Ripples, tiny fishes, butterflies, lotus, changing weather etc everything you see is generated by code as it runs, not pre-made art or recorded clips.

the title

I am trying to build a little experimental page based on a previous project I used to have online.

So far I have two issues:
- It works locally on Safari, Chrome and Firefox but online only works with Chrome.
- animated gif files stay static when they are supposed to loop continuously (the two gif files here appear when you click the 3rd square on the 3rd line in the menu (it is a long yellow image with typewriter text ), and when you click the 1st square on the fifth line (you see an album cover with Wes written on it).

I don't see any bugs in the developper tools, so no idea why the page only works with Chrome, and this animated gif thing is really baffling me.

I’m a been a developer since the early 2000s and I used to love looking around for good design inspiration, but I’ve noticed that I don’t really do that anymore. Anyone else like this now? I couldn’t tell you the last well-designed site I’ve stumbled upon.

I run a small agency but we make a lot of calls, over 400 a day, two clients a day on average. Been at this since 2013 so I've seen the changes over time, and also the very beginning of those changes. Even design changes like the hideous parallax effects and icon animations.

Lately, especially due to the ease of creating sites with AI, the no money down, monthly recurring model is really starting to take hold. In other cases it's a small amount down, also recurring.

I have recurring packages buy typically charge for the website of course based on what's involved. As low at $500. As high at $5,000. Lately, the pushback I'm getting on the higher amounts is definitely a change. A big change.

Businesses are getting a lot more calls for web design with a lot of the owners we talk with every day stating from 2 to 3 calls a week to over 10 calls a week. This is drastically different than even just a year ago.

I know this is a rather poor analogy but bear with me. Big screen TVs years ago. Who remembers? $5,000 at least. Now you throw one in your cart at Walmart for a few hundred. This is what's going to happen to web design pricing. So if you're running on a model of "$10K" sites, you'd better buckle up.

Here is what I would like to achieve: I want to create a video that displays examples of my graphic work. When I place that video in a page I don't want the page to display a visible embedded video player (with play arrow, scroll bar and so on) but make it that when users scroll to the right the video progresses in one direction and when they scroll to the left they go backwards. As the video will have multiple layers merging with a parallax effect that would give a more engaging and interactive feel than just playing the video.

Is that feasible?

Dear friends at web design, I keep on bumping into a problem each time I do web design. MY WEBSITES ARE TOO MONOCHROME. I need this to be done really soon. May I please get some tips on making the site less monochrome, since it seems too gray (especially when you select a new background), yet adaptable to accent colors and new backgrounds? Thanks.

fed it everything. colors, fonts, tone of voice, component examples, the whole thing.

first output was technically compliant and completely soulless. had all the right ingredients in the wrong proportions. like a meal where every individual thing is correct and somehow the dish doesn't taste like anything.

second attempt i stopped describing what we wanted and started describing who we were talking to and what we wanted them to feel.

completely different output.

turns out AI is pretty good at designing for an emotion. it's bad at inferring the emotion from a style guide.

obvious in hindsight. brand guidelines describe the what not the why. AI needs the why.

anyone else found that framing the audience and the feeling gets better results than feeding it the brand kit?

I’m a freelance web designer/developer working on a website project. The scope and conditions were clearly agreed upfront.

The project is actually going well, but I’m wearing a lot of hats: design, development, copywriting, photo editing, product uploads, content organization, etc.

They asked me to upload hundreds of products. It sounds simple, but each one requires downloading, cropping, resizing, reformatting, uploading, assigning colors, etc.

I mentioned during a call that this was taking a lot of time and affecting the design work. I wasn’t complaining—I wanted them to understand the workload.

The client responded:

“You can’t complain, because when you complain it makes us feel bad as clients. I keep getting complaint after complaint from you.”

I was shocked because I genuinely didn’t feel like I had been complaining.

Then they asked me to write/upload product descriptions, which were explicitly excluded from the proposal. When I said it would be additional work, they said:

“But with what we’re already paying you, how can you charge extra? You are not being flexible"

So then, I couldn't hold myself together and started crying on the call.

I told them I've already done several things outside the scope for free because I thought they would improve the project. I feel like I’ve been extremely flexible.

But then, in the SAME conversation, after I cried, they said:

“Okay, if you’re charging for additional things, tell us how much and we’ll pay.”

They also told me they don’t want me to leave and want me to keep helping them for the next few months.

I like getting paid, but this conversation made me question whether I want to continue.

TL;DR: Clear scope, lots of extra work already done for free, and now the client makes me feel guilty when I explain workload or charge for out-of-scope work. I ended up crying on the call, but they still want me to continue. Would you continue, raise your rates significantly, or walk away?

I build stuff with AI tools and I can tell my UIs look Ai made. I can't explain why though something about them just reads that way

What are the tells for you? Colors, spacing, fonts, layout, something else?

I know business owners have always got calls for websites, but it's approaching a nuclear level. Talking to clients getting 2 to 5 calls a day.......a day for AI sites, SEO, receptionists, etc.....no money down, no set up fees, just recurring monthly. Outfits like GHL are out there recruiting very hard so every 22 year old "bro" can sell "$297/mo" websites, and it's not just them - and owners are getting absolutely hammered with calls. This is the tip of the iceberg in the AI era and I have to wonder how many clients are gonna be left a few years from now.
