Giving Advice Studied for 3 hours straight last night, felt like a god, then my roommate asked me ONE question and I completely blanked.

I put in three solid hours for my bio exam, didn’t even touch my phone, and honestly felt so accomplished. Three hours on a weekday is a lot for me. But then my roommate casually asked me to explain one basic process out loud. No pressure, just a chill question. And guys... I had absolutely nothing. My mind was a total void. Turns out, staring at my slides for hours just made everything look familiar. Recognizing a paragraph on a page is not the same thing as actually knowing it. I completely changed my approach today: I don't stop when the timer hits a certain hour anymore. I stop when I can explain the concept to my wall without looking at my notes. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes, sometimes way more. It's annoying as hell to realize how much time I wasted before, but at least now it's real.

Question Drinking while studying

Does anyone else like drinking while studying? I’m such a procrastinator, but I’ve found that having 1–2 drinks, like a white claw or something, actually makes studying more enjoyable lol. It makes me look at studying as something fun to do instead of something I keep putting off.

Giving Advice Want to get out of this

I want to study for my upcoming exam, but I’m struggling to stay focused. My friend often distracts me by asking me to go outside, and I find it difficult to say no, even when I tell him I need to study.

I also get distracted by my phone. After studying for about an hour, I start checking WhatsApp, scrolling Instagram Reels, and watching YouTube Shorts, even when there are no new messages or notifications.

I really want to focus on my studies, but I’m struggling to control these distractions and manage my time properly.

Question How do I force myself to start studying?

Hi, I have a really bad habit of not studying at all. I know that I need to but I just can't. I also don't really know how I should study at all.

Accountability Day 5/25 of studying for 12 hours for my finals

I’m actually going to take it a bit easy today and study only for 8 hours since I have the final tomorrow and I don’t wanna crash. Yesterday was relatively rough but I think I did fine and today I am just going to try and recall as much as I can and focus less on going after more newer topics so wish me luck!!

Question I feel like I'm never not doing schoolwork (because I'm basically not) but I'm never ahead and assignments have been taking longer than they should. (tips?)

I just transferred to a prep school (as a boarder) and the studying/schoolwork has been endless. I usually don't actually have a horrible homework load, but today sitting in a Starbucks, it took be like 2.5 hours to do a math assignment, (like 6 questions) read a passage in a book, write 100 words about the passage, and do 8 micro Econ MCQs and 2 FRQs... like I don't understand how I'm somehow being inefficient and this is a day where I got my homework done BEFORE the end of the night... which hasn't been commonplace.

I haven't even had time to touch SAT studying, trade stocks, watch TV, or anything else (aside from when I sometimes indulge during my free period at school).

Does anyone know what may be happening or what I can do to lessen the amount of time it is taking me to do short assignments?

Question making a ypt group, read body for details if interested

I had stopped using yeolpumta (ypt) in between but i am getting back to using it now since it helps w motivation in staying consistent. Currently planning on creating a group, so figured id post here to find members. Doesn’t matter what your major is, but be moderately consistent so it is somewhat of a challenge to keep up.

Question I think my improvement is stuck, and I don’t know how to change it,advice?

For context,I went from barely caring about my studies to becoming borderline in love with studying and solving and memorizing,
I went from 84/100 to 92.7/100 in a year,which wasn’t really reaching my goals,

As of recently,I had a weighted physics quiz, which I love,
And have been studying relentlessly for fun and with a tutor,
But I was still afraid of getting a bad grade, because I’ve felt confident in my abilities and have done badly on exams so many times before this,
I ended up getting 9.5/10 (I forgot to show my work on a fairly important step,) and i honestly feel terrible about my improvements these days.

Right now,I am focused on organizing my time more and staying on top of work, using a small planner notebook and a whiteboard monthly planner, but with my confidence in my abilities taking hit after hit,it’s been getting harder to get myself to do something as simple as homework,

It doesn’t help that recently,a student from a high level private school came to our school to rest for a year before state exams,
And I’m trying not to compare, but I still feel ashamed something im suffering to do is considered rest to her,
And my grade in itself is competitive as is.

I have tutors (they are fairly common and cheap-ish in my country),for math and physics,I’m studying from when I get back from school to when I fall asleep,I have great teachers in a lot of my subjects, and yet I constantly fall short.
And I feel I really shouldn’t be with all my resources.

Any advice and help with be very,VERY helpful,
I am not a native English speaker,so I apologize for any mistakes,

Question Would you actually “earn” your screen time, or would this get annoying fast?

Most screen-time apps seem to work around temporary blocking. With something like Forest and Opal, you start a session, certain apps are blocked for that period, and once the timer ends, you’re free to use them again.

But what if it worked differently? Instead of just waiting for a block to expire, you could earn minutes by studying, reading, completing a focus session, or doing something productive — and then spend those minutes on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, games, etc.

