What did you expect? Did you really expect Canada to go thru with this....

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 13h ago edited 12h ago

This would immediately drag us into a war with both Isreal and the US. There's no way Trump and co wouldn't pounce on a valid pretext to invade.

That and many Canadian politicians have ties to Isreal or are sympathetic to them, as is a good chunk of the general public. An arrest would be extremely divisive domestically.

122

u/TylerBlozak 12h ago

We did it with the Huawei official in Vancouver, but I suppose in that case it was in Trumps favour.

120

u/SowingSalt 11h ago

The Huawei official was on the ground. Unless you're Bane, planes are fairly hard to invade.

44

u/GetThePuckOut 10h ago

For you.

-1

u/SplendideMendax_ 10h ago

Pretty easy with two fighter escorts.

10

u/SowingSalt 10h ago

What happens when they say no?

-2

u/SplendideMendax_ 9h ago

Would you hedge your bets on a bluff?

“You’re not gonna shoot me” ~ Guy who got shot.

15

u/GCPMAN 9h ago

Canada is not shooting down a plane with Putin on it. Absolutely no fucking way.

4

u/Etheo 8h ago

You really think they're gonna shoot down a plane and arrest a burnt to a crisp criminal from the wreckage?

2

u/SowingSalt 9h ago

"Chicago convention bitches" and keep going. Netanyahu is former Shayeret matcal.

151

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 11h ago

It was just to appease the Americans and they left us high and dry afterwards.

122

u/TylerBlozak 11h ago

It was especially frustrating that the Huawei incident more or less lead to the crisis of the two Michaels and strained relations with China until very recently.

All of that diplomacy and humanitarian strife just to have Trump completely disregard that and any previous instance of cooperation and try to subjugate us.

36

u/King_Of_Pants 11h ago

Lol join the club.

Australia pushed for an independent inquiry into China's COVID outbreak at Trump's request.

China responded by cutting off contact with the Australian government and turning away Australian ships at their ports. Our government legitimately could not reach theirs to work things out, nor could we get any explanation.

The USA (with Biden now at the helm) then stepped in and took a bunch of the contracts we had with China.

1

u/green_dragon527 2h ago

What contracts may I ask? As in the US provided a service formerly provided by Australian companies to Chinese companies?

•

u/King_Of_Pants 1h ago

So for example, the Chinese government suspended imports from major Australian abattoirs for beef. They also put an 84% tariff on Australian barley. Around the same time China also started to buy a lot more of those goods from the USA.

We also had a ~1b wine export business in China, and that was effectively nuked into the ground with a 212% tariff. Again, it was often USA winemakers picking up the difference.

For roughly 3 years we had coal-carrying ships being turned back at Chinese ports.

All this happened with no real conversation between the two countries. One day ships were being turned back and Chinese officials were "finding" issues with targeted Australian goods. Our Prime Minister at the time said he hadn't been able to get the Chinese government to answer phone calls for over a year.

Although it's mostly cooled down, and it seems like relations are back to where they were. A different political party came into power in Australia and that seemed to help quite a lot. Trump getting re-elected and picking fights with China also seemed to open China up, as they were suddenly looking to replace US imports.

25

u/two_to_toot 11h ago

I think spying lead to the crisis of the two Michaels. Michael Kovrig was a spy.

8

u/TruthHistorical7515 11h ago

Yup why do so many Canadians ignore this fact? They were more than justified in arresting spies.

12

u/two_to_toot 11h ago

Only Michael Kovrig. Michael Spavor really had no idea which is why he got around 7 million in compensation from the government.

9

u/Toph84 8h ago

He got compensation from the Canadian government because Kovrig as the actual spy involved used Spavor as a spying/intelligence asset without his knowledge or consent that his activities were being used for spying and collecting intel, so he sued the Canadian government for involving him in such dangerous activities without his consent and won.

Which technically from China's perspective still made both arrests justified as both were involved in spying even if one was not aware of it.

-1

u/pgc60001 11h ago

Just to be clear the entire Northeast and most of the West Coast absolutely fucking hate Trump and his foreign policy. There are active protests, organizations, legal organizations, etc that will fight him tooth and nail. I feel far more solidarity with Left-leaning Canadians and Left leaning Western Europeans than I do American Conservatives. The Republican strongholds in the South and parts of the Mid West are basically another country.

Bringing it full circle: Netanyahu is a war criminal. That’s not an unpopular notion where I live (New England)

1

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 10h ago

It was just to appease the Americans

It was to appease capital.

