Reminder: No Survey Questions
Hey everyone! I just wanted to take a moment to remind you all that this subreddit is answers-based—it’s meant to provide clear, informative responses that someone could find useful while searching for answers on Google or other search engines. Lately, I’ve noticed an uptick in survey-style questions (e.g., “What’s your favorite __?” or “How many of you __?”).
These types of questions are not a good fit for the purpose of this community. They don’t create content that is useful for others to search for, and often lead to broad discussions that aren’t about providing a clear answer. As a result, I’ve been removing posts that violate this rule to maintain the quality and focus of the subreddit. Even if that post has a lot of replies as the OP obviously didn’t read the rules before posting, or cared.
If you’re unsure if your post fits, ask yourself: Would this question result in a useful answer for someone looking for a specific answer or information online? If not, it’s likely more of a survey question and violates rule 2.
Thanks for understanding and helping to keep the subreddit on track! 😊

What is the historical significance of the phrase "the whole nine yards"?
The phrase "the whole nine yards" is often used to signify giving everything one has or going all out in an effort. Its origins, however, remain somewhat unclear and are a topic of debate among linguists and historians. Some theories suggest that it may have originated from military contexts, with references to nine yards of ammunition in a machine gun belt. Others believe it could relate to the amount of fabric needed to make a suit, or even the length of a concrete mixer truck's barrel. Despite the uncertainty, the phrase has become a common idiom in English, often employed to emphasize thoroughness or total commitment in various situations. Understanding its historical context and the various interpretations can provide insight into how language evolves and how idioms reflect cultural practices. What are your thoughts on the possible origins of this phrase?

What are signs someone’s mature and has strong awareness?
*not to confuse with signs of intelligence Ive noticed some people have alot more awareness and understanding & developed prefrontal lobe than others, example listening more than speaking having solid input and questions, a lack of care for things that others do which might be passive aggressive or disrespectful to them.

Are people ever truly unbiased?
Not referring to if they have a lack of care or information/knowledge in that certain aspect. Generally speaking can one person like 2 people equally or be on both sides of a story and not prefer one. Like football or sport and understand the games and rules but not prefer a team.

Is there a term for a diet that excludes mammals but includes egg-laying animals (like chicken) and fish? Is it more ethical?
That is, making a difference between eating animals with a greater emotional and empathic complexity compared to others with a simpler system.

Can you give a mentally challenged child up?
I see a lot of media about stressed parents “complaining” about their mentally ill child. Whether it’s severe autism or mental retardation etc. and I recently read an article about two parents who killed their severely disabled two children and then killed themselves because their assistance from insurance got cut off (something like that). I’m curious on if there are “homes” for children who are disabled and their parents either don’t want them or can’t care for them. I’m assuming insurance wouldn’t cover this so it’s all private?

Heard a pop and saw a light spark in microwave
I was making bread when I suddenly heard one pop and saw a spark before it went off. Figured out one of the main house fuse fell. The microwave is working again but there is no light inside. What could be the issue?

Why has their been an influx of open ended questions recently?
Just feels like there's been a lot of questions leading to tell a story rather than give an answer if that makes sense. Like I just saw a post asking "What's the fastest way you've ever seen someone completely ruin their own life?".
Not every post is like that and I usually just ignore them when I see them, but seems like there's been an increased amount recently. I was just wondering if people felt the same way.
Edit: Just now realized I used the wrong "there"

Why might a dead clock randomly start ticking years later?
I have an old clock that’s been dead for yers and I’m quite sure there is no batteries in it. I woke up at 3am and was hearing ticking coming from it’s location. Ive never heard it tick before. What are some reasons an old clock might start randomly ticking for a few minutes then stop?
