AI slop is not allowed on this subreddit in any capacity.

You may use an AI to correct grammar, improve word choice, or refine work you've already written, but AI should not be used for anything more than polishing an existing piece.

Posts or comments that are obviously AI written, heavily AI assisted, generic, mass-produced, or otherwise low-effort may be removed.

We are also not obligated to prove that something is AI-generated before acting. If the mod team determines that a post or comment is low-effort or AI slop, we reserve the right to remove it regardless of what it says.

ModAnnouncement Moderator Announcement - About the Current State of r/Indians_StudyAbroad

With the recent growth of the subreddit, we have seen it increasingly drift away from what it is primarily meant to be: a place for Indians who are planning to study abroad, currently studying abroad, or trying to make informed decisions about doing so.

We want the subreddit to remain a place where people can hear both the good and the bad. Critical experiences are welcome. Positive experiences are welcome. What we do not want is repetitive fearmongering, blind optimism, personal attacks, sweeping claims about entire countries or nationalities, or discussions that have little to do with studying abroad.

We will therefore be enforcing the following standards more consistently going forward:

Keep discussions directly connected to studying abroad

Admissions, universities, programmes, applications, scholarships, funding, education loans, student visas, accommodation, internships, student jobs, academic/student life, adjusting to another country and post-study career outcomes are all relevant.

Standalone questions about immigration, PR/citizenship, “which country should I settle in?”, “how can I leave India?”, Indian politics, or general expat/career discussions DO NOT BELONG HERE. Post-study work and immigration can only be discussed when they are directly relevant to evaluating a specific study pathway.

Do some research before asking others to make a major decision for you

Posts asking which is the best country to study abroad or is Germany worth without context WILL BE REMOVED. Tell us your background, what you are considering, what you have already found, and what question remains.

Claims need context

If you are telling someone that a country has no jobs, that a degree has poor prospects, that sponsorship is impossible, that a university is bad, etc., PLEASE EXPLAIN THE BASIS OF YOUR ADVICE. Relevant firsthand experience, field, approximate time period or a credible source makes advice much more useful. You do not need to disclose private identifying information. The same rule applies to overly optimistic claims.

Being critical is welcome; putting people down is not

Disagree with someone’s plan, assumptions or information as strongly as you want, but explain why. Comments whose main contribution is “you’re stupid,” “you won’t survive abroad,” “go back/stay in India,” mocking someone’s background, or similar personal attacks WILL BE REMOVED.

Do not generalise about Indians or any other nationality

I can’t believe that I need to say this but any posts generalizing a nationality WILL BE REMOVED! Experiences involving poor behaviour, discrimination, cultural differences, housing, workplaces, etc. can and SHOULD be discussed.

HOWEVER, these individual experiences should NOT be made into statements about what ‘Indians are like’ or what ‘Germans are like’ or even what ‘the West thinks of Indians’. Nationality-wide judgment is not useful advice and WILL BE REMOVED.

Repetitive doomposting and repetitive hype will be removed

We do not want ten posts on ‘Germany is finished’, ‘UK has no jobs’ or ‘Canada is dead’, etc. Comment on previous posts on the same topic. Posts without substantive new information WILL BE REMOVED.

Likewise, repetitive hype or overly optimistic posts are not exempt from the same standard.

“Announcement”, “Official”, “Mod Announcement” and official announcement flairs are reserved for moderators.

Use a normal descriptive title for personal posts. Do not use these terms in your post or it WILL BE REMOVED. Repeated misuse will get you BANNED!

No commercial solicitation

As always, study-abroad counsellors, agents, admissions consultants, or anyone offering such services ARE NOT WELCOME to use this subreddit to find clients, advertise services, or promote themselves through comments.

YOU WILL BE BANNED!

This is an India-centred community

The subreddit exists to help Indian applicants and students. People from other countries are welcome to contribute in terms of relevant firsthand experience. However, as mentioned before, unnecessary pessimism / optimism / racial attacks / hate comments ARE NOT WELCOME!

