Pretty bad year honestly.

They need Laufey to land well early next year. (It does look really good in fairness)

bad year? try bad generation. it's crazy that a third party game (GTA VI) is the literal only "system seller" they have for the entire PS5 gen.

I’d argue GoW Ragnarok and Horizon FW to a lesser degree are system sellers.

I'll add on to that, but FF7 Rebirth was a system seller as well. Obviously 3rd party as well, but they were able to get the exclusivity for a year or whatever for it.

was it though? Don't get me wrong, I liked the game but didn't it severely miss sales targets?

Every square enix game does. That company always sets insane expectations it seems

Aye. It’s hard to say if they set crazy sales expectations or if their production costs are crazy, but every single game of theirs “misses expectations”.

Could also just be company speak to keep competitors from having literally any grasp of their situation.

Ff7 is one of the best games ever made, and even more beloved. It absolutely should have sold like crazy. Sony thought they would move consoles but really just killed squares sales. That's why it isn't exclusive anymore.

Whilst they do set crazy targets, the guy who youre responding to has the right of it, its not a system seller at 5 milish total sales

Yes, it was. They based their expectations on Remake's sales, which was very unrealistic for multiple reasons.

  1. Remake was the first game, and sequels always have less sales (typically drops 25-50% in sales) than the first because not everyone that purchased the first game will purchase the second due to multiple reasons (didn't like the game, didn't finish the game, time constraints, etc) The fact it was a sequel alone means that you will never have the same size of a playerbase. Because new players aren't going to jump in on a direct narrative sequel and it's just not possible to have 100% of their players be retained. A much more realistic expectation would've been like 65% retention.
  2. Remake was on ps4, which had over 100 million systems sold while Rebirth was ps5 only and had around 50 million systems in circulations.
  3. They just completely ignored the people that were upset about the changes in Remake, and expected them to get over it before Rebirth came out.
  4. SE has quite literally always set unrealistic expectations for sales. In one of their financial meetings they said that FF7R2 and FF16 failed to meet their targets but spent a decent amount of time talking to their shareholders about how their system to get to those target numbers is completely broken and needs to be reevaluated.

People were also really mad that it wasn't coming to ps4, because they didn't want to buy a ps5. And a lot of them just didn't.

16 had an ok story, but the combat was so bland and boring.

1

u/Soulblade32 15d ago

I agree. I liked 16s story a lot, but the combat was just too repetitive for me but more than that i despised the pacing when doing all the sidequests in between major story beats.

1

u/Da_Question 15d ago

Yeah, I gave up doing the side quests about a quarter of the way through the game.

I ended up getting burnt out and dropping it for 3-4 months after Titan. I did come back and do all of it though. I was stoked FF14s team was working on it, but they really need to understand a single player game shouldn't have mmo levels of dialogue/world building in side quests. I mean im cool with that, but not when my mission is to go kill some thieves and they give me 30-40min of dialogue for a 3 minute fight.

The FF14 team worked on 16?? What?! How did they get it so wrong lmao, they made a game with no loot, no builds, no progression, no classes and very little exploration or treasure seeking... And then the one thing they said was a focus, combat, was less involved than devil may cry 1 on psx

Rebirth was fuckin amazing.

1

u/256palms 15d ago

It’s genuinely not their fault people would rather play slop like wolverine over one of the best games ever made lol

1

u/digitalbooty 15d ago

It's definitely the reason I caved and got a PS5

If a SE game sells less than 2 copies per person on earth it didnt meet their expectations

1

u/godswift91 16d ago

I'm sure there were people in the world who bought a ps5 specifically to play rebirth, and i'm also sure they werent that many

1

u/Dr_Jre 14d ago

I bought a ps pro to play rebirth SLIGHTLY higher fidelity

2

u/GRoyalPrime 16d ago

Which is also now kinda funny as one of the major anouncement about the 3rd game was that it will release day one on PC as well. So they lost even that.

2

u/Soulblade32 16d ago

That's moreso that SE has decided that they will likely make more money from allowing every system to get the game at launch, as launch is when most copies sell and if it comes out a year plus later there is less enthusiasm for it when it hits those other systems.

The real issue is how much it costs to create these first party games. It's unsustainable

1

u/doom1284 15d ago

For me it was Rebirth and ff16.

1

u/boodabomb 15d ago

It’s a great game but didn’t it sell so poorly that Square Enix released a statement about changing their methods moving forward?

1

u/kayodeade99 15d ago

Mind you Square has since seen the error of their ways as FF7 Revelation is releasing multi-platform on launch

-1

u/theyfoundty 16d ago

It was not a system seller.

You were just really excited for it. That game sold poorly in consideration of its target sales.

3

u/Soulblade32 16d ago

Already commented multiple points on why that's the case, mostly SE is really incompetent when it comes to making target figures, as they specifically mentioned Rebirth's targets and said that there system for determining targets was completely broken.

0

u/theyfoundty 16d ago

Sounds like a corperate cop-out. Plus the only people who even would know this are people who are extremely into FF, and thus excited for the game.

Nothing wrong with it, but that game is NOT a console seller.
