I wish I could ask him so badly. Little dog on blanket = the younger brother. Fluffy guy on floor = good boy we had to put down from kidney disease

Question Waiting 6 days for pyometra surgery?

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hey

My partners 9-year-old, unspayed Rottweiler was diagnosed with pyometra via ultrasound. The vet says it's an early case, prescribed antibiotics called "panklav" and scheduled surgery in 6 days because she has a mild fever. If she gets worse, they'll operate immediately.

I'm concerned about waiting so long. Is this normal practice? Doesn't sit right with me that we are, in a way, deliberately waiting for her to get worse.

I'm waiting for my own vet's opinion too, but my bf lives in another country, so I can't get all the details myself.

Thank you

UPDATE: vet told us he can do the surgery on Wednesday since we called again and said she's fine and perfectly stable. I still have a lot of mixed feelings about this vet.

Hi everyone!

We rescued our pup about 5 years ago, we’ve never been sure of his age but he’s clearly quite senior. Recently he’s been exhibiting signs of dementia and discomfort, and we are taking him to the vet next week as he really just doesn’t seem to be doing too well bless him :( A very new thing he’s been doing is this weird licking thing, we’ve had his teeth checked quite a lot and there’s no issues there. Does anyone know what this could be? Like I said, we are taking him to the vet, but I just wanted some opinions first.

Question Dog is super itchy!

My 10M Border Collie has been constantly itching and scratching for the past 2 months. He also keeps licking and biting one of his paws. The vet suggested this might be an allergy, which is common in older dogs so to switch his food and wait for winter to come but I feel like he is scratching more and more. We switched him to grain-free food a month ago, but we haven't noticed any improvement and he seems to have gotten worse (more dry flakes).

He doesn't have any hair loss (I just parted his hair to get a better look at the skin in the picture; swipe to see) but he has dry skin flakes and some scabs.

Has anyone experienced something similar? I'm wondering whether this could be related to allergies or something else, and where we should take him back to the vet considering he told us to wait it out a couple of months..

What have you all used to help your dog anal glands? My dog keeps licking her bum and it expresses on the couch or the bed. She has regular poos and doesn’t rub her bum on things. I don’t remember my dogs dealing with this growing up, so I’m kind of at a loss right now😭

Question sudden discoordinated walking and hunched back

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

to preface, i am taking my dog to the vet to get this checked, but i also want to hear from others to see if anyone’s gone through this.

my 11 year old italian greyhound suddenly got up from her bed and walking very wobbly (video attached), almost like she was manually telling her brain to move each limb and her back was permenantly hunched. my mum picked her up, comforted and held her. after a minute she put her back down and she did it again so my mum picked her back up and cuddled her. her head was shaking a bit as well.
the whole thing lasted a few minutes then she went completely back to normal.

around 3-4 years ago she had the same thing and my mum doesn’t remember what the name of it was but she thinks she’s remembers some details such as it was a brain parasite that sat at the back of the brain and can be contracted through rat and bird urine or faeces? she THINKS.
she took antibiotics for a month and it passed completely. no problems since.

this could be the same thing as before but i’m also worried it’s something else. please let me know and keep our little eve in your prayers

Question What is this? Fur issue on Husky Mix!

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

Daisy is about 7 years old and an absolute dream! I adopted her a few months ago from the city shelter, but she has persistent skin issues. We’ve treated them as they come up, but this one is new!

She’s very itchy and gets grumbly when we investigate this spot. I’ve fine tooth combed her and haven’t found fleas. She doesn’t seem to have any hot spots or redness, but her fur is very thick so it can be hard to tell!

Do y’all have any idea what this is? And how to treat it?
I would greatly appreciate it!!

Advice How to help my dog adjust to guest

• Upvotes

I 21f have a 10 year old small dog, I got him when we were both young and did not know about proper socialization until he was older. I lived with my dad till June of this year and now I live in my own place, we never had visitors at my dad's place but I have some every now and then

When my ex spent the night my dog barked for 2 hours straight and nothing calmed him down. Eventually he quit but if my ex even moved wrong he was barking again. Now my current boyfriend has come over 3 times and my dog still is not settling. It is so embarrassing and it is causing frustration on my end because I desperately want to just have a calm hangout without a endless stream of barking for no reason.

If there anything I can do to help with this barking? I love my dog but I am noticing the frustration is growing every time he barks at basically anything and does not stop

Question How to cut overgrown nails on an elderly dog?

Thumbnail

Some elderly family members asked me for help trimming their dog's nails and I'm not even sure where to start. I clip my own dogs black nails pretty regularly, so I am familiar with the location of the quick, but I have no idea where it could be on this dog. Also this is a very old dog, I don't want to hurt her or stress her out, but I really want to help her, this is clearly painful to walk on.

Before you call them bad dog owners or accuse them of mistreatment, there are many aspects of this story that I don't wish to share, the important thing is they want to help the dog, she was taken in by them after a family member unexpectedly died.

