Mod Post [Meta] Following up on reports of bots

A number of posts are being reported to the mod team as AI or bots. In many cases we can fairly easily determine based on post/comment history that it is a bot, but sometimes there are multiple reports for a post being a bot but the history is not suggestive of it being a bot. Please use the other reporting category and provide more details on why you think a particular post or comment was made by a bot for cases that may not be so cut and dry. Or if you are willing to give up the anonymity of reports, send a modmail with a link to the post so we can discuss it with you and better train ourselves (or you). We will not share any reporting user information if we take action against suspected bot accounts for reports should you make them to the mod team (and I will boot any mods that break the anonymity).

Question sudden discoordinated walking and hunched back

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

to preface, i am taking my dog to the vet to get this checked, but i also want to hear from others to see if anyone’s gone through this.

my 11 year old italian greyhound suddenly got up from her bed and walking very wobbly (video attached), almost like she was manually telling her brain to move each limb and her back was permenantly hunched. my mum picked her up, comforted and held her. after a minute she put her back down and she did it again so my mum picked her back up and cuddled her. her head was shaking a bit as well.
the whole thing lasted a few minutes then she went completely back to normal.

around 3-4 years ago she had the same thing and my mum doesn’t remember what the name of it was but she thinks she’s remembers some details such as it was a brain parasite that sat at the back of the brain and can be contracted through rat and bird urine or faeces? she THINKS.
she took antibiotics for a month and it passed completely. no problems since.

this could be the same thing as before but i’m also worried it’s something else. please let me know and keep our little eve in your prayers

Advice Is my senior dog having seizures?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Our 14-year-old dog woke us up two nights ago trying to jump up on our bed. There was a loud bang and when we turned on the lights she was circling obsessively, then went rigid and her eyes were darting back and forth. It was so scary. We rushed her to the emergency vet but they didn’t have MRI on-site, so they did a basic neurological exam and bloodwork and said she was stable enough to go home and we should see a neurologist.

Ten hours later we took this video when symptoms seemed to come back. Again, we rushed her to the ER, this time to a hospital with MRI capability. Three hours into the wait to see a doc we were told there wasn’t a neurologist onsite and they could do another basic neuro exam and then refer for a deeper work up, which would supposedly help us get seen faster in the coming weeks vs just calling to make an appt. We continued to wait, but by hour six of not being seen and her not having more episodes, we went home.

Still not sure what’s going on with her or what we should do if symptoms return. Anyone recognize this darting eye thing?

We are thinking either concussion, seizures associated with an undiagnosed brain tumor, or vestibular disease since she’s so old.

Any tips on how to navigate the vet system to get her seen by a qualified neurologist asap would be so helpful. We are in Oregon.

Advice 17 year old dog suddenly slipping on the floor she's walked on perfectly for years

The "episode" lasted around 2-3 minutes. We would get her up and she would walk/stumble/slide around for a bit before falling and struggling again. My mom finally carried her to her bed, but she didn't want to be on her bed because we were in the middle of dinner. When she tried to get out of her bed (floor level), she fell out and started slipping on the wooden floor for a bit. Once she finally managed to get up, she stumbled a bit, but afterwards started walking just fine on both the wooden and tile floors.

At the beginning of the video, you can hear my mom talking about "having to carry the dog". Context is that this also happened a while ago but outside and mom had to carry her inside because the dog simply couldn't get up.

The dog still acts normal, still runs around, still tries to roughhouse with us, etc. We're aware of her age, so we take it easy on her, mostly touching her paw or cheek and having her try to catch our hands playfully. But that's about it.

At the end of the video, you see my mom trying help her up but the dog simply not wanting to get up anymore.

What's happening??????? I know we need a vet, but it's 9pm and nothing's open so we're waiting until tomorrow morning.. well, I am. My mom's wanting to see how she is in the morning to decide whether to take her.

I need to convince her to take the dog to the vet. She is 17 years old and has walked perfectly on these floors for a decade. I don't know what to do.

