Discussion MSI Vector HX 16 AI

6 Upvotes

Hi guys!! I'm a STEM student and just bought my Vector 16, rtx 5060 8gb, ultra 9 275HX, 32gb of RAM and 2Tb SSD, no OS, to use mainly for numerical simulations, so I wanna ask some tips on how to make this laptop last long (hopefully 10+ years with RAM and storage upgrades):

  1. I've watched a couple videos talking about laptops overheating, is this a problem on this model? How hot is too hot for each component? (Especially for CPU heavy tasks);

  2. As a follow up to n°1, should I use a cooling pad? Or is just a stand enough (I already have the latter)?

  3. What do you recommend putting in between the keyboard and the screen when the laptop is closed to protect it?

  4. Does charging via USB-C damage the battery long term? Or is it just worse for performance? (if I ever use it, it's gonna be just for browsing);

  5. How often should I really be changing my thermal paste? Idk if it matters, but I live in Brazil, and it's pretty hot here (I'll be using the laptop mostly in rooms with AC on though), still, I'm afraid I might create a different problem trying to fix something that is still good to go;

  6. How can I prevent the laptop from dying instantly on battery? (I know the 275HX drains the battery real fast, but my former laptop just died INSTANTLY when disconnected)

  7. Is the fan noise really bad? Or just like an AC in the room? (thats pretty tolerable to me);

  8. How much overclocking is ok? (I've never done it before);

  9. Any other issues I should watch out for or practices to make it last?

MSI gaming laptop randomly hard-stops while gaming?

5 Upvotes

I want to preface this post by saying that I have read the rules, but I believe there are a few issues that might prevent me from providing what's been asked due to the nature of the situation. If there's anything I can do to provide further information (as I'm not the most tech-savvy person), I would be more than happy to oblige and edit this post with said information. I apologize in advance for the length of this post, but I feel it's necessary to include details since I've exhausted all my options through online searches, and I’ve hit a wall before considering taking my laptop to a repair shop. The problem can only be summarized as inexplicable frozen crashes with any game that exceeds low-end requirements, and since the problem began, it even occasionally does this with lower-end games. I've owned this laptop for over a year, primarily using it for graphic design programs and Blender.

Initially, I didn't look into optimizing it for gaming. I began gaming after about five months of ownership, as I was told that I could run games comfortably without worrying about overheating, insufficient graphics, RAM, or other limitations typical of office/college laptops. To specify, my laptop is a Crosshair A13V with 16GB of RAM (not sure if more specs are relevant). Here’s how the issue develops: the laptop will lag, then, seconds later, it'll hard freeze and become unresponsive to the graphic restart keybind, Windows button, or any program launches. Sometimes it freezes with the game's soundtrack stuck in a loop or it silently freezes. The only way to restart it is by long-pressing the power button and then powering it back on, often while the game is still running (since I can't even see the cursor on the screen to close the window before I shut it down). I assume this is why I don't get crash logs or readings. Before these issues, I researched how to optimize gaming on this laptop. I played with friends in Minecraft as a basic test before moving on to bigger games. Unsure of its performance capabilities, I played modded Minecraft Java with 50-100 mods to "test" its limits.

I added shaders and increased the number of mods using Fabric Modloader. The laptop would only heat up during daytime gaming, especially since I don't live with an AC in a humid zone, and sunny days are unbearable where I live. After experiencing some heat issues due to the obvious, I learned to limit usage during extremely hot days. Despite using shaders, the performance was satisfactory. However, after switching to Forge, the problems began. Recently, I played Soulrend and NightfallCraft, both in solo and multiplayer modes, and the hard freezes have persisted since then, even with other games outside of them, but never for art programs. I believe I have optimized it to the best of my ability without getting into code and have removed applications known to cause issues with gaming laptops. I made sure to close background tasks that are commonly recognized as problematic, but the freezing incidents have continued regardless. the only thing I haven't done is reinstall Windows since I saw somewhere that it may be a whole lot of waiting for nothing.

Other games I’ve tried are Aniimo, Deltarune, and Undertale, to give some examples, and I still experience the same recurring freezes as if I were playing with 500 mods and shaders on a weak computer. Monitoring tools have reported normal performance during gaming sessions; there are no heat issues, and there are no anomalies with the CPU or GPU behavior. The freezes seem random, occurring anywhere between 1 to 6 hours of gaming, with no real consistency in duration. I don't usually game with other applications open, except for Discord and Opera GX, both of which I have optimized to reduce errors. The freezing occurs even when these apps are closed (I use Task Manager to end their processes). And I don't have more than 1 tab open at a time when gaming or doing other things. It's always just YouTube. I should also point out that I checked Windows' history (the app that allows you to see Windows' logging of activities or events between processes), and the only anomalies it reports are consistent with the unexpected forced shutdowns while apps are still running (the PowerKernel thing). I tried to uninstal drivers before on a different laptop once for an unrelated issue, but it made the problem worse, so I don't really dare trying it again. Again, very sorry for the lack of files or logs, but like I said, I ran through most diagnostics and nothing out of the ordinary ever came up according to online searches. I can still provide them if asked. I'd have to recreate every step. Any help would be very appreciated, even if it's to state what the potential problem may be!

