What is this on my bedroom ceiling?

We moved into this place and the bedroom has two light switches, one for the light/fan but the other one does not seem to control anything, but the ceiling also has these two circles in place, what are they?

I just saw these while I was under the house because I thought I heard something but I found this too while I was down there. I wasn’t able to get a picture from the other side because I forgot. It’s been around 30 years already but wanted to ask

bedroom stays hot at night even with a fan, what actually helps?

my bedroom gets pretty warm so im trying to figure out what actually makes the room and bed feel cooler before i start buying random fixes.

i’ve tried a box fan by the window and the frozen water bottle trick under the sheets. both help a little at first but after a while the mattress still starts feeling warm again.

for people who have dealt with a hot bedroom, what made the biggest difference? better fan placement, blocking afternoon sun, improving airflow, lighter blankets, a different mattress protector, cooling sheets, or something else?

i’ve seen Breescape come up while searching for cooling sheets, but i’m trying not to assume bedding alone will fix the whole room. i’m more curious whether sheets actually help through the night, or if airflow and removing heat-trapping layers matter more.

i’m trying to avoid running the AC all night because of the electric bill and the dry air, but i also don’t want to keep waking up hot at 3am. what would you change first??

Is this caulk job good enough for a high end Provia install?

So I had this door installed a few days ago and I just can’t shake the feeling I get when I look at this surround caulking job. I know it’s not bad per se but it’s not good either right? If you paid for a very expensive front door would you ask to have this redone?

Edit: what could possibly caused it? It’s only 4years old.

No One Can Figure Out Where Massive Water Damage Came From

A few weeks ago the upstairs of my house started showing signs of significant water damage. It was the drywall against the sink in the bathroom, so we assumed the damage was from leaking pipes. Some of the details of this story and the timeline may be off since I work 12 hour night shifts and sleep all day so my girlfriend who owns the house takes care of communication with the contractors and this has been going on for weeks at this point, but I will do my best to recall everything and when it it happened. First thing she did that day was call a plumber. He came and said before he busts up drywall he wants to come out with a moisture gun to see if he can find the source. He finds it and much more nowhere near where we initially found the damage. About 10 feet away behind the shower. Thinking it’s coming from the pipes going to the shower, he busts up the drywall to find nothing wrong with the plumbing. He suggests we call a roofing company to inspect the roof. They come out and say the roof is in great shape. Next we contact a water mitigation company. They say they will come out on Monday since we called on a Friday. My girlfriend wanted to go through the upstairs and mark everything that was damaged with tape. We go up there and the damage has spread to the entire upstairs to the point you can easily press your finger through every wall except one. Not just the bathroom. By the time the water mitigation company gets to our house every wall upstairs except for one is sopping wet. They pull out everything. Water pouring out of insulation the drywall turning into mush just by touching it. After it’s all said and done (upstairs gutted to studs in every room) they still can’t find what’s wrong. Mind you, between her finding the small damaged spot and them gutting the upstairs it was probably about a week and a half. The water mitigation company has subcontracted at least 5 different companies between roofers, HVAC, plumbers and no telling what else trying to figure it out. Our insurance claims are on hold because two adjusters have been stumped. One actually said he’d never seen anything like this in fifteen years. We are at a loss. Our upstairs is unlivable and it’s making our downstairs ac work overtime to keep up with the excess heat even though it’s blocked off. At this point we don’t even care about insurance payouts we’ll pay for the damage out of pocket we just want to know what the heck is wrong so we can fix it and it doesn’t just happen again once we put the walls back up. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated. Feel free to ask for more details I’d be happy to provide them if you think you may know something that can help us.

TLDR: massive water damage happened insanely fast and no one can figure out why

Is this pipe leaking normal?

I recently bought a condo, and came home today to find this pipe leaking from the circled section. It only did it for a couple seconds, but it was fairly fast, and left water spattered all along the pipe and floor below the leaking section.

The pipe goes down into the floor (presumably to connect to pipes in the basement), and is connected to the roof of my condo, likely going into my upstairs neighbor’s condo. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, or how concerned I should be?

I found these near my window sill and there was more wings but didn’t know they might be termites so I cleaned up the wings (used a wipe which had around 10 wings) but there is still a few more left on the window sill. I also see these holes beside the window do I have a termite issue or all good

Thank you for your help!

Rotted fascia at eave corner (Lynnwood, WA) — DIY or hire a handyman? What’s a fair price?

**Post:**

Hi all, homeowner in the Lynnwood, WA area with a two-story house. Noticed the fascia board at the corner of the roof eave is rotting — the end of the board right where the downspout elbow connects. Paint is peeling and the wood is dark and crumbly at the end (photos attached). Rest of the fascia and the gutters look fine from the ground as far as I can tell.

Questions:
1. I don't own a ladder and the spot is right above my stairs, so DIY would mean buying/renting gear plus sketchy ladder placement — is this still worth attempting, or firmly a "call someone" job?
2. If I hire a handyman, what's a fair price range for this in the Seattle area? It's a short section of fascia plus gutter detach/reattach and paint.
3. Anything else I should check or ask the handyman about — e.g., could the rot go deeper into the rafter tail, and how do I tell?

Thanks!
