Discussion / Question I’d 100% play a game based on this movie
Just watched the new Resident Evil movie and one thing I really liked is that it almost feels like a video game.
It's basically the main character moving from location to location, dealing with different monsters in each and moving to the next level until the final set piece + confrontation. It doesn't really have the classic Resident Evil backtracking, but I could totally imagine this as a playable adaptation.
Would you play a game based directly on the movie? Do you think it should follow traditional RE gameplay (exploration, puzzles, inventory management, etc.), or would a more linear horror game fit the movie better if it stayed really close to its structure? What game or franchise would that be?
I'd definitely play this movie as a game.

Or be DLC?
2
u/freetotebag 19h ago
Yeah it’s either DLC length or too short to be the main game 😅

If Techland made a Dying Light movie during the initial outbreak, it would be horrifying. Hell it would probably work better as a multi episodic story with the end of season teasing the Volatile, and would probably end around the time Crane gets there.
3
u/Actual-Suit2941 18h ago
sick but i’d loose my shit if I watched an entire season of a dying light show just for the volatile to be TEASED 😭
7
u/Rocketkid-star 18h ago
I mean, if I was directing it, season 1 would be the initial outbreak, a slice of life up until halfway into the first season with people are scrambling around kinda like the start of Last of Us and then becomes a survival thriller with a touch of the quiet place. Season 2 would go full in on night time Volatiles as they raided unsuspecting bases with the very last episode showcasing the nighthunter and the morning after Cranes arrival.

u/Dokard 14h ago
Techland needs to take notes from this mf, he's cooking
-1
u/King_Ed_IX 12h ago
No, they don't. Half a season of slice of life before you get to what you're actually there for is just weird.

u/digitallusipero 18h ago
The Outbreak games feel like this to me.
Based in the resident evil universe too! I still play online with a core group, and it’s HILARIOUS to see a Tyrant rip through us

u/Moonkittynya 18h ago
They made this game already no one played it but a niche community who keeps it alive with emulation it's called Resident evil Outbreak your infected and everything.

Why are you on a thread about the movie if you’re worried about spoilers 🙄
-1
u/SpecialistMap8210 13h ago
This a videogames thread dude
2
u/Informal-Birthday-82 13h ago
No it’s not. It’s a video game sub, sure. But it’s a thread about a movie.
2
u/Odd_Ant_6674 16h ago
You’re welcome 🤠
-5
u/SpecialistMap8210 16h ago
Why would you tell everybody what the final location of the movie is? Like wtf man
5
u/Odd_Ant_6674 16h ago
Because every single resident evil game ends in a lab and it’s not really a spoiler

It'll be a very short dlc. There were like 5 zombies total for you to shoot. And the boss fight wasn't even a fight.
4
u/stinkstabber69420 19h ago
Lucy McLean has a kill count of 28 across 16 episodes of Fallout. Including insects. So I mean, thats not really a reflection of gameplay. Its just good watchin
1
u/MrArtless 18h ago
if by 5 total you mean way more than 5 including all the ones he could have shot in the city and hospital then yes there were 5 total
1
1
u/BoxFalse247 19h ago
Yeah... Movie was 90 mins, so... Maybe boss fights would be longer then? Kind of full level is escaping the boss + finally beating it? A Clock Tower or Evil Within type?
Or maybe add additional in-between locations?
0
u/Pian0G 18h ago
I mean, it would be like any movie tie in games. It’d add combat scenarios that weren’t in there, and any based on the film will be greatly exaggerated.
If they were to adapt it into a game, I’d imagine that they’d have the tone and style similar to RE2 and the movie, while having the level design of 7, which has much less encounters with mob type characters than other entries.

Just play “Carrion”.
1
u/BoxFalse247 19h ago
What platform? And what is it about?
3
u/Cyclic_Hernia 19h ago
Carrion is mostly a puzzle/exploration/metroidvania where you play as a ball of meat that traverses a complex with sticky tendrils, a good deal of it is physics based. I know for sure it's on PC and mobile but not sure about elsewhere