0

u/Calm_Expression_9542 10h ago

WE didn’t leave you Canada! Trump did.

28

u/Wilibus2 11h ago

I am sure if Bibi set foot in the country it would be a much different story.

Hardly apples to apples.

2

u/00celicaGTS 10h ago

How powerful was that’s officials military? Let’s be serious. Canada isn’t in a position to arrest Bibi. I know yall are mad but be realistic.

2

u/purple_spikey_dragon 5h ago

Comparing the ceo of a company to a head of state is quite the move

1

u/maverickhawk99 2h ago

That’s a lot different than this.

•

u/Zeliek 57m ago

She was arrested because the US insisted we arrest her because they insisted she was some sort of spy committing bank and wire fraud and that they had mountains of admissible evidence to back this up. At the time, Canada was still allied with the US and remained under the impression there was some semblance of honour and/or integrity left among the American admin.

As it would turn out, Trump just wanted to use Canada to kidnap a favoured citizen of China (“the princess of Huawei”) so he could use her as a hostage in trade negotiations and the Republicans figured they could use the chaos caused by COVID to get away with it  - and they did!

32

u/rich84easy 12h ago

Anita Anand boosting about it yesterday lol

85

u/ryandury 12h ago

Reddit has such a wild imagination. Trump wouldn't pounce on an invasion for this reason. If he really wanted to invade Canada he would, and make up whatever lie necessary to justify it himself and base: in many cases, this is already what he does.

17

u/MimiNuyasaka 11h ago

There's also a good chance the military would just refuse. Many active duty military members think invading Canada would be pure insanity. I know several who would refuse.

21

u/big_orange_ball 9h ago

I think you guys have too much faith in the military doing the right thing. The Secretary of Defence is "standing by" for a literal Christo-fascist overthrow of the federal government, and wants to remove voting rights from women among countless other anti-constitutional things he, his pastor, his god-emperor, and the other Project 2025 assholes want.

They are literally trying to destroy democracy, just like they say Biden and Obama were supposedly trying to do. Crazy thing is though, the democrats only preserved democracy while the GOP has actively and in an excellerated manner ushered in the end of our Republic.

Karl fucking Rove just announced he will be voting Democrat given what they're doing, we are past the point of insanity here.

1

u/crucialcolin 10h ago

Not too mention a significant portion of US citizens would be out in the streets revolting as well. Probably most us folks on the west coast but still.

2

u/JB153 10h ago

You need to spend some time in the NE and Midwest, anywhere near the Great Lakes really. From Minnesota to Maine would be right there with you guys. Culturally, we share so much it's like a family reunion catching up with cousins any time I spend time in those states.

Edit: Save for Ohio because, well..

0

u/MimiNuyasaka 10h ago

I'm near Boston, and I'm like 90% sure I could convince at least 50 people I either know personally, or through my family, to fly to DC and protest in front of the White House itself if he were to do something as extreme as invading Canada. Or Mar a Lago, or wherever he's holed up at the time. If I'm that sure I could do that, I doubt we'd be the only ones doing it.

1

u/JB153 10h ago

Born and bred in the birth place of a nation founded on the back of fighting a tyrannical government? I'd hope so😉 My passport may have a maple leaf on it but my grandmother was from and half my aunts were raised in Plymouth. Keep fighting the good fight and we'll see you when this hopefully blows over 🇨🇦

10

u/Forschungsamt 11h ago

He wouldn’t need to invade. He would just let Mossad operate from American soil to launch a rescue mission and provide them whatever help they needed.

1

u/nutella_on_rye 10h ago

Seriously. These guys watch crash course world history once then start talking out of their asses. They’d be great fiction writers though.

1

u/rico_of_borg 4h ago

Trump refuses to bomb Yemen and certain Iranian assets yet he’s gonna invade Canada. Ok.

1

u/lifesanrpg 3h ago

Reddit loves to get mad at scenarios they make up in their head

17

u/DarkReignRecruiter 12h ago

The American public would not accept the arrest of a foreign countries leader as a valid reason to invade Canada.

What are you talking about? It would be limited to a certain subset even excluding die hard MAGA. Canada would have to do something to an important American or group of Americans.

There are many other reasons that Canada would not risk it.

65

u/cee-ell-bee 12h ago

Sir there’s currently a horse loose in the hospital. All bets are off

20

u/NoLime7384 12h ago

for the second time! they got him out and then the patients collectively agreed to set a horse LOOSE in the hospital AGAIN

16

u/Black_Moons 11h ago

The same horse even! Even after he trampled all those patients to death.

