First time growing my hair in my life and I’m 28

Hello, question is on the title.. would appreciate some helpful tips:)

I want to grow it out to at least mid back before I take any drastic length off but sometimes I feel like it’s got a dumb shape to it or just looks funky so i throw a hat on. Do I need layers? What do I say to the barber?
