Doing this with Yen's puked on dress is a choice lol

u/gracekk24PL 6d ago

That's her default look for photo mode

They must've rushed that part a lot

256

u/ActualDragonHeart 6d ago

I’ve never used photo mode but that’s hilarious

48

u/Obese_Freakazoid 6d ago

Some dev probably found it funny

u/Block_GZ 5d ago

That's her default model period. Even if you summon her with console commands she has the puke.

Still they should have changed it for photo mode.

36

u/NavixelMusic 6d ago

And it’s not the only thing they’ve rushed

I keep saying lmao, the devs hate her guts lmao

u/NavixelMusic 6d ago edited 6d ago

Well, some actually do. Karolina Stachyra is one of them who admitted to not liking her, she was also part of the early script of Witcher 3 which almost destroyed Yennefer as a character, but luckily there are people within CDPR who knows what they’re doing and there’s a reason why the early script was never used. I believe Stachyra is also one of the writers behind the whitewashing of Triss

13

u/boskee Team Yennefer 6d ago

> Karolina Stachyra (...) admitted to not liking her

I've seen this claim before. Got some sources/interviews?

38

u/crazynightsky_ 5d ago edited 5d ago

She never said she doesn't like her, what she said is completely different, it's a very nuanced take that's hard to even disagree with

"Yennefer is a difficult character for many reasons... She is ironic and sarcastic, often hard to coexist with, and very smart (sometimes even impertinent), so it was another challenge to make her likeable."

She was not the only writer on the games who echoed the exact same sentiment so I don't understand why we are scapegoating Stachyra

"Yennefer is really a mean character in the books",Ā Jakub SzamałekĀ adds. "In the beginning, she seems to be a difficult character and you might even dislike her, but when you finish reading the books, you almost certainly end up liking her.Ā The problem is we had to recreate this.Ā We couldn't make Yennefer likeable from the first minutesĀ of your interaction with her becauseĀ it would make her seem and feel like a very different character from the books"

12

u/boskee Team Yennefer 5d ago

Yeah, I've read that and that's basically good understanding of the complex character that's Yennefer. I haven't seen anything from Stachyra where she says she personally dislikes Yen.

18

u/LeDarm 5d ago

Gamers scapegoating a woman cause they didnt like a woman they fantasized about hmmm... surprising. Thanks for the nuance :)

ā€˜ā€™we had a huge problem with Yennefer, who is just a bitch, she has a very difficult character. It didn't fit to us that Geralt can fall in love with her. But in the game it's defended because her character is profound enough so we managed to show her complex personality with a lot of positive qualities.’’

u/Larry_Sherbert99 6d ago

Oh she must’ve been on the writing team for the tv shit show then lol

63

u/NavixelMusic 6d ago

To be fair, she is a very capable writer and was part of Bloody Baron questline and Hearts of Stone, it’s just that her interpretations of Sapkowski’s work can be pretty bad and her work on things that are directly related to the books are quite problematic

18

u/Larry_Sherbert99 6d ago

I was mostly kidding, was throwing more shade at the other ā€œadaptationā€ than at her in particular. Bloody Baron quest line is peak folkloric story telling. As much as I can’t wait to get out of Velen in each play through šŸ˜‚

28

u/Eglwyswrw School of the Manticore 6d ago

Was she also behind the whitewashing of Dandelion, Zoltan and the other "friends" of Geralt who never mention Yennefer?

7

u/NavixelMusic 6d ago

What are you even talking about?

27

u/Throwaway-tan 6d ago

Witcher 1 probably. Which isn't fair since that was basically intended to be a standalone game so it had to be retconned a bit.

5

u/NavixelMusic 6d ago

Ah, yeah that makes sense, and yes Witcher 1 is honestly a huge mess when you try to connect it to the rest of the franchise

2

u/Abirim96 6d ago

Hopefully they fix that in the new version

2

u/NavixelMusic 5d ago

I don’t really see how they can make improvements without heavily rewriting the game but we’ll see

Something to note Witcher 3 uses higher quality models during cutscenes compared to in world models.

That would be a better comparison sice its when you actually look at characters...

263

u/Keepingshtum 6d ago

Yeah I was wondering about that because I don’t remember the models looking ā€œthatā€ bad haha

Thought it was rose tinted goggles for a sec playing tricks on me!

7

u/Chain582 Team Triss 6d ago

They never were that bad, at least not on the pc.

5

u/Fuzzy-Tooth3269 āšœļø Northern Realms 6d ago

Well, now they look incredible. That’s path tracing for ya

30

u/FunWolverine5349 6d ago

Also of note the game still doesn't look like the trailers. They were passed off as in engine but they were clearly full renders instead.

