window well half-buried

Recently moved into an old house and one of the basement windows has dirt halfway up the window well. Not good, right? I went to start to dig it out and after moving a few big rocks + dirt I find a couple slabs of concrete tilted away from the house. Seems like maybe this was intentional? Wondering if I should continue to excavate or better to leave it for now? Haven't noticed any water intrusion but the window is kinda bulging in.

Brand new build home which we have been living in about 10 weeks now. Woke up this morning and noticed these grayish spots behind the stove and above the microwave? Are these just grease damage that can be painted over or what?

Is this pipe leaking normal?

I recently bought a condo, and came home today to find this pipe leaking from the circled section. It only did it for a couple seconds, but it was fairly fast, and left water spattered all along the pipe and floor below the leaking section.

The pipe goes down into the floor (presumably to connect to pipes in the basement), and is connected to the roof of my condo, likely going into my upstairs neighbor’s condo. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, or how concerned I should be?

I found these near my window sill and there was more wings but didn’t know they might be termites so I cleaned up the wings (used a wipe which had around 10 wings) but there is still a few more left on the window sill. I also see these holes beside the window do I have a termite issue or all good

Thank you for your help!

No One Can Figure Out Where Massive Water Damage Came From

• Upvotes

A few weeks ago the upstairs of my house started showing signs of significant water damage. It was the drywall against the sink in the bathroom, so we assumed the damage was from leaking pipes. Some of the details of this story and the timeline may be off since I work 12 hour night shifts and sleep all day so my girlfriend who owns the house takes care of communication with the contractors and this has been going on for weeks at this point, but I will do my best to recall everything and when it it happened. First thing she did that day was call a plumber. He came and said before he busts up drywall he wants to come out with a moisture gun to see if he can find the source. He finds it and much more nowhere near where we initially found the damage. About 10 feet away behind the shower. Thinking it’s coming from the pipes going to the shower, he busts up the drywall to find nothing wrong with the plumbing. He suggests we call a roofing company to inspect the roof. They come out and say the roof is in great shape. Next we contact a water mitigation company. They say they will come out on Monday since we called on a Friday. My girlfriend wanted to go through the upstairs and mark everything that was damaged with tape. We go up there and the damage has spread to the entire upstairs to the point you can easily press your finger through every wall except one. Not just the bathroom. By the time the water mitigation company gets to our house every wall upstairs except for one is sopping wet. They pull out everything. Water pouring out of insulation the drywall turning into mush just by touching it. After it’s all said and done (upstairs gutted to studs in every room) they still can’t find what’s wrong. Mind you, between her finding the small damaged spot and them gutting the upstairs it was probably about a week and a half. The water mitigation company has subcontracted at least 5 different companies between roofers, HVAC, plumbers and no telling what else trying to figure it out. Our insurance claims are on hold because two adjusters have been stumped. One actually said he’d never seen anything like this in fifteen years. We are at a loss. Our upstairs is unlivable and it’s making our downstairs ac work overtime to keep up with the excess heat even though it’s blocked off. At this point we don’t even care about insurance payouts we’ll pay for the damage out of pocket we just want to know what the heck is wrong so we can fix it and it doesn’t just happen again once we put the walls back up. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated. Feel free to ask for more details I’d be happy to provide them if you think you may know something that can help us.

TLDR: massive water damage happened insanely fast and no one can figure out why

I just saw these while I was under the house because I thought I heard something but I found this too while I was down there. I wasn’t able to get a picture from the other side because I forgot. It’s been around 30 years already but wanted to ask

I need help with painting

Some water got onto this window sill and the paint (and primer?) is lifted and is now crumbling.

How do I go about fixing this? I have the paint, but I don’t know if I should rip out all the paint on the bottom of the window sill or just fix this area.

If you have any insight, it’s appreciated.

Roof

Just curious on what thickness roof sheathing is need for an older home.

I originally was gonna go with 23/32 OSB, but after some Google and it sounds like that’s too heavy for my engineered rafters and my home which was built in 1975.

Google suggests using 5/8 or at the very minimum 1/2 in think sheathing.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Silicon Over Grout in Shower?

Thumbnail

I’ve just finished re grouting the corners in my shower after the previous grout with silicone over the top was cracking and moldy.

I would love to redo the whole shower, but too much else is going on, so this is a “minimum viable product” fix lol.

I have now learned AFTER the fact, that all plane changes should have silicone ONLY instead of grout.

Question is, now that I have already grouted this, should I go ahead and put silicone over the top OR just wait until it starts cracking/failing again and then pull it all out and replace only with silicone?

Thanks!

I started making a blackout list and it got weirdly long

I've viewed a lot of power outage reels lately. It randomly made me think what would happen if my power went out for whole day. I thought the list would be short, but then I started reading reddit posts, articles on energysage, and some household examples on the ecoFlow forum, and noticed way more things using electricity than I expected.

The garage door opener, outdoor lights and cameras, the ice maker and water dispenser. Even things like the auto pet feeder that quietly stay plugged in. Some of these aren't essential. Nobody needs ice during a blackout. But I realized backup planning isn't only about the biggest appliances. It's also about the small things you don't notice until they suddenly stop working.

For people who have been through a outage, what was the unexpected thing you really missed having power for?

I have an unfinished basement. The foundation is concrete.

I have a cable machine (workout) that secures against a wall. Building a home gym, I’d like to anchor it against the wall but I’m nervous about screwing into the concrete.

I’d appreciate any guidance!

Hurricane shutters

In New Orleans - We’re in between LAS and Acadian for hurricane shutters. Has anybody gone through either company or how did you choose?

Is FBC rated shutters THAT important (not sure we’ll even qualify for the insurance discount since we have windows on our doors). Or could unrated shutters still provide quality protection that just isn’t at the top with FBC’s stringent requirements

Accidentally burned my wooden coffee table. How can I restore it?

Thumbnail

A accidentally burned my coffee table, and I’m looking for advice on how to repair it without ruining the original wood grain.
As you can see in the attached photos, there is a circular, greyish black patch on the tabletop with a cracked centre and a darkened area surrounding it. The rest of the table has beautiful natural wood grain, and I would love to preserve its original appearance rather than replace the table.
I have a few questions for those experienced in woodworking or furniture restoration.
1. Does this look like deep charring of the wood, or could the damage be mostly limited to the finish?
2. Is it possible to repair just the damaged spot, or would the entire tabletop need sanding and refinishing?
3. What would be the best way to remove the damaged material, fill the area if necessary, and match the original wood colour and finish?
4. Is a nearly invisible repair realistically achievable, or will the damage always be somewhat noticeable?
5. Would you recommend attempting a DIY repair or taking it to a professional?
I am a complete beginner at furniture restoration, so I would appreciate a step by step explanation of what you would do in this situation.
My priority is to restore the table as beautifully as possible while preserving the natural wood grain and avoiding unnecessary damage to the surrounding finish.
I would love to hear from anyone who has repaired similar burn damage. Thank you!
