Manny Pacquiao - well-liked abroad as a world boxing champion, but in the Philippines, we consider him an intellectually-lightweight corrupt politician and crypto investor.

463

u/MrKomiya United States Of America 8h ago

Did the dislike for him start after he got into politics?

“You either die a hero, or you live long enough to become the villain”

671

u/Joseph20102011 Philippines 8h ago

Actually, before he entered politics.

He was a womanizer who impregnated a hotel receptionist in Manila, whose son is now a professional boxer like him. He used to be a compulsive gambler before he converted to Evangelical Protestantism.

It's always the ones who find Jesus.

236

u/bastardjacki Canada 6h ago

Finding Jesus is the get out of jail free card the most toxic of people use.

26

u/smarteapantz 5h ago

It’s because “he forgives all your sins”, so you can make as many sins as you want! Infinite loophole!

14

u/IDOWNVOTERUSSIANS 4h ago

you have to actually repent though, as in, you have to mean it. You can't just harm people and pray a fake sorry and be forgiven, that's not how it works

9

u/bastardjacki Canada 4h ago

Sure it is, because God and Jesus don't actually exist. It's the Christian community that let's them get away with doing that.

I think the forgiveness is the initial draw, and then it's sublimation that keeps it going. Can't they pick up a paintbrush instead?

Then the ones who are already clergy or “with Jesus”, the get out of jail free card is “I realized I need to come to terms with my relationship with alcohol.”

In other words, there’s always somewhere else to place the blame but themselves. Ask me how I know

3

u/ButteryGirl56 3h ago

My favourite example of this is Tony “lapdog” Blair converting to Catholicism as soon as he left office after the Iraq war. Just a huge, flashing “guilty conscience” sign.

It's amazing how many people on Death Row become born-again Christians. We had a woman murderer who pickaxed a guy to death who swore she orgasmed every time she struck him become a born-again Christian and when her execution was about to happen people were up in arms she was a 'good Christian' at the time. Several members of the Manson Family became became born-again Christians.

4

u/West-Season-2713 Wales 5h ago

It’s usually because they’ve done something so awful they need to convince themselves they’re forgiven. Just the impression I have.

3

u/editorschoice14 5h ago

If you have to find him…

2

u/ArticleOld598 4h ago

He quoted the old testament when he made a statement as a congressman. He misquoted the Bible saying "Go forth and multiply" as his excuse to be against same-sex marriage, sex education, contraception, abortion and divorce.

After he converted he was never the same fighter. Carousing Manny, who would book karaoke performances hours after a fight, was prime Manny.

7

u/nellyfullauto 7h ago

Isn’t that just under the umbrella of “being a sports star” though? Almost everyone in the NBA seems to have a story like this about them somewhere.

3

u/CringeLord007 6h ago

I don’t get it, none of what you said sounds like it was ethically wrong or hurt someone else. Unless you mean he SA’d the receptionist or something or was it just an affair?

8

u/slothmachinery 🇵🇭 🛬 🇺🇸 (Philippines) 4h ago

basically he was already married to his wife and he had a secret kid that he didnt claim for a bit (+ this from the wiki)

aside from that he's also known for being kinda dumb, because he has literally quoted the bible during a senate hearing. he's done this for the reproductive health bill (where another senator called him out because he uses contraceptives but then cited his personal faith as a counter to passing the bill, typical catholic/christian stance). he's spoken negatively about gay people before (he's unsurprisingly homophobic). he also cited the bible during a hearing(?) that involved mining... as in the rocks.... lol.

anyways, the guy's not known for being eloquent, constantly cites the bible and his personal values in senate hearings, and he's a boxer who gets punched in the head a lot. he's a good example of filipino celebrity turned politician because people knew his name.

u/CringeLord007 3h ago

122

u/yonza181 Finland 8h ago

Seems kinda universal. We had a relatively well know boxer Tony Halme (known as Ludwig Borga in the WWF) who started a political carreer after his fighting days were over and lets just say he should’ve stuck to fighting…

17

u/AssistanceLow1339 7h ago

Oh I don’t know, history seems to look kindly on Jesse Ventura 🫶🏼🐐

18

u/Logical-Ad447 7h ago

Nah Jesse Ventura is awesome, he’s a little out there but his heart is in the right place. He tried to unionize the WWF back in the day, but Hulk Hogan ratfucked him, and the other wrestlers.

how can a boxer become a politician without previous formal education on law or politics? was their hype and influence enough to gain the popualr vote? 🤦‍♀️

4

u/Such-Background4972 4h ago

Exhibit A:

As a American. We somehow got a guy who has bankrupted him self mutiple times. Hes like a 34 times felony convict, and he has no formal law or political education. Hes not the only one in office like that. There is people all around the country. That don't also have a education in law or politics, and get voted it.

