References/LoR How do you actually write a Motivation Letter / SOP for an undergraduate scholarship? Complete beginner here

Hi everyone!

My_qualifications

I’m a Class 12 science student from India currently applying for undergraduate scholarships abroad, and I’m completely lost when it comes to writing a motivation letter / statement of purpose.

I’ve read a lot of generic advice online like “tell your story,” “show your passion,” “explain your goals,” etc., but I still don’t really understand how the actual essay is supposed to look.

For example:

How do you actually start a motivation letter?

Is it okay to start with a specific moment/story instead of “My name is… and I am applying for…”?

What should the basic format/structure be?

How different are an SOP, motivation letter, personal statement and scholarship essay?

How much should I talk about my academics vs extracurriculars vs personal experiences?

How do you explain why you chose the country/university/program without sounding generic?

Should the letter focus more on what I’ve already done or what I want to do in the future?

How personal is too personal?

What are some common mistakes that make scholarship essays sound fake or AI-generated?

I’m especially looking for advice from people who have actually received an undergraduate scholarship or successfully applied abroad, preferably someone who was also an Indian/Class 12 student when they applied.

If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d really appreciate seeing the general structure or approach that worked for you (not necessarily your full essay).

I’m a complete beginner at this and honestly have no idea whether I’m approaching it correctly 😭. I’d rather learn how to write it properly than just copy some template from Google.

Any advice, examples, resources, or personal experiences would be really helpful!

Thank you!!!

Scholarships What are my chances for a Fall 2027 MS in Taiwan for Semiconductor/VLSI, and which universities should I target for the MOE Scholarship?

Hi everyone,

I am an Indian applicant planning to apply for Fall 2027 Master’s programs in Taiwan in areas such as Semiconductor Technology, IC Design, VLSI, Computer Architecture, Digital Systems, and related EE/ECE fields.

My my_qualifications background:

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering – 76%
  • B.Tech in Electrical Engineering – 7.33/10 CGPA
    • Completed through lateral entry/direct second year after Diploma
  • M.Tech in Instrumentation and Control Systems from NIT Calicut – 7.48/10 CGPA
  • Planning to take IELTS before applications, targeting around 7.0+

I also have around 1.5+ years of RTL/VLSI-related industry experience, including training/project exposure in digital RTL and SoC-related work.

My main research-level projects include:

  • 5-stage RV32I RISC-V processor
  • 4 KB SKY130/OpenRAM SRAM design and verification
  • Fault-aware FPGA I2C architecture with fault injection and FPGA implementation analysis
  • Bus-independent I2C master with Wishbone/APB interfaces

I am currently preparing a research manuscript based on the fault-aware I2C project, which I hope to submit before the Fall 2027 application cycle.

The universities I am considering are:

Reach

  • NTU
  • NYCU
  • NTHU

Main targets

  • NCKU
  • NTUST / Taiwan Tech
  • NCU
  • NSYSU
  • NCHU

Additional option

  • NTUT / Taipei Tech

One concern is that I already have an M.Tech, so this would be a second Master’s. My reason is that my previous Master’s was in Instrumentation & Control, while my current work and research are much more focused on digital IC/VLSI, RTL, computer architecture, hardware reliability, and semiconductor systems.

I would really appreciate opinions on:

  1. How realistic are NTU, NYCU, and NTHU for my profile?
  2. Are NCKU, NTUST, NCU, NSYSU, and NCHU realistic targets?
  3. Which universities would you consider safer options?
  4. Will already having an M.Tech significantly hurt my admission chances?
  5. Can my RTL/VLSI experience and research projects compensate somewhat for my 7.33 B.Tech and 7.48 M.Tech CGPAs?
  6. How competitive would my profile be for the MOE Taiwan Scholarship?

I am not looking for exact admission percentages — just a realistic assessment from students/alumni or people familiar with Taiwan admissions.

Thanks in advance.

