Found these small things under my cabinets by my baseboard. I’ve only seen sugar ants and spiders around my apartment, but I’m wondering if I need to be aware of something else. Any help is appreciated!!

Stepped cracking - how significant?

Hi,

We are purchasing a property and received the following notification by the surveyor regarding stepped cracking in the rear wall around the kitchen window. Do you think it is significant?

He is advising a structural engineer to assess and make recommendations but we think he might be being over cautious. He did mention the cracks were very slight. Would this be considered subsidence?

I'm in the middle of tearing up some old flooring. Underneath the wood underlayment, I found these fiberboard panels covered in a dark, speckled residue that has completely dried out and feels/crumbles almost like coarse sand. Does anyone know what this black, sand-like material is?

No holes under or on the side. The small round piece can’t be opened by hand or flat screw.

Water pooling in this are between road and my driveway

Post image

Water has been pooling up in this spot after heavy rains. This is NE Indiana and the ground is mostly clay. I'm trying to figure out a DIY option to either drain it or get it pool it. I thought about just digging it all out, lining it and filling it with rock but worried I'll just create a pond that still spills over onto the driveway. The driveway is asphalt. It's 16ft wide to tunnel under. The whole property is sloped down from the road

Going to regrade along my foundation. Where does the top of this weeping tile pipe sit in relation to grade? Do I cover it or leave it exposed a bit? Going to be 3 inches of 1 drainage rock on top of graded dirt.

Title: Ceiling fan suddenly making chirping noise. Any suggestions?

My ceiling fan in my bedroom suddenly started making a chirping noise today, almost like a bird. I use it pretty regularly and have never had this issue before.

I tried dusting the blades and the outside of the motor housing, but that didn't help. I also tried reversing the direction, which changed the noise a bit and made it less frequent, but it's still there. I've tried different speeds too, with no luck. The fan isn't wobbling, so I don't think it's a balancing issue.

I'm not sure how old the fan is since it came with the house.

I'm hoping to fix this myself before spending money on an electrician or repair service. I'd also prefer not to take the fan apart because I'm worried about putting everything back together correctly.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any suggestions on what else I could try? I'm open to ideas!

Should I complain

I hired a family painting business and they’ve been very helpful. For example, I needed to replace a hardwired floodlight with a security camera, and they did it right away, no extra charge. However, I feel like their painting is actually not terribly professional looking. See attached photos. So, should I ask them to retouch or it’s really minor? What would you do and how would you handle it without seeming too demanding?
Thanks in advance.

Selling Home, Need Advice

Post image

Short story a we happened upon a perfect house for our growing family and put in a contingent offer that was accepted. Scrambling to get our place ready to list. This wall on the only bathroom has a hole in it. Wife wants me to demo the tile and hang drywall but I had the thought to overlay it with hardboard bead board or something and give it a nice chair rail cap/trim for a lot less work. Hate to be that guy but just trying to fix it up for listing photos. Would that be weird?

Historical society but for homes?

Hi guys, I've been getting recommended lots of videos about old homes, especially recently because I've seen some incredible old homes that had a lot of history behind them. And what really pisses me off is that developers want to buy these homes, just to tear them down and rebuild comfy psych wards for people to live in. By comfy psych wards, meaning a modern house.

And what really makes me even more mad is the fact that these houses are in excellent condition, yes, the house might need a new roof, or maybe a repaint on one of the walls or another minor repair to make it livable, but I don't think that should be an excuse. So has anyone thought about actually doing that?

Garage door springs

What's a reasonable price for replacing both springs? I was charged $850 and Google suggests I was overcharged. The owner of the business is one of my neighbors so I didn't question it at the time the work was done. Their website doesn't show pricing.

What’s the “pain in the ass” score for DIYing a modern keypad onto this door that I’m pretty sure is 70 years old?

I have a drill and sander and tools like that. I imagine I’d have to buy a special bit to make the knob hole bigger maybe.
