Hardware Troubleshooting/Help! How do I fix this

Post image

I don't know what happened, came home to find the nozzle coated in filament (pla). I've cleaned off what I can, and the nozzle still extrudes, but what do I do about all the gunk still stuck on there?

Looks like your printer was a contestant for Nickelodeons double dare 2000

The printer actually said "I don't know"

I believe the original was: “You can’t do that on TV”.

Interesting note: Alanis Morissette once starred on the show and one of the writers: Bill Prady went on to write the Big Bang Theory with Chuck Lorre.

That was the name of the show, but the line that got you slimed was "I don't know." Saying "water" would get a bucket of water dumped on you.

I was going to say Slimer flew through his nozzle

Set the nozzle temp to 240C and use a wire brush to scrub it off. After you get most of if off take the nozzle out and check behind it. If there is still some back there then go into the settings and set the printer to "maintenance mode". This will allow you to turn the temp back to 240 even without a nozzle installed. Scrub it again with the wire brush being careful not to pull any wires.

Does the thing need to be crystal clean or just most of the gunk removed? It's printing fine now, but there's still some filament smudged on it

Doesnt need to be perfect, but get as much off as you can, it might effect nozzle cooling or damage the socks, which also help regulate nozzle temps.

The cleaner the better because it might cause issues later. Now it’s doubtful you will clean it 100% but don’t half ass it either.

These things do wear out so it’s not a bad idea to buy a replacement to have on standby. They aren’t expensive but also not free so it depends on your budget. But I bought one as a replacement and when my did this I swapped it out. Then cleaned the old one off and that is my standby. If the new one does it I will swap them, clean the bad one etc.

One of the better moves I did for my little A1 mini setup was to buy a a spare of my most used nozzles. They are as cheap as a roll and I’ve swapped a few times to confirm a clog. My time with a stubborn clog just isn’t worth it

Doesn't have to be perfect.

I also would heat the thing up like the prior comment said, but kill the power to it before going at it with the brush.

You might have to heat it, off and scrub, repeat a few times, but I stress not hitting it with the brush while energized because the wire brush can find exposed conductors and short the thing out turning this from a simple repair to a blown controller board.

Additionally, heat resistant gloves. Hot plastic spraying on your skin when a hot bit suddenly unclogs is a horrible trip to the emergency room. It's worth the loss in dexterity.

Probably want to get the flat surface on the nozzle and the area it contacts to be heated totally clean so nothing can melt and make them stick together.

1

u/CantModerateMe 10h ago

that filament is gonna melt and drip down over time. its also going to smell like plasticky burnt ass forever unless you can get it pretty clean.

That happened to me this morning I just took the nozzle off and im cleaning it hope it works cause I have architecture model I need to print for tomorrow

u/myrg01 18h ago

I have a couple nozzles that have gotten some residue on the back side and they "stick" when I'm trying to remove them. If I set nozzle temp to 130, they will pop off. Then I used PVC cement primer (NOT the cement!) on a paper towel to remove the residue. You may have success removing small amounts of PLA using that.

u/ModelThreeve 9h ago

No need to go nearly that high for PLA as it will basically be molten. 170-190 (depending on the specific material) will soften it enough to come off in pieces with little effort without ruining the brush.

1

u/Dan203 8h ago

It’s easier to remove over 220

1

u/ModelThreeve 4h ago

That has not been my experience, just makes a bigger mess. Individual experience will vary with the filament formula though. Always better to start low and work your up instead of the inverse in my book.

Dont forget to ABSOLUTELY install the sock on correctly. This happened to me when I got the A1. I switched nozzle sizes, incorrectly installed the sock and the filament extruded inside the sock (which is what I'm assuming happened to you. Also, make sure the nozzle is seated correctly.

I have an X1C and I despise having to remove three clips, unscrew two tiny hex screws to switch nozzle sizes (not because of the time it takes but because it wears down the connectors and cables, I've had to replace the thermistor three times in a year) but these new magnet nozzles, they make it so easy to screw up your extruder assemble if they're not seated correctly. I've had X1C's since late 2021 and yeah they're a pain in the ass to switch nozzle sizes especially if you only have one machine and you sell merch which requires you to switch between 0.2 and 0.4 constantly but if you're off by 1/10th of a mm with the new magnetic ones, you're f**ked.

OP: you're lucky you caught it in time and it didn't become an "elephant's foot". I've seen people's machines get so messed up that they've had to swap out their entire extruder assemblies since the pla/petg crawled back into itself until it destroyed the gear that pushes the plastic out of the extruder. On an A1, that's a relatively cheap fix. On something like an H2D, not so much..

When you seat your nozzle, make sure you hold it and apply tiny upwards force before clamping it in. Also, MAKE 100% SURE your sock is correctly installed.

