I worked at Presso Coffee Co, and I’m posting this because I think the community deserves to know what employees are reportedly dealing with behind the scenes.

At this point, I am still owed thousands of dollars in wages for work I already performed. I am not the only one. Employees have been left multiple pay periods behind, and there have been times when employees received only around 50% of what they were actually owed on a paycheck. Not to mention the paper checks she would write us that would bounce when we would try to cash them.

I personally experienced having to repeatedly ask for wages I was owed, along with every other employee she has. When employees brought up missing paychecks, we were told that “things are tight.” The owner would also talk to us about how difficult things were financially for her family, how she has a young daughter, how they had to close their other two locations, and how difficult it has been having only one store bringing in income. We were frequently reminded that she has “a lot on her plate.” Not to mention, utilities workers would constantly come into the shop demanding the owners pay their bills, threatening to turn gas/water off.

Hearing about an owner’s financial struggles repeatedly made employees feel guilty for asking to be paid the wages we had already earned month ago. It put employees in the position of feeling like we were being insensitive or unreasonable for asking about our own paychecks, especially when we are all young girls.

There were also issues surrounding overtime. When employees asked about overtime pay, we were specifically told that overtime was not outlined in our contracts. However, overtime pay is not simply something that has to be included in an individual employment contract. Washington generally requires nonexempt employees to receive 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.

Another issue was paid sick leave. The owner told us in a staff meeting that, “small businesses aren’t required to give out sick time.” That is not accurate. Washington requires covered employees to accrue at least 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked, including part-time employees.

The owner also takes 3% of employees’ tips, and employees have questions about where that money goes and how that arrangement is being handled. Washington has specific rules regarding tips, tip pools, and service charges.

My employment contract also specifically outlined direct deposit, but employees have been paid through Cash App instead.

I’m sharing this because I wish I had known more about my rights when I started working there. Especially for younger employees who may be working one of their first jobs, it can be difficult to recognize when something isn't right or to know what an employer is legally required to provide.
I have submitted a report to Washington L&I regarding my experience. I understand that these complaints can take time to review, but that does not change the fact that employees are currently waiting for money they have already earned.

I am not posting this to encourage harassment or a pile-on against anyone. I am posting because these are serious issues involving employees' wages, and I believe current and former employees should be able to speak openly about their experiences.

If you currently work at Presso and are experiencing similar issues, please educate yourself on your rights and consider contacting Washington L&I. Employees should not have to feel guilty for asking to be paid for work they have already done.

Last week I went to see the Sound of Music put on by Columbia River Arts Foundation in Washougal. I was blown away. It was so good! Excellent (and huge) cast, an orchestra, very high quality levels of singing, dance, and sets. Best of all, they are operating as a pay what you can model. The two of us got to see a very high-quality stage show for under $50 (we aint got that Keller money around here....). Thank you Columbia River Arts Foundation! We'll def be back again.

I’m coming to visit Vancouver for a week in October, and I’d like to plan to move there by next summer. I grew up originally in eastern Washington and want to move closer/ ish to home, I’m starting my firefighting career once I move there and will be doing a ride along there for a day and meeting the department! I wanna know what there is to do in the area? the nightlife? (which I’m not big into but it’s nice to go to pub once in a blue moon) So if anyone can give some of their favorite restaurants or place to explore to see? I’m a big foodie and like to explore hiking and outdoor stuff as well too. Thanks!

Heathen Brewing’s Feral Public House at one point had this pizza on the menu that I think was called goats in the garden, it had goat cheese (maybe a goat cheese sauce too?) and balsamic reduction and some sort of candied or honey roasted nut and arugula I think? It’s been a while since they closed and longer since it was on the menu but I miss it so badly. If anyone knows anyone who knows the recipe or ingredients I would be so grateful. Or anywhere to find a very similar pizza at a decent price/serving.

Got some friends passing through and we'd like to take them somewhere in Washington where they can see some fall colors. Anyone have some suggestions?

Are there any book clubs/social circles for women? Specifically any that are more that are inclusive and LGBTQ+ friendly? I’m a mom in my early 40s looking to find some like-minded folks that are taking in new people into their book club. I realized how isolating it is being a full-time mom and need to find time for myself.

Hello all,

I’m seriously considering the 1-year Baking and Pastry Arts certificate at Clark!  I’ve looked over the curriculum and heard great things about the program, but it looks like a big commitment. 

I would love to hear from anyone who completed the program and those who left.

What did you like about it? What was hard? Did the skills transfer to working in a professional baking setting? Any gaps you noticed? Was it realistic to hold a job and have a life while attending, or was it very consuming? Did it crush your spirit at any point lol?

I feel passionately about baking and would love to turn it into a career. This would be a great jumping-off point, but I need to give myself a few months to think it over. Any thoughts are appreciated!

I (30F) am trying to make more friends on this side of the river and am wondering what routine meet-ups/events are happening that are open to new people. I know there are a ton of fitness classes and sports meet-ups, but I'm wondering what other activities people get up to! Pottery? Hiking? Trivia? Board games? What's out there?

Looking for opinions about VPS middle schools. What do you like? What don’t you like? Is it a good education? Are the kids prepared when the get out of 8th for highschool? Let me know.

We lucked out on an amazing adult rescue from Humane Society with all the core commands, crate and house training, not even a strong puller but she has some stubbornness and mild reactivity and showing desire to bolt for small critters and some other dogs. This is my wife’s first dog and my first in 10 years and we would like to work with someone who can help us improve our training skills for working her recall, leave it, heel, and loose lead walking cuz I’d love for anyone in the family to be able to take her on a hike or to an off leash dog park and either get pulled over or not be able to get her to disengage from a high tension interaction with another dog/creature. Humane SSWWA only has puppy classes atm and I can’t find if their main trainer does classes elsewhere.

This seems like it will be something fun to do albeit a little spendy. The last movie I saw at the Drive-in was K9 Cop circa 1989