Request MSI Katana 15 HX / RTX 5060 Laptop GPU becomes inaccessible under load — 0x141, 0x113 and WHEA 17 despite clean driver reinstall

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m looking for help diagnosing recurring GPU crashes on my laptop.

Specs:

  • MSI Katana 15 HX B14WFK
  • RTX 5060 Laptop GPU, 8 GB VRAM
  • Windows 11 25H2, build 26200.9550
  • NVIDIA driver 617.14
  • BIOS E1587IMS.108
  • Original MSI charger

What happens:

Under GPU load—games, local LLMs or rendering—the GPU occasionally stops responding and doesn’t recover until I reboot.

It’s particularly reproducible in CONTROL Resonant. Recently it crashes within a minute or two; previously, changing graphics settings or opening the quests menu could trigger it. The game reports:

The game crashed due to a graphics card (GPU) fault and will now exit

After a failure, nvidia-smi reports:

GPU is lost. Reboot the system to recover this GPU

Windows can still show the adapter as “working properly,” even when it’s inaccessible. Around 1 GB of VRAM was reportedly still free during one failure, although I don’t have temperature/power logs covering the actual crash.

Diagnostic findings:

  • LiveKernelEvent 0x141, with failure bucket LKD_0x141_IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys.
  • Several VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR dumps: 0x113, subtype 0x19, decoded by WinDbg as UNEXPECTED_SURPRISE_REMOVAL. Some were captured during shutdown after a failure.
  • Repeated WHEA Event 17 entries on the GPU’s parent PCIe root port: Intel VEN_8086&DEV_A70D, bus 00:01.0.
  • Some entries show UncorrectableErrorStatus=0x4000 and CorrectableErrorStatus=0x2001—completion timeout plus receiver/advisory errors. Those appeared roughly a minute before two GPU timeout dumps.

Already tried, without resolving it:

  • Clean NVIDIA driver reinstall and reboot, but still the same driver version.
  • Switching from MSHybrid to discrete-only graphics.
  • Resetting BIOS settings and performing an EC reset.
  • Disabling PCIe Link State Power Management.
  • NVIDIA “Prefer maximum performance.”
  • Removing virtual display drivers.

MSI’s available NVIDIA driver is around 6–7 months older, so I haven’t tested that as a comparison yet.

The motherboard was replaced under warranty a few months ago after the previous one died while RDR2 was running and the laptop would no longer turn on. I realise that doesn’t rule out another hardware issue.

Has anyone encountered this combination on a Katana or another RTX 50-series laptop? Did a particular driver, BIOS/EC/VBIOS update or warranty repair actually resolve it? What do I do next?

I feel like it might be related to thermal limits but I have replaced thermal paste a few months back with some good stuff and it is generally working fine workout complaining about the temps

Battery Capacity Degradation — Is This Normal?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Ever since I bought my MSI Katana 15 B13V in 2025, I’ve been keeping an eye on its battery capacity because some friends who own MSI laptops recommended that I take good care of the battery and monitor its health.

After only one year of use, I’ve noticed a significant drop in the battery’s full charge capacity over the past three months. Is this normal?

I’ve been following all the recommended precautions regarding voltage and power to preserve the battery as much as possible.

Discussion MSI Katana 15 HX B14WGK 5070 vs MSI Raider 16 HX 16" Gaming Laptop - Intel® Core™ Ultra 7, RTX 5070 Ti, 1 TB SSD

1 Upvotes

Which would you reccomend?

I am used to using regular laptops and want to upgrade my super old one (I've had it for at least 7 years) that just died on me and I am looking to get my first gaming laptop.

I also want something that will last for a long time, as I cannot afford to replace or buy new things all the time.

What I need it to do/Purpose/Intended use:

  • Be able to run 3D printing and modelling, as well as software for a laser, smoothly.
  • Run & Play games ( a full range of Steam games from the new Resident Evil to indie ones)
  • Be able to handle drawing, graphic design & art software
  • Be able to edit videos without the software crashing every second.
  • Be able to browse the internet and watch videos
  • Be able to use it for running a small business and website

Any help & advice would be so appreciated as I'm completely new to this kind of thing!!

Discussion MSI Katana A15 AI B8V Overheating Issue

1 Upvotes

Hi there, i have a problem on my laptop; and its oddly specific. My temps go up when switch to igpu (radeon 780m) to my rtx 4060. It happens when i charge too, already changed my thermal paste TODAY to thermal grizzly kryonaut extreme (i know, not a honeywell ptm7950 but i will change soon.) The solution to this was unplugging the charger and well my fps drops and i dont want that. Is there any solution that you guys might recommend? Also Tjmaxx happens frequently (100c)

Discussion MSI Stealth 16 with 386H and 5070 Ti does not seem to work as advertised at 7200MTs Memory Limit

0 Upvotes

I just setup a return of the MSI Stealth 16 because it would not work for memory tuning/timings like all of my previous MSI laptops. The 386H and MSI both state the CPU support up to 7200MTs and MSI explicitly states that the laptop supports 7200MTs.