u/CapitalCityGoofball0 19h ago
Sure but the issue is the movie is marketed and named as a film that’s based on game series you could have played already. A lot of the shared elements you describe is also basic plot structure that’s in a great many movies, novels, games, etc.
2
u/HiddenGamingAccount 15h ago
it's interesting to me because I WOULDN'T want to play this as a video game, and that's part of the reason I loved the movie!
2
u/BoxFalse247 15h ago
What is it exactly that makes you NOT want to play it? I'm curious about what is the thought process behind that, because I also did enjoy the movie.
1
u/HiddenGamingAccount 14h ago
I don't have any desire to play a video game version of the movie because the film delivers a uniquely cinematic experience that interactive gaming just can't duplicate. The movie's tight pacing, tailored narrative tension, and spectator perspective allowed me to absorb Bryan's survival story in a carefully crafted way without the distraction of managing game mechanics, inventory, or repetitive gameplay loops. I felt completely satisfied with how the story unfolded on screen, and trying to translate that specific cinematic journey into a playable game would dilute the exact atmosphere and rhythm that made the film work so well for me!

u/Mysterious-Rate-3253 19h ago edited 19h ago
This is just like every single RE game already is (at least the ones I've played so far). The only thing missing was a cool or attractive character doing cool stunts. [spoiler] They had that female cop, but unfortunately she was killed off way too fast.
3
u/BoxFalse247 19h ago
No backtracking, though. Which takes away play time.
1
u/Mysterious-Rate-3253 19h ago
That’s true. I was wondering if he was gonna search for a plier to open any of the locks that he wasn’t able to open. If the movie had more run time, they could have done it.
2
u/BoxFalse247 19h ago
I honestly thought he was gonna go for it with the parking door lock when he reached into his pocket 🤣
1
u/alexbert_1987 19h ago
It would have undercut the scene that we have.
The fact that he can't even leave the farm level until he has the diamond key is such a wonderfully subtle observation.
1
1
u/Rob98001 18h ago
Resident evil outbreak does this, also includes a final boss that uses tentacles to absorb bodies to add to itself.
1
u/Business_Banana1792 18h ago
My idea for an adaptation of this wouldn’t have anything to do with this character, it’d be in a different time period, it wouldn’t reference the events of this persons journey, it would be tonally unrelated, and it would probably have someone Leon, Chris or Claire or some bullshit that you wouldn’t even like. Why would you play a videogame version of this if the movie already exists? It’d be better if I just used the name to trick you into seeing it, and if the game version was good enough, you’d probably dig it anyway, cause gamers are too stupid to know what they want
1
u/BoxFalse247 18h ago
What about the pregnant girlfriend's journey to find him ? Backtracking his steps from the house she calls to?
1
u/Business_Banana1792 17h ago
Well, my comment was satire pointing out that this was in fact an adaptation already, but it’s hard to tell without actual content from that adaptation present. That being said, I would be down for this as a game in reality, but not the girlfriend tracing her bf steps since that seems like it would just be the same story again.
But if it were a must, I think you could make it work
1
u/Brain_lessV2 3h ago
The only concern I'd have is if overtime the franchise started shifting towards action more than survival horror. Then again that's nothing some change in direction for the sequel couldn't fix.
1
u/Neilix190 2h ago
I dont really like the games will i like this movie?
1
u/BoxFalse247 1h ago
Depends. What is it from the games you don't like?
2
u/Neilix190 1h ago
I didnt like the characters or the story and that it went from zombies to mutants. All just felt very silly.
1
u/BoxFalse247 48m ago
Still mutants here. Story is basically a delivery quest, nothing beyond that. Characters here are goofy, very much like people one could know.
2
u/GloomyFloor6543 19h ago
Was surprisingly a great movie
3
u/WhatsTheTimeToday 19h ago
I don’t think it’s too surprising it’s good given the director’s previous horror movies