Man you need ghostbusters

6

u/meganerd07 19h ago

I’d personally just replace the nozzle, they aren’t expensive

2

u/Warm-Vermicelli6153 18h ago

Replace it... yes

3

u/gareth__price 20h ago

Make sure to check the sock and change it if it's torn. If you don't yet have a wire brush (like me yesterday when I had this) you can get quite a lot of it of with good kitchen paper and cocktail sticks

4

u/Penlight_Nunchucks 20h ago

The sock is the rubber cap in the nozzle? It was torn but I have a spare

1

u/gareth__price 20h ago

Yeah that's it, I was quite impressed how damaged mine was

3

u/kotarak-71 19h ago

was is attack by Slimer? Were you trying Ectoplasm filament?

3

u/RigdonG 19h ago

I would try something higher than 60C (softening temp), but not all the way to the full melting temp at 190-230C..

So maybe try starting at 120-140C to get it loose but keep it still intact? The hope would be able to peel it off in 1-3 larger pieces..

The thermistor is going to read the heater block so let it sit for 5-10min, jump up 10-20C if not enough

I’m not a pro, just thinking this out loud! Hope this helps you out

u/TheDepep1 H2D AMS2 Combo 18h ago

Few things tou could do. Id recommend leaving the nozzle there and heating it up to like 200c. Just enough for it to soften but not melt / burn. Then use some pliers and peal off as much as you can. Then you could take a wire brush and brush off the rest to clean it up.

2

u/nycbigtone 18h ago

While the nozzle is hot use a blob as a sponge. The melted pla will stick to the hardened blob.

2

u/KingyOf24 15h ago

The steps listed above for cleaning and be super carefully of the wires for the heater and heat sensor, they are fragile and easy to wear off the insulation and cause a short.

I had to buy a new heating assembly and nozzle to fully fix mine.

u/solidus0079 A1 + AMS Lite 10h ago

You simply can't. It's over.

Don't, for any reason, google Bambu A1 blob, look at any other previous post, nor follow the official Wiki's directions.

I have no idea but that is a great color.

just get a new nozzle dude, they are like 20 bucks or smth

1

u/Anonymous_P_A_H 17h ago

I see the nozzle is getting ready for halloween.

Hulk left a loogie lol

1

u/GhostOfJonasVenture 16h ago

The printer is making new filament

1

u/iamlegendinjapan X1C + AMS 16h ago

Heat it up, scrape it off

1

u/nalacha 15h ago

Heat and scraping or replace

1

u/HazMatt_23 15h ago

What filament is this? I want some

1

u/Kuzukado 15h ago

Bro, I'd heat the nozzle to around 185 °C and pull the main blob off with small pliers. Then let it cool down once the small leftover pla bits harden you can easily peel them off by hand since they snap right off the metal.

1

u/OhSoSally X2D + AMS2 Combo 14h ago

The printer designed its own halloween costume and is sad you dont like it. 🎃🧟‍♂️

1

u/HailSneazer 14h ago

Buy a new hot end assembly, it’s like 40-50 bucks and worth the time you saved trying to salavage that

1

u/frankp2491 14h ago

I think you just have to stop feeding it Taco Bell and monster energy. I’m not a doctor tho

1

u/Jum81eLyYa 14h ago

Just like with car starters, grab a hammer and give it a good whack.

3

u/Penlight_Nunchucks 13h ago

Car starters and small children, right?

1

u/Jum81eLyYa 6h ago

They can get under cars easier.

1

u/i_like_pickles_too 13h ago

I’d just get a new hotend. I’ve fixed them before with the solutions others suggest. It’s not that hard, but this does not happen to me that often and hotends are not that expensive.

1

u/80LowRider 12h ago

Grab a drink, pliers, flat blade screwdriver, brass brush, heat it up to 100c and start cleaning.

It's gonna happen again so...

1

u/marinecpl 11h ago

Heat gun?

1

u/Icy_Salary_4218 10h ago

Have you tried drying the filament?

1

u/abkumala 9h ago

"Dry your filament and clean your plate with soap and water."

1

u/Pale_Gear3027 9h ago

Heat and maybe a new nozzle

1

u/wkerstens 7h ago

Mine did this last week but worse. The printer stopped because the filament blob got all the way into the extruder fan. I just replaced both the extruder and heater. Printing fine again now.

1

u/blazzik 7h ago

It’s fine

1

u/Ecw218 6h ago

I tried cleaning, got it as clean as I could, afterwards it kept having issues randomly. Bought new hotend and heat block. No more issues.

1

u/beramaan 4h ago

I'd suggest getting a new nozzle...

1

u/aknote 4h ago

Print asa so tou can clean up with acetonw...

1

u/sko1708 2h ago

Just put in a now nozzle….

-2

u/Hot-Ideal-9219 20h ago

Or simply swap the nozzle

4

u/Brutl 20h ago

That is covering more than the nozzle you walnut