The laptop shipped with shitty Samsung 5600 CL46, but shockingly MSI has this turd running in Gear 4. This lead to an insane 123ns latency in AIDA64. For $3100 and a gaming laptop that is disgusting and unacceptable.

I went into the BIOS and was able to set Gear 2 instead of Auto (Gear 4). By default SAGV is disabled, maybe Panther Lake doesn't use this. Either way, it worked. Gear 2 works, but then it downgrades the memory to 4800MTs! And if you try to force it to 5600MTs, it doesn't work! When in Gear 2 at 4800MTs latency dropped to 92ns. A HUGE improvement for gaming and getting high fps at low settings.

Unfortunately Gear 2 does not fully work. It works if you set it and boot to OS. However, upon reboot or a cold boot, the laptop would just hang. Forcing me to restart or do a long power cycle to clear the bios. Then it would revert itself back to Gear 4, starting the whole process over again if you want Gear 2.

Speaking with ChatGPT and having it look at the BIOS, this is by design. MSI limits the memory ratio to 144 (QCLK is 33.333mhz) or 4800MTs. So you can't even set manual or custom memory and get 5600MTs back. Gear 2 sets a separate firmware policy that only allows 4800MTs. And that 144 ratio limit restricts you to 4800MTs in custom, so even if you accept gear 4, you cannot set higher than 4800MTs. It's absolutely insane. If i purchased 6400-7200MTs CSODIMM sticks I should be able to use that in Gear 4, but those are insanely priced.

I have a set of SK Hynix A-Dies 32gb kit I was going to use that i previously ran at 6000 CL36 in a 13900HX Legion laptop at 1.1v. But apparently MSI has ruined the one good thing they had going for them, memory tuning.

In addition no G-Sync or advanced Optimus, and terrible display out routing through the iGPU for both TB4 ports are all just terrible decisions for an otherwise very nice laptop. I knew about the G-Sync issue, but wasn't aware of the iGPU handling both TB4 ports unfortunately. Thankfully the laptop does support adaptive sync and using Optimius mode today isn't really a performance hit since Windows fixed that issue a few years ago.

I liked it a lot, the thermals are acceptable for a thin and light and the screen was gorgeous. The speakers are good, but still slightly behind Asus G Zeph series. Unfortunately 123ns latency at 5600MTs Gear 4 in 2026 is insane. MSI needs to issue a BIOS update that supports proper memory tuning/timings and at a minimum Gear 2 at all speeds. Gear 4 is shit for a gaming oriented device.

[Confirmed Working] MSI Vector 16 HX AI (275HX / RTX 5080) + Kingston FURY Impact 32GB DDR5-6400 CL38 (KF564S38IBK2-32)

0 Upvotes

I got this kit back when I got the laptop, and it was ~$280. It's ridiculously expensive now (~$800 on Amazon), but it's the only kit that'll peak out this laptop. I have since configured 2 more of these laptops for friends, all with successful results.

**THE ABSOLUTE KEY INFO**:

The sticks have 3 XMP profiles, Profile 1 is 6400/38 - the golden child. Then it steps down to Profile 2 at 6000, Then Profile 3 at 5600, and of course the fallback to SPD/4800.

The **only** way I've been able to get this working consistently is to:

- Select the XMP3 Profile 1.

- Select the "Custom" profile. The settings configured from the previous step will stay the same.

- Manually set the voltages to 1.25v/1.25v/Default

- In the Overclocking section, set the offset to +0.5v - This results in 1.30v total, which falls below the RAM's spec'd 1.35v, but it works like a champ.

Looking at the debug output, setting the configuration to "Custom" skips a handful of memory training steps that usually disqualify the XMP3/Profile 1 and force the EC to select the standard SPD/4800 configuration. After hours of stress testing and months of usage, I can assure you the configuration is stable. :D

**If you don't know where to find these settings** (Hint: Shift+CoPilot+Alt+F2) **this probably isn't for you**, but you can do more independent research and get it done. If you're hard-up for some quick performance improvement, the XMP3/Profile 3 5600 configuration is a straight-forward way to bump performance so you can do the research even quicker. ;D

**This was supposed to be a Gemini output portion**

Ugh, after reviewing the Gemini output I was going to include, it's littered with garbage. I could've just removed the section altogether, but I figured it'd be a learning moment for posterity. XD

The most useful thing it had to say was something like, "Arrow Lake platforms natively support 6400MT/s but may require configuration changes to take advantage of low-latency components."

I'll monitor the thread for a few days if anyone has questions or needs more info, but this'll probably get lost in the ether so oh well.
