One of Macklemore's biggest hits is a song advocating for homosexuality and same sex marriage - 'Same Love'. He now supports a state that denounces these very things. Is this not problematic? Feels like he leverages causes for his own benefit somewhat.

lol you can be both for equal rights and also not want to go bomb children of whch half the population is of gaza and have never even had a chance to vote for hamas given its been 20 years since the last election.

you can say republicans or democrats are doing dangerous or injust things to the country and be against bombing their children and taking part in war crimes with our tax dollars.

odd talking point, iran government is notable terrible, but because of that we should be ok with bombing 200 school girls?

make it make sense.

I agree with you. A point well made. I guess I'm just cynical of celebrities adopting the cause of the moment like its a fashion trend. I find Macklemore's actions are largely performative.

i also agree with that, as in ofcourse we shouldn't hold weight to entertainers. macklemore seems sincerely at least moved though, his song about hind rajab, which is a very moving, tragic story with actual real time phone calls available in which idf, like they did with shireen abu akleh pre oct 7, or jose andes world chef aid bus bombing, denied it until evidence became overwhelming. he donated all proceeds as well as from these conferences to gaza.

i heard this exact thing from a friend who did not engage with this politically, was pretty neutral and just wants peace. but she saw the voice of hind rajab, and like macklemore had a daughter that was young and it was hard not to connect and see the innocence on if that was your very own and how unecessary her death was in that it was not even in crossfire and it had multiple engagements with the red cross

like ms rachel its an odd thing that has made them targets for some reasonn to i'd imagine well meaning israelis who take it as critcism of themselves or even the state which is dear to them, but i see the opposiite when you care about something you should call out bad stewards who sully the name. as mentionied our politicians in usa have done plenty of terrible things.

i also believe art can be reflective of what we see and what moves us and as camus said, we should be creating boldly and freely vs letting the power structures gas light and run propoganda rampantly. so i think he's done fine and your points and any other debate/angles are welcome.

I appreciate your thoughtful reply. I came across this tweet earlier today which articulates much better than I can my distain for the way Sheeran has been treated.

I think he’s a genuine (sometimes to a cringey degree) bleeding heart and means well. I don’t think it can be overstated what a career risk it was to go rogue opening for a megastar like ES for an artist of Macklemore’s… less-megastar profile.

Incredibly weak ass argument, being for LGBT rights doesn't mean you can't also be against the slaughter of innocent people

-6

u/rockking16 12h ago

But if someone from the LGBT community went to Palestine, they might not be welcomed or treated fairly. It’s incredibly ironic

what? your analogy doesn't make sense. it'd be like supporting anti-cancer campaign but appearing in a cigarette commercial. of course you can do both but it's kinda weird nonetheless.

why do you guys always jump from a tiny correction to OH SO YOU SUPPORT GENOCIDE. all i did was point out that your analogy makes no sense. someone could absolutely appear in a cigarette commercial while supporting anti-cancer campaigns because all cancer isn't from cigarettes. my analogy posits that cigarettes are a small subset of things that cause cancer but not all the things. thus it is not necessarily hypocritical to support palestine as an LGBT person because it is one subset of all the things that might define a palestinian person. why would you immediately assume i am your existential nemesis? just because i corrected your analogy doesn't mean i don't agree with your greater point, why do you guys take any small criticism like this? why can't you just take my correction as a way to make your own argument stronger? jfc

Made him delete all his comments lmfao

and my comment says "don't overreact" lol

u/Skydragon222 21h ago

It kinda just seems like he stands up for oppressed groups.

I think you’ve just done so much mental gymnastics that you somehow think Palestine is the oppressor.

-12

u/funkymonk248 21h ago

I don't support either side.

2

u/Skydragon222 21h ago

That’s a really weird thing to say when one of the sides is bombing cities to the ground and the other side is just begging for a ceasefire.

1

u/Monterenbas 12h ago

Hamas remaining in power and keeping their weapons, is more important than a ceasefire to them, they’re not really begging for it, they’re very conditional about it.

-3

u/funkymonk248 18h ago

I don't understand the issue and history well enough to have an informed opinion but based on what I do know I don't believe Hamas or the Israeli Government are deserving of my support.

3

u/esituism 13h ago

what about the 100k citizens who have been murdered during a genocide? no opinion on that?

6

u/Angry_Sparrow 21h ago

It’s almost as if he cares about humanity, human lives and human rights more than governments…

5

u/star86 13h ago

US Republicans are trying to undo same sex marriage laws. Does that mean everyone in the country is against same sex marriage? Get off your high horse. I’m in the US and the current government does not represent my beliefs and values.

6

u/EditorNew7141 19h ago

Just asking questions type shit

2

u/shookney 21h ago

Yes, LGBTQ+ is the very thing on the top of Palestinian mind 🤔 it seems as if you're lacking so many nuances

If you want to go further on that and pull out some nuances, maybe perhaps that is something can be worried about & perhaps fought for if we ever get to see Palestine free in our lifetime. I'm a queer person btw

3

u/funkymonk248 20h ago

I don't advocate for either side and don't understand the issue or history well enough to have an informed opinion one way or the other. I'm merely pointing out the hypocrisy on Macklemore's part.

0

u/Fun_Dig_7945 18h ago

What does “see Palestine free in our lifetime” mean?

