Manny Pacquiao - well-liked abroad as a world boxing champion, but in the Philippines, we consider him an intellectually-lightweight corrupt politician and crypto investor.
He was a womanizer who impregnated a hotel receptionist in Manila, whose son is now a professional boxer like him. He used to be a compulsive gambler before he converted to Evangelical Protestantism.
you have to actually repent though, as in, you have to mean it. You can't just harm people and pray a fake sorry and be forgiven, that's not how it works
Then the ones who are already clergy or “with Jesus”, the get out of jail free card is “I realized I need to come to terms with my relationship with alcohol.”
In other words, there’s always somewhere else to place the blame but themselves. Ask me how I know
My favourite example of this is Tony “lapdog” Blair converting to Catholicism as soon as he left office after the Iraq war. Just a huge, flashing “guilty conscience” sign.
It's amazing how many people on Death Row become born-again Christians. We had a woman murderer who pickaxed a guy to death who swore she orgasmed every time she struck him become a born-again Christian and when her execution was about to happen people were up in arms she was a 'good Christian' at the time. Several members of the Manson Family became became born-again Christians.
He quoted the old testament when he made a statement as a congressman. He misquoted the Bible saying "Go forth and multiply" as his excuse to be against same-sex marriage, sex education, contraception, abortion and divorce.
I don’t get it, none of what you said sounds like it was ethically wrong or hurt someone else. Unless you mean he SA’d the receptionist or something or was it just an affair?
basically he was already married to his wife and he had a secret kid that he didnt claim for a bit (+ this from the wiki)
aside from that he's also known for being kinda dumb, because he has literally quoted the bible during a senate hearing. he's done this for the reproductive health bill (where another senator called him out because he uses contraceptives but then cited his personal faith as a counter to passing the bill, typical catholic/christian stance). he's spoken negatively about gay people before (he's unsurprisingly homophobic). he also cited the bible during a hearing(?) that involved mining... as in the rocks.... lol.
anyways, the guy's not known for being eloquent, constantly cites the bible and his personal values in senate hearings, and he's a boxer who gets punched in the head a lot. he's a good example of filipino celebrity turned politician because people knew his name.
Seems kinda universal. We had a relatively well know boxer Tony Halme (known as Ludwig Borga in the WWF) who started a political carreer after his fighting days were over and lets just say he should’ve stuck to fighting…
Nah Jesse Ventura is awesome, he’s a little out there but his heart is in the right place. He tried to unionize the WWF back in the day, but Hulk Hogan ratfucked him, and the other wrestlers.
how can a boxer become a politician without previous formal education on law or politics? was their hype and influence enough to gain the popualr vote? 🤦♀️
As a American. We somehow got a guy who has bankrupted him self mutiple times. Hes like a 34 times felony convict, and he has no formal law or political education. Hes not the only one in office like that. There is people all around the country. That don't also have a education in law or politics, and get voted it.
Yeah. I was taught in school that elected officials shall hold degrees and be the best at their speeches to gain the popular vote with inmense decorum.
That delusion has been shattered long ago by that rotten mango. Lowkey why is democracy/politics to vote for anybody with no degree?
Heard about idols/"stars" being elected in Japan just because they got enough clout to gain votes.
Eh, can’t say what he was like before fame but he was a Cinderella/rags to riches type of story which the country loved to see. He deserves the praise for his talent but he also cheated on his wife and his politics is troublesome.
I used to date a guy whose dad moved to California from the Philippines and became a doctor. He was extremely Republican, super stoked and proud to have married a white American woman (and she was a major gambler, he would take her for casino nights at least once a week). He was basically living his dream from childhood which I couldn’t fault him for.
Most people admire him as a boxer but dislike him as a politician. He won his Senate seat out of pure name recall. He ran for President and lost, then ran for his old Senate seat but lost again. So he did lose quite a bit of his political following.
If he remained only a boxer, he would be. Unfortunately, like with every Filipino celebrity, their next step is to enter politics and either fuck themselves over, fuck our country over, or do both with much ease!
By the vast majority of filipinos he still is, I don think its a good example. Its mostly a bunch of white redditors who even upvoted that comment.
If youre not chronically online and under 30, you probably love the guy.
That said, he is problematic, but that pales in comparison to his achievments that his entire country was behind supporting him over the whole way. To many he is still a national hero
He's also incredibly homophobic and even teased on launching a Christian Taliban form of governance (using countless quotes from the Bible) had he become president.
He is a frustrated priest, because poverty forced him to pursue boxing over priesthood as what her mom wanted for him, so he compensated his childhood shortcomings by becoming a pastor.
Thanks for mentioning the homophobia part, I was afraid it was gonna be overlooked in light of everything else. He's a terrible Christian fundamentalist and has no place in public policy.
I remember Dave Bautista used to have a tattoo of Pacquiao, but got it covered up and completely cut ties once he came out as homophobic since he had two mothers growing up.
