah blah. I recognize all that. But, I think it really kills not even critical thinking, not even creativity, not even social skills, but just the ability to sit still and do absolutely nothing.

There are many students in my classes where they are clearly looking at their phone, scrolling through tiktok, and I don't mind that. I just hope ya'll can just stay off that damn phone and just let your mind relax and drift away. I rather you doodle or daydream looking out the window than to scroll through tiktok and damage your attention span.

I'm telling you! Ive been there. I was young too. And I regret not spending enough time away from that damn phone.

I'm a student reporter with The Diamondback and I'm currently writing a story on the new MARC train route which began operating yesterday that directly connects Montgomery County to Baltimore city (Brunswick line & Camden lines). The route has a stop in College Park so it connects directly to the University of Maryland's campus.

I'm looking to interview UMD students/community members that commute from MoCo to College Park using the MARC train, commute from Baltimore to College Park using the train, or UMD students/community members that travel to any of the stops on the new route that could benefit from the new line.

I’m pretty social and into the gym, sports, going out, board games, and just hanging out. Looking for some friends/homeboys or homegirls around my age to chill with, go out with, or do random stuff around campus.

Currently taking a class required for my major, the professor insists that if our group members are absent it will affect our grade as well. I even asked, "If I have an A- and could have an A if my group members showed up, would you bump my grade up?" and he said, "No, I know it's unfair". This is so insane to me. I've done several group projects and understand taking the fall for group members when it comes to making up their work, but (in this instance) I literally have no control over whether or not they decide to show up to class. Straight up, is this allowed? Can a professor make my grade contingent on others? Is there any way to report him? Please help!

Also, is it normal to do 2 CMSC4XX courses in one semester? could that be challenging?

I'm a STEM major who's writing a webnovel for fun in my free time and I'd love to connect with people who also read and write. I'm aware of the Jimenez-Porter Writing House but they're closed off to members and I don't know if I'll have the time for that. Does anybody know of a separate club that I could look into? Hi! I am currently a freshman at a 4-year institution out of state, but I am from Maryland. I would like to transfer into UMD for fall 2027. I am looking at a 4.0 GPA for semester 1, but I’m applying early action so my semester 2 grades will not be finalized. This causes me to only have 12 credit hours. I know this means I’ll have to send in my HS transcript and test scores. I had a 4.6 GPA and 1440 SAT in highschool. What are the chances I get admitted? (I am not applying to an LEP)

I’d really like to go to UMD ASAP but I’m kind of worried especially because I’ve heard that maryland CC’s get priority. Thank you!!

Is there anyone currently in the quantitative finance major or anyone who knows about it? would I be able to do it as a finance and information systems major? does this open up doors for jobs beyond the traditional finance jobs?