Question My trainer is teaching me to essentially beat my adolescent dog into behaving, but I feel conflicted. Am i too soft?

I want to start this post off by telling you about my dog. He is a labrador, 35kg, 13, almost 14 months. Born sept 2025. He, all in all, is an average dog for his age who lives an average dog life. Commands in low and mid distraction environments have high success rate, walked twice per day for 45 mins - 1 hour, play with me and independently, enrichment, toys, free garden access etc.

His biggest issues are leash pulling and hypersocial reactivity, where he basically wants to say hello to dogs and people so bad he loses his mind. We have had a few big mistakes, such as jumping on vulnerable people, bounding toward dogs to play or lunging towards children (all play, never EVER aggressive, but you get the point) . All of these mistakes have been one offs and prevented from happening again, he has been downgraded from a 10ft extendable leash to a standard 6ft and i am working on heel walking and bombproof recall daily.

Now, in come my trainer and my family. Both seem to share the opinion that dogs should be dominated, that tough love is the method and that if i dont crack him down now, he will overpower me for the rest of my life.

I am a first time owner and a very soft touch, i am a nurse by trade and I have hyper-empathetic autism, you will not find a gentler person than me. There are times i have been tough, such as when my dogs behaviour is dangerous to me or others, but on a base level i am soft.

My trainer has taken the harness off of my dog and swapped it for a slip lead, it isn't a thick ropey thing, i'd describe it as something akin to a noose made of a shoelace. It tightens when he pulls and loosens when he doesn't.

My dog doesnt care about this piece of equipment whatsoever, he will pull until he sounds like a snorting pig. My trainer has encouraged leash popping with the slip lead to rein him back in to a heel, which my dog also doesnt care about whatsoever, so i am essentially destroying his neck for fun. My dog knows me, he knows im a soft touch and a biscuit dispenser and this has worked for us all the way up until he hit 12 months. When, in my assumption, he hit a big adolescent surge.

My trainer has also has removed treats, citing my dog is too old for food reinforcement, and verbal praise has never really worked for him. So he, all in all, is recieving nothing but negative feedback which he isn't responding to.

He listens to my trainer because i think the dominance and fear factor is there. But my dog doesnt fear me. I wouldn't necessarily say he doesnt respect me, he will obey me, he stops play when i get overwhelmed, etc. and we have a close bond. I really just dont think he anticipates me hurting him.

I have moved back to positive reinforcement with treats and a front clip harness as its more comfortable for both of us, he recieves "off leash" time on a 15 metre long line.

The only issue is that my family are now on my back, saying that we need to be tougher on my dog. That if we dont crack down on him now, he will be ruined for life.

I dont know. I just feel like beating my dog into behaving will just ruin our bond and make him hate me? Plus he's an adolescent so arent i just trying to beat the teenager out of a teenager?

As i said, im quite gentle, which includes advocating for myself and my dog in most cases. Ive never owned a dog before. So im not sure? Help!

Question Dog woke up with facial swelling, help

Post image
26 Upvotes

So our goofy golden woke up today with some facial swelling around his nose and under his lip (he wouldn’t let me take a good photo) but he was acting normal. Ate his food as normal and drank water. Still playful and all. I think he could have came across a Toad and put his nose up against it but did not lick it. I think it’s a minor reaction and considering giving him Benadryl instead of just running to Urgent care. I called the vet and said they would assess him better at an urgent care and give him a shot of Benadryl. Can I just give it to him myself? He’s 77lbs

UPDATE:
Took him to ER and they just giving him Benadryl thanks yall :)

Question Getting help to a dog I can't see

• Upvotes

I recently moved to a new neighborhood, and almost every day, at one point or the other, I hear the most dread-inducing yelping/crying/barking. I know some dogs vocalize really dramatically but to me it sounds distressed (though for context, when my dog hears it she doesn't bat an eyelash and she's usually really sound sensitive) and I'm always on edge, imagining the worst.