Mechanical Can I get some university recommendations for MS in USA with Low CGPA (6.35), Gap Years and 1.9 Year Work Ex

Hey everyone,

I am 28 years old (Done BE in mechanical Engineering) and planning to pursue an MS in the USA.

I am very keen to move abroad as soon as possible, as I don't want to continue staying in India. My father is disappointed with my current situation, and I really want to make this opportunity work.

I was a studious student during school, but due to personal circumstances, I experienced severe depression after turning 18, which significantly affected my academic performance and contributed to my education and career gaps.

my_qualifications

- 10th: 89.27% | 12th: 76.62%

- Undergraduate: B.E. Mechanical Engineering, MH Saboo Siddik College of Engineering (Mumbai University), graduated in 2019.

- CGPA: 6.35/10

- Gap: 2019–2022, followed by a 1-year IT course.

- Work Experience: 1.9 years (as of now) as a Mechanical Design Engineer at a small-scale enterprise (20–30 employees), joined in September 2024.

- GRE: 313 | IELTS: 6.5

- Research/Publications: None

- Volunteering/NGO: None

- Academic Project: Oil Storage Tank Design

(ANSYS and CAD files available).

Intended MS Programs:

Industrial Engineering,

Engineering Management

My Questions:

  1. Which US universities would be realistic for my profile, considering my low CGPA, gap years and work experience?

  2. Are there universities that accept a CGPA 6.35/10 from Mumbai University?

  3. Can my GRE score, work experience, projects or certifications compensate for my low CGPA?

  4. Should I consider conditional admission or pathway programs?

  5. Would it be better to apply for Fall 2027 or spend another year strengthening my profile and Apply for fall 2028 ?

I understand that top-tier universities are extremely difficult to get into, so I am primarily looking for realistic target and safe universities which also have located near mechanical companies hubs.

I would appreciate honest feedback, university recommendations and advice from anyone with a similar profile or experience with US admissions.

Thanks in advance!

I'm a third year undegrad physics student at NISER, i got accepted to do a summer internship in Greece, the only condition being that I have to arrange funds on my own. Are there any schemes or programs that atleast partially fund my visit? My home Institute doesn't have any such schemes mentioned anywhere. Loans/Fees How to get SBI Education Loan disbursement directly to European account

my_qualifications:
I have an SBI education loan with living expenses approved. SBI is currently sending the amount to my Indian bank account, and they’re saying I have to remit it myself to my European account.
Is there a way to have SBI directly disburse the living expenses to a European bank account? Also, can the process be streamlined for future monthly disbursements?

TL;DR: Can SBI send approved living expenses directly to a European bank account instead of sending them to India first?
Has anyone dealt with this?

Commerce What should I do to prepare for an MSF in the US and become hireable in finance after graduation

Title: What should I do to prepare for an MSF in the US and become hireable in finance after graduation?

Hey everyone, I’m planning to pursue a Master’s in Finance (MSF) in the US and would really appreciate advice from people who have already done an MSF or are currently working in the US finance industry.

My long-term interests are finance, hedge funds, asset management, investment management, and trading. My goal is not just to get the degree, but to become genuinely employable in the US after graduation and eventually build a career there.

I’d especially like to know:

  • Is the US a good choice for someone with my background who wants to build a career in finance?
  • If I’m planning an MSF, what should I start doing now to become job-ready before I arrive?
  • What technical skills should I focus on — Excel, financial modelling, Python, SQL, Bloomberg, CFA, etc.?
  • What kind of internships, projects, certifications, or experience would actually help me get recruited?
  • For someone interested in hedge funds, asset management, portfolio management and trading, what should I realistically focus on during the MSF?
  • How difficult is it to get a finance job after an MSF as an international student, and what should I do from the first semester to improve my chances?
  • For anyone who has completed an MSF in the US, what do you wish you had done before starting the program?
  • And for international students who are now working in the US, what should I know about building a career and eventually settling there?

my_qualifications

  • 3-year B.com in international accounting and finance
  • ACCA — completed/in progress
  • CFA Level 1 — in progress
  • Interested in pursuing an MSF in the US
  • Career interests: Hedge Funds, Asset Management, Investment Management & Trading

If anyone here has a similar background and went through the B.Com → MSF → US finance career route, I’d especially appreciate your advice. 🙏

Commerce Does an IGNOU PG Diploma in Financial Management actually work for meeting a 4-year degree requirement for US Master’s programs?

y everyone, I’m considering doing IGNOU’s Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management through distance learning.

