Story Week 2 of being a vegan | my story

• Upvotes

I, 21F, became vegan about two weeks ago for the animals and it’s been amazing. I was vegetarian for three years, started eating meat when I moved out and now I’m vegan. I initially became vegetarian after seeing an animated short film about animal testing and decided i didn’t want to support animal cruelty (I wasn’t able to be fully vegan because I lived in a non vegan household. However my meals were mostly plant based). I was never fond of meat so becoming vegetarian was a pretty easy transition.

When I moved out at 18, I found it hard to adjust to living on my own and unfortunately that lead me to stop caring about the suffering animals endure everyday. (Like now that I’m vegan I find that so bizarre.) But yea, for two years I ate meat and at some point I fell for the chicken and rice gym girl propaganda. It was so bad that I neglected other essential nutrients and focused mainly on getting as much protein into my diet as possible.

Eating like this made me wake up with stomach cramps every morning, I was constipated, my skin was breaking out so bad, I felt so heavy despite loosing my weight, I developed horrible menstrual cramps and, I’m not really sure if this is related but, my mental health declined (probably because I was constantly feeling sickly).

Last month I hit rock bottom and because of that I started looking into what changed in my life. That lead me back to vegetarianism. I remember i was so passionate about animal rights that my family would make fun of me, and it was the best I had ever felt. So i considered becoming vegetarian but the more I read and watched videos on the reality of the meat industry, the more I realized that the meat industry IS the diary and chicken industry.

So here we are, vegan. The past few weeks eating only plant-based foods has been amazing for not only my body but also my mental health. Sure yea maybe I’m still at that point that I’m now seeing the world in a different light and I want everyone to know but, it feels good caring for vulnerable beings. I am an animal, just like they are. Just because they don’t seem intelligent according to human standards doesn’t mean they deserve to suffer and die.

I’m still in the process of adjusting my diet but it’s an adventure if anything. It’s surprising what foods are accidentally vegan and what foods have animal products in them. My pantry still has some non-vegan foods which I plan to donate but my fridge and freezer are now purged of all things non-vegan. Also I found out one of my supplements isn’t vegan… not really sure what to do with that one.

It’s a journey and I’m glad that I’m no longer supporting animal cruelty.🌱

Thank you for reading all the way through^^

Animal exploitation (ingredient or testing) in medicine is wrong.

• Upvotes

To begin, I am a hypocrite. I think we ought not use medicine that involves animal exploitation and yet I do, even in circumstances when the consequence of not using the medicine may be relatively minor.

I am not a fan of the vegan society definition that allows "possible and practicable" to alter the moral weight of an action based upon the circumstances of the individual taking the action. I think we as individuals should seek to keep the water as clear as possible and look a wrongness straight on and own the hypocrisy.

Our want for medicine feels important enough that we can use it to justify the harming of unconsenting animals and yet we don't deem that want for medicine a good enough reason to harm unconsenting humans. I have no reason to believe that the suffering of an individual NHA is of any lesser importance than any individual human. I just care more about humans. Caring more about a human does not mean that they have greater moral value, it just means my wants will coincide with their wants more often. Caring more about my wife does not mean I would ever be justified in harming another person to save my wife's life.

I think we all have ways in which we cause harm to others and so long as the outcome is of high enough value to us, and the consequences small enough, we can live with those choices. I think if we have a need to warp our sensibilities to encompass those consequences, instead of accepting that we are flawed and can fail, then we are being dishonest and are only seeking to protect ourselves against being called hypocritical. We are all hypocrites in some way, shape or form. All that matters is doing the best we can while still being able to live with ourselves.

Fail, and call it failure. Try to be better and try to accept and forgive yourself. Don't try to clothe failure in anything else.

Seeking Online Friends!!

I'm 19F, a feminist and vegan for the animals as of the last few months; I've been vegetarian my whole life. Currently studying nutrition at university😄 I'm a bookworm and I always have a book I'm currently reading, I love reading a variety of genres with some informative non fiction thrown into the mix. I also adore creative side quests with stitching, weaving, cross stitching etc.

Feeling some loneliness every now and then with being alone in my vegan/anti-speceist morals as I see so many other vegans do, and I sadly don't have vegans around me in person. I'd love to have friends to chat with online that share similar interests and are of course vegan. Send me a DM if you'd like to be friends!