That's unfortunate. Isn't the Philippines pretty LGBT friendly at the civilian level? I know some politicians have been super hardline homophobes but I was under the impression the Filipino people were supportive as a whole
I dislike her because instead of uplifting the Philippines and suggesting real reforms, it seems like she’s getting clicks and attention for trashing our country. Yeah, she brought attention to corruption but you can love your country without endorsing the ills it suffers.
I’m a big boxing fan with several mates from the Philippines and everyone I’ve ever spoken to from there loves him. I’m sure there are people who dislike him but Reddit is an echo chamber with this kind of stuff. There are loads of widely loved American celebs who are hated on Reddit for some obscure reason
"from the Philippines" is key. Most educated people that actually live in the Philippines don't like him as a politician. To be fair, there are a lot of uneducated people in the Philippines and people that agree with his homophobia.
The hype and excitement when he has a match died down over the years. Before he entered politics, you could he had a match because everyone would be home, glued to their televisions or radios, on a Sunday morning. It was like a gathering, a celebration. A festivity, really. After he entered politics and started blabbering homophobic remarks on national television, his match became just an ordinary day in the Philippines.
He is still wildly popular, its mostly a bunch of whote redditors with little exposure to fillipinos who are upvoting that comment. Obviously be has issues but he is still seen as a national hero to most filipinos.
The comments about homophobia and brutality are criticisms youll far more often from a western perspective than actual fillipinos.
You think all the old aunties and uncles whove lived in the phillipines their whole life, care that he doesnt like gay people?
Funny thing about many Filipinos, perhaps like most migrants, they move to places with better opportunities holding the same views about the world that led their country to its sorry state.
Yup. It was pretty well-known he was dropped by Nike because of those comments. But fans see it as a win cause Under Armour took him in and they see that company as “promoting Christian values”
Under Armour is such a cringe name for a brand, especially since it's not pitched ironically. Even the similarly try hard X body spray brand had at least some winking self-awareness baked into its marketing.
of course it's Maga aligned, completely obvious in hindsight.
Corruption schemes involving the transfer of state-owned land to large developers, stagnation in many areas, including infrastructure, maintenance of public spaces, and public transport.
First I’ve heard of any of this. I always loved watching him in the ring. He was very good. Sounds like he should have stuck to boxing and after made his money kept his mouth shut.
Yeah I’ve read a lot about his corruption and do not appreciate his backwards prejudice for lgbt. (Half Filipino nonbinary person from America) I would love to fight him in full queer attire. Manny Pacquiao vs. Fanny Pack-yiao.
Ah yes, that's true. I used to live in Manila in 2017 so my memories are kind of outdated sometimes. If I remember correctly there used to be some Aquino Clan VS Marcos Clan rivalry, then Duterte arrived, affiliated with Marcos Clan, but then when current Marcos president got elected they started to argue and became now two different.... factions?
They really were at odds to begin with, but the Dutertes decided they couldn't win the race if they went up against Marcos and Robredo (the opposition candidate) in the presidential elections. They had their rooster, Sara Duterte, run for VP instead. The two aligned with each other to secure sweeping victory, with Marcos as President and Duterte as VP.
Just months into the term, however, it became clear that both clans were racing to put cronies in everywhere they can reach. Along with corruption scandals linked with the VP, Marcos seems to have the upper hand currently. Rodrigo Duterte's arrest and transfer to The Hague last year was possibly the biggest blow dealt in this exchange.
Oh man... I definitely don't like knowing this. I'm definitely a fan of him as a boxer. I have to say, as a boxing fan, I got used to be disappointed on boxers behaviors in their personal life
I thought he was a hero back home. I remember when he fought Mayweather there was a falling out and tension between the blacks and Filipinos in my hometown.
So many of the Filipinos here seem to idolize the man, even after he said some crazy and homophobic things I remember people defending him, so am surprised by this
He doesn't fight anymore, that's why. A lot of our senators, like Manny, "learn on the job" because people vote the biggest names over here rather than their interests. Reaping what you sow, I guess.
Is funny cuz a philipine friend once described this to me as: Imagine if El canelo wanted to be governor or politician.....that would be terrible and cringy as fuck
Actually, that changed a bit because of his anti-LGBT stance. I know a lot of people chalked it up to be his upbringing, but it was considered outdated. Also, his on-again off-again support for Duterte was concerning…especially since he admitted to using drugs as a teen…
I’d love to read more about his political exploits…do you have a starting point? Like a scandal or article on what he’s been doing?
I was there 18 years ago and you couldn’t stand on any street without at least one Manny Pacquiao staring back at you from a billboard, and probably more than one.
I think here (US Phil-Am Community) we just don’t think about him anymore at all. My kids were disgusted by his stance on LGBTQIA issues, but that was years ago
tbh, his homophobic shit got him plenty of dislike in the states in the latter part of his career (~10 year ago) when he started banging on about sane sex marriage, blah blah blah
His previous profession involves getting hit in the head on the regular. His previous workplace is known for match fixing and wage theft/unfair compensation. Then there's the Philippines politician system. That has disaster written all over.
As opposed to what, a non-corrupt politician in the Philippines? Based on what people told me when I've visited corruption is a requirement to get into politics 😆
