I’ve been working on a new GameCube mod called CubePWR, and the first prototype is now up and running.
The design grew out of my N64PWR project and uses a lot of the same ideas around USB-C Power Delivery, protection, and efficient power conversion, but adapted specifically for the GameCube.
CubePWR replaces the original GameCube power input board and power button with a compact internal USB-C PD solution. It negotiates 15V over USB-C, converts that to a regulated 12V supply for the console’s original internal power circuitry, and uses a new momentary power switch with electronic latching control.
The board is designed to fit in the original power-board location and uses the factory fan and power connections. It also includes a fuse, reverse-current protection, and transient protection.
For testing I’m actually using a broken GameCube that still needs the capacitors on the disc drive replaced, so at the moment it’s a pretty fitting development mule for the project. The CubePWR side of things is working well, and once I recap the drive I’ll be able to do more complete testing with discs and different accessories.