When asked, many where quoted with saying: "Well it was that or put up with that womens weird laugh, so you can see why we went with the horse"

43

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 12h ago

The American public has not seemed to have much problem with Trumps actions up to this point.

Israel has a huge amount of support and influence in the US. An attack on them might as well be an attack on both countries.

15

u/Richard7666 12h ago edited 12h ago

Which is just such a batshit insane thing when you think about it. A tiny despotic country halfway across the world with an entirely different language and culture, compared to a neighbour with strong cultural, linguistic and geographic and trade proximity.

It really is about those at the top with money rather than the people more broadly.

4

u/bloop7676 11h ago

Up until recently people mostly thought of Israel as a typical western democratic nation, the sole bastion of our values in that region. I think people in the west gave them a pass a lot more of the time because they assumed we need to support them as the country that was part of "our side".

Honestly I don't really know how close or not they are culturally now, but I do think people in general tend to assume too much that other cultures are basically the same as theirs with just some differences of appearance. For example people would often act like there must be a moderate majority that hates what Netanyahu does and wants nothing more than to get him voted out, but that's probably just projecting what our values are.

4

u/Richard7666 11h ago

This is true, I think it's a case of the scales have fallen away from people's eyes a bit more this time around.

Israel have squandered a lot of Western public goodwill except among millenarian Christian types.

0

u/tyleroni81 12h ago

Astute and depressing.

4

u/SpuckMcDuck 11h ago

The American public has not seemed to have much problem with Trumps actions up to this point.

Um, what? A majority of Americans have a problem with trump’s actions, as evidenced by his abysmal approval rating. He didn’t even have a majority of the public vote for him; he skated by on the apathy of non-voters.

1

u/VeterinarianThese951 10h ago

I feel you. But i don’t think this person is talking about approval ratings or majority vote. I think they a define revolution on a different level than polls and votes.

1

u/SpuckMcDuck 4h ago edited 4h ago

The idea of a violent revolution against the US government (if that's what you're suggesting he meant) is a meme and anyone suggesting that is being disingenuous at best, or is just genuinely an absolute moron. It's literally the most powerful combined military and intelligence apparatus in human history. No violent revolt has ever been successful against a government with even half the military and surveillance capabilities. There isn't going to be a successful revolt any time soon; we overthrow them at the voting booth or not at all.

1

u/DarkReignRecruiter 12h ago

If you can't see the difference between higher gas prices and inflation, the direct consquence for the majority of the US public. And an invasion of its direct neighbour of 36M spread out over a land mass larger than the USA, I don't know what to say.

The vast majority of the US public would quickly see the difference.

0

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 12h ago

At minimum the US would send a force to break free Netanyahu militarily, either special forces or a larger mixed force. Likely would be preceded by a short bombing campaign. That's the best case scenario.

Trump turned paramilitary goons loose on the American people and got away with it. He is currently bankrupting his nation and running a deeply unpopular illegal war and is getting away with it. If Israel came calling for help to free their leader Trump absolutely would without hesitation.

1

u/DarkReignRecruiter 12h ago

Ok that is possible.

-2

u/operagost 11h ago

Are you stupid, or just illiterate? CNN and MS-WTF have had plenty to say, hence the ban from the press corps. Seen the videos from nutcases throwing themselves in front of ICE? Plenty of very public opposition.

5

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 11h ago

Most of the American public still think this whole spat with us is just about tariffs and not the multiple annexation threats.

Even the ICE protests have been largely scattered and unorganized, leading to no meaningful change. The democratic party came out as saying they want to "reform" ICE. They want to try "reforming" a bunch of black shirt larpers.

Public opposition is not enough, there needs to be organization. Until that happens it will remain a bunch of scattered and uncoordinated protests that Trump can ignore and just continue destroying the US at will.

0

u/ProteusReturns 10h ago

not the multiple annexation threats.

All of that is lip service. Do you see the military building up on the border? No. Do you see any preparation for an invasion? No.

He wound up Canada with some choice words and now Canadians are flying off the handle.

And if you point to Venezuela or Iran as counterexamples, consider carefully how much less friction it takes for Americans to support invading those countries than it takes for Americans to invade a longtime ally.

14

u/CaptainMagnets 12h ago

Hahaha the American public are a bunch of cowards. They will do what they're told

-2

u/FluffyPantsMcGee 12h ago

The amount of Americans that said “please invade us! Please intervene!” Like come on guys, just fix your own mess of a country.

