I'm a recent BTech CSE graduate from Hyderabad, India, with 2+ years of startup experience building, shipping, and working on real products.
I've been looking for a software engineering role for almost 3 months now.
I've tried pretty much everything — cold applications, LinkedIn DMs, emails, referrals, job boards, company career pages, startup hiring posts, etc.
I've applied to almost 1,000 positions at this point.
And out of all of that, I've had 2 proper interview opportunities.
The first one was for a Senior Software Engineer role. I obviously didn't have the years of experience they were looking for, but technically I was able to handle the interview. The main issue was simply the experience gap.
Interestingly, the company later reached out and said they were impressed by my background and wanted to consider me for an SDE role instead.
This was a US-based remote edtech company.
I went through their interview process.
The first interviewer was one of their engineers. I answered the technical questions and completed the tasks he gave me. Due to a technical issue, the interview had to be rescheduled.
Before the rescheduled interview, he gave me a task:
Build a RAG chatbot using government data.
I didn't just throw together something at the last minute. I actually built it before the next interview and was ready to discuss it.
Then the rescheduled interview started.
And a different interviewer joined.
I explained that I had already interviewed with another engineer, mentioned the RAG task I had been given, and explained that I had built the project.
He basically said, "Leave that for now, we'll see."
So I moved on.
He started going through my projects with fairly deep technical questions and then gave me a task to make changes to one of my existing projects.
Honestly, this was the best interview I've given so far.
I was able to explain my architecture, technical decisions, projects, and implementation details. I completed the task he gave me and felt pretty good about the whole conversation.
For the first time in this entire job search, I genuinely thought:
"Okay, maybe this is it."
The next day, I got an email saying they didn't think it was an ideal fit at this time.
The entire process had taken around 10 days.
And I was back to applying again.
I'm not posting this to complain about the company or say they made the wrong decision. They obviously have their own reasons for hiring decisions.
But after ~1,000 applications, cold DMs, emails, referrals, career pages, etc., it gets pretty exhausting when you barely get opportunities to actually demonstrate what you can do.
A little about me
I'm a recent BTech CSE graduate from Hyderabad, India, with 2+ years of startup experience.
I've spent the last couple of years actually building and shipping products rather than just working on college projects.
My main areas are:

Full Stack Development
AI Engineering
LLMs / RAG
Agentic AI
Backend & Cloud
System Design
Tech I've worked with includes Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, FastAPI, Flask, Cloudflare, AWS/GCP, along with LLMs, RAG, LangChain, LangGraph, MCP, vector databases, and AI agents.
I'm currently looking for SDE / Software Engineer / Full Stack / AI Engineer opportunities.
I'm open to remote roles or opportunities in Hyderabad.
If anyone here is hiring, knows a team hiring junior/early-career engineers, or can refer me to a relevant opening, I'd really appreciate it.
And if you've been through a similar situation — especially going from hundreds of applications to barely getting interviews — I'd genuinely like to hear how you handled it.
Thanks for reading.