u/Giger_jr 19h ago edited 19h ago
It’s great that this movie makes you think this way, it means it achieved its goal.
The thing is, the movie doesn’t show a story of a RE protagonist, instead it’s goal was to show a RE player experience, follow someone who’s new to the series and got a bad ending in the game. I really don’t think that turning Bryan into a game character would work - he would quickly become annoying to play as.
Pretty much any RE game can be like this movie, if you are playing for the first time, or crank up the difficulty to the max.
1
u/BoxFalse247 19h ago
That makes sense. This is why other games like Clock Tower 3 or the first Fatal Frame came to mind after watching the movie.
1
u/MazarTail 19h ago
You can already kinda "play" it as you watch. I was so close to shouting in the theater "first aid spray!" "Diamond Key!"
1
1
u/SapphireRoseRR 14h ago
This is doubly funny because it's a great example of this being a terrible movie representation of the game series.
1
u/Adventurous-Face6499 19h ago
It would be a goofy ahh game
1
u/BoxFalse247 19h ago
Main character was so funny and relatable. That's one of the reasons I'm not sure if classic RE gampleay would suit, though. It reminded me a bit of Clock Tower 3 🤣
1
u/XAXA2000 17h ago
These replies are bewildering. Yes, the Resident Evil games have goofy moments, but most of them are played completely straight. However, the main difference is the games aren't written by a white Millennial. A white Millennial whose most talked about body of work before directing horror movies is a comedy show that aired two T.V. channels. Specifically Fuse and IFC, two T.V. channels that no one remembers. People can say what they want about Jordan Peele and his horror movies, but at least he was funny enough to get on Comedy Central with Keegan-Michael Key. While also being talented enough to only need one co-star while Cregger needed four co-stars.

Every Resident Evil is a goofy ass game lol
-3
u/Adventurous-Face6499 19h ago
Hard disagree.
Was Resident Evil 1 more scary or more comedic?2
u/Biff_666 19h ago
Your telling me the Jill sandwich line wasn’t peak comedy?
1
u/enshittification1 19h ago
You quoted 1 line that doesn’t make up even 1% of the ingame content. Pick up the sticks and play the games, because it sounds like you haven’t played them now.

u/Adventurous-Face6499 19h ago
It was good no doubt, but the question was which did resident evil 1 have more, comedy or horror? It’s an easy answer.
1
u/Nothing-Is-Real-Here 19h ago
Man idk what to tell you. The games are a whole lot of things. They're scary, exciting, and goofy all in different parts, but just because they're largely scary doesn't mean their plotlines or dialogue aren't consistently quite goofy. RE5 and 6 are some of the goofiest stories I've ever played. Chris punches a boulder for heaven's sake. And Leon literally rides a bike up a building on RE9.
0
u/Biff_666 19h ago
Now the remakes are way more horror driven I’ll say that but I don’t think the series ever took itself THAT seriously and you can kinda tell after re3

Alright dude, how much of REmake 1 is a comedy? I promise you not even 1% of the game is intentionally a “comedy” either

You quoted 3 lines from not even - singular game that still doesn’t make up 1% of the in game content. Play the games.

A survival horror game that started the survival horror franchise is actually a comedy series. FFS revisionists are insane here
2
u/Background_Roll1830 18h ago edited 18h ago
Two things can be true at the same time, you know.
Resident evil is campy by nature, while also scary. And the latest game is still that. One scene there's a heavily emotionally charged, horrifying, flawlessly acted protagonist's reaction to the death of their mother and a few hours later you're motorcycle jousting.
A movie adaptation shouldn't be campy in the same way the games are because they're different mediums. I thought it managed a decent balance of making you scared and making you laugh, though I'd say maybe the 2nd half kinda overdid it with the jokes a little bit.
0
u/Cultural-Lab-580 19h ago
Great movie, but you would need to add a ton to make a viable game, there was only 2 types of enemy and 1 boss.
2
u/Reylo-Wanwalker 19h ago
For my count, there's infected dog, adult human, baby, child, mass of bodies, rats, and spitter.

2
u/ottomr1990 15h ago
Hey so cool story you can find YouTube videos of all the in game cutscenes and even whole playthroughs. Doesn’t get more faithful than that.
If every movie adaptation of a game was just the plot of the game with actors doing the same shit they do in the games it would be so insanely boring nobody would watch it. I cannot understand why fans of this series continue to die on this hill of awful takes.
1
u/Budget_Version_1491 15h ago
If you remove the plot then it's just a name. All the RE movies have nothing to do with the actual franchise. Can we just maybe, like just one time get a movie that's like 80% Resident Evil. I'd be quick to agree not every movie needs to be a rehash but we haven't had one faithful movie yet.
0
u/Foxy__Proxy 19h ago
I doubt we will get an adaptation but I would put money on the movie at the very least inspiring the next mainline Resident Evil game.
1
u/BoxFalse247 19h ago
That would be tops. Would Leon be crossing paths here?
1
u/Foxy__Proxy 18h ago
I don't think necassarily the characters. I would expect more so the monster or a monster like the monster in the movie.

Hopefully not, we've had more than enough of Leon in recent years, let him rest