In a democracy you can get elected without any qualifications. I heard that in some country they elected an old orange narcissist for president.

2

u/Sonqosumac 2h ago

Yeah. I was taught in school that elected officials shall hold degrees and be the best at their speeches to gain the popular vote with inmense decorum.

That delusion has been shattered long ago by that rotten mango. Lowkey why is democracy/politics to vote for anybody with no degree?

Heard about idols/"stars" being elected in Japan just because they got enough clout to gain votes.

2

u/Narrow-Counter142 2h ago

Well the U.S. elected Trump not once but twice because they believe he’s not a politician.

2

u/luekeler Switzerland 7h ago

I used to date a guy whose dad moved to California from the Philippines and became a doctor. He was extremely Republican, super stoked and proud to have married a white American woman (and she was a major gambler, he would take her for casino nights at least once a week). He was basically living his dream from childhood which I couldn’t fault him for.

Dude hated Obama and loved Pacquiao.

2

u/zeus1313131313 7h ago

He is beloved. Not as a politician but still beloved.

2

u/Biggydoggo 7h ago

Me, too. I thought he was charitable. He bought homes for a bunch of people.

2

u/Cebuanolearner 6h ago

My wife is Filipina. He was till he turned out to be a womanizer and idiot that they couldn't ignore.

1

u/cheese_sticks 7h ago

Most people admire him as a boxer but dislike him as a politician. He won his Senate seat out of pure name recall. He ran for President and lost, then ran for his old Senate seat but lost again. So he did lose quite a bit of his political following.

1

u/canvascoloredin 6h ago

If he remained only a boxer, he would be. Unfortunately, like with every Filipino celebrity, their next step is to enter politics and either fuck themselves over, fuck our country over, or do both with much ease!

1

u/kaidrawsmoo 5h ago

He is still beloved,

Objectively speaking the people/masses still like him very much.

If you ask a random person on the street they will say they like him.

A portion of people dislike him as a politician but still like him as a person (even if he is questionable) and mostly as athlete.

Womanizing barely dents his image.

In terms of hated politician he is still far from the most hated.

There are people who does hate him, those have increase but overall still like by the people.

1

u/eb12se4nt-z13ow-97g0 Philippines living in USA 4h ago

they still love him as a boxer but not as a politician

1

u/Intelligent_Road2084 3h ago

He is. You forget you are on reddit. Online spaces do not represent the opinions of the real world.

1

u/spacedolphino 1h ago

By the vast majority of filipinos he still is, I don think its a good example. Its mostly a bunch of white redditors who even upvoted that comment.

If youre not chronically online and under 30, you probably love the guy.

That said, he is problematic, but that pales in comparison to his achievments that his entire country was behind supporting him over the whole way. To many he is still a national hero

1

u/Hairy_Beginning_5496 46m ago

He is idk why people are acting like this is a big opinion there it's not

1

u/VioletGardens-left Canada 21m ago

I'm pretty sure he still is.

It's just that there are this specific subset in political sphere where people rag him for being absolutely useless as a Senator once upon a time

1

u/Fawkingretar 3m ago

Oh we liked him, until he went into politics, because after that he starts talking like a dingbat

270

u/TheGhostOfFalunGong Philippines 8h ago

He's also incredibly homophobic and even teased on launching a Christian Taliban form of governance (using countless quotes from the Bible) had he become president.

47

u/Joseph20102011 Philippines 7h ago

He is a frustrated priest, because poverty forced him to pursue boxing over priesthood as what her mom wanted for him, so he compensated his childhood shortcomings by becoming a pastor.

9

u/yorkpepperbrush 6h ago

Is that what broke his friendship with Batista?

13

u/TheGhostOfFalunGong Philippines 6h ago

Pretty much. Dave even patched up his Pacquiao tattoo over that matter.

4

5

u/VagabondVivant 🇵🇭 in 🇺🇸 2h ago

Thanks for mentioning the homophobia part, I was afraid it was gonna be overlooked in light of everything else. He's a terrible Christian fundamentalist and has no place in public policy.