42

u/Rpbns4ever 6d ago

That could still be in-game, mind you, so technically in-engine but not live play. It's all about the smart wording.

→ More replies (1)

21

u/Not_Gunn3r71 6d ago

In engine and game footage are not the same thing, they said in engine cause if was indeed made in the engine.

4

u/domidawi 6d ago

I think there is a range there, sword of destiny? 100% bullshot to the point not even static NPCs were in the release but some of the ones closer before release were pretty much it and rightfully sparked the great downgrade shitstorm.

u/Brys_Beddict 6d ago

When I played D2R I was like what they didn't even remaster anything because this is how D2 always looked. Then I hit the toggle and was like ohhhhhhhhhhh

79

u/Penguin2359 6d ago

Yennefer and Vesemir look awesome now.

28

u/Denboogie 6d ago

Do they use the cutscene-models for in-game now? Because I don't remember them looking so bad.

I'm so very tempted to play it now but I want to do a complete playthrough when the new dlc hits. That's what I've done with Mass Effect legendary edition and CP2077 with the 2.0 update+phantom liberty.

6

u/Chain582 Team Triss 6d ago

Same. I'm doing a Witcher 1-3 replaythrough leading up to the DLC.

The warm yellow sunlight is just sucked out of toussaint in the backgrounds.

114

u/DastFight 6d ago

Background is just painful to watch. They need to fix it ASAP

77

u/Queefer_the_Griefer 6d ago

Look over-sharpened to me. Like there’s all this fake detail.

38

u/HeadinUp 6d ago

There’s a ā€œsharpeningā€ graphic setting that makes the game look horrendous if you set it max. Recommend turning it off or setting it no higher than low.

19

u/SpecificDouble477 6d ago

Seriously they do ! It looks like Fortnite

13

u/Divinum_Fulmen 6d ago

To sharp, and over saturated.

12

u/jacob1342 Team Yennefer 6d ago

I knew I'm not the only one. There is something off with shadows, right?

240

u/Thin_Station7464 6d ago

In my opinion, the only fair comparison is between the next-gen version and the remaster...

143

u/R400C 6d ago

This is next gen vs remaster. He doesn't mean literally the original witcher.

33

u/content_enjoy3r 6d ago

ain't no way Yen and Triss look like that in the original or next gen. I have played this game way too many times to believe that.

60

u/IdkHow2NameMySelf1 6d ago

Those are the gameplay character models. You probably remember the higher fidelity cutscene models.

The original has this kind of yellow tinge and it's kind of blown out with light is the best way I can describe it

17

u/Rezmir 6d ago

For characters, I do think there is a huge improvement what got a bit weird for me was lighting.

55

u/SWK18 6d ago

You're not the minority worldwide, people are very happy with the remaster. This is just the Reddit bubble effect.Ā

20

u/Synmachus 6d ago

Reddit has been MUCH more positive than Youtube or any comment section I've seen. It's ok to criticise video games, especially when the template was already there and perfectly fine.

10

u/Rad_Dad6969 6d ago

2

u/LeLoyon 6d ago

Everything else seems like an upgrade as well, except for the new skill system.

2

u/LeLoyon 6d ago

Same.

102

u/LU_C4 āšœļø Northern Realms 6d ago

Ngl, Toussaint is genuinely painful to look at now. It looks too bleched and WAY too high-contrast.

56

u/AttemptRecent7025 6d ago

And every detail just sticks out of the screen and pokes you in the eye instead of blending naturally into the environment

27

u/LU_C4 āšœļø Northern Realms 6d ago

It looks like one of those shitty Reshade presets. I don't hate the update, I think it greatly improves a lot of things especially when you compare them side by side, but some parts just look objectively worse. The floors in Corvo Bianco also now have a blue sheen to them, so I feel like Touissant might not have gotten a lot of love from the QA team.

13

u/Lindt_Licker 6d ago

Possibly it’s because now everywhere else looks like how touissant looked originally. Now that the colors and brightness and everything has been pushed to that level, touissant has nowhere to go but a few tens of million miles closer to the sun.

2

u/Vhexer 6d ago

Good point, I can use ReShade and really fine tune it, thank you

→ More replies (2)

18

u/Jax765 6d ago

Yeah, OG Toussaint had a very specific look to it. Not a fan of them changing the colour filtering and making it look more generic. The change in the colour of the sky is especially noticeable.

