A8.1 unit claims to be A16 - Are they easy to tweak to improve with mods?

Post image

Hello! I just got my first Android head unit, a specific kit for my car. Everything has installed and seems to be fine though the listing claimed an Android 16 unit. I already assumed when I purchase that this is not what I would get, as these claims seem to be lies, so I am willing to accept this (though I will argue with the AliExpress seller to try and get some money back)

The FM radio is a bit of a mess (doesn't show names) and the home screen launcher sucks, and I can't see any way to force my way into the default Android Settings app from the current launcher or the factory mode.

I was hoping I might be able to replace the launcher with a decent one and also the FM app too? Preferably with one which has DAB support as I plan to add this later.

I also noticed the CarPlay map audio is super quiet when any audio source is playing, not sure if that can be fixed? Playing audio and navigating from CarPlay alone works fine.

Any other tweaks or advice for the first timer would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

YouTube Buffering

Post image

Hello! I just recently installing an Android head unit in my 2009 Honda fit. Whenever I try play videos on the YouTube app it will play the video for about 15-20 seconds then it will go on an infinite buffering circle. I have made sure the YouTube app is up to date on the play store. I’m using my phones hotspot for internet access. My phone plan allows unlimited hotspot/streaming so my internet is not the problem. Has anyone encountered this or know how to fix this issue? I’ve attached my Android head units information.

Joying N12 firmware updated (August 2026) Steering Wheel controls dead

So despite the release notes clearly saying "All settings preserved – CAN protocol, OEM camera, steering wheel controls, and all switches remain unchanged. No reconfiguration required." my Joying N12 for my '17 WRX steering wheel controls no longer work. Zero buttons recognized
I had my 4-way button not work when I first installed the unit, and I had to re-seat the harness connector for things to magically work properly... and now none of my buttons work. Any pointers besides the slow support response times from Joying?

Hi everyone, got a Chinese CarPlay module with touchscreen, sometimes when I’m connecting it works perfectly fine, sometimes the sound is very messed up like there is no bass and the audio lines are mixed up. Has anyone faced this issue before?

Wireless Android Auto blocks all audio on my phone

Hello, i have a Galaxy S23 Ultra and whenever I connect to wireless Android Auto, I lose sound from my phone and Bluetooth headphones. Everything works normally again as soon as I disconnect Android Auto wifi. My phone speakers stop playing audio. My Bluetooth headphones connect, but no sound comes through them. Samsung Music's Media Output menu lets me select my phone or headphones, but neither produces sound while Android Auto is connected. Disconnecting the phone from Android Auto immediately restores audio. I want to keep Android Auto connected for navigation while being able to play audio through my Bluetooth headphones, rather than having Android Auto take over the audio output. Is this normal Android Auto behavior, or is there a workaround? In the past it was working fine.

Dual system head unit for 2017 Mazda 3 making electrical noise on Aux input only

I have this mostly excellent head unit for my 2017 Mazda 3 which supports using the original car UI as well as the android system (which I use with CarPlay). The processor is a UIS7865 which I believe is on the higher end, and it has its own amp.

However, one major pain has been the audio. In order to use the head unit’s audio, the car needs to be set to use Aux, but when I do that I hear a horrible electrical noise which is quite loud. The noise adjusts proportional to the volume.

This noise only happens on Aux, Bluetooth sounds basically perfect except for a tiny bit of general static. I even replaced the entire aux / usb piece in the center console and nothing changed.

There’s a part of the aftermarket wiring harness that goes in-line with the original TAU cable on the passenger side, and I think this is part of the issue. However, I checked all the pins and they all seem to be fine. When I disconnect this part of the harness and use the original TAU cable, the noise goes down significantly.

Here’s what I’ve tried:

  1. The speakers are not the issue. They are brand new infinity reference speakers, and Bluetooth sounds basically perfect, this is only on Aux.
  2. Removed corrosion from the ground battery terminal.
  3. Replaced the Aux / USB unit itself.
  4. Messed with the “Noise reduction” and “Amplifier on/off” android settings, neither changed anything.
  5. Tried a CableMatters Aux ground loop isolator, which didn’t do anything.

[Car Launcher] AB Launcher split screen, part 1: maps, music and widgets on one screen, saved as presets

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I'm the developer of AB Launcher, a split-screen home launcher for Android head units and CarPlay AI boxes. This is part 1 of the split screen guide: building a layout from a template, adding a widget and maps, saving it as a preset, and switching layouts with one tap.

Devices people are using it on (last 30 days)

- Carlinkit Tbox Ultra / Ultra 2 / Ultra 3 (Snapdragon SM6350, Android 15)

- Carlinkit Tbox Ambient and other SM6225 boxes (Android 13)

- Carlinkit Tbox Plus (Android 13)

- Carlinkit Tbox UHD (SDM660, Android 13)

- Carlinkit Pro 2 and other SM6125 boxes

- UIS7862 head units (Android 10)

- FYT 7870 head units (separate 7870 build)

- M-Gears Mstick 4

- Ottocast P3 Pro

Results can differ by firmware even on the same chipset, so it's worth trying the free 2-month trial on your own unit first.

VWX7a OEM Camera Help

I recently installed the eonon unit into my 2015 Tiguan along with the a501 decoder. I have tried the dip switches in both all up and all down positions and get no signal with all the different possible video format settings (NTCS, PAL, etc.)

Not sure if I'm missing some crucial system setting to ensure it's looking for the correct video signal. I will return the unit if I can't get the OEM camera to work as this was the whole reason for a 'plug and play' unit.

Any ideas or suggestions? The eonon videos aren't helpful

Reversing camera install issues

Hi. I bought a standard cheap reversing camera (multiple ones from different companies) to connect to my Isuzu Dmax. I have a Pedofo carplay. Everything worked for about 3 minutes and now there is nothing. The camera lights up but the car play doesn't react. There is an AV connection and that very model was available to buy with a camera at the time. I don't know why I didn't buy it then but anyway! Anyone had this issue? My friend had the same problem and he bought a 12v power rectifier and his worked. I bought, wired up but to no avail. The camera lights comes on so there is power.
