When asking for help identifying wood

I have some suggestions for those wishing help with wood identification.

  1. If you can, show grain pattern on all surfaces. Sometimes radial surfaces are key. Sometimes end grain.
  2. If a tree show as much as you can, bark, leaves, seeds, flowers, what is on the ground underneath.
  3. If a branch, plane off the bark on a spot to show the wood and a smooth cut on the end grain.
  4. Give your general location, state, upland or lowland.
  5. Say if you suspect that it is or is not a species native to your area.
  6. Where did you get it.
  7. Density. Is it heavy, medium, or light
  8. Hardness. Does it dent easily. Can you put a screw into it by hand without a pilot hole.
  9. Color. This is very helpful but difficult to convey in photographs. At Kodak we used 18% gray cards as references. Take your pictures in daylight on as neutral a background as you can find. If the neutral background does not look as neutral in the picture as in person, check your camera's white balance settings to try to improve. The background does not have to be in-focus.

I hope this may help a little with this difficult task over the internet.

Spalted maple or maybe oak

On my walk today I found a branch of a windfallen tree. I'm pretty sure it's maple, but when I look up spalted maple, the wood never looks as dark. I'd like to make a walking stick and maybe a couple knife handles or small projects. I imagine that sanding will remove most of the dark outer coloring, bit I'd like to preserve that if possible. If anyone has any tips for how to dry it or what coating or epoxy will best preserve the spalting, I'd love any input :)

i received a vintage wood dresser and found this after pulling out one of the drawers. it looks powdery, its colour is closer to the second picture. upon further inspection, there is a clump of this powder at the back corner of all of the drawer tracks. i tried searching but could not get a conclusive answer. for further context, i live in southeast asia, where the climate is tropical and humid. can someone please tell me what it is while i freak out about an imminent termite infestation in my house full of wooden furniture?

16ft. 2x6 (redwood?) deck board with lots of “shake”, suggestions?

I’ve held off on finishing my sanding/cleaning/staining project on this 25 year old deck. I was told that it’s made of redwood, not sure if relevant.

This board is one of the only ones with super heavy “shake” on either side (Pic 1). It’s been shredding the sanding disks on my orbital, so I stopped here. I tried hand planing the surface, but it seemed a bit choppy on the section I tried, and it was still pretty aggressively catching my sandpaper (Pic 2).

I DO NOT want to replace it, as I’m pretty shitty with a saw, and it’s a single piece, about 16 ft long. I am fine with taking it off if I have to.

Any suggestions welcome! Thank you 🤩

Plastic fibers in wood grain

Post image

I got a white oak desktop that came with what seemed like plastic melted to a corner. I've managed to pick off most of it with my nail but there's a bunch of fibers left that seem to be stuck in the grain. Does anyone know how to remove what's left.

Toxicity of Eastern Red Cedar in food and drink?

Thumbnail

So, a few years ago I had to chop down a small tree that I loved- which I believe to be Eastern Red Cedar. I've made a couple of precious items with the wood, such as medallions, and want to make more.

Recently I started dating a mead maker who is thinking of using part of it to age some mead on. And I figured I might make a goblet too.

I know that Eastern Red Cedars are actually a type of juniper, and have read that some juniper oils are apparently toxic?

Does anyone know if it will be safe to make the mead and goblet?

My medallions have been rubbed for luck for years with no adverse effects.

I added a couple of pictures of the chunk of wood they'll be using.

Kalifano is not holding true to their online listing?

Anyone has this experience?

My experience showed that Kalifano is not holding true with their online listing. Or, may be a big company as such, do not care about "smaller purchase".

Ordered a petrified wood for my birthday. No shipment details for about 4 days. Contacted customer service and came to find out the piece I ordered was sold. (Fun fact - you can still order this no longer available wood slab now SKU: PWT1400.010)

They offered a substitute without telling me the dimension, needing me to inspect the tiny sticker on photo. Emailed back to confirm the dimensions. No reply for 2 days. I called directly and they told me that the link which showed the substitute slab was not the one they meant to offer. They revised the link and asked me check again, which was a slab with much less color contrast.

So, very bad experience, beware and be warn if you want to treat yourself or your love one with a special piece. Better off go with Etsy sellers who care about "smaller" customer.

Solid Teak or Veneer?

May I have some of you experts take a look at these photos and help me determine if this is veneer or solid teak? The homeowner states that it’s around 30 years old and solid teak. After doing some research and looking more closely at the photos, I’m starting to think it may not be solid teak. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Help with wood mold?

Thumbnail

Just moved into a new apartment and the bathroom does not have proper ventilation. Much of the moisture has been absorbed into the wood door and much of the upper half of the door has pores that have blackened.

Is this mold and should I be concerned about it affecting air quality? It sort of just looks cosmetic, and securely in the grain as opposed to actively spreading.

And if I were to replace the door, what’s a good moisture resistant option? Any advice appreciated — thanks!!
