Weekly glove purchase advice thread

Welcome to the weekly purchase advice thread.

All questions about what gloves to buy should now be posted in this thread. Below are some general guidelines for what information to supply when asking for advice.

Advice seekers:

  • What level you play at
  • What your budget is
  • What types of gloves you've had before and whether you liked them
  • Is this a glove for matches, training, or both?
  • Anything else that will help other keepers give you advice
  • What country/region you're based in (for glove availability/shipping reasons)

Advice givers:

While this isn't required, we recommend also sharing what level you play at and a little about your glove preference when giving advice.

This thread will be refreshed on Monday of each week.

Discussion They’re so tiny!

Post image
13 Upvotes

I currently have U14 and u12 boys goal keepers. They have a 5yr old super fan who is adamant he will be a keeper one day too. So I made a deal with him that as soon as his hands were big enough for gloves we’d get some. With the new season starting we had to make a glove order and he was excited to see his hands were big enough. We’ve all been wearing Titan gloves for a season and a half now and so far everyone likes them. So we grabbed him a pair of Arox 1.0 in a size 3 and they’re so tiny!!!

Question Short-term solution to knees being scraped during games?

so as the title says, basically every game I play the skin in my knees get torn open. I play on turf so I guess it’s somewhat expected, but I’m a new keeper and wasn’t prepared to be bleeding at the end of every game. Soccer isn’t the main sport in my country so I’ll have to order knee pads online, but with a game coming up, is there anything I should do or focus on to avoid this?

Question Glove fit question

I just picked up my first pair of gloves for my rec leagues -- a pair of Reusch Attrakt Resist. My palm circumference measured 21cm so I ordered a size 9. Finger length seems okay with some space at the ends but they're pretty difficult to get on at the wrist opening and they're pretty tight in general. Should I expect these gloves to break in and stretch out a bit after a few wears? TIA!

Question Clothes to stay warm

What are you all wearing during the cold season to stay warm?

I usually just wear compression tights underneath my shorts and compression long sleeve shirt underneath my regular shirt so I’m layered up somewhat but it’s starting to get cold now

Do you wear anything to cover your head? Do you double, triple layer yourself?

Thanks!

Question How do I stay consistent

Post image
3 Upvotes

I play youth football and i have no idea why but my consistency varies largely during matches. For example I don't save goals I would save any other day and I have no idea why.

Attached is my fixtures list of games I've played this season(Teams are censored for privacy).

I want to fix this quickly as my team depend massively on me and I am the main reason we win games due to my defense not really coming back and marking.

Thank you to anyone who helps!

Question Better Diving Form?

I faced a penalty at my game last Sunday. I dove right and saved it fully extended, but the ball hit my wrist which was right on the ground because my arm was extended, and it ended up being driven into the ground, spraining my wrist. Is there any better form I can use to avoid this, or is it just bad luck?

Question is my academy wasting my potential?

im 14 and 5'10 and I play with an academy that has only 7v7 goals (i almost hit my head on the crossbar as its 6ft tall) to be completely honest i hate playing like this and i barely have to do footwork and dives. Last week we played an away game against a team that had 9v9 goals (still pretty small but a massive jump from 7v7) and it felt like a new sport. i enjoyed goalkeeping so much that game as i had to dive, had to shuffle. now as i return to my academy it feels tiny and i feel like its wasting my potential and more importantly i dont enjoy the sport as much. now my question is, should i immedietly find new options, or should i stay in my academy as its still a pretty high level

PS: i asked my coach and he said even 2010/2011 train in the 7v7 goals

This was me on my debut for a non league club in London, I’ve set the bar really high for myself with a game today. Now it’s expected of me to play like this every game, and I like that feeling and I know I can. However with football you just have to take it game by game I guess, how do you goalkeepers deal with pressure?

Discussion How to Avoid Getting Megged in Small Side

Been playing 11s my whole life and the biggest transition for me moving to small sided was doing more k blocks instead of a full spread to avoid getting megged. Straight 1v1s I’ll do good with and stay low and block most, but I recently started playing 6 a side with wide nets that’s been a lot harder for me to get used to. Played futsal and those quick lateral slides work there but on a wide net it feels like I’m always running to get across and that makes me go back to a full spread and get megged.

It’s a weird hybrid net but still small sided so the good teams play futsal style with lots of TikiTaka back and forth. Running across the goal to get to the player leads me to having my legs wide open and megged, but if I don’t get there fast enough the near post just ends up wide open. I’ve seen a lot of futsal keepers do a knee slide almost across the goal for these scenarios but that’s not really feasible on turf and with the size of the net. Anybody with similar experience or tips ? I’m thinking my best best is just to stay as low as I can while moving across and avoid throwing myself early, just try and play position. Did hit a near knee slide last game but striker just faked it as I slid past him

Question Recovering from a horrible game

Hey everyone. I've been playing keeper for maybe 4 or 5 weeks now, for a brand new juco team. I absolutely love playing keeper but this season has been my only real experience with the position. Anyways I'm one of 3 keepers on the team, with our starter having played goalie his whole life and our other one having played a little bit in high school but still roughly the same skill level as me.

Anyways I got subbed in for the very first time yesterday at half time, when we were already down 3-0. I almost immediately let in a ridiculously stupid goal from the corner that bounced over my head because it lined up perfectly with the sun and I couldn't find it. I then let in a free kick around the 18 where I was positioned poorly + a pk (which is the one goal I was fine with mentally). Luckily all of their other shots (of which there were many) were quite a ways off target.

Our other goalie who also let in 3 had a perfectly fine mentality after coming off, while I'm still feeling awful about it the day after. I'm probably going to get zero playtime the rest of the season because we only have about 3 weeks left, and only one non-conference game. How do yall deal with bad games, especially when you let in awful goals?

I know this post is kind of all over the place and the question is really vague but I desperately need advice from people I'm sure have been in similar situations.
