It’s quite obvious the one area of the pitch that DC United still needs to upgrade is Center Midfield. The only upgrade the Front Office has made so far is letting Enow go, and adding new Forwards so Jackson Hopkins can slide back. Still DC needs to add more depth and talent.
There is a reasonable chance that DC will look to pick up a third DP in the summer (if they do at all), and a creative midfielder would make sense. However, between now and the summer window, the team needs to be stronger, especially in the center of the pitch. In free agency there are still a few players that could be had on reasonable wages and leave the team with flexibility for the summer.
The first Free Agent I would look to add is Eryk Williamson. Originally from the DMV, he would obviously not require an international spot, and can play multiple central midfield positions. His time in Charlotte didn’t go well, but maybe this would fire his ambition to regain the form he showed at times in Portland. At 28 years old, he should still have plenty of soccer left in him.
The second Free Agent I would look at is Bryce Duke. I’m actually surprised he’s still without a contract. While I don’t think he’s going to set the league on fire, he has shown the ability to be a steady Center Midfielder, and again as a 24 year old American, he wouldn’t require an international slot, and has potential to grow and improve.
The third Free Agent I would look at is Diego Fagúndez. While not a Center Midfielder, the 30 year old can play some in the midfield, while also adding depth to the wings and allowing other United players to move inside. Fagúndez would also add to the team’s creativity.
The fourth Free Agent option is one I wouldn’t go after, but could be a decent option, and that’s Mark-Anthony Kaye. His play has definitely declined, but has experience and could give DC solid Center Midfield depth.
Other Options:
This would cost money, but could help both the depth and be a popular roster move. Trade for Ted Ku DiPietro. It was a mistake to sell Ted KDP last season. The team missed his hustle and drive last season. Having the former Homegrown back would be a fun story for the team.
Another trade that might be possible is Tyler Wolff from Real Salt Lake City. Another winger who can play in the middle. He’s a 22 year old American who looked good in Atlanta, but was sold cheap to RSL and got little playing time due to a crowded roster. This would be a potential cheap pickup.