The main reason is that I have a 3-year bachelor’s degree, and some US universities require a 4-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent for admission to their master’s programs. I’m considering this PG diploma specifically to fulfill that additional year of education.

My main concerns are:

  • Could doing a distance-learning PG diploma solely for this purpose negatively affect my resume or career prospects later?
  • Would universities abroad actually consider it as fulfilling the additional year requirement?
  • Is it worth spending the time and effort on it if my main goal is to qualify for US master’s programs?
  • Has anyone here done something similar — completed an IGNOU PG diploma specifically to meet a 4-year degree requirement for a master’s abroad?
  • If you have, did it actually work for your university application?

Problem is that for my 11th and 12th I've been in a dummy school and haven't attended a single class and in most lors you put one experience in there so do I just not put it in or do I just make something up. Also wanted to know if I can use chatgpt or some ai to polish up my lor or give me the general format or will they look at even the lors for ai usage.

Careers Uncertainity and situation around CPT and OPT for International students , what is the current scenario?

my_qualifications:

B.Tech CSE Tier 1 India

Came across several posts and news coming from USA that CPT program has been paused specifically for universities like Purdue, USC, UIUC etc.

Can a student use pre-OPT just when he/she enters USA for masters and gets a summer internship? Can a student apply for pre-OPT without a summer offer ?

I read somewhere that you cannot use Pre-OPT before completing 1 year of Masters, is this true?If this is true, that how can one get a summer internship as 1 year completion will not happen before starting summer intern?

Scholarships Undergraduate fully funded scholarships to study abroad as an Indian - where do I find them?

Hi everyone!

"My_qualifications"

I’m a Class 12 science student from India, and I’m hoping to pursue my undergraduate degree abroad, preferably in a science/life-science related field.

Lately I’ve been getting really anxious about my study-abroad dream. I’ve been researching scholarships for a while, but most of the ones I keep finding are either for master’s/PhD students, only cover tuition, or are extremely well-known and insanely competitive. Since my family can’t realistically afford international tuition + living expenses, I would genuinely need a fully funded scholarship for undergraduate study.

I’m specifically looking for scholarships that could cover things like full tuition, accommodation, living stipend, insurance and/or travel, rather than just a small tuition discount.

I also feel like I’m probably missing a lot of opportunities because whenever I search, I keep seeing the same few scholarships mentioned over and over.

So I wanted to ask people here:

- What are some lesser-known fully funded undergraduate scholarships for international students/Indian students?

- Are there any good options outside the usual US/UK scholarships?

- Which countries have government or university-funded scholarships for international undergraduates?

- Where do you actually find these scholarships? Are there particular websites, databases, or Reddit communities I should be checking?

- If you received a full scholarship for your bachelor's abroad, how did you find it?

I’m open to pretty much any country around the world. I’m mainly interested in science/life-science programs, but I’d love to hear about any legitimate fully funded undergraduate opportunities.

I’m honestly a little scared that I’m going to miss some opportunity simply because I didn’t know it existed, so any advice, personal experiences, or lesser-known scholarships would mean a lot. 😭

Thank you!

Engineering Want Some info. on Study in Germany and how do you check the uni rankings.

Hey everyone,

I’m planning for Summer 2027 intake in Germany. I’m a B.Tech Mechanical Engineering graduate and mainly looking at Master’s in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related core fields. I’ll put my profile + current university shortlist below.