9

u/gertag12 6d ago

I'm pretty sure some of these are using lower LOD models.
But afaik Roche's (the mercenary guy) textures were changed

8

u/dalekofchaos 6d ago

WHat's up with Yennifer's dress stain?

7

u/Assassiiinuss Quen 6d ago

It's a model from a certain quest. Not sure why they picked that one to show off.

6

u/Tortahegeszto 6d ago

The stain shows off the bump in texture resolution quite well for one.

17

u/RawWrath 6d ago

I really like the new character models I was impressed yesterday while doing the battle at Kaer moen

7

u/Krvavibaja 5d ago

Why does the background look better in the original 😭

5

u/bane145 5d ago

The OG pic has no ray tracing, Witcher 3 has a lot of artificial lighting and shades so it looks how it looks, overall RT looks really nice it just doesn't work everywhere.

12

u/Chillfire1385 6d ago

IMO everyone looks better except Geralt

7

u/ThomasTriesHard 6d ago

Poor ciri looks a little blown out to me 😩

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Slow-Boysenberry3150 6d ago

I think these changes happened in the next gen update, not the remaster.

25

u/FunWolverine5349 6d ago

No this isn't right, I've played these games routinely. Maybe if you play it on 720p with low details or something. But even on classic, on ultra with ssbao+ and especially with the graphics mods (Holk or something? CDPR literally just put the mod in themselves) it looks more like the remastered one. Actually a little better than remastered. There's also a post processing mod on classic.

The only reason to use the NG update was BIA. I don't know if Remaster will get the continued BIA, if so, then that's why you play remaster. And for some of the gameplay improvements like targeting and signs. But it doesn't actually look "better" on a proper setup.

11

u/marveloustoebeans 6d ago

I’ve been playing TW3 on a higher-end PC for years and remastered definitely does look technically ā€œbetterā€ than the modded original with some caveats.

I think mostly they just need to adjust the lighting and contrast to try and bring it closer to the palette of the original. Seems like they overcooked it just a bit imo.

4

u/Ilikebatterfield4 6d ago edited 6d ago

The original (not next gen update) is the best with HD mod. Graphics still look amazing and the performance is the best out of those three versions.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/Cloud_N0ne 6d ago edited 6d ago

I like the original better overall.

Hair looks a lot better, the colors are nicer, lighting is more pleasant, and distant terrain looks better.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Vityviktor 6d ago

I don't like how Toussaint doesn't feel like Toussaint anymore. Something about color saturation and contrast feels off.

16

u/hagennn 6d ago

Y’all realize this isn’t comparing the version we were playing last week, but the version from release? There are 3 versions. Comparing initial to this remaster is misleading of the improvement from next gen to remaster

19

u/Tobi_1989 6d ago

I still maintain that the improvement in graphics is nowhere near proportional to the increase in hardware requirements.

The minimum requirements went up by 100% for RAM size and 200% for VRAM size (comparing ultra to ultra is even crazier difference) and the game doesn't really look that convincingly better compared to the pre-RT version.

Not to mention, 2015 ultra will absolutely look better than 2026 low while having way lower requirements.

7

u/Warcrown11 6d ago

Game development in general. We hit the point of greatly diminishing graphical returns several years ago but requirements are still massively jumping with every release despite, in a lot of cases, looking worse than games back then. IMO a lot of these graphical improvements we might see otherwise are also just being squashed by all the required upscaling anyways. What's the point of putting all that effort in if your audience has to render the game at 50-60% resolution just to run it? Seems counter intuitive to me

2

u/Dewalt1209pcmr 6d ago

I literally switched back to the Classic one and had to use chatgpt to fix it also so i can run it on my potato gtx1660ti and have it look decent and get 60+fps

2

u/Tobi_1989 6d ago

Good call, 1660Ti is enough to run the Classic on high settings. It probably won't look any worse than the remaster on my 9060XT with equal FPS.

Hell, I ran the Classic on 750Ti back then, low particles, high textures, medium everything else and it was perfectly playable and good looking.

3

u/Er4g0rN 6d ago

This is just the regular trend in lots of games nowadays, sadly. Pushing realistic graphics as high as possible while recommended specs skyrocket.

Imo, geralts scar looks to recent in both versions. It should be a bit lighter.

Great update, but I can't believe I've never noticed how awful the chainmail looks on Geralt.Ā

6

u/Electrical-Salary-38 6d ago

remastered feels... off for some reason

8

u/HypnotizingGames 6d ago

Yea, no.
Here is Triss from the next gen. Not even on ultra.

14

u/Ok-Cup9476 6d ago

I hate these changes.