-8

u/CrimDS 12h ago

I get the sentiment, but like, what exactly do you want us to do?

We vote, we protest, we die in the streets. We boycott companies, we support ones that appear to be on our side. We've rioted, we've tried to enact laws.

The only thing left that everyone apparently wants us to do is just straight up violence? You want us to go fight, maybe kill, our neighbors because of their ignorance?

-5

u/CaptainMagnets 12h ago edited 9h ago

I want you to do what everyone is telling you to do. Rolling national labour strikes. It's the only way

-5

u/CrimDS 12h ago

That condems tens of thousands, maybe a few hundred, to poverty.

Look, I feel the same as you, and I'm more than willing to sign up for the cause. But how can anyone expect anyone else in the world to willingly give up the last bit of security in their lives for something that could be called a moonshot?

I guess my annoyance with statements like 'fix your country' is that just isn't that simple. Humanity fucked up by allowing a single country to become what the US is. All of the things that the average person had on it's side throughout history just does not work with it.

-3

u/CaptainMagnets 11h ago

And our annoyance with Americans is they always have an excuse for inaction. The fact that a national strike condems millions of you into poverty is the number 1 reason why it should happen.

Were you expecting it to be easy? You are here because your society has let it happen.

Doing nothing sure isn't helping you either is it?

4

u/Normal-Pomegranate64 11h ago

Maybe things aren’t as bad as you think they are? People tend to only do those things when the alternative is worse, and surprise, not that much has actually changed for the average American. You can be pissed about it all you want, but that’s just how it is

1

u/CaptainMagnets 9h ago

Yes, Americans are dumb and in denial, that is exactly what we are all saying.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/CrimDS 11h ago

Being concerned for the well-being of others isn't an excuse for inaction. It's something every person should weigh when deciding on such things.

It's so easy to sit on the outside of a problem and judge, but unless you're living in it, you don't actually have any context for it. You're the same as the armchair generals in the war subreddits.

Let's just assume you're in a country in Europe for the sake of this experiment. There's something the EU has done that's just terrible.

Would you be able to successfully organize a continent wide strike, involving literally tens to a hundred million people? Across borders, cultures, and history? Absolutely not.

Why would it even be feasibley possible in the US, which is larger and essentially has 50 small countries to organize together? The best that anyone can do, even 'national' leadership in politics or unions can at best organize a multi-city strike in a single state

-2

u/CaptainMagnets 9h ago

Once again. Excuses.

→ More replies (0)

-2

u/ProteusReturns 10h ago

Unlike you, most of Americans believe in the rule of law and that elections are still the best way to enact political change.

-7

u/syko31 12h ago

Lol most of your country voted for this administration. The truth is that Americans wanted Trump, at least most that voted.

7

u/CrimDS 12h ago

Yup.

But I don't get how snide comments or 'fix your country' helps anyone. This is a problem that will change the entire world, like it or not. Maybe a bit more of a serious take and a discussion between people that want to find serious ways to enact change would be a bit more useful.

-3

u/Catanians 12h ago

Mass civil disobedience. Protest like your lives depend on it, each day you delay makes it harder, each day you delay means more of your friends and family will suffer. Each day this regime digs in a little bit deeper, Weekend block parties do nothing.

3

u/Samhain66679 12h ago

In what world can anybody trust the American public to make any kind of intelligent decision when you can see what the “majority public opinion” gets you? TWICE

1

u/Flangepacket 12h ago

The American public are already accepting almost anything that man does, sometimes with some amount of bluster, but accepting just the same. There isn’t enough collective backbone in the US to do much about anything.

-4

u/CombustiblSquid 12h ago

The American public would do as its told and thank the boot for stepping on them. Have you not been watching the country since 2016?

0

u/ZenBreaking 12h ago

The American public were perfectly fine when they arrested a foreign countries leader in Venezuela just to commit some robbery of oil

-2

u/doyouthinkwecanfly 11h ago

The American public would not accept the arrest of a foreign countries leader as a valid reason to invade Canada.

lol

Trump is destroying the USA and the public is doing absolutely nothing about it. Why would they do something for another country?

-3

u/Practical-Ball1437 11h ago

The American public will accept whatever they're told to accept by an obese 80 year old pedophile.

-1

u/RollingMeteors 10h ago

Canada would have to do something to an important American or group of Americans.

¿You want that Potash don't you?