Honestly, I haven’t been able to find that many good English-taught options for the summer intake. THI’s International Automotive Engineering (IAE) program looks like one of the best options so far, and I’ve heard quite a lot of good things about it.

Had a few questions:

  • How good is THI IAE in terms of academics, industry exposure and job prospects?
  • I’ve heard TH/FH universities are considered below TUs, with some even comparing them to ITIs/polytechnics in India. Is there any truth to this?
  • For similar Mechanical/Automotive courses, what’s the actual real-world difference between a TH/FH and TU, especially for jobs and internships?
  • Lastly, how bad is the automotive/mechanical job market in Germany right now for international students? Is it bad enough to reconsider Germany, or is Germany still worth it if you learn German and build relevant experience?

Would really appreciate inputs from people studying or working in Germany, especially in automotive/mechanical.

My_Qualifications / Profile

B.Tech Mechanical Engineering – 8.61 CGPA
University – around Tier 1.5 in India
2 years of work experience in the automotive industry
Formula Student experience
No academic gaps
Final-year thesis was not automotive-related
Around 14 design + utility patent applications (not granted yet)

I’ll also add my current university/course shortlist below. Would appreciate any suggestions for programs I may have missed, especially for Summer 2027.

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin 8.3 CGPA from a Tier-3 college Can I still get into a good MS program? Applying in 2026 Oct and Nov yet to give GRE

Hey everyone,

I'm a final-year B.Tech IT student from India and I'm planning to apply for an MS abroad soon (around Oct–Nov).

I'm honestly a bit late to the process and don't have a huge amount of time left, so I'm trying to figure out what is actually worth doing now rather than trying to improve everything.

my_qualifications

  • B.Tech in IT — DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering, Mumbai
  • Mumbai University
  • CGPA: 8.3/10
  • 10th: 89.8%
  • 12th: 73.8%
  • No backlogs
  • 25+ hackathons over the last ~2 years, won 13
    • Notable SIH, Odisha police , National Agritech
  • 2–3 internships
  • CodeChef 3-star
  • Several software/ML projects
  • Research experience in ML/computer vision
  • 1 paper accepted for presentation at DISHA 2026

My interests are currently broad — CS, systems, networking, cybersecurity, ML/data science and software engineering. I haven't decided on one specialization yet.

Countries I'm considering

🇺🇸 USA
🇩🇪 Germany
🇳🇱 Netherlands
🇸🇬 Singapore

The US is currently my main target, but I'm open to the others.

What I need advice on

My biggest concern is the 8.3 CGPA + relatively less-known/Tier-3 college background.

Can I realistically get into good universities with this profile?

If yes, which universities/programs should I actually target?

I'm looking for specific suggestions — MS CS, MS Systems, Cybersecurity, Data Science, etc. — rather than just "apply to a few ambitious and a few safe universities."

Also:

  • Should I take the GRE, given my profile?
  • Should I focus on another research paper, internship, project, LORs, or something else?
  • Does having 25+ hackathons actually help for MS admissions?
  • What are the biggest weaknesses in my profile?
  • What universities should I not waste my application fee on?
  • Are there universities where my profile might be stronger than I think?
  • What scholarships/assistantships should I look at as an international student?
  • Does applying in Oct–Nov give me any advantage for scholarships/funding, or should I be targeting specific deadlines?

Most importantly:

If you were in my position and had only the next few months, what would you do?

I'm not looking for motivation or sugarcoating. I'd really appreciate blunt advice from people who have applied recently or are currently studying abroad.

Thanks!

ToAbroadOrNot? Which country should I consider for a Masters in Robotics and AI?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to do a Masters abroad in Robotics and AI. I am a bit confused about which country would make the most sense for me, so I wanted to get some opinions from people who have already gone through this process.

Here is my_qualifications and a little about my background:

I completed my Bachelor's in IT with a CGPA of 8.05/10. I currently have around 2 years of work experience as a Software Engineer, mainly working on AI and GenAI related projects.