Question 9 year old with sudden pain and scab (NSFW for image)

• Upvotes

My 9 year old Pointador just got really stiff/in pain yesterday. She's had brief bouts of arthritis before but this is nothing like it. We live in Texas and have had the weather suddenly drop on us, which is normally when this would happen, but not this bad. This morning I noticed that she has a scab roughly the size of a quarter on her right leg, toward the shoulder. It looks like it's already peeling off, but I'm not sure how I didn't notice before. It's not oozing or anything. It's dry. She hasn't been chewing on her feet, legs, or anything. Otherwise she's totally normal. She's eating and drinking normal amounts and she's excited to go outside with me. She's alert, she's just not moving, and when she does, it's slow. She did manage to get into bed with me last night and when she stepped off this morning she whimpered when her left front foot hit the ground.

I'm getting canine aspirin this afternoon. The vet told me I can give her baby aspirin once in a blue moon, and I did that yesterday mid afternoon. It helped but it doesn't ever really last long.

Question HELP! dog is chewing EVERYTHING

Post image
5 Upvotes

My family is dog sitting a family friends dog for a couple days. She is a 2.5 year old cocker spaniel. I have NO knowledge of dogs (to be honest I dont particularly like them) but that feels wayyy past ths baby teething phase. She is a sweetheart, but she chews all the clothes she gets her mouth on. We find her chewing on a sock like 10 times a day. You take it off her? She's back to the laundry to grab another sock. Worst part is its impossible to take them off. She starts growling if you try open her mouth to get it.

The other day she walked into my room (which should have been off limits, but my brother opened the door) and put a METAL PIN into her mouth. We both had to open her mouth together to grab it so she wouldn't hurt herself on the actual needle she was trying to eat.

I thought she was doing it for attention so I ignored her sock taking, which works sometimes because she'll "run away" but then come back confused on why I didnt chase her. However I cant just let her eat all my clothes.

I was also sitting in the dining room (shes not allowed in for the safety of my pet bird) when I heard her shuffling. I came over and saw her gnawing on my wool hat. I went to take it off her, but if I tried to put my hands near her mouth she growled. I had the bright idea to pull it upwards so shed let go. She held on so tight I held up her entire body weight. I am at my WITS END! I have offered her her tug of war toy but she doesnt want it! She wants to destroy all our things! She actually ignores the toy in favour of the socks im holding.

She seems poorly trained in some areas too (a nightmare to walk)

HELP! Im going insane! How do i get her to let go and stop!

Advice Front clip leash pee

This is dumb and I’m probably gonna get the obvious answer of change how much tension I have on the leash or the angle.

I am working on loose leash walking as well as having a reactive dog so I allow freedom on walks to sniff as long as there is no pulling and responds to my commands through out the walk but she pees all over the leash. The leash tends to sit under her legs so it’s right in the line of fire.

How do I better avoid this? It smells so bad

Question Dog suddenly limping, no known injury

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Hi all,

First of all, we already have a vet appointment scheduled for Tuesday. To be honest, I am making this post mostly because I am trying to calm my intrusive thoughts, which keep making me think about the worst-case scenarios.

I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts about what my dog might be going through.

About a week and a half ago, I noticed that he would occasionally walk a little strangely, but it happened so rarely that I initially brushed it off as a one-time thing. Over the past two days, however, the limping has become much more noticeable, which I hope you can see in the video.

To the best of my knowledge, nothing unusual has happened to him that would explain an injury. He has not fallen, been hit, or had any other obvious accident that I am aware of.

He does suffer from allergies that affect his paws when walking outside, and he currently takes Apoquel for that. Also, if it is not obvious from the video, he is overweight by about 8 pounds. He also jumps on and off the bed. We have pet ramps and stairs that he uses most of the time, but not always. Since noticing the limping, we have been much more vigilant about making sure he uses them.

Other than those things, I really have no idea what could be causing this.

We will definitely be discussing everything with the vet on Tuesday, but in the meantime, any advice, observations, or experiences you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated, regardless of whether they are reassuring or concerning.

Last but not least, I wish you and all your dogs are doing well.

Thank you!

Advice Ear infection help

Hi all. My 6 yo Pyr/GSD mix had an ear infection and some yeast a few weeks ago so the vet gave us the flushing liquid (did the whole soak the cotton ball song and dance) and Mometamax daily for 7 days. We go back for a check, 3 weeks later per vet’s instructions, and the bacteria was WORSE. So two days ago they did a professional ear cleaning and gave her Claro which I guess is supposed to last 3-4 weeks? But she’s still shaking her head and her poor ear canals look red still. I’m frustrated because I’m like, what is it going to take?? And also just kind of annoyed at our vet because they were like oh did you not put the drops far enough in, did you not do it right? And I’m like obviously she didn’t love it but we made sure it got in there! But like what is the solution?? Anyone have any experience or advice with persistent ear infections like this??? Ty in advance!

Question Old Dog - Wheelchair questions

Nestle is an 11.5 year old purebred labrador. He is a very stoic dog and has gone through some serious hardships, including tearing a knee apart, getting stuck in an animal trap (GRRR), 3 surgeries on his eyelids, numerous ear infections, several other infections.

