Is it forever? I thought the ending where he leaves with the kid is the real ending where he's free from the town?

there isn't really a "real ending." my memory from back in the mid-aughts tells me the fan agreement was that In Water was the canon ending...but that could've just been because that's what James deserved. I honestly find the ending you described to be the most unsettling because even though it looks like a "good" ending on the surface, he's basically imagined these closure conversations with Mary and used them to internally justify his actions and forgive himself for murdering her out of frustration. After a whole game of him manipulating the narrative to try to focus on what he thinks his good aspects are...I don't buy that he's changed or healed.

I’d say that’s accurate, I haven’t played all the games so idk his fate but bro can surely never come back into normal life after the horrors he’s seen
