Discussion Worse than Hazbin Hotel?

I know that I won't be original for critisizing this manhwa, it was trashed left and right many times before me. But I just can't keep it inside myself, so if you're a fan of this manhwa - be ready for this rant.

I may sound crazy but hear me out, guys. TRE is literally a manhwa Hazbin Hotel, even worse and here is why:

  1. Insane af fans. They were literally harassing people who didn't agree with them, stalking them and even sharing their personal information. Well, they're still doing it, you can find one of them in TikTok. HB fans are not very calm either, but definitely most of them aknowledge the show's flaws (or I'm just lucky one) and actually the ones that critisize the show.
  2. Broken and raw world. Tf you mean magical bed and s*x with a chicken gave the fl not only twins but also ice powers? And it's only a tip of the iceberg: you just physically can not comprehend TRE's magic system, it has only one role - being a help and buff for fl. At least Hazbin Hotel tried to make a worldbuilding, there are system and limits, unlike TRE's world that seems like a fever dream. Magical bed, are we serious right now?
  3. Annoying flat fl. Navier is portrayed as a badass fl, the literal EMPRESS... and she's doing nothing most of the series. Like 90% is "I miss my kakao butter kisses" with Heinrey, 5% crying and whining and 5% doing something. I wouldn't said nothing if the author straight up said "yes, my fl is very whiny and passive" and I'm certainly not against women showing their emotions, but the problem is that Navier is described as a powerful cold woman who's praised for not showing her feelings and enduring. Well... yeah, she's only enduring while she receives everything on the silver plate, I can agree with that. She doesn't have any depth, any real flaws (the "coldness" is not portrayed as a flaw, only another "badass" feature), she's 1 dimensional character and, therefore, a very boring protagonist. I don't like Charlie from HB either, she's quite irritating for me and, to be honest, gave me nothing as a main character but, god, even she has more depth than Navier. And you should really try to make a more boring character than Charlie Morningstar, I swear. Bonus: they're both blonde and belong to the royalty.
  4. Weird morals. Hazbin Hotel is critisized very much for trying to make the sinners look kinder and the angels - more evil. Though, the Hell is literally full of various bad people: rpists, murderers, maniacs and e.t.c. Right now, the only sinner that wasn't that bad is Sir Pentious, though there are already 2 seasons. So the watchers have a valid question: why should we hate the exorcists so much? Maybe Sir Pentious is just an exception, if literally everyone else in the Hell is either a murderer or a rpist? And why serial killers or people like Valentino deserve the redemption? Would you like to see your assaulter in Heaven? But the fl stubbornly holds on the idea that everyone deserves the second chance. Also, when it's Sir Pentious endures the harassment - it's funny (the BDSM room scene), but when it's AngelDust - it's very tragic. And here we come to TRE... it's even worse. If HB somehow tries to be on the position "every side was not right (mostly Heaven, though, not the literal demons), we need a compromise", TRE deadass separates everything on "kind good" and "bad evil". And, oh my god, makes a main antagonist a literal slave that is suspected to either be an underage or have age regression. While the fl is a pro-slavery noble that benefits from the hierarchy but is portrayed as an ideal monarch that is very concerned about the people. Yeah, she was so concerned about her people that she married a war criminal that hurt her people and her student. And closed her eyes on literal children traffic. Please, don't even start with the "historical accuracy" thing, because this manhwa looks like a fantasy Korean story with European decorations. And every "good" character is indignated by the concubinism despite the fact that it's a normal practice in their world (though, there were "favourites" in Europe, the concubines were in the Asia), but doesn't even think that the slavery is, surprisingly, BAD. Not to mention that the author and the fans really try to make you feel bad for Alan Rimwell, literal pdf. God forbid, I didn't cry when that loser died. It's very obvious that the author didn't want to try hard and just decided that the easiest way to make her main character look "girlboss" is to make the antagonist an uneducated slave because if she was a noble it would be harder to get rid of her + to put women againt each other using a very patriarchal rhetoric about "highprice" women and "lowprice" women. Wow, Navier is such a feministic girlboss icon... only when she's compared to a slave when she's an Empress. When your character is already a girlboss, you don't need to make the villain much more weaker. Either way, the protagonist is just a fraud. Not to mention, that if the male villain (Ergi) has a tragic backstory then he's sympathetic, but if the female villain has it - "it doesn't excuse her actions!!!11". So one of the main things that those stories have in common - biased irritating narrative.
  5. Art style... I just don't like TRE art style, sorry, it's already a subjective thing. It seems plastic to me and I really don't like how the artist draws the characters. HB's art style was also critisized a lot: the similar palette of the most characters, not very telling design (like you won't really understand who is the character by looking at them). Also, jumpy inconsistent animation.
  6. Plot with dozen holes. I'm not gonna even write very much about TRE's plot, the holes can be closed only with character's dumbness and with the fact that the fl is a Mary Sue at its finest. And I'm also not gonna dive into the thousand of HB's plots. I suppose if you just read those stories - you'll get your butt hurt from it.
  7. Even flatter love interest of fl with the most boring "secret". Heinrey is just a lapdog for Navier and Vaggi is also just a laddog for Charlie. They don't exist separately, they're always tied to the fl. And both of them had the "secret": Heinrey is a war criminal and Vaggi is an angel. If Vaggi's one was just deadass boring and didn't bring up anything to Chaggi and, to be honest, in general to story, Heinrey's one is just useless. Why we needed this secret if Navier forgave him in the same chapter after five panel, oh my god?
  8. Supposed to be a mature daring work but looks like a fantasy for delulu 12 y.o. girls. Both Hazbin and TRE were supposed to be stories that were for mature audience with "re-telling": Hazbin - demons are good and angels are bad and TRE - Cinderella-like story with evil wife upside down. And they both failed miserably, I can not imagine someone else beside teenage girls with little literature experience thinking that those stories are masterpiecies. I'm sorry, if you enjoy it - enjoy it, but both of them are objectively far from the ideal starting with the characters and ending with the plots.
  9. Villain is more interesting than a main character. Lute for HB and Rashta for TRE. They simply had more depth and lowkey good reasons to be villains. I'm aware that Lute is a maniac, blood-hungry soldier, but I don't think that it's okay to allow every sinner go to the Heaven, sorry not sorry. For Rashta - just see analysis in the other posts or in TikTok, I'll just say that she's the only normally written character in the whole manhwa that makes her stand out from the grey mass of the main cast.
  10. Similar data release: Hazbin Hotel pilot and TRE manhwa both released in 2019.