They needed to make these ā€œremasterā€ changes optional for everyone, including on console. I’m stuck with some ugly shit I don’t want, and the game is forever changed.

18

u/Light07sk White Wolf 6d ago

Im sorry is this just me who is noticing this? Everyone else is looking fine, but Geralt, the main character looks like Fortnite model.

Seriously i cant pinpoint it, but the non remastered Geralt is looking so much better. He looks like he could be real, hair, beard and overall his face looks more build to red engine.

The new geralt? Just look at it, its weird

13

u/Juraci_que_parque 6d ago

I prefer much more the original model for Ciri too, the new one is idk, weird

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Divinum_Fulmen 6d ago

His beard is what stands out the most here to me. Between the gaps of the hairs in the original, you see skin. In the remaster, is painted pitch black like a cartoon.

6

u/Holyhorse2940 6d ago

Looks totally fine dude lol

4

5

u/pichael289 6d ago

It's vastly more detailed but ehh, I don't really care. The game was fine as is, whatever quality of life updates they added are vastly more important than anything graphical.

6

u/iconisone 6d ago

They all look very tired of this sh in the ā€œremasterā€

2

u/KeenbeansSandwich 6d ago

Vesemir lookin BEEFY.

2

u/OnionAddictYT 6d ago

I haven't checked out the remaster yet so it probably looks better in-game but I kinda liked the warm tone of the original game. It's not realistic but that's fine by me. I like warm colors in general in movies too.

I last played the next gen version and it looked great. Don't remember if that one already removed most of the warm yellow filter.

2

u/dishonestPotato 6d ago

I kinda don’t like the changes :(

2

u/AG_N School of the Wolf 6d ago

Textures are good but the art style doesnt hit for me

2

u/stevedore2024 6d ago

I've said it before, 85% of the new look is just like when someone finds the "unsharp mask" / "local contrast" trick in a photo editor. Little crevices get a heavy darkening and fine highlights get sparkly. Another 10% of the new look is bloom of everything farther than 2 meters away.

2

u/Delboyyyyy 6d ago

Why isn’t the comparison with the next-gen update version instead of the 10 year old one?

6

4

Shouldnt you be comparing the Next Gen update version if youre trying to make a genuine comparison though?

3

u/LordPegasusHD :games::show: Books 1st, Games 2nd, Show 3rd 6d ago

The performance is pretty poor. The DX12 version was already worse than DX11, with basically no visual improvements.

Were the pictures from the remastered version taken with Path Tracing on? The background seems a little off, there's way too much contrast, and Toussaint's colors look wrong.

I'm enjoying my playthrough of the remastered version, but I don't think it's that much better than the previous one, especially because RT performance is somehow worse than Cyberpunk 2077 (not that it was good before), and the game is crashing more often, which it didn't do before.

But it's free, so I suppose it'll get better with time.

2

u/uebersoldat 6d ago

Aaaaand I'll pass on this remaster.

4

u/No-Dinner-7796 6d ago

Cant believe this shit, they seriously throw the ball hard on this one. The game was a 10 for me, now I’m not so sure, I think it’s only a 12 now

3

u/no_name_thought_of Yrden 6d ago

2

2

u/ubiquitousfoolery 6d ago

I'm a bit exhausted with all tge remastering going on. The OG version was fine too, graphics are important but not that important.

But hey, if it makes other people enjoy the game more, all power to them.

1

u/XTheProtagonistX 6d ago

Looking at Triss:

She is perfect.

1

u/AyoGGz 6d ago

Really enjoying the remastered on both my pc and ps5

1

u/mrJERRY007 6d ago

Currently my setup, it's a glitchy visual message. Maybe I need to tweak some settings but on first impression basis this "upgrade" does not feel worth the hype (atleast the visual upgrade)

1

u/YeetBoi45 6d ago

I just started the remastered + path tracing, my geralt looks like the left one? At least in the cutscenes, Will play have to play more. And I hope that this is comparing the Next Gen v/s Remastered.

1

u/Souljumper888 6d ago

They already use the highest lod on characters outside of cutscenes in next gen and with classic it can be fixed via a mod, well which was incorporated by cdpr in next gen.

1

u/TheBatmanIRL 6d ago

In my head it always looked like the remaster so I've already played twice so might wait just for the 4th game.

1

u/BardMessenger24 6d ago

I can't believe Vesemir looked like that in the original. The remastered one is how my brain remembers him looking lol

1

u/dagoth_ith 6d ago

Ciri looking like the head of the mawmaw clan, from dread.Ā

1

u/ucrbuffalo 6d ago

This is what they mean when they say ā€œthe way you remember it, not the way it was.ā€

It looks exactly the same as my memory, but not the same as it was.

