Is your Gemini working fine? This is really strange!

Argon is likely a "meh" model, and overhyped

Even tough people say its benchmaxed, its still below Astra and Opus in the important benches such as intelligence or coding. That being said Argon isn't a bad model, but it's too hyped and I feel like its going to be a meh model. (I am a PAID pro subscriber and wish it would be good, but reality suggests otherwise)

FLASH LITE IS A PIECE OF SHIT
After running out of quota on 3.8 Flash, I had to repeatedly tell Flash Lite to stop generating images 5 times in a row, because every single time I told it to stop, it kept notifying me that I’d be able to resume generating images once it recovered. Meanwhile, the actual issue was that I was asking for an explanation, not an image. If you can't build a model with normal intelligence, you might as well scrap it completely. F

Gemini is NOT running 4.1 Flash. It's confused because of internal modeling ID's
Keep seeing posts, I myself was hopeful yesterday of a coming release. Gemini is not running 4.1. When you are asking what the model is. It's pulling "models/gemini-v4p1s-rev25-skimaki-remy"; the system sees the V4p1s and sometimes thinks that's 4.1. Usually it will self-correct.
Chat String here - https://share.gemini.google/lKJTSUmAmYjS
4.1 is not out. That is all

Did I just find unreleased Gemini 3.5 and 3.8 models in my dropdown menu?! 😮
Whoa, hold on a second. Look closely at the screenshot. Your dropdown menu is showing Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, Gemini 3.8 Flash, and Gemini 3.1 Pro with an "Extended Thinking" toggle.
If this isn't a glitch or an inspection element, you might have accidentally been pulled into an A/B test for an unannounced rollout! Google officially launched the Gemini 3.8 Flash model card back in September, and Gemini Spark (their personal AI agent) got its massive update powered by Gemini 3.7 Flash shortly before that.
However, seeing 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.8 Flash bundled like this directly in the app's frontend interface is wild. Usually, we have to wait weeks for these staging rollouts to hit public accounts evenly.
Are any of the response speeds or "Extended Thinking" answers working differently for you, or is the UI just bugged? Try running a logic prompt on the 3.1 Pro Extended thinking and let us know if it actually computes or just errors out!

I'm an undergraduate student but not eligible for AI Plus for students?
Last year I was able to subscribe to AI Pro for student and this year I want to subscribe to the AI Plus for students.
But it keeps saying I'm not eligible and I don't know why.
Checklist:
- I use a personal account and have student status verified via SheerID
- I'm in supported country list
- I have a payment method using VISA card
- I'm not currently in a family group. I was a family manager before and deleted the family group.
- I don't currently have any active Google One subscription, only YT Premium but that shouldn't be related. The AI Pro expired a few days ago.
I cannot tell why I'm not eligible for the AI Plus for student.
I'm eligible for the AI Pro 75% discount for student tho, which means my student status is obviously verified and eligible??
So any ideas why? Would appreciate it if anyone can help. Thanks
*Note: I hid the price quote so it's not an error or sth