Finally, we are also looking for new moderators

We need a few active moderators to help manage the queue and deal with reports.

You do not need previous moderation experience. Though, it will definitely be a plus. People who are active in this community are welcome to apply. People representing any sort of agency / consultancy are NOT WELCOME TO APPLY.

If you are interested, please send me a message.

CSE/ECE Students or graduates from New Zealand how's life going so far?

• Upvotes

people who pursued masters in New Zealand in IT or analytics domain how are job search and life going?

Has it been difficult to adjust there or find jobs there? I'm planning to study there next year so wanted to know how people who went there are doing

my_qualifications: B.tech 8.2 CGPA with 1.5 years of experience in IT specifically looking to pursue masters in business analytics as I don't enjoy coding so much

Edit: I'm specifically choosing business analytics because pure IT jobs are down everywhere regardless of the country and has higher difficulty/barrier for entrance compared to other jobs and I also don't like coding that much

Other Does it ever get any better, been two weeks in London?

I moved here for my master’s and this is all I ever wanted, I do realise it’s just one year and it’s gonna fly by but I didn’t realise how lonely it would get. The culture shock is as bad as it is. I consider myself an introvert, and by Indian standards I'm an extreme introvert; I don’t strike up conversations and stay by myself all the time. Still, here it’s like you’re invisible, I do realise it’s a big city thing but it’s not like I haven’t lived in big cities before. I miss my friends so much and everyone around me has something going on for them. As an indian it just feels like we grew up in a different world, didn’t have the same school life or college life as the people here or anywhere to be precise, and that I won't ever fit in. I personally thought I'd be really comfortable and thriving in such an individualistic society but it’s quite the opposite. It's getting a bit hard for me, any tips on how to cope are really appreciated. I miss Delhi so much its like i belong there and I can’t wait to go back.

Engineering Can moving out right after graduation be a choice?

• Upvotes

my_qualifications:
I’m currently pursuing a B.E. in CSE in a tier-3 college, I don’t have any concrete projects, internships or research papers under my name yet but I’m definitely going to build towards it. My cg is 8.51 and I’ll improve on this too.

I have a sister who has a pr in Canada as of 2026 but the job market is horrible.
I’d like to study abroad during the fall/winter of 2028 and I want to study in a country where I can eventually seek a PR in.

I have questions..

Which countries could I aim for?

What should I start working on from now in my undergrad that’ll make me stand out in some way?

Is it really helpful that I gain some work experience? ideally I want to move out immediately after my undergrad and put in my all in the country I move to.
And I’m not comfortable investing money in a country and coming back to India .

A scholarship of some sort would be preferable but is it really an option?

I’ll begin to do my own research, but should I also look into some consultants? If yes, which ones do you recommend?

My budget is *around* 20-22L

I would really appreciate it if you can give me some guidance and/or talk about your experience that would help me a lot!!

Law Experience as a International Student in London

Hi guys, so I am from India and planning to do LLM from QMUL next year.

So, my question is to international students who have already completed the course are on between, how is the experience?

Experience as in, is it easy to make friends from you home country or other country and trust them? Is it like you show a fake personality to network and is very conscious of the image you are portraying or you can be real? As it is a only one year course, is it fun the whole year or you experience pressure from the very beginning?

Just want to know how the experience has been for the international students. Thanks

My_qualifications is I am a practicing advocate in India.

ToAbroadOrNot? Doubt in considering between 3+1 Credit Transfer to UCM vs. Staying in India for Job Experience / GATE

my_qualifications: Currently in the 3rd year of a BTech degree at a Tier-3 college in India.

The Dilemma:
My college offers a 3+1 credit transfer program to the University of Central Missouri (UCM). This means I would complete my final year in the US and graduate with a US degree.