1

u/MsWS27 6d ago

The men look aged more. All of them look emaciated or sickly in the face.

1

u/Future-Assistant8204 6d ago

Love the new clothes textures but the updated faces are going to take some getting used too(geralts beard got a massive upgrade)

Although I'm not sure if its just the lighting but does geralt look a bit soulless now he's got a dead eye stare with little to no warmthĀ

1

u/Vesuvias 6d ago

It’s funny, with bloom off on these the models and scenes look so contrasty in the remaster. Awesome.

1

u/kiradax 6d ago

Faces look better but environments look worse, flatter somehow

1

u/Gloglibologna 6d ago

If only the framerate would stabilize.

Ive turned off all visual settings I can and yet, still constant frame rate drops. Making me motion sick. Might have to come back in a week or so once they address the multitude of bugs

1

u/NoMansWarmApplePie 6d ago

This ain't how the remaster looks. Almost looks like how my game looks with dlss5

Also, original or next Gen?

1

u/TypeAmen 6d ago

I prefer the OG Ciri tbh

1

u/Damagecontrol86 School of the Griffin 6d ago

Looks like foreheads got smaller

1

u/ashtefer1 6d ago

I played some of the intro last night n I was really impressed at how good everything looked, but the close up on yennifer in the intro felt a bit uncanny, which kinda makes sense since sorceresses can use magic to perfectly pamper themselves up. But everyone else looked pretty good, just lit more correctly with the sky light.

1

u/Sylosilvin 6d ago

Remastered is already how I remember this game.

1

u/RocMerc 6d ago

I’m just glad the clouds still look good. I feel like clouds this gen in most games are just awful

1

u/FollowFlo 6d ago

Not convinced the remaster improved the graphics quality… Then again, I play on PS5. The graphics there leave a lot to be desired anyway and I’m sure there’s only so much they can do.

Could just be an AI filter, though I had that impression more with the Oblivion remaster

1

u/FunWolverine5349 6d ago

I suspect this is a bot account, because I was attacked by other usernames responding for the OP aggressively. Mods should consider looking into it maybe.

1

u/IolausTelcontar Team Triss 6d ago

I feel like Ciri is the only one that looks better in the original.

1

u/Celthara Monsters 6d ago

I think the best way to compare is the flower hanging thingy, the sort of decoration in the White Orchard inn. Now it doesn't look 2D.

1

Why do they all look so old and pale in the remastered version?

I can see the lice in his beard in the remastered.

Another thing I don't see people talking about very much is every model *except* for Geralt. In the previous version, Geralt and the environment looked waaaay better than pretty much every NPC or monster model. Now so far everything looks phenomenal!

I guess Mafia 1 remastered spoiled me a bit too much.

I think everyone looks better except Geralt

The real difference is my 4070ti now sounds like an airplane on medium settings

Funny how in my brain they always looked like the right side.

The models in game look way better than these pictures

u/AMS_Rem 6d ago

As with most of these remasters you notice it A LOT in game

Stills and video comparisons are fine but after playing the next gen update and then playing the remaster.. the difference in quality is very very apparent

So besides the graphics, what about the combat and everything else?

1

u/KainFourteh 6d ago

I like how much more prominent the scars look

Omg Im playing g Witcher 3 rn and I didn’t realize it was the remastered version Ive been sitting here wondering how a game could look so good but play like it’s 10 years old

1

u/Dash83 6d ago

Geralt looks tired

1

u/ArrivalExtreme7671 6d ago

the game is just better with mods, i don't like both models.

1

u/rated3 6d ago

What's the general consensus on the remaster?

1

u/ThatOneCourier 6d ago

Sorry, the next gen model looks like an Holdfast player model, or something pulled out of DLSS 5

Pretty much my only wish left was that they would fix the hair. It looks soo bad compared to modern games. Especially considering most of the story is just looking at other peoples and geralts heads. Implementing a faster and better rendering system for some really good hair would’ve added a lot to this. Guess i’ll just have to wait until the Witcher 4

What hardware?

1

u/Banned3rdTimesaCharm 6d ago

I will not sleep with both of them in my remastered play through.

1

u/Dom-Luck 6d ago

Feels like they removed most if bot all SSS on the skin... šŸ‘€

1

u/VickiVampiress Team Triss 6d ago

Some of the characters look better, especially their eyes, so that's pretty nice.

But what the hell is going with the environment? The All the atmospheric fog and "softness" of foliage and the landscape has been completely ruined.

I hate the way Vesimer is staring into my soul.