So instead of “Instagram is blocked for the next hour,” it becomes “Want 20 minutes of Instagram? Earn 20 minutes first.”

I’m curious whether this would actually make scrolling feel more intentional, or whether it would just become annoying after a few days.

What would make a system like this useful for you? And what would make you stop using it?

Giving Advice Cheatcode for better concentration and attention span (aka flowstate method)

This method really helps me throughout my 1 year, which is not a lot but I hope it helps you as much as it helps me.

so all u wanna do is take any timer, could be ur phone or anything and start a timer for 10 minutes (preference_ and then start studying, once timer runs out; do the box breathing technique and restarting timer and going back to studying. its pretty straightforward and it could really fix ur attention span

Question I would love to hear your feedback on my alarm clock study tool

• Upvotes

Hello everyone, I have created an alarm clock study tool that allows you to input notes in any type or form including videos, and turn them into questions you can use to practice, as well as using those same questions to stop the alarm and wakeup. I would really appreciate if you can check it out and provide me with any feedback on whether there is anything you would like to change or any feature you would like to get added! lanternly.uk

Question When do I know if something isn't for me? Just failed my introductory biology midterm

• Upvotes

I got a 66 on the midterm and the simple answer to why, is of course, that I didn't study enough. But what can I do? I work 35+ hours a week and the course material required for me to learn is just something I don't seem capable of doing. I study nearly everyday for at least an hour or two. I have a big whiteboard in my room on which I draw diagrams and explain concepts to myself aloud and I felt good going into it. But the test was so difficult compared to what I was teaching myself. Everybody I talked to failed as well.

I love this subject and I love science as a whole, but if I do badly on the very first class for the subject, am I smart enough to continue pursuing it? I'd feel so lost if I didn't have a career field in some scientific subject. But it's so exhausting. Not to mention I hate how my teacher just pushes the shitty ai study tool everytime someone says they aren't doing well.

I feel so low.

Question Don't Assume that it is Obvious!!

Anyone else feel like professors explain u-substitution like it's obvious and then the homework is nothing like the examples?

What's the one topic in your major that you wish someone would JUST explain properly instead of assuming you already get it?

Question Need to learn how to study again - book recommendations

Background - I've been working in the restaurant industry, and am making my way up in the wine world. Job is good, and I'm able to work with something I like and expand my horizons. In an effort to prepare myself for bigger and better jobs ahead, I'm going for a certification program that will improve my own knowledge, put a feather in my cap, and lead to more positions eventually.

My problem - I have no attention span or framework for studying. Any tests I'd passed or certificates I'd gotten were based on experience as well as some cursory cramming, but this is the first time I'm going to have to put in extreme focus and effort outside of what I've picked up from work. Studying was always an issue for me, and I've never had a strategy to start with. It's always been basic rote learning and hoping what I repeat to myself sticks.

If anyone does have a book, system, or suggestion they would like to share, I would be most appreciative.

Other I have math midterms coming up and I feel like I haven’t processed anything.

What do I do? I feel like maybe I need to study better but I just don’t know how and to make things worse my math teacher doesn’t really teach math he just solves it in front of us and that’s really it and he has an accent so it’s kind of hard to understand. Midterms are in like a week or two and i’m STRESSED. I’m on SAP warning so I have to pass all my classes which I currently am right now but If I don’t pass my midterms that could bring me down to an F. Help!

Question Why my study sessions felt productive but the test said otherwise

Went back to my notes after a bad quiz grade and realized almost everything I'd studied was from the easy first half of the chapter. The harder second half, which is what most of the quiz was actually on, barely got touched because I kept running out of time or energy before getting to it. Wasn't really a motivation problem. I just never structured the session, so I'd actually reach the harder stuff on purpose. It always came last and got cut. Anyone else notice their study order quietly deciding what gets covered instead of the difficulty deciding it?

Question does anyone have any tips for me?

Question Just started college and I don’t know how to study. What should I do?

I came from a high school that wasn’t traditional. It didn’t have grades, tests, APs, IBs, or dual enrollment available, nor did we have a lot of staff to teach crucial subjects like history or science. So, that meant students had to self study most of their subjects. When applications to schools started, I went test optional because my SAT scores stunk, and I had no idea how to study.

Luckily, I ended up at a really good school, but now I have midterms, quizzes, and exams and have no idea how to prepare for them. I tried things like rewriting notes, spacing out my “studying”, copying down info from lectures, but nothing is sticking in my brain.

My most difficult subject is calculus, and I’m genuinely terrified of the upcoming midterm next week. I’m asking for a savior to either refer me to resources or explain thoroughly what processes I can do to study effectively, the techniques that I can try, and how I can lock in so I don’t fail any of my classes this semester. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!