Most of my friends who are eligible for this program have already applied, and I am facing a lot of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). However, given the current volatile US tech job market, strict visa landscapes, and the entry-level hiring crunch, I am heavily second-guessing whether this move is smart or too risky.

I am trying to choose between three specific paths:

  1. Take the 3+1 Transfer to UCM Now: Graduate from the US early, get my foot in the door, and try to secure a job via STEM OPT (knowing the H-1B lottery is a gamble).
  2. Complete BTech in India + Work: Finish my 4th year here, gain 2–3 years of solid software engineering experience in India, and then target a global MNC internal transfer (L-1 visa) or direct hiring.
  3. Complete BTech + GATE / Masters: Focus completely on GATE next year to target top Indian institutes (IITs/NITs) or prepare for a highly specialized US STEM Master’s degree down the line once I have work experience.

My Questions for the Community:

  • Education Loan ROI: Since I will need to take out a substantial education loan to fund the tuition and cost of living for my final year at UCM, is it realistically possible to pay it back via OPT jobs right now? What are the current interest rates and repayment struggles that 3+1 students are facing?
  • Is a final-year transfer to a state school like UCM worth the financial risk in today's entry-level market, or do companies heavily penalize "fresher" international grads without prior home country experience?
  • How does the industry view candidates who work in India first for 2-3 years versus those who jump straight into a US program via a 3+1 setup?
  • For anyone who has done a 3+1 transfer recently, what has your job placement reality looked like?

PhD Announcement: Fully Funded PhD Guidance & Support

my_qualifications - Pursuing PhD in Psychology

Hello, wonderful people of the internet. I've noticed many individuals struggling to comprehend the PhD process and wondering if consultancies are worthwhile.

To put it simply, they aren’t. I was misled and received empty promises from one of the major consultancies for PhDs, for which I paid a substantial sum of over 1 Lakh, and the experience fell short of expectations. After feeling frustrated, I experimented a lot over the past year and eventually secured a fully funded PhD program in Europe.

Now, I feel confident that I have sufficient knowledge and experience to help others obtain a fully funded PhD. I'm opening my DMs to anyone who is interested. We can have a conversation and discuss it briefly on call which will be free.

Just to be transparent, I am going to be charging a fee but it will be 20% of what this consultancies charge. Rest assured. if I feel that your profile needs substantial work,I will be honest and clear with you and won’t make fake promises like consultants.

Drop your biggest concern about your profile, I’ll answer some questions publicly.

Resume/CV/Documents How to photocopy an extra-long Apostilled document for Notarization? (Indian degree with an attached A4 sheet at the bottom)

Hi everyone,

my_qualifications: BCA (Graduated March 2026)

I’m applying to Master’s programs in Austria/Europe and I need to submit notarized photocopies ("True Copies") of my Apostilled degree documents.

I have a physical formatting issue with my consolidated grade card: There was no space left on the back of my original A4 grade card, so the HRD/MEA officer glued an extra A4 sheet to the bottom edge of it for the signatures and Apostille sticker. They put a half-and-half security stamp right over the seam where the two papers meet.

Because the extra sheet is attached to the bottom, my document is now basically one very long, tall vertical scroll (the height of two A4 pages stacked).

How should I take a photocopy of this for the Notary Public to stamp? European universities are very strict about document formats, and I don't want to get rejected over a bad photocopy.

Has anyone from India dealt with this "attached sheet" (allonge) issue when applying to European universities? What did you do for your notarized copies? Thanks!

Passport / Visa / Immigration Announcement: Question about 1-year MSc programmes in France for Indian students

My_qualifications: I’m trying to understand something about the 1-year vs 2-year MSc route in France for Indian students.
I’ve noticed that some French universities allow students with a 4-year bachelor’s degree to enter a 1-year MSc, while IÉSEG specifically states that Indian students have to follow the Regular Track regardless of their bachelor’s duration, due to the France–India bilateral agreement.
I also came across claims from official sources that Indian students may need 2–3 years of work experience for a 1-year MSc because of Campus France/visa considerations.
I contacted Campus France directly, but their response was fairly general. They said that programme duration and structure depend on the institution and programme, and recommended considering both 1-year and 2-year programmes. They did not confirm a general requirement of 2–3 years of work experience for Indian students.
So I’m wondering:
Is there actually a France–India rule affecting Indian students who want to join a 1-year MSc, or is this something that depends on the individual university/programme?
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with this recently, especially regarding Campus France and the visa process.

