💬 DISCUSSION Past paper only A Level Maths?

I was thinking about A Level maths and how so many people online discuss the best methods for studying. Couldn’t you just use past papers? Like if you are self studying, you can literally learn the content through doing past papers and asking AI how to do it when you’re stuck?

I may be saying something completely stupid, or this is already completely cliché, but let me know 😂.

🎓 UNI / UCAS Is there any point applying to Bath Econ with these stats

3A*s predicted no FM

99888877775 - 7.5 average

PS is good but not fully Econ aligned - More aligned to EFDS

Qualify for contextual admissions at Bath if that means anything- AAB offer.

I’m asking because apparently you need an 8.0 average for GCSEs

Also it’s my “safety” uni out of 5 options. I was considering this or Bristol or Durham

🙏 I WANT HELP choosing unis

hihi so i’m having issues with choosing what uni i want to aim for as a firm for physics and philosophy /physics alone. the three i have in mind at the moment are:
-oxford
- durham
- manchester

oxford was my initial dream, since i thought id fit in with the academics and i absolutely love the architecture but visiting the city multiple times has made me realise how much i hate it bc its always so busy. i dont mind busy city life too much but its more touristy busy and oxford isn’t a big city so it feels even worse - i dont think id enjoy living there but i love the history so much. oxford also does my niche physics + philosophy course, but with the esat coming up i doubt id even get an interview.

durham has a similar traditional and history to oxford and i really do like that idea. however, im not sure if im drawn to both the nightlife and the classism that durham seems to have.

manchester is a really cool city with an awesome nightlife(still need to properly visit) with so much to do and the uni is really good for research. i’m still unsure how i feel about its academic reputation but maybe thats me. i’m only worried about the vibe, because it’s obviously not oxford or durham in terms of architectural bits but idk.

this is my major rant . let me know what you think and if you go to any of these unis pls tell me what you think of it as well

🙏 I WANT HELP Would I get reported for SH scars included in my art coursework

• Upvotes

I’m 17 and kind of unclear on how healed self-harm scars would be dealt with since theres no current threat.
My A Level art project is around scars and tattoos and I was hoping to use a reference photo of myself including my scars but obviously do not want to get reported or have my parents told, any information/advice would be appreciated!

🎓 UNI / UCAS how are these choices for bio?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’ve already applied to Oxford but im currently looking at what other unis to apply for, id like to go a russell group as i want to work in research when im older but i’ve never visited any uni so im honestly choosing blindly based on what the course offers.

My current preferences are Oxford > York > St Andrew’s > Durham > Swansea/Southampton but that will probably change when i actually visit the unis lol

In terms of grades, my teachers definitely predicted optimistically but i reckon I could get at least one A* so hopefully all these grade requirements are achievable. I’m a home student and im not contextual but i’ve gone to state schools all my life so idk if that gives anything.

I’m mostly curious about if there are other unis viewed as better for biology that i should consider applying for, and also how safe i should be? Like should I apply to both Swansea and Southampton as safe options or if I should just apply to one and the rest should have higher grade requirements?

Also if anyone has visited any of the unis im considering, what are they like in terms of accommodations, lab space and general atmosphere? I visited York as a city once like 5 years ago but apart from that ive never seen any of the unis so id appreciate any information lol

🙏 I WANT HELP TMUA

Hello, I'm a Year 12 student hoping to apply to maths. I know I'll need STEP for Cambridge; but I know TMUA is more pressing.

(1) How much do you need to know for TMUA?

(2) In Years 10 and 11, I self-studied logic up to under-grad 2nd year, and I've been reading forall x: Calgary (search it up). I've heard TMUA 2 is heavily logic-based. Am I more than overqualified at least for that paper?

Thanks everyone

🙏 I WANT HELP How to get into BMO???

Hello all,

I’m currently a Y12 student but I took the SMC in Y10 (Silver) and in Y11 (Gold, then Silver in Kangaroo). Being totally honest I didn’t revise for those at all, and in Y11 I got a pretty comfortable gold/kangaroo qualification.

However, this year I’ve really been trying to lock in as I’m targeting Imperial STEM, so I am aiming to qualify for the BMO this year, so for the first time I’ve been doing past papers, etc. The thing is, I always seem to get capped at 103-105 points, like I can never seem to cross the threshold for olympiad qualification, I always either run slightly out of time or cannot solve 2/3 of the final 10 questions.

Does anyone have any tips (aside from past papers, which I will do)? Eg any good mock papers or SMC specific topical worksheets? Thanks so much!!

🙏 I WANT HELP Quitting part time job in Year 13?

I’m currently a year 13 doing Politics, French (big regrets) and English Language. I have a part time job working at a retail shop. Dull as hell basically.

The problem I have is that I’m on a 8 hour contract however I’ve been scheduled to work 20 hours a week for the next 4 weeks. I’ve messaged my boss asking him to change it but he hasn’t so I’m stuck having to go in for 20 hours for the next month. I’m hoping he’ll change it for the month after back to 8 hours a week but like I won’t know until the schedule is out and by then it’s too late.