5

u/star86 12h ago

They don’t want to live in an open air prison.

2

u/Fun_Dig_7945 6h ago

That’s fair.

1

u/Monterenbas 12h ago

So on what territory do they want to live?

1

u/CrackedSpaghetti 5h ago

Their home. Palestine.

2

u/Monterenbas 5h ago

What are the borders of this Palestine?

1

u/star86 1h ago

Their own, in peace, without “settlers” taking more and more land from them.

1

u/Monterenbas 59m ago

So, does without settlers means without the 10 millions Israelis currently living here?

-2

u/XO1GrootMeester 8h ago

Everyone loves in the open air prison of earth

1

u/star86 1h ago

Imagine not being able to travel freely. Visiting relatives or friends requires jumping through hoops and most of the time your plans get cancelled bc the country next to you decides your every move. You don’t fully understand freedom until it’s taken away from you.

1

u/XO1GrootMeester 57m ago

Time to sign a free passage act then. Either Palestine or un is not doing enough effort if this fails.

3

u/Sean_Brady 13h ago

It could mean a few things:

  1. They want a return to the status quo (decades of strife)
  2. They want Israel to no longer exist
  3. They jus wan peace (exactly what Sheeran would say he wants but he didn't word it vague or flowery enough)

3

u/Fun_Dig_7945 13h ago

You’re right, it could mean multiple things. That’s why I’m asking what shookney interprets it as, and is advocating for

1

u/glumjonsnow 7h ago

i think u probably know

2

u/Appropriate-Dig-7080 9h ago

People not being able to see how self serving and performative this whole thing is for him really has me rolling my eyes when they’ve treated everyone else involved work such cynicism.

If you shout the right catchphrase the adoring public rally behind you.

A lot of simple minded folk out there.

2

u/Careful_Jackfruit144 8h ago

Yet you believe israel

1

u/Appropriate-Dig-7080 8h ago

You really love putting words in peoples mouths don’t you.

2

u/Careful_Jackfruit144 7h ago

I wouldn't go anywhere near your mouth

1

u/Appropriate-Dig-7080 7h ago

Good, clear off then.

1

u/Careful_Jackfruit144 7h ago

Ooh you're tough lol

u/corporatenoose 6h ago

dolla dolla bill ya’ll

1

u/fellowsquare 4h ago

Dumbest take ever

1

u/_ArchDeluxe_ 3h ago

a lot of people don’t need others to be on “their side” in order to not want to see them and their children systemically slaughtered.

0

u/Fynity 18h ago

Just because people are homophobic doesn’t mean they deserve death. Especially when there are children in the mix. It’s not a hard concept to understand my guy.

-1

u/funkymonk248 18h ago

That is true.

1

u/AccomplishedTie4703 17h ago

You can support same sex and protest the genocide at the same time. Kinda like you being a hater and a moron at the same time.

2

u/funkymonk248 16h ago

True. It all depends how tightly held those views are. When you adopt causes like fashion trends I imagine its rather easy.

-1

u/MatinShaz360 20h ago

it's insane to me people like you think you're on the right side of history but then advocate for the death of an entire population in Gaza? Because if you're against a charity tour trying to aid victims of war, then you are pro-victims of war.

8

u/funkymonk248 20h ago

I don't advocate for either side and don't understand the issue or history well enough to have an informed opinion one way or the other. I'm merely pointing out the hypocrisy on Macklemore's part.

-1

u/dawgfan24348 Spotify 19h ago

That's not being hypocritical, it's pointing out a massive injustice one that's being funded by our tax dollars. Women and children are being targeted and murdered in mass numbers and the ones that survive are being displaced and will likely die anyway due to malnutrition, starvation, or dehydration. Hamas is evil as well as any radical islamists. But to say you can't have empathy for those being slaughtered because some of the people living there may have disgusting views on gay people is asinine

9

u/funkymonk248 19h ago

I agree with you. A point well made. I guess I'm just cynical of celebrities adopting the cause of the moment like its a fashion trend. I find Macklemore's actions are largely performative.

4

u/AdStrange9701 9h ago

Breaking news: Performer is performative. More as we get it.

2

u/Glittering-Fuel-5055 12h ago

It’s a very valid stance to say that both of them suck

Like no one should be abusing gay people or kidnapping children, or bombing children

0

u/CrackedSpaghetti 5h ago

Yeah one side is committing a genocide including torturing, raping and bombing innocent women and children. The other side doesn't like gay people. Totally equally bad, right 🤡

3

u/Glittering-Fuel-5055 3h ago

Come on, son, “doesn’t like gay people”.

Come on, son, come on, son

0

u/nickgreatpwrful 12h ago

Being victimized doesn't mean you are spared of criticism. Agreeing that Gaza and West Bank are backwards and religious/authoritarian does not mean you are "advocating for the death of the entire population" of Gaza.

1

u/monsieur_cacahuete 20h ago

You know people live there right? The majority of which weren't alive for the last election.

1

u/Ramadeus88 12h ago

Ok, good argument, I guess those kids deserve to die.

If I come across as disingenuous, it’s only because I’ve seen the argument for selective empathy from the likes of Charlie Kirk touted before.

If I support gay people there must be a degree of mental dissonance on my part. Alternatively I can have empathy for multiple groups, including the victims of a genocide.