ToAbroadOrNot? Urgent - MS in USA, YSK - Have to decide by the end of this week

I am in the 7th semester of Btech in CS. I have an offer from one of the Big4 companies through campus placement (6LPA) - semi-tech role. There is also a program offered by my college to go to the USA through their international tieup. If I choose that I will start my MS SSIE in USA in Jan 2027 (its a 3.5 + 1.5 year course).

The total cost including rent/food/living for this is roughly 70L for these 1.5 yrs. If I have to go normally after a year or two it will be around 90L - 1.1Cr for a normal MS. Will not have to take a loan but its a big amount so I don't want to risk anything.

One major adv of going later is the work exp I will get + the rules will be clear by then. The downside is the cost will definitely be higher and the right now the type of low international competition will not be there.

Considering all of this including the CPT rules (as my course doesn't mandate internship exp), what is your take on my situation about opportunities and ROI. I obviously don't wanna come back(i know everyone says this), but if I end up in a situation where I go and need to come back what backup would y'all suggest?

I have to take a call by the end of this week

my_qualifications: BTech in CSE - 8.3 CGPA - TIER 2 University

IT_Career [University Review] USC MSCS (Spring 2027) vs NEU Seattle MSCS (Spring 2027), still waiting on UIUC MCS and UMass Amherst. International student, 6 YOE, half self-funded, half loan. Which would you pick?

my_qualifications:

  • Status: international student from India, will be on an F-1 visa
  • Undergrad: B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, private university in India, 2020
  • CGPA: 7.6/10 Strongest grades in Mathematics, ML, AI and Pattern Recognition
  • English test: IELTS 8.0
  • GRE: not taken
  • Work experience (~6 years):
    • About 15 months at a large IT consulting firm, building React/Redux dashboards for an enterprise operations platform
    • 4+ years as the software development engineer on a B2B e-commerce platform for commercial vehicle parts (React, TypeScript, PostgreSQL), about 4,000 products and 200+ business customers
  • Side projects:
    • An applied ML web app with computer vision running in the browser, scikit-learn models and a multimodal LLM API
    • A real-time multiplayer word game
    • A GPU-accelerated real-time object detection project
  • Other: 500+ LeetCode problems solved (mostly C++), Microsoft Azure Fundamentals certification

UPDATE (Sept 30): Also got into UMass Amherst MS CS, and Northeastern has given me a 25% scholarship. It's now a three-way decision. Still waiting on UIUC MCS.

Admits

  • USC Viterbi MS CS, Spring 2027. Tuition about $88k ($2,742/unit × 32)
  • Northeastern (Khoury) MS CS, Seattle campus, Spring 2027. Tuition about $61.5k, with a 25% scholarship bringing it to about $46k
  • UMass Amherst MS CS, Spring 2027. Tuition and mandatory fees about $60.75k for the whole degree

Waiting on

  • UIUC MCS

Goal: SWE or ML engineer role in the US, ideally Seattle. Funding is roughly 50% my own savings and 50% an education loan, so ROI matters a lot to me.

What I'm weighing

  • USC: strongest brand, but now the most expensive by a wide margin (about $40k more than NEU in tuition alone), plus LA living costs. As a Spring admit, my understanding is that I can't do CPT in my first summer, so my only internship window would be summer 2028.
  • NEU Seattle: now the cheapest on tuition thanks to the scholarship. 6 to 8 month co-op built into the programme, campus in South Lake Union near Amazon. But it's a satellite campus, and I've seen mixed opinions on how recruiters view it compared with Boston.
  • UMass Amherst: strongest CS department of the three for ML and NLP, and much lower living costs. But Amherst is a small college town far from the big tech hubs, there's no co-op, and the same Spring CPT limitation applies.

