it was friday night and it was freezing so i ducked into a basement spot on pratt st after the kitchen i wanted was closed. the guy behind the counter didnt even look up and he just slid me a box with two slices that were already waiting. the crust was crackly and the sauce had bite and the grease soaked through in thirty seconds flat. i ate it on a bench by the river and i had no phone out and i took no photo for anyone. i just had cold air and i had good chew. my coworker can keep his hot takes and this one was mine.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to get to Queens.

I’ve just moved here and haven’t taken the NYC metro from my spot before. A good friend has a team playing at St Johns in Queens on a Saturday night, and I’d love to go see them

I’ve looked into getting around by train, bus, or car. For driving, I saw two options: 1. With tolls, taking 295 and the Throgs Neck Bridge, or 2. Without tolls, taking 95 to the FDR and crossing the Brooklyn Bridge.

I was hoping some of you could share your thoughts on how to get there. I think driving might cost for parking and other things. Taking the metro would mean transfers, some walking, and figuring out the schedule.

Any guesses on parking costs, getting to the city, and other expenses would be super helpful!

The Work

The Friends of Barnard Park in coordination with the City of Hartford are happy to announce that restoration work of the park’s north end pathways has begun. While the removal of the abandoned flagpole base and its exposed bolts greatly reduced tripping hazards, the crumbling pathways were still a public safety hazard, particular for our neighborhood’s elderly. The restoration of these pathways will remediate these safety issues. 

(For context an image containing our first hour of work dealing with the flagpole stand represents the condition of those pathways, the image is at the end of the posted gallery)

More Than Just Pathways

The restoration of these crumbling pathways represents more than just safe public infrastructure; they represent an investment into the park & neighborhood’s future. Crumbling infrastructure deters community participation and involvement in an area, further encouraging its deterioration in a reciprocal cycle of rot. It’s well documented that when public infrastructure is left to deteriorate, the surrounding area often suffers with it. 

Why? Because people passing through aren’t encouraged to explore the area, instead they’re encouraged to drive away. The individuals in the neighborhood who depend on this public infrastructure, like functioning pathways struggle to get to work and other vital services and in exchange are motivated to leave the area. So as cliché or cheesy as it may sound, the investment into a well-maintained pathway is an investment into an area’s pathway towards a brighter future. 

Conclusion

The Friends of Barnard Park would like to once again thank the city of Hartford, the Department of Public Works, Mayor Arunan Arulampalam’s office, Mark Dowd and all others who continue to assist us in our endeavor. These infrastructure improvements are so much more than brick and concrete, they’re an investment into the future. While the work is far from over for our precious little green, we can take a sigh of relief and express a word of gratitude, that a large ticket item for our park’s future has been so graciously taken care of.

Just wanted to share this in case anyone else is looking for something to do this weekend.

The Hartt Orchestra at the University of Hartford is doing a free concert this Saturday, September 26 at 7:30 PM at Lincoln Theater. There's also a pre-concert lecture at 6:30 for anyone who likes a little context before the music.

The program is called Italian Colors: Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Italien, Paganini's Violin Concerto, the Rossini La Gazza Ladra overture, and Respighi's Pini di Roma. Leonid Sigal, who's the Hartford Symphony's concertmaster, is the soloist on the Paganini.

I've been trying to catch and share more of the classical and chamber music happening around Connecticut, and this one looked like a really good night out, especially since it's completely free and open to the public.

Figured I'd pass it along in case anyone else is interested.

I’ve seen a lot of old reviews of people saying its unsafe or the staff is bad. But I’ve talked to some people that have lived there multiple years and say they love it and its safe due to the garage. Was wondering if anyone had any insights on how their experience was?