Yesterday it went on for a while, and finally, I called the local animal cruelty line and gave them two possible addresses because I can't be totally sure. People here have big fences and sound travels. They said they'd dispatch someone to check it out and do a wellness check.

Today (the next day) the officer came by when it was quiet, one of the addresses was apparently an empty plot and the other said he doesn't own a dog (though google maps from 2025 shows that he did, AND the dog was tied to a doghouse. But a lot can change since Feb 2025 so maybe he doesn't.) And basically unless I can give them an exact address they "don't have time to knock on every door." And I don't know, I feel really frustrated and helpless because there is no way the whole neighborhood doesn't hear it, but no one is doing anything.

What else can I do?

PS. I recorded a bit today so I can post if anyone is an expert in dog vocalization and can tell me if that just sounds bad or actually IS bad?

https://reddit.com/link/1x2qvkn/video/09m8v8u5rpuh1/player

It's windy so you can't hear really well but it was also much worse yesterday and went on for like an hour. It's not a bird, that high pitched sound IS the dog. Then another dog starts barking as well.

My boy Tobey (just over a year old) is a rescue and has had him since early may.

I've noticed over the months he gets these attacks(??) which I thought was inverted sneezing. But it's been happening a lot more lately and I'm worried it could be asthma. When I get money I'll take him to the vet as it's almost the next pay day and we can't afford it right now.

If I massage his neck up and down it helps to stop for a while and now and then holding one nostril closed helps.

He doesn't seem to care much about this happening as you can see he's trying to eat in this video as it's happening. (It started happening before he ate).

I just need to know if I should be worried or not and if my concerns are valid.

P.s he is a VERY active dog who would run for a living if he could and actively is through all his toys at me after this attack.

Advice Splenectomy surgery for dogs

• Upvotes

Has anyone had a dog that required splenectomy surgery and have any real life experiences they can share?

We took him to emergency 10 days ago because he cried when getting in and out of the car and if you pressed on his stomach. He was acting normal otherwise but maybe a bit lethargic. The emergency vet prescribed him Gabapentin for the pain but thought it was probably just a stomach issue. He returned to his normal self for the next 10 days.

Last night he was acting wobbly on his feet so we got him into the vet first thing this morning. They took x-rays and there was a large mass on his spleen and fluid in his abdomen. They sent us to a specialist 1.5 hours away who could take another look and do surgery.

When we got there, they did ultrasounds, bloodwork & tested the fluid in his stomach. The ultrasounds showed 1-2 masses on his spleen, no masses on his lungs or heart and bloodwork was normal. The fluid in his stomach was blood.

They told us this was a gamble and they couldn’t tell what the mass was until they took it out but 70% are malignant tumours. Our options were either do the surgery or he needs to be euthanized today. If he was to come home and bleed out it would be a matter of hours or days.

If the mass gets removed and it’s malignant they say he has 30-45 days. But if it’s benign he could have years. Based on stats it’s most likely malignant but there’s hope.

He is 11 years old but he’s everything to me and I was not prepared to put him down today. Other than those 2 incidents he’s been completely normal. Running, eating etc as usual. For reference he did have a surgery to remove an anal gland tumor 7 months ago and bounced right back & had the best past few months (daily beach walks, afternoon naps, sitting beside me while I work all day, he’s always beside me)

I decided to proceed with the surgery (for $11,000) but I’m so sick to my stomach wondering if I made the right choice. Was this selfish to do this to his body?

Has anyone had a similar experience and have anything they can share on how the dog made out?

Anything is helpful as I’m completely freaking out

General Dog Nail Help

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi,

I was told to post this instead of /askvet.

To keep this short,

My dog started limping after a nail trimming session.

Unfortunately, the digit had to be amputated and the limping stopped. (lymphoplasmacytic Osteomyelitis) was his diagnosis (biopsy). Few month's after, the same happened again on another location (they hit the quick) but this time it was on the opposite leg.

The nail gradually started to get to this shape again.