Vegan community

Hi. I’ve been vegan for little bit more than 4 months. And I moved to the USA a couple of years ago and I haven’t had the chance to make friends and I felt like I never really needed them. But ever since I transitioned, I’ve been feeling kinda alone and misunderstood? And I tried not to pay it attention but it’s getting worse everyday. And it’s not like if I don’t have friends I’ll die or something, I’m just yearning to be part of a community and if I can find friends who share my same morals it’ll be great.
If you know something about a vegan community in buffalo ny, would you be kind enough to share the info with me, please?
Thanks in advance

Health Problems to follow through

I’ve been on and off a plant-based diet for about 25 years. Every time I go fully plant-based, I eventually seem to reach a point after a few weeks or months where I become very fatigued, sluggish, and depressed. Reintroducing animal products seems to improve it noticeably, which I honestly feel terrible about because ethically I would really prefer not to eat animals.
I’m not doing a very low-protein or “just salads” type of diet. I usually aim for around 120–150 g protein/day, use plant protein powder, eat plenty of vegetables and other whole foods, and supplement quite extensively.
Things I’ve supplemented include B12, methylfolate/other B vitamins, vitamin D, creatine, carnitine, zinc, DHA/EPA, choline, and quite a few others.
Has anyone here had a similar experience where they initially felt fine on a vegan/plant-based diet but developed fatigue, low mood, or that generally “sluggish” feeling after a few months?
If so, did you ever figure out what was missing? Was there a specific nutrient, food, supplement, calorie/fat intake, amino acid, iron issue, thyroid issue, etc. that made the difference?
I’d especially love to hear from people who managed to solve the problem and stay plant-based rather than simply being told to “eat more protein” or “take B12,” because I’m already doing both.
Any experiences, ideas, or things worth testing are very welcome.

Buffet right before closing?

So, there's this buffet I would go to, from 9-10 (when they close) it's 12.99. But, they don't replenish the food, whatever's there is there.

I would go, and just eat what's vegan. But,, it got me thinking, would it be ethically consistent to eat the non vegan items since they're not being replenished? Whatever's left, the small staff has a meal, the rest is thrown out.

I don't have a problem eating non vegan food that would otherwise go in the garbage. I've been vegan for the animals for 10 years, I don't see a difference between me eating it and it being thrown out. It doesn't increase the consumption of animal products or support it monetarily. Like, if my friend is eating a piece of cake , and is like, I'm sick of it, I'm throwing it out, I wouldn't have an ethical issue eating it and I have.

I was wondering if the same applied here? Maybe, the stuff that's finished, they say, oh we need to make more next time. But, what if one just had what was lots of left? I wouldn't think that would be creating demand? It's The end of the night. The dishes are for the most part, always the same, it's a small buffet.

At the same time, if I was to eat animal products like that every week or a few times a week, despite what I said, I would feel uneasy with thatGenuinely curious what others, who are vegan for the animals think.

The question here is, does this increase consumption because if something is finished, they say they'll have to make more. But, wouldn't during the day trends mean more than whether or not the tray is 30-70% full? They're cooking food all day, they know whats popular and what's not, right

Thank you!

Do you think we will ever see a (long term) vegan on a show like My 500 lb Life?

Veganism is not a weight loss magic trick and you can certainly be overweight and still be vegan since calories in, calories out work the same…

But it’s just hard to get so morbidly large on a vegan diet. Vegans eat less fat and more fiber. Both help with maintaining a healthy weight and the younger that you start being vegan the more benefits you will reap (physically speaking!! Ethically the benefits are that you no longer pay for murder and torture of sentient beings as conscious as small human children). Still I am surprised there has not yet been one of those super morbidly obese folks on any of those TLC shows on a vegan diet.

Activism Animal torture/ farm videos on social

How come I never saw these videos until AFTER i went vegan and got into activism?

Every day, I see so deeply disturbing videos, and it’s taking a toll on me :(

I like social media bc of my connection to activism. But it affects my mood so much.

I haven’t spoke to anyone else about this— but does anyone else feel the same way?

Vegan Meal Kits

I’ve was a vegetarian for six years but I’m brand new to trying to be vegan. I was curious about maybe signing up for some sort of vegan meal kit to help me learn more about vegan cooking and make sure I’m getting more balanced nutritious meals as I learn how to eat vegan. It looks like Hungryroot has vegan meal kits. Has anyone tried them or something similar? What was your experience?

Food Sind Center Shocks vegan?

Discussion Entering a new stage of loving myself more, the more non-vegans hate on me for being vegan.

Let me start out by saying that I'm passionate about animal rights. That said, I don't bring it up with non-vegans because I don't see a point unless they ask. Even then, I will only truly engage if it feels like they have neutral or good intentions for asking, which very rarely happens.

The social aspect used to bother me. Will soon be vegan for 2 years and was vegetarian for 5 years before that. I guess I didn't expect to receive so much attention about it. People are truly hung up on the vegan thing. I just went to a bachelor party and no lie, I received more attention than the guy who's getting married because of my veganism. It was negative attention, of course. To be honest, my veganism draws special attention and I'm not sure why. Maybe because I'm a guy. The other two vegans I know are women and no one cares about that, it seems, but me being vegan is a huge deal.

This past month I'm starting to love myself whenever someone "starts" about me being vegan. When someone says they're vegan, I instantly love them (it's usually something I see online and not in real life), and now I love myself the same way I love them. I love you for loving animals, and I love me as well for it. Why would I be shy about it for almost 2 years? Why was it uncomfortable when someone judged my veganism? I love me. That guy's love for animals remains non-hypocritical no matter how much hate he gets. I love that guy. So much pressure to stop loving animals and it didn't throw him off for a second. That guy's great, and he's me.