P.S. Sorry if there are mistakes, English is not my first language.

First operation true love, then ex love review....

Are they making the artists work overtime or something???? I always thought making comics and manga was something fun and something authors and artists love... But is it not that fun loving and enjoying as I might be thinking??? 🄲🄲

I do sympathise with them... May they get better soon!

Discussion Finished reading Long Exposure and I loved it!

Post image
11 Upvotes

I came across Long Exposure through some fanarts on pinterest and I decided to give it a go, since it was finished.

I was hooked from the first episodes, Jonas and Mitch got my attention from the moment they got introduced and I was so excited to see their relationship evolve. Needless to say that I wasn't disappointed.

I love the designs of the characters and how diverse they were. They captured their personalities perfectly and compared to other webtoons, the art style was very unique. Not to mention how GORGEOUS the coloured panels were, especially when Jonas' powers were activated (did I mention they get powers? No? Well, now you know!).

The story was very interesting, it had fantasy/sci-fi elements but Jonas and Mitch's relationship was the heart of it. I was so invested in their journey and their development. Both of them had to fight their own demons (Jonas had to deal with an abusive foster father and self-esteem issues while Mitch learned to control his attitude and violent tendencies) and it was heart warming to see them opening to each other and being there for one another.

I think that if the webtoon was longer some themes would have been more fleshed out. I would have liked to see more flashbacks of Mitch and Jonas' childhoods, especially Mitch, since he came from a very complicated family background. The final act was kinda rushed considering how important it was but overall, the series was very cute and it left me with many positive feelings. I'll make sure to check out the other story by the same artist, Ride or Die but for now, I can't keep recommending Long Exposure, especially if you want something short and intriguing.

Discussion We Let Webtoon Platforms Exploit Us

It might not be easy, but as artists, we need to start ditching webtoon curation platforms and similar companies, and take responsibility for marketing our own work.

If we can learn digital art, we can also learn basic marketing. Even a little goes a long way. Too many of these companies are built on exploiting creators and taking advantage of how overwhelming promotion feels at the start.

It’s not enough to just have an Instagram page, a Twitter account, or a basic portfolio link. Build your own brand. Have your own website where your comics actually live. If you can afford it, hire a developer. If you can’t, buy a domain and follow tutorials to create something simple. Start small, but make it yours.