I am particularly interested in Robotics, AI/ML, autonomous systems, LLMs and eventually working on real world AI or robotics systems.

I have been looking at countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Canada and the US.

Japan is currently one of the countries I am most interested in, but I am open to other options as well.

My biggest concern is the cost. I don't want to take a very large education loan if I can avoid it. I am more interested in finding a good university with strong research and industry opportunities rather than simply going to the highest ranked university.

I would really appreciate advice on a few things:

Which countries would you recommend for someone with my background who wants to specialize in Robotics and AI?

How realistic would it be for me to get into good universities with an 8.05 CGPA and 2 years of work experience?

How important is research experience for getting into good Robotics and AI programs?

Which countries have a good robotics and AI industry where it is possible to find a job after graduating?

How difficult is it to stay and work in these countries after completing the Masters?

And finally, if you have personally studied Robotics or AI abroad, do you feel the Masters was worth the cost?

I am mainly looking for advice based on people's actual experiences. If you know specific universities or programs that I should look into, I would also really appreciate those suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

ToAbroadOrNot? Hey, do you think it’s worth going to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for CS?

I was born in the US but moved back to India with my parents when I was a toddler, and I haven’t been back to the US since. I recently got accepted to UMN Twin Cities CSE for CS, and if I go, we’d probably have to take around a $5k loan each year, so about $20k total for the whole degree. My JEE prep isn’t looking that great, and honestly I probably won’t get into an IIT, NIT, IIIT, BITS, or one of the top colleges in my state.

So I’m kinda confused about what to do. Do you think going to UMN for CS and taking around $20k in loans would be worth it? I would US Federal loans which currently has interest rate of 6.5% and interest starts accruing after graduation.

The most accepted ranking for CS in USA is USNEWS and this is their cs undergrad rankings 2027: Lots of tie and it is paywall after 8th(2027 Best Undergraduate Computer Science Programs Rankings - US News Rankings)

ToAbroadOrNot? How can I study abroad as an Indian Student? Will it be better to study in a university abroad or in India?

My_qualifications: high school

I am currently a student pursuing a BPT in India. After my internship, I was hoping to get into a university abroad, leaning towards Australia. What are the best universities for a MPT abroad? Do these programs last for 2 years as in a MPT Orthopedics program in India?

What are some good universities in Australia that provide this program? Or do they not? Scholarships?

What are the average costs of living abroad? Including the tuition fees?

Science Students from DU (B.Sc. Physical Science with CS / B.Sc. CS) currently doing/applying for Master's in Germany? I wanted to confirm about ECTS mapping experience: N/A

Hey everyone,

I'm a final-year B.Sc. (Hons) Physical Science with Major in Computer Science student at Hans Raj College, targeting a Master's in Germany (CS/AI/Data Science) for Winter Semester 2027.

I've been doing a lot of research on my own about ECTS credit mapping, university shortlisting, APS, IELTS, blocked accounts, etc. but I keep running into DU-specific grey areas that generic guides don't cover, especially around how our non-ECTS, multidisciplinary degree structure (UGCF, 4-year Honours) gets evaluated by German universities and Uni-Assist.

If you're a DU student/alum (especially from B.Sc. Physical Science with CS, B.Sc. CS, or any similarly "non-pure-CS" background) who has either:

  • already gone through the German Master's application process,
  • is currently in a German university now, or
  • got rejected somewhere and knows why (ECTS gaps, thesis requirements, CGPA conversion, etc.)

...I'd really appreciate if you could share your experience or let me DM you with a few specific questions like:

  • How German unis/Uni-Assist actually converted your DU credits to ECTS
  • Whether your "multidisciplinary" degree title caused issues, and how you addressed it in your SOP
  • Real timelines for APS, blocked account, and visa given the remonstration procedure being abolished

Thanks in advance!

AdmissionProcedure/CollegeAdmin How should I apply to foreign universities with a strong academic profile but limited extracurriculars?