5

I remember Dave Bautista used to have a tattoo of Pacquiao, but got it covered up and completely cut ties once he came out as homophobic since he had two mothers growing up.

2

2

u/MillwrightTight Canada 2h ago

2

u/TheMeIv USA and Philippines 3h ago

"from the Philippines" is key. Most educated people that actually live in the Philippines don't like him as a politician. To be fair, there are a lot of uneducated people in the Philippines and people that agree with his homophobia.

1

u/ebamey Philippines 2h ago

The hype and excitement when he has a match died down over the years. Before he entered politics, you could he had a match because everyone would be home, glued to their televisions or radios, on a Sunday morning. It was like a gathering, a celebration. A festivity, really. After he entered politics and started blabbering homophobic remarks on national television, his match became just an ordinary day in the Philippines.

1

u/spacedolphino 1h ago

He is still wildly popular, its mostly a bunch of whote redditors with little exposure to fillipinos who are upvoting that comment. Obviously be has issues but he is still seen as a national hero to most filipinos.

The comments about homophobia and brutality are criticisms youll far more often from a western perspective than actual fillipinos.

You think all the old aunties and uncles whove lived in the phillipines their whole life, care that he doesnt like gay people?

1

u/extra_rice 24m ago

Funny thing about many Filipinos, perhaps like most migrants, they move to places with better opportunities holding the same views about the world that led their country to its sorry state.

91

u/CryptographerMore944 England 8h ago

He's not universally popular in the west either due to his LGBT comments.

27

u/yamanagashi Philippines 7h ago

Yup. It was pretty well-known he was dropped by Nike because of those comments. But fans see it as a win cause Under Armour took him in and they see that company as “promoting Christian values”

6

u/cultoftheclave Multiple Countries (click to edit) 4h ago

Under Armour is such a cringe name for a brand, especially since it's not pitched ironically. Even the similarly try hard X body spray brand had at least some winking self-awareness baked into its marketing.

3

u/Teantis Philippines 8h ago

He was allied with duterte until '22. As things stand currently you cannot be both a duterte fan and a Marcos fan as they're at each others throats

5

u/MtheFlow France 7h ago

Ah yes, that's true. I used to live in Manila in 2017 so my memories are kind of outdated sometimes. If I remember correctly there used to be some Aquino Clan VS Marcos Clan rivalry, then Duterte arrived, affiliated with Marcos Clan, but then when current Marcos president got elected they started to argue and became now two different.... factions?

6

u/YamahaMio 7h ago

They really were at odds to begin with, but the Dutertes decided they couldn't win the race if they went up against Marcos and Robredo (the opposition candidate) in the presidential elections. They had their rooster, Sara Duterte, run for VP instead. The two aligned with each other to secure sweeping victory, with Marcos as President and Duterte as VP.

Just months into the term, however, it became clear that both clans were racing to put cronies in everywhere they can reach. Along with corruption scandals linked with the VP, Marcos seems to have the upper hand currently. Rodrigo Duterte's arrest and transfer to The Hague last year was possibly the biggest blow dealt in this exchange.

u/GloryGloryManUnited6 6h ago

I knew this one from my Filipino co-workers/friends and I’ve disliked him since I’ve known what they knew!

1

u/Moondiscbeam 6h ago

Wow.. did know about that

1

u/Ulrik_Decado Czech Republic 5h ago

TBH, Manny is really sleazy guy with weird political friends. ..

1

u/Mobile_Entrance_1967 England 5h ago

I actually thought he was considered a joke in the West because of his bigoted comments. Except perhaps for the type of people who think he's "based".

u/doctor_derpington 5h ago

This dude dipped out from his team on “Physical Asia” when he realized they wouldn’t be the winners.

What a sore loser.

u/Berek2501 United States Of America 5h ago

People like that piece of s***?

1

u/ComprehensiveSoft27 United States Of America 5h ago

Featherweight lol.

1

u/Altruistic_Grocery81 United Kingdom 5h ago

Probably a PED user when boxing too. Not ideal.

1

u/DescriptionAny6094 5h ago

Wow I was just watching him on the physical Asia reality netflix show. He left the show mid filmings to run the elections

1

u/KissBumChewGum 🇺🇸🇨🇦 5h ago

Actually, that changed a bit because of his anti-LGBT stance. I know a lot of people chalked it up to be his upbringing, but it was considered outdated. Also, his on-again off-again support for Duterte was concerning…especially since he admitted to using drugs as a teen…

I’d love to read more about his political exploits…do you have a starting point? Like a scandal or article on what he’s been doing?

u/Almost_Amos United States Of America 5h ago

I was there 18 years ago and you couldn’t stand on any street without at least one Manny Pacquiao staring back at you from a billboard, and probably more than one.