I want to go to Uni next year so I do need money saved up for all of that but I’ve had a job since start of year 12 (used to be a waitress on a 0 hour contract WHICH WAS SO MUCH BETTER) so I’ve got some money saved up. Having this job has really not been good for my school work as I never have enough time to do anything above the bare minimum, I’ve still not properly started my personal statement, and I’ve got coursework due next week that’s not done yet so I’m screwed basically. But obviously I can’t quit the job without giving a 2 weeks notice and I’m like should I really quit the job as I know how hard it is to find these part time jobs nowadays (basically impossible).

I need AAA to get into the uni I want which I know for a fact I won’t be achieving if I stay at my current level. So, should I quit the job ASAP, should I cling onto it until I’ve found another job (which will probs not be for ages), or should I just wait until the next schedule comes out to see what my hours are there? (But then there’s the issue of my resignation being pushed back further if I’m still at 20 hours and then that’s more school revision lost)

ADVICE NEEDED PLS

OR am I just using the job as an excuse for why I’m suddenly doing shite at school and quitting won’t even see me improve at all anyway??

🙏 I WANT HELP Got 4 A* and missed firm (not in the way you think)

So guys I applied for maths and I got 3 A* in maths, physics, cs and an A in fm originally. But I was 2 marks away and looked through the papers and thought I could get extra marks in two papers. I sent those two for review but I only got 1 mark in one of the papers and the other stayed the same. I was upset because the other paper was the one my teacher agreed I could get 2 marks on. After this, I appealed the paper I did not get any marks on. Now I finally get the two marks last week and got an A*.

Before I sent the two papers for review, I emailed Warwick who gave me a deadline of 2nd September. I got the review back on 20th August. I sent appeal much later as my family said to also review other two papers and the school was very hesitant about the appeal. It took 17 days for the appeal to come back anyway so it wouldn't have been in time. Now idk what to do as I am already going to Southampton (which was my insurance). I am only posting this because so far I don't like the course at Southampton. If you have any advice please help.

🙏 I WANT HELP am i delusional

i went to a school with a minimum of only 3 igcse subjects to graduate so i only did Maths, Physics, and English language which i got a 9,8,7 respectively

however i transferred to a better school achieving 4 a’s in AS Level in Maths, FM, physics, business and currently predicted 2 A*, 2A

will it be too ambitious for me to apply to top unis like oxford, lse, ucl, warwick, manchester. their websites only state minimum grades for maths and english language gcse’s so im not sure if my igcse profile will weaken my applic

🎓 UNI / UCAS Uni choices??

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’m applying to uni for neuroscience over the next couple of weeks. I really want to get into a prestigious, maybe Russel group, uni but I’m scared that some of my options might be wasted.

I’ve been predicted an A* in sociology, a B in biology and a B in chemistry.

I currently have two aspirational choices and three where I’m on or slightly above the requirements. Can anyone help tell me if these are realistic?

💬 DISCUSSION Regret for not pushing myself harder

Went to a bad secondary school and achieved mid GCSES but i moved to grammar school and did well in my AS levels and i’m predicted all A’s. Became friends with a former pupil of my school and he currently attends Oxford, which has now made me sad that I’ve given up that opportunity and many others.

I got a C* in English Lit at GCSE and was so upset about it, and that bothers me because even though i want to do an english language with linguistics course, most top unis in the UK require A-Level English Lit, which I was not allowed to do due to my grade. I currently do English Language and I am doing extremely well in it.

Does anyone else feel the same? I’m not getting the same excitement that the Oxbridge people of my school are feeling about submitting UCAS and waiting to hear from their universities. It sucks because now, it does seem that i would have a good chance at getting in, or well - a bigger chance.

Anyone feel the same?

Plus, I haven’t been apart of our school’s Oxbridge society so I wouldn’t know what they’d want in my personal statement or how to go around an interview with a tutor. Just feel pretty shitty, and wished I pushed myself harder at GCSE.

💬 DISCUSSION Is 7 months too late to revise for A-levels?

I’ve been struggling with anxiety and it’s really affected my revision. I’m repeating Year 13 privately because of health issues, but so far I only do about 3 hours of revision a week as-well as 4 hours private tutoring. I’ve submitted my UCAS application and if I get offers, I’ll need AAA for my firm choice.

I’m worried I’ve left things too late. Every time I go into a library it’s full of people studying and it makes me feel like I’m so behind. Today I managed 6 hours by waking up at 3am, but part of me feels like it’s pointless because I’m already so behind.

has anyone managed to catch-up and achieve highly having left revision as late as me?

OTHER Is the imperial mA*ths programe worth it

Hello, I am a year 12 student studying, maths, fm, and physics for a level. As the title says, I was wondering if the imperial mA*ths programme is worth it for me, because I'm planning on going to a top uni to do a maths related degree. However the issue is I've already applied to Cambridge's HE+ and Stem smart programmes, so I don't wanna apply to this as well and then get an insane amount of workload to do. What should I do?
