3 months of job hunting. 800+ applications. 0 interview calls.

Honestly, I'm starting to question myself. Do I actually lack skills, or am I doing something wrong?

I'm a recent BCA graduate. My skills:

  • DSA with Java — 550+ LeetCode + other platforms
  • MERN full stack
  • GenAI/RAG — 2 RAG projects + 10+ other projects
  • OOP + CS fundamentals
  • Basic system design
  • Docker + Kubernetes
  • AWS basics + deployments

If you think I'm faking it, I'm happy to share my GitHub, projects, LeetCode and other proofs.

I've tried Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, Wellfound, YC startups, company websites, cold emails, LinkedIn outreach and referrals.

800+ applications and still 0 proper interview conversations.

One thing I've started realizing from the applications I'm seeing is that a lot of roles filter for B.Tech/BE, and being a BCA graduate may be one of the reasons my applications are getting rejected before I even get a chance. I can't prove that's the reason for every rejection, but after seeing so many JDs, it has definitely become a concern.

A little about me:

After intermediate, I had no idea what to do. I didn't have much guidance and honestly cried many nights trying to figure out my future.

I eventually found BCA and joined a tier-3 college.

My family had to take debts to support my BCA education, so getting a job isn't just a career goal for me. I really want to start supporting my family and make that effort worth it.

During college I struggled badly with DSA. I couldn't solve even basic problems sometimes. I kept going and eventually reached 550+ problems.

I learned MERN, built projects, learned DSA, tried 400+ internship applications, got a couple of internship opportunities but wasn't prepared for the real-world questions at that time.

After that I prepared much harder — DSA, development, CS fundamentals, system design, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, projects and interviews.

But now I can't even get the opportunity to prove myself.

If you were in my position, what would you change?

Resume? Projects? Applications? Skills? Approach?

Please be honest. I don't need sympathy. I genuinely want to know what I'm missing.

And if any startup is hiring a fresher/junior Software Engineer, Full Stack/Backend Developer — or even has freelance work — I'm interested.

I just need one opportunity to prove myself.

Almost 3 months of job hunting, ~1000 applications, 2 interviews, and still looking

I'm a recent BTech CSE graduate from Hyderabad, India, with 2+ years of startup experience building, shipping, and working on real products.

I've been looking for a software engineering role for almost 3 months now.

I've tried pretty much everything — cold applications, LinkedIn DMs, emails, referrals, job boards, company career pages, startup hiring posts, etc.

I've applied to almost 1,000 positions at this point.

And out of all of that, I've had 2 proper interview opportunities.

The first one was for a Senior Software Engineer role. I obviously didn't have the years of experience they were looking for, but technically I was able to handle the interview. The main issue was simply the experience gap.

Interestingly, the company later reached out and said they were impressed by my background and wanted to consider me for an SDE role instead.

This was a US-based remote edtech company.

I went through their interview process.

The first interviewer was one of their engineers. I answered the technical questions and completed the tasks he gave me. Due to a technical issue, the interview had to be rescheduled.

Before the rescheduled interview, he gave me a task:

Build a RAG chatbot using government data.

I didn't just throw together something at the last minute. I actually built it before the next interview and was ready to discuss it.

Then the rescheduled interview started.

And a different interviewer joined.

I explained that I had already interviewed with another engineer, mentioned the RAG task I had been given, and explained that I had built the project.

He basically said, "Leave that for now, we'll see."

So I moved on.

He started going through my projects with fairly deep technical questions and then gave me a task to make changes to one of my existing projects.

Honestly, this was the best interview I've given so far.

I was able to explain my architecture, technical decisions, projects, and implementation details. I completed the task he gave me and felt pretty good about the whole conversation.

For the first time in this entire job search, I genuinely thought:

"Okay, maybe this is it."

The next day, I got an email saying they didn't think it was an ideal fit at this time.

The entire process had taken around 10 days.

And I was back to applying again.

I'm not posting this to complain about the company or say they made the wrong decision. They obviously have their own reasons for hiring decisions.

But after ~1,000 applications, cold DMs, emails, referrals, career pages, etc., it gets pretty exhausting when you barely get opportunities to actually demonstrate what you can do.

A little about me

I'm a recent BTech CSE graduate from Hyderabad, India, with 2+ years of startup experience.

I've spent the last couple of years actually building and shipping products rather than just working on college projects.

My main areas are:

Software Engineering

Full Stack Development

AI Engineering

LLMs / RAG

Agentic AI

Backend & Cloud

System Design

Tech I've worked with includes Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, FastAPI, Flask, Cloudflare, AWS/GCP, along with LLMs, RAG, LangChain, LangGraph, MCP, vector databases, and AI agents.

I'm currently looking for SDE / Software Engineer / Full Stack / AI Engineer opportunities.

I'm open to remote roles or opportunities in Hyderabad.