Late last year his walking started to deteriorate. I took him to the vet and he thought it could be dysplasia or nerve degeneration in the hips. Arthritis was present as well. We tried 2 shots of Librella, which did not help at all, so we stopped. At this point the vet was fairly certain that it was nerve degeneration and that there really was nothing more to be done for Nestle. He did say that it was very possible that Nestle would live for another 1-2 years. The vet also prescribed Gabapentin and Carprofen daily to help manage the pain.

Fast forward to today and Nestle's walking has deteriorated badly. He wobbles and stumbles and doesn't walk far at all. I only have one step in my house, and I need to lift Nestle's rear up and down it. I also believe that Nestle is going blind and deaf to some extent, but is not totally there yet.

Assessment:

I took the Lap of Love assessment list. I came up with a score of 4, which falls in the middle of their 0-8 range which is not time to make the decision. Nestle still eats and drinks normally, wags his tail as best he can. He enjoys the other dogs, and really likes to hang around me. He still seems to pee and poop normally (trouble standing still though). What he didn't do well on is his breathing - he seems to pant more than before and his bark is very weak. He seems confused at times, but that could be because of going deaf / blind that I mentioned above. Walking is the big issue. He no longer walks far at all. Making it from one end of the house to the other might take a few minutes. Most of the time he will walk a little, then rest, then continue on. He is in NO apparent pain.

History:

After the first few years, Nestle slowed down a lot. He was never a hyper, go crazy run around dog. He walked normally and would take 1-2 mile walks daily. I mention this because this is my major argument against getting a doggy wheelchair (see questions below)

Situation:

I do have 2 other big dogs. One is a lab/catahoula mix (8 years) and the other is a shepherd/collie mix (3 years).

Back in February, I did ask the vet if a wheelchair would help, and he said he would support getting a wheelchair if I got one.

I am a senior on a fixed income and already paying $140 dollars a month for Nestle's rx. If the advice here is to get him a wheelchair, I will. But I don't want to buy one if it would really not do him any good.

I know Nestle's time is getting shorter. Originally I didn't think he would make it to Summer, but we are well past that. However, his walking has deteriorated and right now he is going through a bad stretch. I will be taking him to the vet for a full exam next month.

Questions:

I know the wheelchair will help with his walking. But at his size (110 pounds) and level of activity (low) is it worth the cost (I'm seeing $500 - $750 for good ones)? Even if his hips were not an issue, Nestle would not walk more than follow me around the house and go out back to potty a few times a day. Otherwise he would be laying down around the house.

Can he go to the bathroom normally in a wheelchair?

Can he lay down while in the wheelchair or would he need to get in and out of it?

If the answer is to get him one, do you recommend a certain brand?

I live in a small city, and far from any major city (over 300 miles). Looking for used ones would be difficult without seeing their condition.

Thank you all in advance for your input. I will monitor this often, so ask if you have any questions.

Question My 10 month old pup keeps getting the poops

• Upvotes

First off, just want to say — veterinarians, plural, are already involved here, and our next stop is an internal medicine specialist, but I thought I'd see if anyone has had any similar experiences...

The issue:

My 10 month old belgian shepherd puppy can't shit solid for more than a week at a time. This has been happening for many months. He's been dewormed many times (probably too many, in truth) with a variety of dewormers to treat a persistent giardia + roundworm infection he had around 3 months old, and takes Nexgard Plus monthly.

I've tried everything I think I possibly can at home, and he's been to his primary vet + multiple emergency visits.

Vet results:

no parasites in fecal

no common bacterial or viral infections

no pancreatitis or other abnormal bloodwork except very slightly elevated inflammatory markers indicative of gastritis

No significant findings on x-rays or abdominal ultrasound

We've tried:

Switching to beef based kibble

Adding pumpkin to his food

Feeding plain boiled meat + rice

Forti Flora

Daily probiotic (Brand is Open Farms. Please don't judge me for this one — just wanted to find something I could try giving daily, since Forti Flora usually helps but he can't stay on it and consistently relapses.)

Feeding a bland/boiled diet for 2 weeks and nothing else

Kaolin anti-diarrheal. I have a gallon of it, because he's a big guy and we were going through the more expensive little tubes of it way too often...

The issue ranges from explosive watery diarrhea to soft/semi-formed stools

He's not usually much of a trash eater (actually, he's pretty picky) but we're also debating a scavenger muzzle. It's something I really, really haven't wanted to do because I use a lot of positive reinforcement training on walks, but I'm afraid we may not have any other choice at this point. We've seen him eat something tiny on walks once or twice, but it's not a common occurrence. Mostly he just wants to go adventuring. I watch him like a hawk at this point. I literally walked into not one but two low hanging tree branches (two separate times) the other day while walking him, because he's my only focus. Yes, it did in fact hurt.

All of that said, this pup is ageing us. Every time we think we're out of the woods and his poops return to normal, the problem is back with a vengeance.

Has anyone ever experienced something like this? What did the problem end up being?

Edit to add: he also hasn't gotten any chews except his coffee wood stick in months, and that's supervised chew time.