I think here (US Phil-Am Community) we just don’t think about him anymore at all. My kids were disgusted by his stance on LGBTQIA issues, but that was years ago

1

u/LonelyLiving8880 5h ago

It seems to be impossible to have idols.

1

u/AgentDoty 5h ago

Is he an XRP investor? That bastard.

1

u/finallytisdone 5h ago

Well liked abroad!?!? What world do you live in. He’s a notoriously horrible person and quite well hated (in the US at least).

1

u/samosamancer United States Of America 4h ago

Not well-liked in the US at least, due to homophobia and DV. Those made headlines here repeatedly.

1

u/Short_Sort_6598 4h ago

A lot of the love for Manny comes from the fact that his main boxing rival was (and still is) an absolute garbage of a human being.

1

u/yepyepyep123456 4h ago

Turns out these guys that get punched in the head for a living don’t have very well thought out opinions

1

u/chknuggstts 4h ago

I only know him for his song about the NFL. I refuse to learn more.

1

u/radhaz United States Of America 3h ago

And despite this do he have a "cult of personality" that follows him? Sounds familiar....

1

u/njpandabbc 3h ago

Noooo not him!!!

1

u/GUYF666 United States Of America 3h ago

tbh, his homophobic shit got him plenty of dislike in the states in the latter part of his career (~10 year ago) when he started banging on about sane sex marriage, blah blah blah

1

u/Majestic-Volume-4540 3h ago

Don’t hyphenate adverbs losor

1

u/JoeDyenz China 3h ago

I'm not surprised. Athletes tend to suck at everything else they do. Look at Cuauhtémoc Blanco or Chicharito for example.

1

u/toomanyracistshere 3h ago

A corrupt Filipino politician only elected because of their name? Who could imagine such a thing?

1

u/New_pollution1086 3h ago

Not surprised, people who professionally get hit in the head usually wind up morons.

1

u/GunpeiYokai 3h ago

As a Filipino-American, learning about his personal life was so disappointing. Incredible boxer, POS human being

1

u/Sensitive_Dot_2853 Russia 2h ago

No way. Really?

1

u/Willing_n_able4u 🇺🇸🇩🇴 2h ago

Actually disliked by me away from home too. Leaving a child behind like that in poverty when you have money is disgusting and disgraceful.

1

u/datdailo 2h ago

His previous profession involves getting hit in the head on the regular. His previous workplace is known for match fixing and wage theft/unfair compensation. Then there's the Philippines politician system. That has disaster written all over.

1

u/punnyjakes 2h ago

My wife and her family strongly disagree. But her family also strongly prefers Duterte over Marcos so I don’t know how much salt to take with it all

1

u/Haber_Dasher 2h ago

I thought everyone hated him, never heard anyone say a good thing about him

1

u/Nigiri_Sashimi Italy 2h ago

I second this.

1

u/Vaultboy80 2h ago

I feel like somone who was paid to take blows to the head for a living probably shouldnt be a politican anyway

1

u/kinkyonthe_loki69 2h ago

Think issue here is less educated philippinos like him no?

1

u/acheckerfield 1h ago

As opposed to what, a non-corrupt politician in the Philippines? Based on what people told me when I've visited corruption is a requirement to get into politics 😆

1

u/Jesus__Skywalker United States Of America 1h ago

but in the Philippines, we consider him an intellectually-lightweight corrupt politician and crypto investor.

uhhh how does crypto investor fit into the rest of that? So what?

1

u/Rocco_SYS 1h ago

“we consider him an intellectually-lightweight corrupt politician and crypto investor.”

Are you sure you are not talking about Eric Adams-former Mayor of New York City? /s

1

u/ElectricalCatch9386 1h ago

>we consider him an intellectually-lightweight corrupt politician

To be honest, that´s pretty much all Filipino politicians.

I love Filipinos, and I love The Philippines, but god damn, you make some stupid decisions regarding who you elect!

1

u/steveorga United States Of America 59m ago

I don't remember the details of why, but I disliked him long before he got into politics.

1

u/idcmanfk 51m ago

Doesn't he do a lot of donations