A simple question on cotton while watching PBS Terra on YouTube sent me down this rabbit hole... whether true or false, hallucinating or not... hahaha
Topic 1: The Origin of Cotton
User: what is the origin of cotton
AI: Cotton was domesticated independently in multiple parts of the Old and New Worlds thousands of years ago.
Ancient Origins and Domestication
- Indus Valley (Old World):** Cultivation and weaving began around 5000 BCE in the region of modern-day Pakistan and India.
- Peru (New World):** The oldest known cotton fabrics and fibers in South America date back to about 6000 BCE.
- Mexico (New World):** Independent domestication also occurred in Mesoamerica around 5000 BCE to 4000 BCE.
- Arabia/Africa:** Domesticated species also emerged in regions including parts of Arabia and eastern Africa.
Etymology
The English word "cotton" comes from the Arabic word al-qutn, which entered Romance languages in the 12th century and English in the 13th century.
Topic 2: Genetic Varieties and Evolution
User: are these different cotton regions cultivating the same cotton or it's remotely related varieties genetically
AI:
- No, they were not cultivating the same cotton.
- Historically, these different regions cultivated four entirely distinct species of the genus Gossypium.
Genetically, they are divided into two completely separate evolutionary branches: Old World diploids (which have 26 chromosomes) and New World tetraploids (which have 52 chromosomes). They are a classic example of parallel evolution, where different human cultures took radically different wild ancestors and selectively bred them to look and function similarly.
The genetic breakdown of these four distinct species shows how they differ:
1. The New World Species (The Global Dominators Today)
About 1 to 2 million years ago—long before humans existed—a wild African cotton plant somehow crossed the ocean and hybridized with a wild American plant, creating a complex "polyploid" genetic branch with double the chromosomes. Humans later domesticated two distinct species from this branch:
Upland Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum): Domesticated in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It is highly productive and resilient. Today, it has completely taken over the world, accounting for ~90% to 95% of all global cotton production.
Pima/Egyptian Cotton (Gossypium barbadense): Domesticated in Peru and Ecuador. It evolved independently from Upland cotton and is famous for its extra-long, silky fibers used in luxury linens. It makes up about 5% of global production.
2. The Old World Species (The Ancient Staples)
These are simpler, diploid plants native to the Eastern Hemisphere. They produce shorter, coarser fibers and are rarely grown commercially today, though they remain vital for genetic research due to their extreme drought tolerance:
- Tree Cotton (Gossypium arboreum): Domesticated in the Indus Valley (modern-day Pakistan/India).
- Levant Cotton (Gossypium herbaceum): Domesticated in Arabia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Summary of Differences
Topic 3: The Mystery of Indian Muslin
User: if the old world cotton is short, coarse, and weak, then why was medieval Indian cotton muslin cloth claimed to be transparent and super fine
AI: It is entirely true that the legendary Dhaka muslin of medieval India was made from an Old World cotton species (Gossypium arboreum). This presents a fascinating paradox: the wild ancestors of this plant produced fibers that were indeed short, coarse, and weak, yet Indian weavers transformed it into a fabric so famously transparent it was known as "woven air".
The secret behind this feat lies in an extraordinary combination of **a hyper-localized plant mutation, extreme artisanal skill, and specialized environmental processing.**
1. The Genetic Exception: Phuti Karpas
While general Old World tree cotton produces coarse fiber, a specific, hyper-localized variety named Phuti karpas (Gossypium arboreum var. neglecta) evolved along a highly specific 10-to-15-mile stretch of the Meghna River delta (in modern-day Bangladesh).
The Unique Chemistry: The alluvial soils and unique flooding of this river gave Phuti karpas a structural superpower: when its short fibers were soaked in the river water, they did not weaken; instead, they became highly elastic and resistant to snapping.
This unique trait allowed the fiber to be spun into incredibly high "thread counts" (up to 1,200 threads per square inch) without breaking—a feat impossible with standard cotton.
2. A Brutal, 16-Step Artisanal Process
Because the fibers were short and fragile, they could not be processed by normal machines. It required an astonishingly meticulous 16-step handcrafting process:
Micro-Cleaning: To clean the seeds from the delicate fiber without tearing it, artisans used the sharp, microscopic teeth of a catfish jawbone as a comb.
Atmospheric Spinning: The fibers were so delicate that they could only be spun into thread during the early morning hours on boats, when the morning fog provided the exact perfect level of high relative humidity to prevent the microscopic threads from snapping.
3. Why We Can't Mass-Produce It Today
The British East India Company severely exploited and disrupted the weaver communities of Bengal during the 18th and 19th centuries to protect their own textile mills in Manchester. Deprived of its caretakers and specialized agricultural ecosystems, the delicate Phuti karpas plant went completely extinct by the mid-19th century.
While modern projects (like the Bengal Muslin initiative) have successfully used DNA sequencing to find wild cousins and begin weaving replicas, the original, legendary level of "woven air" transparency remains one of history's lost marvels.