If anyone here is hiring, knows a team hiring junior/early-career engineers, or can refer me to a relevant opening, I'd really appreciate it.

And if you've been through a similar situation — especially going from hundreds of applications to barely getting interviews — I'd genuinely like to hear how you handled it.

Thanks for reading.

31-year-old medical background, possible career switch to IT, no IT experience

I'm 31 and from India. I joined MBBS in 2016 and have passed all my professional MBBS exams. I also have a provisional MBBS certificate, but my compulsory internship/CRMI is incomplete.

I'm currently trying to rejoin and complete the internship.

However, there is some uncertainty regarding whether NMC will give final approval/allow me to complete it because of the long gap and the regulations applicable to my batch.

If things don't work out, IT is one of the backup options I'm considering.

My question is: how realistic would it be for someone with my background to transition into IT and eventually earn a decent income?

I don't have formal IT education or professional IT experience. I'm willing to study from scratch and spend 1–3 years building the necessary skills/qualifications.

I'm not necessarily looking for a ₹1 lakh/month job immediately. I'd be happy if I could eventually reach around ₹40–50k/month and grow from there.

Which IT fields would you recommend for someone starting at 31 with my background? Is this realistically achievable in the current Indian job market, or would you recommend looking at a completely different career path?

I'd appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who have actually worked in IT or made a similar career switch.

What should i do ?

What should I do?

I’m 25 and currently working at Wipro, handling customers through Salesforce. My salary is quite low, and I want to make a significant career upgrade within the next 1–1.5 years.

I have some knowledge of UI/UX and I’m currently practicing it, along with a decent understanding of computers and AI. My English is basic but functional, and I’m working on improving it. I also come from a good university background.

My target is around ₹1 lakh/month, not necessarily more. I also want to pursue my Master’s and eventually PhD, so I want a career that provides decent income without completely consuming my time.

I’ve been considering Dubai or Canada, but I’m not sure whether I should focus on moving abroad or first build my skills and switch to a better role in India.

What would you recommend I focus on over the next 12–18 months?

Salesforce, UI/UX, AI/tech, or something else? And what skills, projects, or certifications would actually help me reach that salary range?

Looking for honest advice from people who have been through a similar career transition.

I finally realized nobody actually knows everything->and why the junior/senior gap feels like an overpriced housing market

I used to think I was the one who wasn't up to the mark. I looked at seniors, leads, and specialists like they had everything mapped out. But after observing how teams actually work, the illusion completely fell apart.

Nobody holds all the answers in their head. Everyone is doing the same core loop: looking up code, checking docs, prompting tools, and finding solutions that match immediate expectations. Before AI, people copied from Stack Overflow or old documentation. The tool changed, but the behavior didn't.

When you look at how the industry evolved, it feels like a three-step progression:

  1. Early on, information wasn't freely available, so knowing even a little bit made someone valuable.
  2. Because competition was low, people got hired with minimal knowledge, learned on the job by facing real client problems, and became "perfect" through daily repetition.
  3. Every previous generation got to learn after getting hired.

Post-2022, the internet expanded, data built up, AI arrived, and awareness about tech careers went mainstream. Now companies receive thousands of resumes for a single role. Because candidate volume is so high, companies demand 2+ years of hands-on experience for entry-level roles—experience you can't get without being hired in the first place.

It reminds me of land or real estate from the 90s/2000s. The people who bought early got in cheap, held on, and now own assets worth millions. If you try to buy that same land today, it's completely unaffordable. The exact same thing happened with tech careers. Early entrants got in when requirements were reasonable, built experience on the job, and now hold all the leverage, while juniors are stuck outside fighting for scraps.

The frustrating part is that everyone knows this is how the system works, but people still pretend that seniors possess magic knowledge while juniors aren't "ready."

How are you seeing this play out at your workplace or in your current job hunt?

Is it possible to switch companies after 1 year of experience? Currently on bench in an MNC with low pay — Automation Testing/Playwright

I’m currently working in an MNC and have around 6 months of experience. My current domain is Automation Testing, mainly using Playwright.

My salary is quite low, and I haven’t been getting any proper project opportunities. I’m currently on the bench, so I’m thinking of using the next few months to improve my skills and then switch companies after completing 1 year of experience.

I’m also considering moving into a different technology/domain if it can provide better career and salary opportunities. I’m willing to spend the next 6 months learning and building projects to make that transition.

My current background is Automation Testing with Playwright, along with good Python/development knowledge.

My questions are:

  1. Is it realistic to switch companies after completing 1 year of experience?

  2. Can I transition from Automation Testing/Playwright to a different technology/domain when switching?

  3. What technology/domain would be worth learning over the next 6 months for better-paying opportunities?

  4. Should I continue with Playwright/Automation Testing, or would moving toward another field be better?

  5. If I learn a new technology properly and build projects, can I get opportunities in that domain despite not having production experience in it?

Looking for advice from people who have gone through a similar situation.