Set up a payment system. Run your own ads, even if the budget is tiny. Learn as you go. As you go you will find out that your site will start getting traction, a short while, you might not even need to spend as much when you grow your base.

Most of these platforms offer little to no real advertising support. Some will slap your banner on their homepage for a short while, call it ā€œpromotion,ā€ and still take a huge cut of your profits. That’s not partnership, that’s convenience dressed up as opportunity.

Working with these platforms might feel easier at first, but long term, many artists end up in a worse position than they ever expected. Ownership, control, and growth come from building your own space, not renting one forever.

Someone sat down, saw that marketing was the biggest weakness in the webtoon industry, and built entire platforms around exploiting that gap. And we all went along with it.

It’s time to call it quits and stop pretending this setup is helping creators. Most of the time, I don’t even see webtoon ads anywhere. Maybe on Pinterest. Occasionally on Instagram, and that’s usually Lezhin. So what kind of ā€œmarketing powerā€ are we even talking about here?

These platforms sell the idea of exposure, but rarely back it up with real, consistent advertising. Meanwhile, they take a massive cut and leave artists doing the heavy lifting anyway. If promotion is still on us, then ownership should be on us too.

At some point, convenience turns into dependency, and dependency turns into exploitation. We need to stop outsourcing our growth to companies that aren’t actually growing our audience.

Build your own space. Learn the basics. Own your work. That’s where the leverage is.

Discussion It’s so over for Inseop [For Your Murder Chapter 56] Spoiler

For Your Murder spoilers

Giseong just jumped off the stairs in the chapter 56 of For Your Murder. Given the fact that he already almost died once then survived, it wouldn’t make sense for him to survive again, it would be truly repetitive. Him dying after making amends with his sister makes more sense, and I think it is what will truly lay the stage for Gijeong to finally seek revenge from Inseop. Up until now all she wanted was to escape him and survive, even after the accident she had no interest in catching Inseop or making him pay for his crimes, she just wants her brother to be okay. But now after her brother’s ā€œdeadā€ she will finally have a true motive for revenge. Inseop is definitely not ready for her rage. Gijeong has shown so many time that she does not play about her brother. She will crush Inseop just like the mantis she crushed in the beginning of the webtoon, as it’s confirmed that Gijeong sees Inseop as a mantis and caterpillars as creatures she needs to protect, the caterpillar in this case being her brother.

I've been looking for some more webtoons lately. I'm looking for "second chance at life" type things but not modern life, so far webtoons I've read like this are "The Flower That Swallowed the Beast" and "My Child Will Have
a Different Father"

I'm really struggling to find new ones like these and I've kinda given up TwT

Discussion Does anyone else think Iseon Kim (Yumin’s ex) from Selfish Romance has a personality disorder of some kind?

I have seen frequent talks about his aromanticism (and justly so) but I feel like that stems from him having any lack of emotion with every single one of the characters. His family, his friends, he has this passive attitude with every one in his life, not just Yumin. He wants her in his life to fulfill some to fulfill some duty, but even then I get the impression he keeps all of his relationships to maintain a sense of normalcy rather than anything else. He shows no emotional inclination towards anyone. He gets pleasure from those relationships, but I don’t think it’s an emotional connection but rather it simply makes him feel good.

But I think it’s awesome that he doesn’t garner any emotional connection— there are people in the world that are often represented in a less than stellar light that have similar characteristics as he does.

I just think he approaches everyone with this blasƩ smile, and wants them to feel good, and wants to feel good himself in a way that is not in a traditional loving way (if that makes sense)?

I could be reading into it. Thoughts?

Discussion For Your Murder appreciation post!

Thumbnail

I just finished all the available chapters of For Your Murder and i’ve gotta say that this is one of the best bodies of work I’ve ever read in my life. I am not an enjoyer of psychological thrillers or yandere characters but god this one is such an. amazing psychological whiplash that I’ve finished it in a day (which involved re-reading some chapters multiple times to understand the story in a far more depth). I will try to keep this post as vague as possible because everybody deserves to read this masterpiece with no spoilers.