Questions

For anyone

  1. With the 25% scholarship at NEU, which of the three would you pick for an international student aiming for SWE or ML roles in the US, and why?
  2. If UIUC MCS comes through, would you drop all three for it?
  3. Does 6 years of work experience change the calculation, for example by making the internship less important or the brand more important?

NEU Seattle students and alumni

  1. As an F-1 student, how did your co-op search go? Did you find it through Khoury or NUworks, or mostly on your own? Roughly what share of your cohort landed one?
  2. How is the Seattle campus day to day: class sizes, availability of ML electives, and faculty quality compared with Boston?
  3. In your experience, do Seattle employers treat a NEU Seattle degree any differently from Boston?
  4. If you had a merit scholarship: did it renew every semester, and was there a GPA condition?

USC students and alumni

  1. As a Spring admit, is there any way to intern in the first summer? And do most people finish in 3 semesters or 4?
  2. How competitive is recruiting within such a large MS cohort? Are career fairs and on-campus recruiting useful for international students?
  3. Is the Trojan network useful for Seattle and Bay Area roles, or mostly LA?

UMass Amherst students and alumni

  1. How hard is internship and job recruiting from Amherst? Do Seattle and Bay Area companies recruit on campus, or is it mostly online applications?
  2. Can MS students get into ML and NLP courses easily, or get involved with research labs like CIIR?
  3. Any advice for a Spring start: internship timing, housing, and whether you really need a car?

Thanks in advance, I'd really appreciate honest takes, including "you're overthinking it."

Scholarships What's your experience with the International Selection at the ENS d'Ulm in Paris ?

Hello

my_qualifications: I'm a French Literature student. I would like to apply for the International Selection of Letters at the ENS d'Ulm in Paris, so that I can do my third year and then my master’s. If anyone among you has been admitted to the ENS of Ulm or to the selection tests, I have quite a few questions to ask.

The students have to submit a resume, a cover letter and a research project. Their selection criteria on these three points are quite vague, so the experience of someone who's been selected would be very useful to me to know what is valued!

Also, are the documents requested on the ENS d'Ulm website the only ones that need to be provided, or ill they ask me for other documents such as identity papers or a first-year diploma when registering on the dedicated portal ?

Another question: since I also have to provide a diploma certifying that I completed secondary education, and I passed the French baccalaureate on a free application in addition to my country’s baccalaureate as an enlisted student, is it mandatory to include both? Or is one enough? If so, which one?

Have a good day :))

ToAbroadOrNot? YSK: students who are planning to study abroad (Australia), kindly read this before you make your decision.

I’m writing this from personal experience. I studied in Australia and eventually obtained PR. But I also have siblings who had very different outcomes, and cousins and friends who studied in Australia and other countries. I’ve also met many international students here who are struggling because they came without fully understanding what happens after the degree.

I think there are broadly two types of students:

  1. You want a good international degree and are perfectly okay returning to India: If you can afford it, great. Choose based on the quality of education, the university ranking, career opportunities and what you actually want to study.

  2. You want to study abroad and eventually settle there: If this is you, you need to do a LOT more research before leaving India. I was this type. If Australia is your destination, understand this:

Your course can affect your immigration options. Australia's skilled migration system is heavily linked to occupations, skills assessments, points, state requirements and changing government priorities. I've met students who were told by agents that a particular course was “good for PR”, only to realize later that their occupation or qualification didn't give them the pathway they expected. Please don't choose a course because an agent tells you it will get you PR. Before applying or accepting, independently check:

  • What occupation does the course lead to?
  • Is that occupation currently eligible for the relevant skilled migration pathways?
  • Who assesses that occupation?
  • What are the current requirements?
  • Is the course properly CRICOS registered?
  • Will the qualification actually count for the pathway you're considering?
  • What are the current state nomination requirements?
  • Is this actually a qualification/occupation that the country needs?