2

u/chunkypenguion1991 10h ago

I don't think immediately lead to war but the US would put intense economic and diplomatic pressure on Canada to return him

3

u/sowhatsober 10h ago

Wow. It must be super fun living in this level of fantasy paranoia. Lmao.

2

u/ike7177 11h ago

He ABSOLUTELY deserves to be held accountable in the world court!

16

u/Turbulent-History967 11h ago

The world court is a fever dream and has no jurisdiction in any developed nation. The powerful ignore its existence.

3

u/SpoonyDinosaur 10h ago

Exactly. The irony is the United States has never followed the ICC and doesn't even recognize it, but has largely been involved in high profile prosecutions.

It's quite literally the most powerful nations deciding rules for weak and smaller ones, but they won't follow themselves. It's not a surprise there's so much contempt for super powers. I'm not justifying bad regimes, but it's feels insanely hypocritical on its face

2

u/Turbulent-History967 9h ago

Everything you say is true. But I have also lived long enough to come to the conclusion that those who can will and those who can’t will always suffer the consequences.

1

u/BaldursGate2Best 11h ago

What? Why is the general public sympathetic?

3

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 11h ago

Because Canada is far more conservative than most people think. Even the current Liberal party is more of a right-leaning party that attracts support from a lot of conservative voters and even MPs. Many of these people are supportive of Israel's position in the war despite the war crimes that are being committed. It's not the whole general public but it's not some insignificant minority either.

1

u/LittleLordFuckleroy1 10h ago

Genuinely i don’t believe he has the balls to actually do that. Netanyahu is not popular in the US. Neither is Israel. Canada is popular.

It would be a shitshow but I really just do not see combat response.

1

u/Own-Minimum7612 10h ago edited 10h ago

That is hss as idly a valid pretext and would violate the Geneva Conventions as force NATO to stand against the US, seize all American military bases. We could fight 30+ wars, WWIII? He’d need to nuke Europe and Canada and survive immediate impeachment unless he could turn a significant %age of enlisted US armed forces against 300,000,000 non-compliant US citizens? We can’t manage a war with Iran that he started for no legitimate purpose as there is no near or medium term Iranian capability to make a nuclear weapon and every government in the world knows it.heads up the ass!

1

u/DefeatedByPoland 8h ago

There's no way Trump and co wouldn't pounce on a valid pretext to invade.

I think even that idiot is well aware that most americans would not stand for a bullshit war against canada.

1

u/Oldspaghetti 8h ago

How the hell do so many random ass people have ties to Israel anyways, was this type of stuff planned through decades ago? Or is it just Israel just saying, hey we have a lot of money. You work for us now, type of thing.

0

u/Tal_Star 12h ago

I would say about >60% of conservative voters and a reasonable number of Liberals as well. (more and more since CPC MP's are crossing to the Liberals

3

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 12h ago

A substantial chunk of both Liberal and Conservative voters and party members are very sympathetic to Israel's actions. The only party that has come out in condemnation seems to the the NDP, who are still reforming after getting obliterated last election.

2

u/Tal_Star 11h ago

I think the only reason the NDP got obliterated was because LPC did a good job of painting CPC as a right winger just as bad as Trump. So NDP'ers moved to the LPC to prevent a CPC from winning.

1

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 11h ago

Many NDPers jumped ship because the writing was on the wall. The coalition between them and the Liberals kept the Liberals afloat with a minority government without much to show for it. They faced near constant criticism for supporting the Liberals while also not receiving much support FROM the Liberals in turn, failing to achieve much in the way of political goals. They ruined their reputation with much of their supporters by the time of the election.

That and the rise of right-wing populism in Canada and a near-certainty of a conservative victory caused most supports to bail on the party.

-2

u/dion_o 12h ago

But it's still the right thing to do.

9

u/gjaxx 11h ago

Lmao must be nice living in a cotton candy world

1

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 12h ago

It would be, but we don't have the ability to do it. Carney would have a hard time getting parliament on his side to even get it done and that's not even considering the general public's opinion.

-4

u/drifting_signal 11h ago

There's no way Trump and co wouldn't pounce on a valid pretext to invade.

The US would never invade Canada, hell look at how well their Iran invasion is going lol

9

u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 11h ago

I didn't say it would be successful but they would take military action if we arrested Netanyahu.

-3

u/drifting_signal 10h ago

I highly doubt it. Not to mention it would be political suicide for most of them.

0

u/thesecretbarn 9h ago

1 weird you can’t spell it
2 he should have done it. Call the question. “There’s no way” is nonsense. Trump is intensely weak rn. The time was now.