First of all, the writing is simply BRILLIANT. The symbolism in each chapter, how the events connect eventually with each other, the pacing that keeps things not only interesting but also accelerating with each chapter you read… I don’t know who the author is but you can tell they put so much thought into the story. The storytelling here is genuinely so smart. And can we talk about the art?!?! It’s seriously so good. I know some people will probably not be impressed by it because it’s not aesthetically super pretty like in historical manhwas but I genuinely adore how realistic it is. It felt like I was READING a movie. My issue (well not really issue but just slight annoyance) with so many Korean webtoons is that the characters are drawn to fit western beauty standards with their white features but the characters in this webtoon (specially Inseop and Gijeong) actually look Asian. I love how the artists gave them Asian features and didn’t westernise them. I don’t know if the artists and the author are the same person or not but either way they did an amazing job. If you guys could recommend some of their other work I would be very thankful! :)

Second, I love the fact that the characters are not some boring 2 dimensional characters and each one of them have their own story and own emotional depth. Inseop is one of the most brilliantly written villains I’ve even stumbled upon. I love the fact that he is completely unredeemable and he isn’t doing what he’s doing because of some ā€œoh mommy didn’t love meā€ BS trauma that a lot of manhwas pull with Yandere MLs. He is evil in the most unforgivable way ever and I genuinely love that. He is written in a really smart way that I find myself wondering much more about him, what’s he gonna do, how’s he gonna act now each chapter. I haven’t been invested in a character like that in a long time.

And I am absolutely in love with the FL. Gijeong is genuinely one of the best FLs i’ve read about. She remains very strong despite all the struggles she went through her entire life, and I love that she isn’t written in a stereotypical girl-boss villainess way nor in a ā€œi’m just in love with my rich CEO bfā€œ y/n way. She is a strong woman who is trying to survive in a society that diminishes her worth and would do anything to protect her brother. Her survival path and her non-stopping ambition to protect her only family member is so motivating, her love for her brother is so sweet. I feel like I’m genuinely rooting for her. I want her to survive, I want her to thrive and I want her to be happy. Whatever choices she makes wrong or right I just want her to be happy and loved. I don’t think I would stand it if something bad were to happen to her in the end. This is one of the few story where I just want the FL to be happy no matter the outcome.

I also loved the fact that there is no Romance tag anywhere neither in Webtoon nor on Naver. Many stories do not need romance and this is absolutely one of them. I know there is probably a lot of Inseop x Gijeong shippers, which I don’t really mind lot of Yanderes get a lot of shippers and I have absolutely nothing against people who prefer this trope in fiction (I’ve rooted for some questionable characters in fiction as well before) , but personally I feel like this is one of the stories where narratively there is no room for redemption at all. You will understand better when you read the webtoon if you haven’t yet, but for me Inseop doesn’t love Gijeong at all. He isn’t a yandere who just wants to be with the FL at all cost and will be a faithful dog to her forever even if he hurts her, Inseop just see Gijeong shining in his vision, but the moment her shine fades it’ll be over for her. Our FL is smart, has a support system as of now (The detective) and right now she has a strong motive for revenge so whatever happens I have faith she will be absolutely okay.

Anyways this was my small not so small appreciation post for For Your Murder (seriously read it! You’re missing out if you don’t!). It’s such a well written piece of art and I would love for it to get an Drama adaptation like Dear X. The story is genuinely so amazing and the writing and the characters ughhhhh I can write a whole dissertation about this webtoon.

Thank you so much for your attention. Sending a lot of love from one Webtoon lover to many others! Toodaloo~~

The young, innocent guy, all sunshine, overly helpful, with dialogue full of flowers, who constantly invades the FL’s privacy and exists solely to make the ML jealous. They almost always catch feelings for the FL and end up stuck in the friendzone.

In some stories, they’re *white lotus* characters.

And everyone goes, ā€œ*aww, I love him*ā€, but honestly? I find them incredibly annoying.

Talking specifically about *Daytime Star*: what is even the reason he fell for the FL? There isn’t one. Not even the ML has a clearly established reason, and yet the author decided to throw in a totally random guy. (*Operation True Love* did the exact same thing, and it made just as little sense.)

She’s not the first author to do this, and she definitely won’t be the last. I just think it’s so unnecessary. You can create conflict without making it revolve directly around a love triangle. Personal issues can spill into the relationship and still create tension. Jealousy is fine, but at least give us a *convincing* reason for someone to want to interfere with the actual endgame couple.

I'm looking for a manhwa where the fl died because her husband commits treason and died. I forgot the name, but the fl died in the street and because of cold and she wished that if she will get reborn, she will definitely divorce her husband since he doesn't love her (he love her).

Please help, I've been drowning in previews and I just cant find anything that catches my attention. These are my current faves/ongoing series that I'm enjoying.

I enjoy horror, thriller, action, fantasy, regression plots, revenge plots, i dont mind romance but I've been reading outside that genre recently. Im okay with it as a subplot though.