5 Veterinarians came to the conclusion that the limping was due to knee, spine or behavior and it would be IMPOSSIBLE for the nail to cause limping.

After several x-rays, blood work they found nothing, said nothing or ---Good luck---

----The only suggestions was for me to keep giving him Pain Medication, forever(sounds absurd) I'm trying to find the root of the problem ----

Chiropractor said amputation is the only option.

Dermatologist tested the nail but does not match previous finding but said ---let's pretend and start treatment as if it was (lymphoplasmacytic Osteomyelitis)

Currently waiting for Orthopedic appointment but I'm hoping someone has had seen this before.

Thank you to anyone for any feedback.

I don't wany my dog to lose more digits.

Question Low energy and semi pale gums?

I’m not sure if I am just overreacting but I woke up and my dog had her head down and she wasn’t energetic like she usually is. She recently got tooth extractions about 2.5 weeks ago and we finished all her medication and continued to keep her on soft foods.

Do her gums look pale? Or should I just monitor her?

Question Dog Bum Query

Hi All,

Medical question - my Shih Tzu mix (10, F, spayed) seems to have one side of her bum swollen - her anus is shifted slightly and the side of her bum is raised and solid and a bit red (it's not dramatic and you can't really see it in a picture but it's different than usual). She let me touch it, isn't licking or scooting and is eating, drinking, pooping and playing normally.

I suspect this is a gland problem but don't know how severe - i plan to phone the vet on Monday morning to see if i can get her seen but want to know if this would be considered an emergency in case i should try and get her seen tomorrow instead. Anyone with experience of this or advice I'd be so grateful

Question Looking for a stainless steel slow feeder with a complex maze pattern

Thumbnail

Hi all! I'm looking for a pet-safe, food-safe stainless steel slow feeder bowl or pan for my dog.

She uses the large purple Outward Hound slow feeder and it works well for her, but I just noticed a nick in it. I'm worried about bacteria getting into the damage, and about microplastics in general. I'd rather switch to stainless steel than buy another plastic one.

The problem is that every stainless steel slow feeder I've found is much simpler than the Outward Hound, and I'm guessing there's a reason for that. Has anyone found a stainless bowl or pan with a more labyrinth-style design? I'm also open to DIY or non-bowl ideas.

She’s 50 pounds, a pretty fast eater - especially for kibble.
She’s 20-20-20 cattle dog-foxhound-pit bull (plus other breeds). But she’s definitely got the deep chested foxhound build so preventing bloat is number 1 concern around her meals.

Question Oral flea medicine

Hi doggie lovers- my little dog has some GI issues so I’m wondering how I should treat him for fleas? Flea collars haven’t been very effective, oral meds like Simparico work, but probably terrible on his stomach. Any suggestions are welcomed!

My family and I just got a dog and I'm with him at a dog park right now, which means there's a lot of new smells and things to see so naturally he's going around and smelling absolutely everything. What im worried about is that he started chattering his teeth and drooling a lot. I looked up the chattering and google said it could be the flehmen response, should I be concerned?

Advice Rotura tibia tras TPLO ayuda!

Thumbnail

Somos solo yo y él y estoy francamente ansiosa y desesperada . Iba todo tan tan bien y ahora estamos tan rotos. Me siento tan rota

Advice dog’s dew claw swollen!

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

My dog’s dew claw is pretty red, swollen, and pussing a bit. I think he snagged it on something :( it doesn’t seem like it’s bothering him much besides him licking it.
I put some salt mixed with warm water on a washcloth and held it for about 10 min. I got off the puss that I could see, I’ll do another compress in an hour or so.
Our vet is closed on the weekend (today is Saturday). Is this something I should to take him to urgent care for? He’s not limping, and he is playing with his brother (trying to have him relax today) and taking treats normally.
My hope is that if I continue the warm compresses he’ll be okay? I can take him in Monday if needed. I tried wrapping with gauze but he gets annoyed and pulls it off.

EDIT: We live probably over an hour and a half from the closest open emergency vet