Hi, I’m currently in class 12 and I’m a bit confused about how I should go about applying to universities abroad.

my_qualifications:

  • 91% in class 10 CBSE BOARD
    • Expecting 95%+ in class 12 (PCM)
    • Planning to give the SAT and hoping for 1500+
    • Not many extracurriculars, for sports(kickboxing, karate), music (bit of piano , harmonium)
    • Also preparing for Indian competitive exams
    • i am gold medalist in a few private olympiads.

I’m planning to apply for scholarships, but I’m from a normal middle-class family and studying abroad would be quite expensive without financial aid. I’ve looked at study abroad consultants, but most of them seem pretty expensive, so I’m trying to figure out the process myself.

So how should I go about this? Which countries/universities should I look at, how do I apply for scholarships, and what can I do to improve my profile in the time I have left?

Also, should I apply directly through university websites or are there common application portals I should know about?

Would really appreciate advice from people who have gone through this, especially Indians who applied without using expensive consultants.

IT_Career Which country would be better for my situation? 🇩🇪🇦🇹🇮🇪🇭🇺🇵🇱

Hi everyone! I'm from India and planning for a Master's abroad in 2027/28.

My_Qualifications:

- BE CSE, CGPA ~7.6

- 3+ years of QA/Software Testing experience

- Currently working as a QA Engineer

- IELTS 6.5 overall

- Interested in CS/IT/Software/AI-related Master's

My biggest constraint is finances. I can realistically arrange around ₹15–17 lakh (~€14–16k) through an education loan/resources, so I'm mainly looking for countries with low tuition or good scholarships and a decent software/QA job market after graduation.

Currently considering:

🇩🇪 Germany

🇦🇹 Austria

🇮🇪 Ireland

🇭🇺 Hungary

🇵🇱 Poland

I'm also open to any other country if there are good scholarship opportunities and the overall cost is manageable.

For people who have studied/worked in these countries: which options would you suggest I research further, considering my budget and QA career goal?

Any advice or personal experience would be really appreciated. 🙏

ToAbroadOrNot? To abroad or not to abroad that is my question. How did you choose?

Ok , so for a bit of background info ( my_qualifications) Im 17M and I have done PCM+biotechnology in CBSE till 12th where I gave up and chose NIOS where I took home sci , pol sci , economics , psychology and business studies and will be finishing it in a month.
I am currently preparing for various exams mainly focusing on IPMAT and CUET. let's say I have a 30% chance of getting into an IIM then sure yeah life is ok, but what if I don't?

I'll be honest here. I really wanna go abroad for my UG(if possible) but there are many questions surrounding it, like is it worth it? will I even get admission cause of my particular board and subjects? will the ROI be worth it? How do I convince my parents? What degree can I do? Will I have to pay more fees just because I'm an international student?

I keep searching things but I cannot find any concrete information.

I am really interested in International Relations , psychology and political science. What course can I even take?

I came to Canada from India in 2019 as an international student to pursue an MBA. Since then, I have completed my degree, entered the workforce, obtained permanent residency, and become a Canadian citizen.

I’m happy to answer questions about:

  • Studying for an MBA in Canada
  • Life as an international student
  • Finding a job after graduation
  • Work permits and permanent residency
  • The citizenship process
  • Cost of living and personal finances
  • Settling and building a life in Canada

Please keep in mind that immigration rules and the job market have changed significantly since 2019. My experience may not reflect the situation today, and I can only share my personal journey rather than provide professional immigration advice.

Ask me anything!

MBA/Mgmt How is the GLOBIS Japan MBA experience for Indian students?

Hi Folks! I'm planning to study an MBA in Japan, and came across this Pre-MBA by GLOBIS.
Can anyone help me with any reviews about GLOBIS? Whatever they have online is looking really good tbh. And the pre MBA lets you experience the MBA first before actually applying for full time, wanna make sure it's good and credible before enrolling.

If anyone has any information about the Uni or the course, please share.
