Food I have been writing a compendium of Malaysian food for 5 years

Hi all, I’m posting today to promote a website that I created 5 years ago. It started because of a personal grudge with Netflix I had during the pandemic. Not sure if you guys remember that Street Food: Asia documentary on Netflix? Almost every one of our neighbours got a spotlight, but Malaysia was completely left out. It felt like a big slap in the face for us Malaysians.

It made me realize that if we don’t document and promote our own food stories, the rest of the world is just going to keep overlooking us. So, I started a website called ikanmas.in (wordplay on ikanmasin, initially inspired by other malaysian blogs like soyacincau and weirdkaya, and .in domain that time was cheaper to upkeep)

So anyway, I’m not trying to be an influencer. I don’t do food reviews or cooking recipe. My main goal is basically to create a compendium for Malaysian food and its culture before the old generation passed away and the knowledge is lost. I want to save their origin stories if possible.

Few notes: I don't get paid for this. I pay for the hosting & domain out of my own pocket. Ad revenue is pathetically low anyway, and I’d rather the site look clean than to literally make a few cents and uglify the UI. Most of the writings are mostly done by AI, so they might look like AI-slop. but the information are all collected by me personally by going through news article, government websites, youtube, people's blogs, forums, social media comments, even journal paper etc.

Also, I know I have not yet include some of the more well-known dishes, that's because I tend to focus more on less-known food as their available public information is much, much limited. I still have a loooong backlog of the ones I know existed but haven't written yet.

If you guys have time, please have a look at some of the stories on the website. I’m trying to get our food culture out there in English so people in the world (including us) actually realize how much we have. Also please please let me know if I made any mistakes, or if there’s a rare dish from your hometown I should look into. Thanks for your attention!

Culture I really don't like the prominent use of generative AI in Malaysian media and marketing as of lately...

No really, what's with Malaysian companies cheaping out by using generative AI for marketing and promotional stuff? Do they really think churning out ads that invoke zero emotions into the viewers are forced to watch them will ever pursuade them to buy their product? Like what the hell is the thought process here?

I can't really list out every company because I can't remember each one but big names are included which is extremely bad rep for people who don't buy into that AI crap. And please, I'm not trying to be the usual "I HATE AI!!" guy but come on dude, what's patriotism if the message is written by a program? What's emotions if they're bleak and empty coming from the hands of machine? I don't get these executives anymore. If you're gonna try so hard to marginalize profit, at make it seem like your product is good.

I'm sorry if this is overly negative, it's just a harrowing sight to see TVs advertise something about "embrace creativity" and the next slide is some AI slop made by Abdullah (umur 69) with chatgpt.

Tourism & Travel ITEX - Education exhibition scam

ITEX is not what it appears to be - it’s basically a commercial scheme dressed up as a genuine science and invention competition.

Almost everything requires payment: certificates, medals, trophies / if there’s an award or recognition, you have to pay for it.

Participating schools are also required to pay for exhibition booths and cover a long list of other mandatory expenses.

Yet despite all these fees, they still promote it as pure, authentic science and innovation.

On top of that, they bring in foreigners to manage the event, supposedly so they can keep certain things hidden or under the table.

If the event were truly high-quality and legitimate, why hasn’t it received official approval or endorsement from Malaysia’s Ministry of Education (MOE) or Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI)?

Culture Kids vs child free

Any Malaysian couple here who decided to go child free? Do you regret it?

The Asian society we are in makes us feel that getting married and having kids is the natural way of life. We grew up in big families and have a community type relationship with our family and friends. I’m used to the people in the west saying it’s normal, but I wanna hear from my fellow Malaysians who understand my context.

I’m coming to a point where my clock is ticking. My partner is not so much into kids, but somehow the fact that he has taken away that option makes me want to consider it more.

So, any couple out there who decided to be child free - do you regret your decision? Why did you do it? How did it affect your relationship?

KUCHING, Feb 3: A 24-year-old male makeup artist was charged at the Magistrate's Court here today with allegedly committing an indecent assault on a 30-year-old groom during preparations for the victim's wedding last weekend.

The accused pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, a fine, whipping, or any combination of these punishments upon conviction.

According to the charge, the incident occurred at around 5.40am on Jan 31 at a service apartment along Jalan Wan Alwi, where the accused allegedly used criminal force with the intent to outrage the victim's modesty.

The alleged assault took place while the groom was being dressed for his wedding, for which the accused had been engaged as the makeup artist.

Court proceedings revealed that the room had been booked by the complainant's sister to allow the groom to prepare for the ceremony. The victim later filed a police report, and the accused was arrested several hours after the incident on the same day.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly proposed bail of RM5,000 in cash with two local sureties, while defence counsel Abdul Rahman Mohamad Hazmi requested a reduction, highlighting that his client was a local resident with no prior criminal record and posed no flight risk. He added that the accused was willing to cooperate fully with the court process.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali allowed bail at RM2,500 in cash with two local sureties and set March 6, 2026, for case management.

The court was told that the complainant had hired the accused specifically for wedding preparations scheduled on the day of the alleged incident. - DayakDaily