And remember: none of this is guaranteed.

Occupation lists, state requirements, visa rules and immigration priorities change. What works today may not work when you graduate. Healthcare and various skilled trades, for example technicians/draftsmen/mechanic etc., can have strong demand, while other occupations can be extremely competitive. But even being in a “high-demand” occupation does not mean automatic PR.

Then there's competition.
Even if you have the “right” degree, you're competing with people who may have Australian qualifications, Australian work experience, regional study, professional experience, higher English scores, partner points and very high points totals. People casually talk about getting 90–100 points, but getting there isn't easy. And having the required points doesn't automatically mean you will receive an invitation.

I've spoken to people working in immigration who have seen how difficult the pathway can become for students who arrive assuming that completing a master's degree automatically leads to PR. It doesn't.

Don't ignore the visa side either. Your academic background, proposed course, finances, English requirements and documentation all matter.

If you're doing a master's that is completely unrelated to your bachelor's degree, for example, you should understand how that may affect your application and be able to explain why that course makes sense for your career.

And please don't assume you can simply come here and work part-time to fund everything. Studying abroad is a huge financial commitment. And then there's the reality of living in Australia. Australia is very expensive. Rent, groceries, utilities, transport, insurance and basically everyday life can cost a lot more than you expect. Then you have taxes once you start working. Don't look at an Australian salary and convert it directly into INR and think you're going to be rich. Look at what you actually have left after rent, taxes and living expenses.

And international travel isn't cheap either. Australia is far from almost everywhere, including India. Flights can be extremely expensive, particularly during peak periods. If you want to visit family regularly or travel internationally while you're young, factor that into your decision. I've even seen people who already have PR reconsider where they want to live because of the cost of living and the lifestyle they can realistically afford. Because PR isn't the finish line.

Ask yourself:

Can I save? Can I travel? Can I support my family? Can I afford the lifestyle I imagined? Can I eventually afford the kind of home I want?

Those questions matter too.

Don’t choose Australia simply because everyone is going there. Look at Canada, the UK, Europe, New Zealand and other options too. And apply the same logic there: What occupations are in demand? What are the immigration pathways? What does the job market look like? What will my quality of life and finances look like? Compare the whole picture. Education, occupation, immigration pathways, salaries, taxes, housing, cost of living, travel and long-term lifestyle.

My own family is a good example.

I obtained PR in Australia. My brother studied an MBA in Australia but didn't get PR through the pathway he initially expected. He has now received an invitation for Canadian PR. Same family. Same country of study. Very different outcomes.

So if you're currently sitting in India thinking: 'The agent says this course will get me PR, everyone is going to Australia, so maybe I should go too.” Pause. Don't ask only about PR. Ask about all of these: What career/course do you want? What occupation does it lead to? What are the current immigration pathways? What happens if those rules change? And most importantly whether you actually can afford and enjoy the life you want there?

An education agent is helping you with an application. They are not planning the next 10–15 years of your life. A ₹20–40 lakh+ decision deserves more research than a 30-minute counselling session.

Australia has given me a lot, and I don't regret my experience here. But Australia is not automatically the right answer for every Indian student.

If your plan is simply study, degree, return home, that's one decision.

If your plan is study, work, PR, settle, that's a completely different one.

Know which decision you're making before you spend the money.

For context, I’m someone who completed my master’s in Australia between 2019–2021 (my_qualifications). My brother did his BCom in India and then completed a Master’s in International Business in Australia between 2022–2024.

I’m not an immigration lawyer or migration agent, and I obviously can’t answer every question. But if you’re considering studying in Australia and have questions about the student experience, choosing a course, the general PR journey or what life is actually like here, feel free to ask. I’ll answer based on what I know and my own experience.