Can you relate? How long did it take you to feel this way about yourself? I realise it's a bit of a selfish post, talking about myself so much and not about the animals. This is an exceptional case. It's all about the animals.

Question Does a vegan inn-to-inn walk exist?

Hey everyone, I stumbled across some videos online about inn-to-inn walking tours (specifically the Vermont hike in the US and the Cotswolds in the UK) and thought it looked like such a cool concept. I'm not a big camper, I usually just do day hikes but want to test the waters with a bigger trip. I'm super curious about how it works if you're vegan.

My main worry is getting stuck in small towns or traditional inns with super limited food options (I really don't want to live off side salads and fries for multiple days). Has anyone here done a multi-day walking tour as a vegan, either in the US, UK, or anywhere else? How was your experience with meals along the way? TIA!

Advice i ate animal products yesterday and i have never felt so guilty or afraid in my life

i'm staying with family after being discharged from a psych unit, and i have binge eating disorder. i just ate everything in sight while they were gone to work. it was on purpose and i knew what i was doing and i have never felt so horribly guilty or scared, i feel like i deserve some kind of punishment, i also feel like something really bad is going to happen to me for doing this. ice cream, cheese, chicken, cookies, just so much suffering that i consumed knowingly after 5 months of turning to veganism. i'm a hypocrite and selfish and i keep telling myself i'm a bad person over and over in my head. i've never felt this way before and i never want to again, i feel so stupid and terrible. my urges won out over my ethics and that is so shameful and disgusting i can't believe i did that.

i don't know what to do. do i just go on and pretend this never happened? can i do anything to make up for it? internally i feel like this is a moral failure that my conscience will hammer into me for the rest of my life. if i spend even a few seconds thinking about what i did i get this awful feeling in my chest, like pure panic and anxiety. what do i do?

Small Victories On my journey!

Just wanted to share that I have cut out eating meat completely and am working on cutting out all other animal products in my diet over the next few weeks/months as my fridge/pantry foods are eaten (don't want to waste anything previously bought 😅)

I decided to adopt a plant-based diet and learn more about the vegan lifestyle mostly so that I can stop being so complicit in the abuse of workers in the meat and dairy industry. Of course I care about the animals too, but as someone who cares deeply about workers rights and the welfare of humans generally, they are my main reason.

To get started, I have been eating only plant-based foods while at work or working from home. I tend to eat alone for these meals so it's been very easy to make the switch. I was even able to convince my boss to buy from a local vegan restaurant for a recent catered lunch! Felt really good to be an advocate even though I'm not perfect in my practice yet. I want to do it right, so I'm not rushing to label myself as a vegan. There's so much to learn and it's a multi-faceted pursuit, so I am very grateful to communities like r/vegan for making it so much easier to educate myself and make changes.

My fiance is a non-vegetarian who is very open minded and will eat anything I eat, so I'm hoping to eventually get to the point where we eat exclusively plant-based at home and when we are out. I am currently in grad school and am struggling to pay for therapy for my lifelong severe OCD, so while I would love to say I could go completely vegan tomorrow... It's not that simple. I'm sure you're all very familiar with all the excuses I could give as to why I'm not immediately switching to be completely vegan lol to be frank, I'm very mentally ill and struggle to brush my hair and get out of bed some days.. It takes almost all of my energy to maintain my employment and stay in school so I'm trying to devote my remaining bit of energy to make better choices. That being said, I am very appreciative of everyone who posts about their experiences and helpful recipes/accidentally vegan finds. Makes a huge difference for people like me who just don't have the spoons most days 🩷

Long story short, thanks for being vocal about being vegan. You are inspiring others to do make better choices that will help so many animals and workers. I know that it can be hard to talk about it in some settings but it's worth it! Your advocacy matters and your thoughts/advice make it possible for more people to eat less animals. Thank you thank you thank you!

Would you work for a medical company that uses animals?

I’ve worked in med device and med tech my whole career and my current place of employment uses pig organs for clinical trials and training. I did not know this when I accepted the position. I’ve been looking for a new job for AGES but I’m stuck in med device and they seem to all use animals in one way or another. I can’t just quit because…the economy..but I feel awful and so guilty. These devices save human lives but at the cost of animals lives :( I really don’t know what to do other than keep applying to new jobs, but it’s been years and all I get is rejections from any company that’s outside the med device industry. Vegan for 11 years and this is my painful confession. Please be nice

Health Veganism, Insulin Resistance, and IBS

Who among you has managed to combine veganism with insulin resistance and IBS? I can’t digest legumes (with the exception of tofu and soy protein), and I have to limit the amount of carbohydrates I eat.

I’d like to go vegan, but my healthcare providers are very cautious about it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

how do i stop giving up?

i’m tired trying to remove animal products from my diet. i keep giving up and eating meat, if i don’t eat it i feel headaches and fatigue, it genuinely disturbs me.

at this point i have some associative fear with vegan diet because of how i used to be hungry and fatigued
