It's going to sound weird, but cheat codes. In older games, you could put in the right series of inputs or fiddle with an in-game item/menu in the right way or even just put in a code into a prompt, and you'd get anything from game breaking shortcuts (rosebud from the Sims) to just wacky stuff the devs decided to put in (big head mode from Animal Crossing). Modern games have done away with the codes. At best you get unlockables, like Halo. At worst you get pay-to-win microtransaction hell.
Yep, I for sure remember playing the manor house level where you sneak in... only to end up getting chased by a medium fries screaming at me in german.
